Title: Swindon v Oldham pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, 13:21:33
:) exciting stuff. We entertain Oldham this Saturday and I'm surprised to see our last 7 home games against them mirrors my attendance results  :(

Played 7
Won 0
Drawn 4
Lost 3.

Surely that has to change this Saturday.
I'll go 3-1 (att: 6,611. 248 of them)

Headlines from Richie Wellens' pre-match press conference today:

- Dion Donahue signing not able to be registered until 2nd January, now confirmed.
- Keshi Anderson will return to the squad for Oldham game
- Player injured in training today, will mean the first XI will need to change for Oldham (albeit - pinch of salt - Richie loves a pre-match mind game!)

Sgt. Rock is the ref. He was in charge of our defeat to Newport.

Think he’s a twat.

‘Key player’ ‘Significant injury’ ‘playing very well’.

That’s just about everyone. Must be a bad one if he’s already about a January replacement.

Down the years Oldham at the CG has been the good, the bad, and the ugly.

My first memory was a 6-3 win in Dec 66.... we went 1 down were 2-1 up at half time, and then 5-1 up before Oldham hit back to make it 5-3 then the Don completed his hat trick. 3 years later we rolled them 5-1 with Chris Jones scoring a hat trick. That was good.

Bad was losing to them in the last minute on the Prem CG debut... small crowd and any feelgood factor long gone.

Ugly.... anything recent.

So it's been terrible since 1969 then? We'll dick them on Saturday.

Hopefully not too serious. Fryers injury would be bad we’ve had a great record with him and Baudry together.

True but Zakuani could adequately fill in there if needed, or even Broadbent who looked way better in his last 2 appearances than previously this season.

Up front we have DJ and Isgrove to bring in on the wings if its Woolery, We could push Woolery up front if its Yates or Doyle injured.

Hunt and Caddis can fill in at either fullback position and Iandolo can fill in there if needed.

In midfield we have Rose who we can bring in, also Anderson if he is indeed fit again although we would need to change the shape of the team a little to accomodate any of these changes I think we have enough strength to cope with a single injury in this squad.

Was just checking Swindon consecutive scoring records and as far as I can see Doyle is 3rd in the record books currently with his 11 goals in 8 consecutive league matches.

Back in the 1927-28 season Harry Morris scored 15 goals in 9 consecutive league games.

The season before Harry Morris scored an incredible 19 goals in 10 consecutive league matches the only time a Swindon Town player has managed that feat.

It would be some achievement if Eoin Doyle managed to equal that 9 game scoring run which would take him to equal 2nd in the list.

I would add Doughty to the key players list.
Winning run started with him coming back in?
No real like for like replacement without having to tweak the system?

I think any player that comes in then we would have to change the shape and style of how we are playing currently, even down to Benda being replaced by LMc.

Every player has his strengths and knows his role now the season has progressed and a change could be handled but things would definately have to change. We have no real like for like with any of the midfielders, Lyden, Grant and Doughty all have very different strengths than Rose or Anderson.

We’ve had some bad loanees down the years but he must be amongst the worst. Absolutely no redeeming features to his play and terrible in every appearance for us.

I reckon we have 3 ‘key’ players - Doyle, Yates and Grant. So it’s one of them. Anyone else we have adequate cover for.

These 3 have certainly been the stand out players over the last 6 games. However I believe we have adequate cover upfront if either Doyle or Yates are injured, particularly now that Isgrove and Anderson are back. Yates can play central if Doyle is out and we have DJ and Woolery also to cover the front 3 positions.

In midfield, Doughty's AM role could be covered by Anderson ( assuming 100% fit) although the loss of Lyden would be more of a concern, where Rose, as his replacement, being left footed, somewhat unbalances the team. If its Grant that is out then we are again weakened where Rose, although a more natural replacement than for Lyden, is nowhere near as physically dominant as Grant.

It is central defence that an injury would concern me most, as Baudry and Fryers have been outstanding as a pair and can not be easily replaced. Broadbent is the obvious candidate but is miles away from either in terms of distribution. Wellens comment that we have one or two options might suggest it is indeed a central defender that is injured with the option of Grant moving to centre back. Against Oldham this may not be a major problem, but against the better teams eg FGR, Plymouth, Bradford, this could be an issue if the injury is longer term, hence the requirement to bring in another centre back.

Either full back could be covered by Iandolo, although leaves us short on the bench until Donahue is available.

So in order of who I wouldnt want injured I would go Baudry, Fryers, Lyden, Grant, Doughty, Doyle then Yates.

Based on Wellens comments I suggest either Baudry/Fryers or Doughty as the injured player.

