Put the Turkey down, there's football to get your teeth into for Boxing day.
Town at home to Cambridge, who have not won away since September. Oh my  ???

Town 1-1 Cambridge (Att: 7,536 [203 away])

The return of Knoyle who left because of Cambridge’s ‘ambition’ or more likely because Wellens said he’d struggle to get in the team. When you look at Caddis, Hunt and Donohue you realise he was actually bang average and poor at best when attacking.

As for the game, I’d be happy with more of the same at home with a 1-0 or 2-0 win.

My daughter's 16th birthday - that's 15 Boxing Day games that I've missed so far. I've offered her a shopping trip to Bluewater on the 27th but no luck so far.

3-0 to the Town.

I'm ‘entertaining’ Boxing Day so I’m going to try and avoid the score and watch the game when it’s put up on the website.

I was going to watch as per normal but was told it was unsocial. I’m doing a traditional Boxing Day chilli!

A few views from their forum about the upcoming game.

Quote
The only predictable thing about us is that you can rely on us not to get turned over. I think that'll always give us a chance.

hopefully we absolutely crush this cowardly flushed turd of a football club. Probably more than any other club in this league we owe them a proper bruising

We will get stuffed (sorry) 4-0.

What do you base that on?
We’ve not been stuffed in a game this season if you exclude Swansea.
I personally don’t see us winning but I think 2-0 at worse!!

I base it on us being useless at set piece defending, no fire power, and Swindon being top.

I feel like our problem is that we struggle to dictate the tempo of the game against sides that look to do to us what we'll want to do to Swindon (absorb pressure, make the most of your counter attacks by getting the ball forward quickly). We did a fairly good job of taking the game to Orient in the second half

Sorry this could possibly be the game we get thumped ,certainly won’t be in my accumulator for a away win

1st return fixture of the season after we beat them fairly comfortably 1-0 at their place back in September with a poachers goal from Yates. We were far from our best in that game but still won. I remember Cambs had 3 of the slowest CB's I have ever seen, even Doyle was beating them for pace!

They seem to have reverted back to a 2 CB line up and getting some decent results.

They have won away games at Crewe, Colchester and Mansfield (4-0) and beaten Exeter at home 4-0, but have also been beaten by Walsall, Orient and Oldham.

Only Northampton have beaten them by a 2 goal margin in the league and only Orient have managed to score 3 goals against them, although Swansea put 6 past them in the LC.

Their leading scorer this season so far is famous singer/songwriter Sam Smith on loan to them from Capitol Records, he has scored 5 league goals so far plus 3 in the cups and will be the danger man up front for them with Ex Town player Marc Richards coming off the bench recently a few times but not starting very often. And other ex Town player Knoyle has been injured for the past few weeks.

Two things come to mind.  Both from a while ago.

First (& this is a bit weak), we came up against them several times in the early 1990s.  Both clubs doing well and challenging for promotion to the Premier League.  Polar opposites in terms of playing style, though.  The press favoured our free-flowing game (under Hoddle) massively over Cambridge's route 1, lump it forward game (under John Beck).  I imagine that it got under their noses a bit.

Then I think there was a game (FA Cup ?) maybe 10 years later that we called off during the fuel protests.  Cambridge were flying high at the time, and they didn't like it.  Am I remembering this correctly?

Remember going there with Hoddle and wrecking Beck’s ‘footballing’ philosophy.

They seemed to have stayed the same for decades. Did they drop out of the league along the way?

What a non-entity of a club.

Perhaps it's becasue Power was in charge and nearly took them out of the Conference. Jimmy Quinn cam in as gaffer late on and did enough to keep them up.

Hi folks

Can anyone help ?

It seems that there are no trains from Bristol that day,
despite the fact that engineering works are not happening anywhere near either town (!)

There also seem to be no coaches either !

