Title: Port Vale v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Saturday, December 28, 2019, 00:47:32
I've lost track of days, but we play them tomorrow!
They have lost 1 of their 11 home games this season, but that was only a couple of weeks ago to Walsall.

Let's hope form sees us through.
I'll go for 1-3. Att: 4,863 (867 away) two for Doyle and a goal from Doughty.

Either way, we're both right.

Tough game, this one. Vale much improved this season.

Habit of losing leads on a regular basis, too. One of those games I’d be happy not to lose.

I nearly set off for this game today (doh). Now I can't make it tomorrow due to family commitments so will have to go to the Plymouth game instead [btw the Plymouth game is all ticket and tickets are taken off sale at 1pm on Monday]

2-1 to Town tomorrow

I thought it was a Saturday game also, for obvious reasons (football should be played on a Sat)

This is the start of the spell of difficult games which wil define our season.... Vale's pitch apparently isn't great, I suppose appropriate for the Wembley of the North.

Going to miss this one out, family gathering again. However, Plymouth is a target. I expect to win both. 1-3 v PV & 0-1 v Pilgrims.

My first away league game was at Port Vale.  We drew 2-2 after being 2 up.  I'd settle for the same tomorrow.

2-2   Yates & Woolery.  Att 5,432

Pissed off I am unable to watch because we arranged a family get together months ago and silly me said yes Sunday is not a problem as the game will be played on the Saturday, as normal.

I was wrong and yes I know I should have checked.

PV are in 10th place but their recent form is LLDDD.

At home they have lost to the very poor Walsall only a couple of weeks ago, that was their only home defeat in the league all season with them winning 5 and drawing the other 5 games there. They also have one of the best defensive records in the league at home with just 9 goals conceded there.

Their top scorer is the ageing Tom Pope with 6 goals although only 3 of those came in the league. He is very slow and imobile but is decent in the air and is always a handful. He has scored against the Town 3 times in his 14 matches against us but with 145 goals to his name is going need to be marked closely.

Swindon have won their last 2 games up in Burslem, and we have recorded 5 wins there in the last 7 meetings at Vale Park and only 4 defeats there in the last 14 meetings since 2001.

Apparently it's the full opening of the facilities at Home Park on new year's day, up to 18k capacity. Home tickets all ticket too?

It should be noted that Walsall haven't lost since we beat them 2nd Nov, they like Scunny have picked up after poor spells.

Just away I believe. 1850 tickets should be enough for us, however that stand could easily accommodate 3000 away fans. I guess they want to keep us ruffians away from the family area in the corner of that stand.

True, against us though they were pretty poor especially in attack, but then again so have been pretty much every side barring a handful of teams.

A few views from Vale fans on tomorrows clash, seems like Grant upset them when he left!

Quote
Swindon might be at the top at the moment but that should not worry our players how we can perform

If Crewe can beat them i'm sure the Vale can.

Toughest league game of the season at Vale Park. They have won 14 to our 7, lost 5 to our 6, can we beat the odds? Unbeaten in the league since their loss to Crewe in October, 2 late goals decided it !!.  How about it Vale? It would be a big confidence boost.

Another top team, another open game.
Suits Vale down to the ground.
Our best performances have come in precisely this type of contest.
Obviously also a tough one, but should be an absorbing encounter.

Swindon are the best team in the league so I’d expect the Vale will be up for this with it being the last home game of the year .
Will be going this game as I’m expecting Swindon will bring a fair few with doing so well .
Lets hope we do not respect them too much and get the crowd going by winning 50 /50s early and being brave

Our toughest game this season so far IMO. I’d be very pleased with a point, but like some people are saying we always turn up against the in-form sides in the league. We need to keep Doyle quiet because he is obviously their danger man

It will be interesting to see what sort of welcome Anthony Grant gets tomorrow.

He'll get stick, booed whenever he touches the ball.
This will result in him running the entire game; the bloke loves the attention. The Franchise game on the telly the season he left springs to mind, where he won MOTM. The home game against Crewe, after some criticism of him by them in the week, where he scored a worldie.
The best thing the Vale fans could do is ignore him, but they'll get some sort of weird kick out of booing him and he'll relish it, and pick us apart. Guaranteed. He'll be MOTM tomorrow.

I would rest Pope for this one and play the much more mobile Archer, who might be able to pressure the deep lying Grant into mistakes.
Massive round of applause for Grant from me, the match when he ran on the pitch at the end to remonstrate with the ref was particularly memorable.