Nightmare scenario is that it’s Yates and then Doyle gets recalled - or vice versa

Thing is, if it is a secret why Wellens mentioned it at all.

The only inadequate cover, as in like for like, is Baudry or Fryers. Broadbent can do a job, but it won’t be the controlled play at the back of those 2.

It was closed on Monday, well sort of, typically I had a walk planned out from Avebury which involved parking there and using the 49 for outward journey, then return to car.   Had to bin the plan, and go up to Ridgeway instead via Hackpen. It was more or less dark for the return chunk and you could see a long string of lights on cars which then seemed to using the 361, as was the 49

Oldham have only lost 2 more games than Swindon on 7 defeats but sit in a lowly 21st place having only won 4 times so far.

But the won their last away game at Newport 1-0, they have also beaten Walsall at home, Morecambe at home and Cambridge away.

They have also been trounced by Mansfield 6-1 back in October, they are one of the leagues lowest scorers with just 20 goals from their 19 matches.

Their leading scorers are winger Jonny Smith on 4, Christopher Missilou and Filipe Morais both midfielders on 3 each.

Oldham have no players or staff with a Swindon connection.

Swindon though have Richie Wellens, Steve Midenhall, Tommy Wright and Paul Jewell all with Oldham Athletic connections.

On the playing staff we have ex Latics players Eoin Doyle, Rob Hunt, Anthony Grant and Jordan Lyden playing for us.

Although Oldham are unbeaten in the league in the last 5 games so will be hard to beat. Their form recently is LDLLWDDWD.

Our form over the same period is LDLWWWWWW.

If Doyle can score tomorrow that will be the first time since 1928 that a Swindon player has scored in 9 consecutive games, that would be some achievement.

If we win it will be the first time we have won 7 league games in a row since 2012 when under PdC we had a run of 10 consecutive wins.

Oldham are unbeaten in their last 7 matches at the CG with our last win being in 2010 but overall we have won 13 games at the CG between the sides and Oldham have won 10 times with 7 being drawn.

This is a tricky one to call tomorrow - Oldham have drawn a lot of games and don’t score many goals, which suggests they may set up defensively, and we have at times struggled against teams who do this at the CG.
If we score early we could win comfortably, but we may have another low scoring win on our hands. Three points here will set us up nicely for the Christmas period, when we have some tough looking fixtures.
I think we will win by either 1-0 or 2-0.

On the “mystery injury” , my concern is that it’s one of Baudry or Fryers (pure guesswork). Their partnership has been one of the less heavily highlighted parts of our rise up the table (winning run) but very important in my view. Whilst we have options at the back defensively, neither Zakuani nor Broadbent can form the basis of our passing game from the back as effectively as Baudry and Fryers who are both comfortable in possession. We saw this in the period after Conroy’s injury before Fryers came back from his, and also when Baudry missed a couple of games.

The only inadequacy in replacement we have is striker. Someone can come in and 'do a job' within the rest of the team, we may have to change it up a bit style of play / formation but the question is, was that going to happen anyway with the reintroduction of Isgrove and Anderson?

Some pre match comments about us and Wellens, some complimentary some seemingly wide of the mark, like the comment about us being fortunate at Grimsby last week, that could not be further from the truth.
Quote
So playing top of the league on Saturday, who have won their last 6 league games on the bounce, are the highest scorers in the division, have our ex favourite ginger one on fire who has netted 17 times in 16 games this season, and have our berated ex manager in charge who has the hump with Al.... What could possibly go wrong!!

Should be several nil, but wouldn’t put it past us to somehow come away with a smash & grab 1-0.

We'll either lose by a little or lose by a lot here, I'm afraid.

If we keep them (Doyle) down to three, I'll class it as a result.

Swindon are a division 2 not a Premieship team, yet we seem to be treating them as unbeatable.
We have seen Doyle score goals here, but let's not forget he was anonymous in many games.
Be just like Latics to sneak a 1 nil win.

Swindon are a 2nd division team you are spot on. They also happen to be a darn sight better football side than us as well.

Generally, I have been optimistic, even when we've struggled. But I've always looked to see if I can spot something positive on the horizon.
I've never in my life felt like deserting the club I've loved for so long, but since AL and ML took over, I just don't recognise it any more.
We've got a team of misfits that the Brothers Numbnuts think are world beaters. Not from what I've seen, they're not.
I'll go to Swindon with hope of a result more than expectation and I guess it would be just like us to sneak a scrappy 1-0 win, but I just don't see it happening.