Anyone have any suggestions for how to get there
(witticisms aside)

Thanks

Almost Luke Williams-esque this from Calderwood

‘From the outside people might have thought we would win [against Orient] and lose on Boxing Day, if we can turn that around I don’t think we will have lost anything from what people think we could have gained,” he said.

I totally agree he should get a really warm welcome and it baffles me how he never had the opportunity to become Swindons manager over the years considering recent years we've had so many.

Town End is empty though. Could be one of our bigger ones for sure. Cambridge are a huge club according to Knoyle so maybe they're bringing a few thousand down?

Today is a great chance for Town to get a few extra bums on seats and for us to turn in a great passing flowing performance with a few goals and a win that will keep those extra punters coming for the rest of the season.

The only thing that could work against us is the weather, which will affect a few floating fans, otherwise get them in and show them the best of Swindon under Wellens.

I would love it to be 90 minutes of free flowing dominant football culminating in a resounding 4-0 win.

In reality I expect it will be a hard fought slog in (presumably) pretty shit conditions.

2-1 Doyle, Anderson...

Hopefully 'Fridge' will get a warm reception but it was pretty indifferent up there to be honest. I suppose the fact of the matter is that an increasingly large number of Town fans were not around when he was playing for us

I assumed the club were saving money by closing parts of the stand but perhaps there's issues with the seats/structure/facilities.

Judging by online tickets sales, it should be a 9k crowd, which on the one hand is excellent, but will mean that some of the "get it forward" brigade are back in attendance. Cambridge will no doubt set out to hold what they have so an early goal will be useful to bring them out more and then we could go on to score 3 or 4.  Struggle to break them down and/or concede first and it could be a struggle particularly for the less regular fans to keep the positivity going. Therefore hoping for a 3-0, dreading a 1-1.

Yeah you make some very valid points.

Today they will set out to be very hard to beat and try and hit us on the counter, something many teams do and very few actually achieve that.

I hope the fans keep patient even if we havent scored by the 75th minute or later, I think the wind and rain could have a major factor in todays result, being the leveller between the teams.

My last three games were 4-0, 3-1 and 3-0 victories.

I'm not taking all the credit though.

Both not fully fit according to Power, Fryers has the slightly worse of the injuries but neither are too bad.

I wonder why the club didn't open the far end of the Arkell's for today's game, with only singles left in the stand?

I haven't been able to go to many games recently, is there some sort of speed-dating area??

From some Cambridge fans..

Quote
At the game in the Swindon end. Completely unfair score line on the balance of play - we’ve not been bad until the last 5 mins or so. Would like to see the penalty award again, my Swindon supporting friend thinks it was just shoulder to shoulder contact and shouldn’t have been given. 3rd goal moved a crazy amount in the air, was headed to the keeper’s top left corner and ended up to the right of Mitov.

We’ve attacked down the right well for most of the match and really should have scored 1 or 2 by now ourselves. Our finishing has been the problem more than the defence.
What game is he watching?

Quote
We’ve been alright, but funnily enough the team who are top of the table have been better.

Oh we’ve certainly been worse than Swindon for more than 5 minutes, but I think most of that time it’s been Swindon being good more than us being bad. If we’d taken a chance and kept our heads we might be going in something like 2-1 down, which wouldn’t be a bad reflection of the half imo.

Losing away from home to a team who are clearly the best side in the division is not a disgrace.

Rolling over and having your tummy tickled is not acceptable though.

This is very pleasant.

On the other hand I've just discovered my wife thinks Eoin Doyle is called Own Goal. I said '11 games in a row for Eoin Doyle' and she said 'Why do other teams keep scoring for you.' it took a reasonable amount of explaining.

When you can win 4-0 in comfort without stretching ourselves or being anywhere near our best then that bodes well for the season. Nobody played badly we just never really got out of 2nd gear again and controlled the game and never looked like conceding all game.

1st Boxing Day win since 2006.

