Am looking to buy a new bike to tie in to a forthcoming house move which will mean a longer cycle ride commute.

The commute will be a mix of road, cycle way and canal path and contains a bastard of a hill at the end.

Looking to spend 600 ish.

Do I need a hybrid, road bike,  adventure bike?

Any recommendations in terms of makes and models?

And any tips as to reliable online shops since the high street shops dont tend to stock much.

A hybrid would be my choice.

An electric bike might help with the hill.

I looked at electric bikes, you have to spend 1800+ I think to get a decent one. At that cost I would go with 4ds original suggestion!

Just see one you fancy and nick it. Seems every other fucker is.

Are you going to do anything else on it?

Not really, maybe the odd weekend jaunt with the family, but the commute is prob about 6 miles each way, so will get a lot of use during the week.

I would probably go for hybrid then, as the position is likely to be more relaxed/comfortable than a road/gravel/adventure bike.

Go for the widest tyres the frame and forks will take.

Hybrid sounds like the most logical choice.

I've been looking at hybrids myself through the 'cycle to work' scheme.

I have no idea on what bikes are good and the components that go on them. So far, my search has gone as far as Evans Cycles..

Must confess I have never bought a hybrid so not sure where to start, now is probably a good time as potentially they will be flogging off 2019 models to make room for new stock. In terms of groupset, Sram or Shimano are pretty bomb proof, not sure if it is any more but best entry on Shimano was Deore?

I would be quite loathe to buy on-line without sitting on the thing, I bought my first road bike from Evans (they were the only people who had the biggest frame in the country which I needed) but remember now its part of the Ashley empire so you will be funding Newcastle not buying a striker!

If you google men's hybrid cyles then click on images you will a decent amount of cycles with the suppliers and prices next to them and many within your price price range etc