When we won 1-0 at Newport, we caught them in a bad patch of form - they've just lost their last 4 in succession, including against us. Contrast that to Swindon, who are in a superb run of form and I just can't see us getting anything

As an aside, it really does make you wonder what went on regarding Wellens. He had us playing excellent football initially - and then it just nosedived, leading to relegation. Presently, he looks like an accomplished manager. We'll probably never know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Whilst Swindon are top and are registering a few good wins with Doyle apparently in great form again under Wellens, Latics have throughout history always managed to throw in the odd really unexpected cracking result.  I can't see us going toe-to-toe with Swindon under Maamria or with the players at our disposal - think we will try and sit in and frustrate them and try and pick them off via Smith (not much else in the team looks dangerous going forwards).

I think they have recently had trouble despatching teams at home, their good wins tend to be away so I am not totally writing this one off. Equally I have seen nothing yet in this Division, every team is pretty much of a muchness, although I have to say I think Latics league position is probably a fair reflection of our ability.

Wellens seems to struggle to find a Plan B if things are not going well on the pitch hence he is in league 2.

He's in league 2 because he was truly shafted by the ownership when he was here and is rebuilding a fledgling managerial career and doing superbly. Was a huge mistake letting him go.

I say apparently because I have not seen Eoin play for them Danny, from newspaper reports they were a bit fortunate on Saturday at Grimsby but they ran out 3-0 winners so can't argue with that.

FWIW I would have kept Richie Wellens on but I think there is an issue about his plan B - he couldn't manage to get a squad of decent players (albeit one with no harmony) up to winning at least 1 of last 10 fixtures and so took us down to basement division for first time since 1971.

Wellens will try and take the game to us and alot will depend on how we can counter attack with Wilson and Smityh we do have abit of pace on the counter.

I saw them earlier in the season at Exeter and they were the best team I've seen in the league this season.  They dominated the first half and should've been well clear, 2nd half was even and good quality.  Doyle scored a typical Doyle goal late on and obviously he'll be a threat on Saturday, but he's scoring loads because he's got a lot of help around him.  Yates up front has scored steadily in the last 2 seasons at this level, Woolery, Isgrove and Anderson are direct wingers who have pace and Doughty's creative in the centre of the park.  They take a few risks playing it out from the back but they've got players who can do it well.

Dino says all Swindon's goals have been scored from inside the box, so he's going to play a high line to try and keep them out. Most clubs will have tried that already, but Swindon have succeeded in getting around them. The longer the game goes on the more pressure they will put on, and our high line will drop deeper and deeper.

I don't pay as much attention to other teams as many but I'm sure I even saw Doyle score one for them from outside the box on a highlights programme.

Wellens is no god, where would he be in the league without doyle!? People have short memories, shez signed doyle and Byrne and Bryan . The up lift in form was shez team and take away doyle from the Swindon team, u have a very different lay on land. Wellens is a Chancer,  who couldn't get one win from ten. Hes playing attractive attacking football, yep. But were 5 points clear of relegation with a team of absolute shite, anyone with a bit of cash could walk this league.

Fancy us for all three here. Not a happy clapper by any stretch but sitting in and showing no ambition suits us. 0-2 latics.

Wellens, although doing well, Really fell into a barrel of roses after leaving here, swindon have always been a decent set up and had he gone to a lesser club, then, I still think the same problems that dogged him here would be laid bare once more. Let's see if he ever steps up from this temporary lofty position

Always been a decent club? One of the select few that have managed to find their way from the Premier League to here.

And from their manager...

Quote
"They're the best team in the league right now. I think that if you look at the players they have, Mathieu Baudry has won promotion from this level twice in the last three years with Doncaster Rovers and Franchise and they've got Michael Doughty in the middle of the park with a terrific left foot, terrific box-to-box player.

"Also, they've Anthony Grant and he has won many promotions with different clubs and he's been around the block and their front three Kaiyne Woolery, Eoin Doyle and Jerry Yates they all can score and create goals and they're a real force going forward and they're a very good team."

I am pretty sure Grant has never featured in a promotion winning side in his career, I could be wrong though.

I’m more reassured that their manager appears to think Woolery scores goals. All his shots look like he’s kicking beach balls. Go ahead and double up on him Latics.

I think Woolery has improved on last season but he still is often indecisive when in good crossing or shooting positions, his heading and crossing have improved a lot but I feel he will be scrificed when Isgrove is back to full fitness for sure.

Just watched football focus where they interviewed two Peterborough strikers who have scored 13 goals each, saying they are the "most prolific strike partnership in the top 4 tiers of English football"
Dan Walker then said only Leicester come close.
Am i missing something here???

BBC.... you don't expect impartiality here. We're still paying the price for Jimmy Hill, Des Lynam and Hansen getting "stoned" v Villa

Eisa and Toney have 29 goals between them in all games, exactly the same ad Doyle and Yates have, so yes the BBC are shit as normal.