A walk in the park. 3-0 flattered our general play at half time, but Anderson’s first two - and the one in the 2nd half, we’re all good goals. What a bonus if he goes on a run. What we did excellently was to see the game out, and manage that 2nd half as if it was a light training session. Zakuani did well having not played for a while and nice to have decent cover like him, Rose, etc.

Three giant CB's might be ok to combat an aerial & physical threat, except that we don't really have one.
They looked threatening early on, but in the end were flushed away easily & thanks for the 6 points and two clean sheets.

Zakuani filled in very well and Iandolo did ok.

So 11 consecutive league games for Doyle.
Is that the club record, or one more needed?

Pretty good! Second half was as expected really, Keshis hattrick a nice bonus. We did really well keeping them quiet after the first 10/15m  where they were really pressing, but lacked the quality in the final third.

Doughts played some really nice balls, if Doyle's the ginger Pele he's the Posh Pirlo, and Iandolo was also really good down the left. Came over and looked for a disabled kid afterwards to say hello, nice to see the squad taking the time after the game - led by Caddis of course.

Looking at the two it was obvious who the in form team was, and who the team shaping its of for league 1 football is. It's a tidy looking squad, if a tad oversized currently.

It feels like we're in a game of Football manager right now with the squad makeup and success, very odd feeling as a Town fan. AND I didn't hear "GET IT FORWARD!" once...

Assist/key touches from Woolery for 2nd, 3rd and 4th goal - he’s improved so much in the past two months.

It feels like Xmas 2012-13 - beating Tranmere & Portsmouth 5-0 in 10 days under PdC - where we have 8 players capable of creating a goal. Can just wear teams down from multiple positions

Wouldn’t like to see a good side attack us down their right side with Doughty, Iandolo and Zakuani covering that side. Lyden and Donohue (and Fyers and Hunt - what’s the news on them?) all to come back in though if needed so not a worry.

Caddis has been offered a deal until the end of the season which is mulling over. His family is back in Scotland though.

Power said we have to wait and see what parent clubs will do. Played his hand close to his chest but said Jewell has been tasked with lining up Plans Bs.

One Club had definitely agreed to an extention (I think)...RW didn't say who. All the loan players want to stay. Would be doing all they could to keep them, not their players so out of their hands. Can only control what we can control etc. Jewell talking to Bradford (helps that he is a legend there)...

Cards still very close to the chest and quite diplomatic - which is what you want really...

Seen him a few times now since his return, and I'd have him.in the team every week.  Passion combined with experience/composure.  That said, some of his distribution today was less than brilliant...but you look past that when you see (a) the extra dimension he gives the team; and (b) what giving the proverbial 110% really looks like.  I just love watching him play.

I do remember worrying about Caddis when he was first with us due to his lack of height and whether he'd be caught out at the back post.

I soon realised that his positional awareness and intelligence was such that it was no problem.  Again today he put himself in the right place to head the ball out despite a foot of height difference.

Loved having him back.  Player well above this level.

I would tie down Caddis on a 2 year contract. Hes good enough and fit enough.

I would also give Zakuani a deal he is a proper stopper akin to Nelson and good backup, gave everything yesterday and marked their striker out of the game for pretty much all the game.

Grant is not wanted by Shrews and I think we will sign him on a perm, Benda is here for the season and I am pretty sure Power suggested that Yates is too and that neither parent club will recall them in January.

Power also said he fully expects DJ to stay as the player and Norwich are happy with his the current arrangement.

He also stated that Doyle himself has spoken to his agent, Bradfords manager and their chairman and told them he wants to stay with us and has done everything he can, Power also said he has spoken to them and made an offer, now its down to Bradford as they could still recall him and its out of Swindons hands now.

On an aside, back to the Ginger Assassin.

He is now on 11 consecutive match scoring run, equalling the 89 year old record by Harry Morris.