Never ever understood the hate for him on here. Called lazy, bone idle, heart not in it etc.  Complete hogwash.
Grant is one of the best midfield players of the last few years . Could run a game on his own, and his own subtle way of winning free kicks to waste time ( as I'm sure we'll see tomorrow ) would of seen the clock run down at Mansfield.
Be no boos from me , the sale of him and Alnwick by the greedy one cost us our League one status.

Around 1000 sold apparently when I enquired before the Cambridge game,  probably a few still available, on sale until 1' o'clock Monday, home tickets already sold out,   don't know what they plan to do with any we may return,   can't see them selling them to home fans.

Yeah club just tweeted over 900 sold.
Fully expect around 1100 in the end.
Long boring old trek for NY day that and £25 tickets not cheapest.

Supporters have until kick off for our game on 26th December v Cambridge to purchase tickets for this fixture. Tickets will also be available on the day to Swindon supporters with a £2 increase.

Can Doyle play NYD at Plymouth?

They seem pretty upbeat on their forum (onevalefan.co.uk). I assume they must be playing well in spite of the indifferent recent results. Grant seems to be a bit of a Marmite character for them, drawing both positive and negative comments. The following sums it up really...

We've seen plenty to back up the comments from the first paragraph, absolutely nothing from the second...and I totally agree with the third and hope the poster is right...

"It is fact that in terms of raw talent Anthony Grant is as good as we've had in the past decade. Would dictate games to his whim in the league above. Good engine, good vision, good technical ability. One of the few players we've had who should have played in the Championship.

Petulant, at times lazy, disrespectful; say what you want about his character. He clearly gave up mid-Bruno experiment (apart from the televised Dons game) and then left as soon as he could.

However, he has no business being in League 2 and will most likely be the best player on the park tomorrow.

2-1 to us...Doyle, Anderson

Looking at at the basic stats.

Vale. DDDLL
GF. 28 GA. 29
L. POS. 10

Town. WDWWW
GF. 43 GA. 24
L. POS. 1

Odds. H 13/5 D 13/5 A 22/19

Of course nothing is guaranteed, however, stats don’t lie.

Other notable fixtures today worth keeping an eye on.

Argyle v St. Evenage*
Military Clink v Grecians
Vegans v Rain Deflectors
Railway Junction v Blast furnace Operators
Curry Mecca v DUM v NUM (one for P A U L)

*Although bottom of the league St. Evenage do top the table with 11 draws, worth also noting all the way up to Scunny in 12th only three teams have lost less than then them. Argyle should win but we’re talking about football here.

Thought i’d have some fun with the fixtures as i’m bored.

As I mentioned before a win today 1-3 keep up the MOMENTUM 😁

Pre match sat in the car waiting for Burslem to open.
Even Burslem Butties is closed, supposed to be 24hr opening.
Pavement cafe culture yet to catch on here.
Are people becoming more conservative. Oh.

Doyle on the verge of club history today.
The 3 points or not losing are more important though.
Hopefully our defence can remind the locals as to what a red wall looks like.
Anyway, Burslem, let us entertain you.
Will DJ rock if he comes on.

If FH does requests then a bit of half time Motorhead would go down very well.

Still pissed off I can watch today but we are in a pub in Paignton from 3pm so if they have a decent wifi connection I will have the game on mobile hidden from the family under the table and keep tabs on iFollow.

Will be doing the same for the 'muff game on NYD too.

The Vale fans on their forum seem very very confident and I never realised how much Grant had pissed them off in the past! I hope he has his best game for Swindon, which would be some doing!

Generally a happy hunting ground in recent times.
There have been some memorable visits.
Feb 1998, a Lee Collins goal, Fraser knocked out, Steve Finney in goal and making a great save. Oh and Steve McMahon sent to the stands.

Also remember possibly our weakest starting 11 of the decade in a midweek game not so long ago.

We’ve created a bit more but it’s very poor and subs have disrupted us. For the goal I’d blame Hunt, he had 5 minutes to get ready whist Iandolo was down and still didn’t get on in time, and was miles off the pace when he did eventually come on.

Good game that, so far.  They look dangerous from that long ball and mopping up the seconds or being laid off.  We look very good on the ball, that Anderson chance was proper sexy.  Grant is looking very solid having gone into defence.  If we could grab an early goal in the second you think we could go on and win, more likely it will be a job of wearing them down and trying to grab a draw I think.  Even if we lose there would be positives to take.

Title: Re: Port Vale v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Red Frog on Sunday, December 29, 2019, 15:53:22
We've steadied the ship and actually looked quite controlled in defence after losing half of our back four within the first 20 minutes. What's odd is that our passing around their area has generally been poor, and Doyle unfortunately looks well off the pace so far. But credit to Vale, who have been quick to get back and pack their area then break out quite quickly, though they're leaving Pope a bit isolated while they protect their lead.