That is a very attacking line up TBF. I don't think any defence in this league can cope with that as a pacey attacking unit.

"Such is the extent of the mystery key player’s injury, Wellens stated he will work on a couple of options moving forward – suggesting a new addition may be required when the upcoming January transfer window opens. "

The Adver commented "SWINDON Town fans have a nervous three-day wait to find out which key player will be missing from Richie Wellens’ team for a substantial period of time. "

I think it's the highlighted.

Wellens is strictly business. He kept this quiet to to ensure that Oldham couldn't plan 100% accordingly.

Not so sure, we dominated the last 20 and they resorted to ridiculous time wasting, we had some good chances. That’s their game plan fucked now!

We are slightly fortunate that Oldham are not very good, a better side could well have punished us.

But, you can only beat whats in front of you, you wont see a better strike than that at any level.

Benda's goalkeeping=9 Benda's distribution=2.

Oh it was, they still look dangerous on the break. We haven't been that good but on the break we do look likely to score at every attack.

League Two as it stands...

With Cobblers leading against FVR we have opened up a 7pt gap on them and on 4th place. We also currently have a 10pt gap on 8th. Even 3pts on Exeter too.

Looking good, even if we were to end up drawing.

Comfortable, plenty more left to give from us, good signs with Anderson looking sharp and Isgrove coming on.  Could have had a couple more, could have stepped it up a bit.

My only issue with today  was Doughty defensively.  You have to offset that against his creativity and setting up a goal, so not too shabby overall.  He does get run around far too easily and then jump up and down flapping his arms frustrated with himself rather than switch back on again.

Overall, we still look a better team than the league - not that we are going to win every game, not that we won't have games where we are out done, but across this team we look like a group that could handle the next league up.  That's the gamble Wellens took in going for people with dodgy appearance records but probably with untapped potential.

Comfortable in the end, once we scored Oldhams game plan was ruined. They just resorted to dirty tricks and weren’t especially good at that either. Until the last 20 Grant was having his worst game for us but then he suddenly seemed to click into gear.

Looking forward to next week and hopefully seeing Cooper lose the plot, we all know how bad he is at turning around poor form so hopefully that continues next week.

The home performances are still worrying me a bit. We’ve played, and beat, some of the right old shite at home recently. Get one of the better sides here and we’ll struggle.
That doesn't necessarily follow...

Oldham can be a very good side if they weren't so negative from the start. Time wasting from the kick off , Ill be pissed off if Town ever decided to play like that from the word go.
I'm surprised any Oldham player would agree to play that style.  :suicide:

If we can keep racking up the wins v the lower orders of Div 4, then we can maybe afford a few draws against the upper echelons, of the current sides directly below us, we've visited 4 of them.

I think it's also easy for some to forget sometimes that when playing teams in the, let's say bottom six, they can be just as difficult matches and very poignant wins. For they need the points too.

This season does change a little in that sense, since only one will go down but 3pts are just as valuable wherever they come from.

Let's say we will be on 46pts after 23 games. You like to mention that we tend to do worse in the second half (some could argue this is down to games:weeks ratio as well as fatigue creeping in, amongst lots of other factors) of the season. If we were to only replicate the first half at a rate of 50% it would see us finish on 69pts. I think, with this season being so tight in the PO spots currently (due to inconsistency I believe), that 69pts would obtain the final PO spot.

Still, Morecambe could mathematically get to 90pts yet so keeping our feet on the ground, we're currently nearly halfway to securing football league safety :)

Absolutely. And it's sometimes as hard to beat the lower sides who sit in and try not to give anything away as it can be to deal with better sides playing more football, so giving you something to work with.
Flash's stinky guts got us through that.
And your masterstroke "double negative", offsetting Wellens' manager of the month award with your usually doom-laden presence. Take the credit where it's due.

Only 11 points off the magic 53 needed for safety now!

PO's are no use to us, it's auto or bust. ATM we are developing the habit of winning without necessarily being at our best, this is exactly what's needed, but uncertainty over what January will bring still means we shouldn't get too excited.

Correct, and this certainly applies to 1 or 2 posters on this thread.

We scored a couple of lovely goals today, Oldham didn’t work our keeper, and the win was therefore fully justified. Roll on Christmas time.