If he scores in one more match he will obviously become the Swindon consecutive record holder but he will also be equal 2nd in the English and Bristish record books equal with Jimmy Dunne of Sheff Utd who managed 12 but still a few games behind the great Stan Mortensen who holds the English and British record of 15 consucutive scoring runs way back in 1951.

Messi hold the world record of 21 matches but Doyle is obviously never going to be able to get anywhere near that.

Congratulations Eoin, thats some record already.

No the record is just games he plays in so even if he doesnt come back for 3 matches he could still feasibly break the record.

Its just consecutive games scored by the player not consecutive matches played by the club.

Certainly enjoyed that more than last time we were at home on Boxing Day!

I make yesterday our first home Boxing Day win since 06.  We haven't played too many games mind, due to the club requesting away fixtures, leading to 9 years in a row on the road.  That situation was one of the more bizarre matters STFC of recent years, as the fans assumed it was the usual FL treating the club like shit until it emerged we'd requested it.

One assumes that the cost of putting on a festive fixture outweigh the increased gate, which in this day and age isn't the bumper numbers of old, when the working man was desperate to get out of the house, or the missus's apron strings.  Now shopping seems to be the thing....

Bollocks. No way did we request away games. Also not at all how fixtures work on boxing day.

Feel free to provide any sort of quote of proof.

I agree.  Whole lot of people straight away saying how dumb that was.

I recall the comparison being drawn was the way the club let Downsborough go.

Oh sure, a load of people grumbled. But as long as we were winning, most gave a free pass to the culture of bullying that came along with the rest of the shtick.

Anyway, I don’t want to detract from the general merriment. I’m just grumpy because I can’t watch the Town today.

Great result.  And pretty good results elsewhere.

Possibly being unrealistic here but I was a bit disappointed with the attendance.
A little disappointing but still the highest attendance in league 2, even higher than 5 games in league 1.    Not sure if it's correct but according to the paper Numb only had a gate of 1,222,  even Macclesfield had a gate of 1,991 for the 'high flying' Grimsby - so could be much worse.

Numb figure caught my eye, bit can't be right for Plymuff as they'd bring that many themselves, in fact it could be the away figure.

From my dodgy memory I’m not sure about that.

Pretty sure most people weren’t happy and could see who was in the wrong at the time. Problem was he bombed a player every week or 2 so it become the norm in a way.
IIRC Di Canio bombed out Caddis for coming back unfit or overweight for pre season after the birth of his child.

Interestingly, the same happened at Birmingham under Gary Rowett.

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/birmingham-city-boss-gary-rowett-11769064

Caddis disputed that and said that's the way he is and doesn't feel the need to lose weight.

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/birmingham-city-defender-paul-caddis-11858510

Wellens seems to be flexible with training etc as he allows Doyle to take days off to allow him to travel from Liverpool. Maybe he takes the view if you're doing the business you can be trusted.

Not bad for them. I don’t think our attendance was too bad. I mean if you look at the 11/12 season, we only really started to get the 10k+ for the big games near the end of the season against Plymouth and Vale. 8.2k is a good start and if the form carries on, I’m sure some 9-10k attendances will start appearing again.

Last couple of views from Cambridge fans on yesterday.

Quote
In all my 40 years of watch ‘U’s at Swindon, I’ve never seen them turned over with such ease. Sure Cambridge are a big athletic side, but realistically offer nothing. Maybe I’m being unfair as Swindon will turn over much better sides than Cambridge United.
One point I want to make is why Kyle Knoyle would want to leave Swindon for that shower! He could easily be playing for Swindon on their way to winning Div 1!

Swindon are decent enough, but we made that far too easy for them. They are no World beaters, but in a league of mediocrity they do stand out.

I think 8,200-ish was a great crowd, I don't see any reason why anyone would be disappointed with it...

It was 2,000 more than the next highest attendance in L2,
The majority of the Clubs in our division will never get even remotely close to that figure - ever.
And most importantly, it's going in the right direction and no doubt will continue to rise as the wins continue to stack up.