It's actually quite a good game, our mistakes in their final third notwithstanding. A lot still to come, but we really don't want to have only one sub left with another game in three days' time.

Post by: BambooToTheFuture on Sunday, December 29, 2019, 16:56:16
Fryers should be back and possibly Donahue as window will be open (whatever the situation).

Colchester and Exeter drawing is better than either winning as they both drop 2pts. Same with Northampton v Numb too. So while we've had a bad day, damage limitation comes into play.

Still 6pts clear of 4th and 10pts clear of 8th. If this is a 'bad' day then think of the difference another good day would bring.

We'll be right. Today we never really got going. Possibly a poor decision to start Ian. Yet you can only go on previous performance and in training. Let's see if Wellens holds his hands up. He usually does and also we do tend to bounceback pretty well under him. Aka, nominal rot.

For a bad performance, that wasn't that bad, if that makes sense.  Essentially played the last 10 minutes with 10 men, players out of position, injuries, but we were in the game for the most part.

Their second goal, didn't we concede one similar to that at the CG earlier this season?  Colchester maybe.  Players switched off and created an overlap inside for them.

The injuries are a worry, hopefully Fryers returns and we move Zakuani across one, Hunt carries on at left back.  I'd be tempted to go with Grant and Lyden to start next game, give Anderson the day off if he's carrying something and push Doughty forward with Isgrove coming in.

See, even though we lost today, and we have been ravaged by injuries, the fill in players can still create a good starting XI.  A challenge, no doubt, but so much better than recent seasons where the wheels would fall off here.  This  loss doesn't feel like some in recent years, we weren't brushed aside, we stayed in a game despite the adversity and had Anderson scored before half time it could have been very different.

Disjointed performance after the 2 injuries.

Still top so not all bad, great result between Exeter and colchester,
the rest not so.

Be a shuffle around for NYD that's for sure.

6 points clear from 4th.
9 points clear from 8th.

We’re currently on a run of 13 consecutive matches where we have scored and we’ve scored in every away game.
When I posted this I just knew it would come back to bite me in the arse.

Despite appearances, Vale weren't dirty. We just couldn't unlock them, and constantly tried to play through their ranks rather than unlocking them with good passing. It looked like understandably tired football, with Yates and Doyle getting very little space or service. Woolery saw loads of ball on the edge of their area, but never once did anything with it.  We've got to start doing something different with our corners and free-kicks. Positives? Grant and Zakuani were solid, and Isgrove looked lively.

So now we're likely to be down Iandolo, Baudry, Anderson for Plymouth. I hope Fryers is back. Is Broadbent close to fitness?

We always lose when I bet W/L/D with Town. Especially on a favourable outcome for Town  :crash:

Ban me from betting on match outcomes with Town!
Learnt my lesson years ago,   never back the Town !!.   (Do have a bet pre-season but not on individual games).
Maybe it would be a good idea if you backed Plymouth to beat us.

Vale were clever, they let Zakuani have space and pressed everyone else.  They had an outlet in Pope they could use when under pressure and needing to clear.  They had two men on Doyle as a result.  They blocked the passes into him, which meant we didn't have that option for most of the game.  They also had two decent wingers that kept our full backs honest.  All in all, they set-up perfectly to play us and then got the rub of the green with our injuries disrupting us.  Even after all that we had 67% possession, 14 shots vs 9 and 6 corners vs 1.  That's why I can come away from this one with positives.  Very few teams have a Pope, very few games you get three players injured, very few games does the keeper get the Anderson shot.  On another day, it goes in your favour.

Wellens: Ellis is a serious ankle injury. We'll know more after a scan. Zeki won't be fit for Plymouth. Baudry 2-3 weeks. Broadbent's pulled his calf. We're going to have to move pretty quick for a centre-half after New Year. Keshi thinks he's pulled his quad.

Vale are 10th in the table. We STILL haven’t beaten a top ten team. Well, we’ve got a chance to prove ourselves now as, of the next 7 games, 6 are against top ten teams, plus Newport, who we’ve lost to. Are we confident?

It's the risk we took with some of the players we signed, so far it has paid off as we sit top of the league.  We might need to suck up a couple of tough games, get people back fit and get back to where we were, we may even get lucky and have enough quality to ride out the injuries.  Either way, over 22 games, the squad we have (if held together) will be in the hunt for those top three spaces, fell very confident about that.

