Title: Best/Worst STFC Chants
Post by: Richie Wellen-Dowd on Thursday, January 2, 2020, 12:29:00
I'm not too up on all the songs these days. I do like the Doyle ones however, while I don't like the Isgrove ditty. It doesn't sound like a football chant to me, maybe it's the lack of energy.

Out of all the songs I've heard us sing, I think the 'left side over here' has to be the most pointless piece of shit I've heard.
Not sure on a favourite. The puerile side of me loves that we chant 'fuck off', where everyone else chants their clubs name. That can't be my favourite though, so I'm hoping someone will trigger my memory.

Any suggestions?

To be honest we just sing the same songs as everyone else most of the time and I dislike most of them. Can't beat the classic COYR's though, and the Ginger Pele one is good but also not original at all.

Only unique song I think we have is the 1969 one.

Some of the old Brighton and Gillingham songs were amusing, probably not acceptable this PC day and age.  :)

This.

Although back in the mid 80s we had "the dinkle song" which was totally unique and brilliant.

Otherwise its all a rehash of other teams songs.

Likewise,   don't like the Isgrove  song,  some of the better ones have to be 'Celery', 'in 1969' and definitely current number one has to be 'Ginger Pele'.

Same tunes maybe, but there must be quite a few where the words have changed to make them significantly different? Surely no one else ever sang about turning their opponent's ground in to a public lavatory? Or am I completely wrong?

No, you are correct,  their ground is definitely a lavatory.

Celery was fun but "borrowed" from Chelsea fans prior to us singing it.

Does a running commentary on games, yet doesn't give us the lyrics to "the dinkle song"!  ;)

My memory fades me a little with age but some of the bits I remember....

Swindon boys gonna sing you a song
We all got dinkles 1 foot long
We're the boys who love a fight
Especially in Oxford on a Saturday night

Adi Elsworth laying in the bath
Playing with his dinkle having a larf
Gave a cry and shot his load
He almost burst the overflow

There was Ollie laying in his bed
Playing with his dinkle the ends all red
We all see the size of Ollies dong
It was 2 feet wide and 6 feet long

Stabber lets his dinkle dangle
Got it caught in a kitchen mangle
its almost the same as Ollies dong
Except its six feet wide and 2 foot long

Oxford girls keep their legs shut tight
But they open to the boys in the red and white
We know their used to a smaller size
So the Oxford girls get a big surprise

there were at least another 3 verses but I cannot remember them now, summut about trouble in the townend etc and policemen....
Bear in mind this was 1984/5 so my memory fails me a bit, first sung at the Swindon v Scunthorpe 0-0 game in thick fog in 1984 and then sung through the promotion winning season the year after.

Usually used just to wind people up,     I.e. fans singing to us .......  Small Town in Oxford etc.   Now that would wind us up.

It was one of the songs where one person sings the line then the Town End repeated it afterwards.

Around the time that we used to sing about "From the services at Leicester to the cells of Warrington, from the station at Colchester to the slums of Northampton, we'll follow over England and one day Europe too, cos we all follow the Swindon we are the famous South Side crew."

Remember this one from '69 era.
For the great Stan Harland to the tune Mammie

Stanley, Stanley
Walk a million miles for one of your Smiles
Oh Stanley

Who could we use this one for now?  Maybe Jerry Yates as his is not the best

Also think the ditty that is sung for Steven Benda - We have a 'Big Fucking German' is maybe not the most complementary!!

Maybe Shirley Basseys 'Heh big Spenda'

TBF there was never more than about 200 of us sinfing it in the Town End as attendances back then were about 2,500 to 3,000 at most.

Do you remember Adi Ellsworth, Ollie and Stabber? they were the chief architects of the song.

I think they got banning orders from all grounds back in the mid/late 80s but still go to games now.

Remember Ollie, possibly Adi, but don't recall Stabber, isn't strange,  was only thinking a short while ago I'd not seen Ollie for a while. There must be many regulars from those days who are now stored at the back of the brain,  just needs someone to give you a nudge and usually it all comes back.

I remember at Colchester away just before PDC left (that game!), STFC fans spontaneously burst into a tune of "your mum's got saggy tits" to the tune of la belle e mobile which PDC's name was frequently sung to.

I still like the musical and narrative twists of "I heard that Robert Maxwell went to Rome to see the Pope" so much that I've taught it to my kids, who only enjoy singing it because of the sweary bits.

Disappointingly a Man Utd chant way before we got our hands on it. Although you levelled up as a dad for teaching the kids that version!

I made up a chant once..... it was in response to the sale of Dennis (Bullets) Brown in 67.

Herman's Hermits, No Milk Today, the theme....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AopIr7T-Zq4

No goals today... Dennis Brown has gone away.  Danny stands forlorn a symbol that he's gorn.

I tried it out on the the Rimes to Shrewsbury.   It didn't catch on  :)

Welcome Batchman.

TBF there haven't been that many songs that a. Swindon fans wrote without just copying other teams songs, or b. That have caught on with other Town fans for singing together.

This season is the first season in a few years that we have actually had songs (albeit not original) that have been sung for individual players, the songs for Doyle and Isgrove spring to mind.

Its great to hear our fans singing songs about players rather than just the team, and sung very well by a large amount of the fans too.

I do remember back in 84 the Town End sang a song to the tune of the (then popluar) "Frog Chorus - we all stand together" by Paul McCartney.

Win or lose, sink or swim we are the Swindon and we never win, side by side hand in hand we all stand together....

Out of all the songs I've heard us sing, I think the 'left side over here' has to be the most pointless piece of shit I've heard.

When this was in its early days (I think), my mate and I were stood at the back of the terracing at Peterborough and tried to get people to join in with 'We're the backside...' but it never really took off.

I still get shivers down my spine recalling the Town End roaring ‘Hark now hear the Swindon sing, the Arsenal ran away, and we will fight for ever more, because of last Tuesday” during those heady months of (particularly cup) heroism before it all fell apart in the ‘79/‘80 season. I was a young lad sat in the wooden old stand and loved the terrace version of what I knew as the, oft aired on radio, Boney M single. I like rapidly thought up cover versions of pop songs on the terraces and was impressed in the early 90’s when a chum sang Colin Calderwood’s name to the tune of The Shamen’s drug anthem‘ ‘Ebeneezer  Goode’. I don’t recall it really catching on though...the terrace chant that is... ecstasy became quite a hit. Very moreish.
Also have a memory of a bloke called Dale in the Macari era, consistently corrupting the climactic words of the “Oh, Swindon Town is wonderful” chant to “...it’s full of tits and a fanny called Macari!”

Remembér being pissed after that QPR last game of the PL season and back to the Pride of Paddington.

There were a few of us ‘singing’

‘If you can’t stay up, then we’re going down’. No particular tune but lots of hand action and hip swivelling as if attempting the limbo. Getting snapped by foreign tourists, mainly Japanese IIRC. ‘Ah! Soccel Hoorigans’

As a kid I didn't know the story behind the Martin Aldridge chant and thought it was just a stupid song. When I found out it was based on a tragedy, it made me reeeal uncomfortable.

If we could repurpose the tune it's sung to though, that'd be good

County road
Take me home
To the place
I belong
Watching Swindon
Winning Again
Take me home

They do as do Wigan and several others, still a good shout for a new song though.

What road do Wigan sing about, considering their ground is on a retail park?

Quite a few redheads though. Rainford isn't bad but that's more the 'posh' end of St. Helen's. Just don't go to Skem. Lovely. Is it still fenced off?