Reasons to be cheerful and all that...

Every season, bar none, has people saying the league this year is piss poor. We have, obviously, improved leaps and bounds, but are we really only turning over a bunch of duds?.

This is our 3rd season in L2 and they all seem much of a muchness to me. Luton were a good side but didn’t even win the league. Lincoln bulldozered there way out of here. Exeter always try and play some decent stuff but ultimately run out of steam. The relegated teams from L1 are doing a passable impression of us in our first season. FGR and Numb just aren’t good enough.

Colchester are the ones to look out for.

Theo Robinson kicked Baudry off the ball and should have been sent off. Broadbent then came on and looked like he’d never played football before. Plus Adam May started which basically has starting with 10 players so a lot has changed since then.

Must be a good 12 years since Town won on my Birthday and what win it was. Great to see that we can win 4 - 0 and still not even be at our very best.

8.5k att. is pretty fine for L2 (Div 4, Reg), considering when Brentford, Reading & Luton of the Championship (Div 2) only had around 11-12k. In L1(Div 3), The average on quick look worked out at around 8k. Only thanks to Portsmouth (18k), Ipswich (22k) and Sunderland (33k), who disappointed with a goalless draw v Bolton. Burton (c3.5k), Peterborough (c6.5k), Rochdale (c3k), Shrews (c7.5k) and Sarfend (c6k) all recorded less than Town. Blackpool and Rovers weren't many bums ahead either.

All in all, good numbers on the field, watching and on the table. Long may it continue. It's looking very good

Not sure why people are bemoaning the crowd size

Looking back at 11/12, and the crowd size is comparable to our home Christmas fixture that year (on 2nd Jan), of 8.3k at home to afc Wimbledon (who, and this is a complete guess, would have likely bought more fans than Cambridge did)

We only started tipping gates of 9k regularly from March onwards - by when we’d lost 1 in 12, and were 8 points clear with 12 games to go and, looking back, promotion all but wrapped up

Attendances have only been c.500 per game below where they were last time we were in this division - not ‘good’, by any means, but not terrible when you consider we’ve been a mediocre league two side for two seasons in a row, and last time we were 12 months off a league one play off final

We’re winning - that means people come back to watch the games and magically rediscover their ‘love’ of football again. You see it plenty enough on this forum

I noticed Reading V QPR was 12000 which isn't very good for a local championship game so 8200 really isn't bad considering there were very few Cambridge fans and not much of an attraction. Imagine if we had played Plymouth on Boxing Day the crowd would have been nearer to 12k or possibly more

Title: Re: Swindon v Cambridge pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, December 28, 2019, 12:04:56
8,211 isn't bad at all, last season home and away we were only watched by bigger crowds twice, once away at Lincoln 8,400(7,900 home fans) and the last home game of the season against Notts County (8,600) when they had 2,200+ away supporters.

The season before then home and away we were only watched by more fans in games away at Luton, Coventry and Lincoln again none of them broke 9k and in 1 home game, the game vs Luton when 8,526 turned up for the Boxing Day game, bolstered again by 2,000+ away fans.

Even the home game vs Oxford in 2017 in L1 the attendance was only 10,658 with 2,400 away fans in attendance meaning the home fan turn out was just 8,258 and on Boxing Day I would say there were about 200 Cambridge fans so the home turn out was 8,000. So pretty comparable home numbers to a game with Oxford!

A while back there was an interesting stat, that for some reason we seem to get fewer travelling fans than most other clubs... I offered expense as a reason, to be told by some of the usual suspects, noooo. The price list to show it to be the case, we were most expensive, albeit not by much, seemingly not enough to open closed minds.

Yep also consider that it's only about 30 miles from QPR to Reading, and another " along the M4 fixture", so to speak - Cardiff v Millwall had c22k. Okay there was the Neil Harris effect at play but still, 10k more and an extra 120 mile (or 240 miles extra round trip) that was indeed a good turn out. Just shows how plastic those Reading lot are. Too rainy for the little petals?