Yes, most of the return fixtures against top teams are at home and we are a much better team than the bottom 14.  We'll win more than we lose from here, that alone would have us battling for third, mix in more wins than losses and we should be OK, the ground work has been done.

66% and no goals says it all.

Final third poor and sudden awful defending.....Vale could of won 4:2!

Doyle unlucky ref Keeper trapping the ball with his ankles! Why was he waving at the crowd? :(

Injuries compounded a shit day!

January looks to be our biggest month, on and off the pitch.

On to Argyle, I'm going and wearing the lucky boots.

This has been a sub plot for a while, along with resolving the loan situations.  When putting the two together, it throws up doubt, so really a case of wait and see.  The next two games should give us a fair indicator.

Wellens:

"Proud of players today, considering all the things that could go wrong did.

Just didn't happen for us today.

Wish he had made more changes. Looked at Boxing Day performance, didn't think he needed to. Beauty of hindsight.

Few comments about the Ref. Strange for only 2mins added. Especially when Pope took 2mins to walk off when subbed. Expected more. A lot went against us.

Want to get another 7/8 game winning run again. Says if he made 4/5 changes today and we lost people would be pointing the finger so tough to juggle. This time of year. Plymouth in mind. Players with bugs etc.

If Keshi scores different story.

Shocking tackle on Ian. Ref should've been stronger. Had him before v Numb. Was fair in assessment as mentioned Grant made a foul too.

Zeki not ready for Plym (we've heard that before) and Baudry out for 2-3weeks. Will have to think about CB pairing with Zakuani for Plymouth and Bradford.

Nothing concrete on loans yet. Will have to get a shift on for CB but not in time for NYD.

Schedule ridiculous and references picking up injuries and heavier pitches."

That was about it. Honest, possibly painted it a little more negatively but I think after he's had chance to reflect and assess he may think a little differently. We usually bounce back. I think Zeki not being ready could be a bluff to give Plymouth the run around.

To be honest on reflection now I’m on the way home the result is irrelevant so I’m over that. The injuries will have a bigger impact on our near term chances than any single result. To go from a near fully fit squad at the Vegans to be missing 3 (or 4 if you include Iandolo) for the next few games is a big blow. Today even excluding the result it was our worst nightmares becoming reality, you don’t realise how key Baudry and Fryers are to the way we play until we are without them as most of our moves start at the back and meant Benda had to look long which didn’t work. Zakuani is a good stopper but he beyond poor with his feet and Vale knew that just letting have the ball.

Think about our DIRE predicament. Should we pull ourselves together and go on another run the likes of the one just ended, then I predict promotion. Be mindful, other teams will have to gather a monumental head of fucking steam to keep pace with what looks like an all be it small pack pulling away.

Didn’t see the game yesterday but I really feel that we need both Grant and Lydon in midfield away from home. Then Doughty at 8. Keshi out wide or come on for Doughty.

All academic now as I assume Grant will have to play CB on NYD. Would prefer Rose comes in so we can push Doughty forward rather than DJ starting at 10.

Totally agree. Nasty tackle. Two footed and out of control. Looks like ref let a fair number go.
First goal is a shared error between Grant and Zakuani. Clearly Zakuani was drawn by the scorers run and failed to come back with him - he is simply too slow and Vale knew that. However, Grant should really cover for him and not let the runner come back. Can understand why he did as Fryers probably would have made it easily.

Get well soon Ian, I guess. It's a strange one with Ian; he has ability going forward and would be a great winger/LM/LWB. His defensive traits still require an element of back-up/hand-holding. Essentially, he's a luxury player in the kind of Anthony McNamee mould. Except young Ian blows more cold than hot.

It's a shame because I like him. Had he not got injured/we had more left sided options, I would've transfer listed him. He could flourish played in his very fixed role. A manager who manages to find his almost niche position would have a good player. I fear time is running out for him here and he may now have played his last game, for Town. If we go up, I would sell/release.

Did you actually read what I put? "Had he NOT got INJURED,...I would've transfer listed him." Key word being NOT. Referring to transfer listing him in this January window.

Then with regards a broken leg, we don't know the extent or if he even has yet but you recover from a bone break/fracture much quicker than a muscle/ligament tear a la Conroy. Seem to remember from some training I did a while back (it may be outdated but unlikely), a fracture takes about 6 weeks, an actual break is about double that. Depends on severity and individual (we all heal at different rates) but even if Ian has the latter then he could be training again by April.

I'll say it again; had he NOT got injured/we didn't have limited left sided options, I would've transfer listed him in this window. If we go up, I would sell/release him (don't know his contract situation) in the Summer.