Both sets of teams are mid table so similar motivation. Yes Reading holds about 25k to Cardiff's 32k? but still Reading half full, Cardiff 2/³rds full. Hang your heads, plastic Royals.

It was a strange deal if I remember rightly though, we only got the discount once 6000 people purchased season tickets, the 6000 never happened though so neither did the full discount.
I imagine if we did what Bradford do and offered guaranteed £150 season tickets then we probably would end up with a decent uptake especially if the pay monthly option was still available. But to make it worthwhile and not make a loss we’d have to more than double the number of current season ticket holders which isn’t going to happen so the club are right with their approach.

We live in an age where most people with anything more than a passing interest in football are only really interested in top tier teams. We all know that. Very few give two boots about their local side.  I sometimes have to drag my kids to matches but I hope that they will eventually appreciate the merits of what the basement of league football can offer.

Promotion to league one is unlikely to boost attendances to significantly more than a 9k average. Yes, you may get some more 'worms' coming out of the woodwork.  However, it is unlikely that we will see an influx of punters who are prepared to get out and watch a product which differs substantially from what they see on MOTD.

The Wrexham one . . mm the less said the better.
Can remember going to Burnley, Pompey. The Stoke special was cancelled due to a train drivers strike but still an eventful trip.

Aldershot away in the FA Cup and Swansea on Boxing Day at the Vetch both around 79. I also remember Liverpool away in the league cup when we got stuffed 5-0 and supporters who left stuff on the train had it stolen.
I heard many bad stories of Everton away in the replay 76/77

Wrexham was mayhem from the minute it pulled into Swindon station until it, eventually, got back. I got involved in somebody else’s fight while it was still on the platform. Turned round and somebody had pinched my carry out!

Never really knew why it turned out like that

Imagine what stories Millwall fans who used specials would have!

alright stattonati, what's the most consecutive games scored in in the EFL?

I can find top flight easily enough (12, or 15 if you count the run excluding games not available due to injury)
Individual player consecutive scoring run in the EFL you mean? 10 by Eoin Doyle, nobody else has got close to that.

all time record?

Strange you mention that. British Transport Police are championing a return. Seems the more ‘energetic’ fans are annoying the regular passengers.

In some cases the working man has been priced out of football - even at L2 level. £20 or £25 a ticket is bloody expensive.

Do a Bradford. STs work out at£6 per game. Never happen, though.

No doubt football is too expensive for some, even at this level, but we were £21 a ticket for the side stands in about 2003 if I remember correctly.

Our prices these days aren't too horrendous, we just need to coincide good fortunes on the pitch with ground redevelopment, then we can mirror a Swansea, Hull or Reading trajectory. 12,000 at Reading vs. QPR might look a bit shit but anyone who went to Elm Park should know they've still moved on a long way from those times.

Because now they could have it all on camera and nick anyone who sneezed funny?

By specifically not using the specials?

Indeed, West Ham were banned from Football Specials in the mid 70s by the BTP hence they got on standard Inter City trains...which explains their nickname.

How many firm's names would be related to trains if you added them up? Pompey, Bristol City, Leeds(?) off the top of my head. Obviously a lot have changed over time.

Newcastle?

Pretty sure Man Utd was too, the most famous though of course are the ICF and the 657 crew, named after the train from Fratton at 6.57pm after home games.

6.57am was the train they caught for away games I think.

not absolute tosh surely.

from what I've read that actively avoided football specials, and wore casual clothes to try and stay under the radar.

but they were named after the inter city train service.

Indeed.

Another from wiki.

Quote
The Inter City Firm that follows West Ham United, was named after the InterCity trains they travelled on. Named after the regular services they travelled on due to them being less heavily policed than football specials.

Spot on the 6.57 firm were well known in the 80's onwards and many clips on YouTube to back it up