A deserved win today.
We struggled for 20 mins until RW adjusted the formation from 442 to 451 (or 4231).
The first goal made a big difference as Oldham couldn’t sit back.
We defended well generally - they didn’t have many chances (a couple late on and a crucial block by Hunt at 0-0.
Woolery’s pace was our biggest threat for much of the game, and he took his goal well.
Referee was poor - and this helped create some of the niggle second half - Grant could easily have been booked as a result.
Doyle also took his goal well.
The wind disrupted the game - this was obvious fro: the difference in Benda’s kicking between first and second halves, RW and Steve White also referred to this on the radio post match.
The most important thing on a day like today is getting another 3 points. Keep ticking up the points and see where we end up in April/ May.

All I ever do is call it as I see it, and atm for me getting through the window unscathed is key to how the second half of the season pans out, if it's favourable then no particular reason why we can't get an auto spot.

This is something that instills me with confidence.

Wellens does get it wrong sometimes. But when he does, he recognises that there is a problem and makes changes accordingly. He's good at spotting the 'common sense' stuff that so many fans spot but, for some reason, the experienced managers don't. How many times have we had managers standing in the dugout, arms folded, apparently clueless as what to do?

We've also been through a rough patch, a rough patch that lead some people to start asking for him to be sacked. But he turned it around. He obviously identified the problem (whatever it was) and fixed it.

I was basing that on a fairly realistic "worse case" scenario of only managing another 8 wins or equivalent, in the second half of the season. POs would be our worse case. Since we are opening up a gap, not only from 8th down but also from the auto spots too. It's points on the board that matter and we find ourselves in a position where even teams with GiH can't catch us. It will be down to game by game. As long as we keep putting points on said board, the rest have to play catch up.

On the point of say Doyle returning to Bradford; was interesting to hear Wellens bring up Theo Robinson, during post match. I have a feeling even if we didn't retain the services of Doyle, there would be a raft of capable strikers wanting to help us get over the line and add a promotion to their CV. A Paul Benson type of cameo. Finding someone capable of getting just half of Doyle's tally would be decent enough for the rest of the season. I see Obika scored a brace for St.Mirren today. What's your favourite, Nicky Ajose up to lately?  :hmmm:

Wasn't suggesting Theo, as he started at Sarfend this season, before experiencing racist abuse...from his own fans. Genuinely, just wondered what NA was up to.

I know it would seem cardinal sin to some but Obika might fancy coming on loan to Town and getting a promotion on his CV. Let's face it, he's winning nothing but local pride at St. Mirren. Plus, he's only 29.

Since scoring his first goal for them in Mid October, he's found some form. Scoring 5 in 10 or  a ratio of 1 in 2. I'm not suggesting a longterm  solution but he could do a job to get us over the line for the rest of the season. Then send him back to St. Mirren. If needed of course.

Hopefully we'll just be talking about Doyle getting to 30 gls as we romp this fucking tedious league.

Great win yesterday.
Not at our best for the first 30 or so, improved after that.

Clean sheets stacking up as well.
Three in first 10 games, five in next 11.

Most of the teams I've seen so far have been ok until the final third, then it's hope for the best after that.
Oldham were no different.

Hopefully this will be season of two consistent halves and not two very different ones.
1982-83. Second going into Christmas, lost a key game at home to Wimbledon. Faded and finished eighth.
No guarantees of anything at the moment.

We'll need to start clocking up some wins against direct rivals.
The upcoming fixtures mean that we'll have to.

Anyway, I'm off for a sip from a water bottle, hopefully without picking up an 'injury' in the process.

Turn of the year 82/83, some nasty fixtures.  The Wombles game was a day after a game at Aldershot..... there were a lot of Town fans present, a 1-1 draw not too bad.

We then had Scunny, I recall a bunch of decent lads from Lincs in the Shrivenham Road... it just took mentioning Jack Brownsword to tame them. Decent game ended 2-2, one from Steve Cammack, oneof those very decent lower league scorers.

Scunny like Grimsby have now a Tory MP.... is there any Div 4 outfit who doesn't  :hmmm:

Oldham can be a very good side if they weren't so negative from the start.

Agreed.  They looked very neat, particularly in first half, but a dreadful mindset.

Funny game, we didn't look very good but I was always confident we'd win, possibly because Oldham clearly thought so.

Managed to miss both goals having a piss.  The perils of drink.

Someone said in pub after that the two goals were our only two shots on target.

Really looking like a promotion team now.

From their forum, a fairly balanced piece TBH.

Quote
I thought we were the better team in the first half. We went at them from the kick off and they didn't like it. Any touch on them and they simply fell over.

It was good pressing, neat and tidy passing, and their keeper had a couple of heart in the mouth moments. With someone who could put half chances away, we could have been two or three up before they really threatened us.

Their goal came from leaving Woollery the freedom of Swindon; he was never going to miss. We didn't deserve to be behind at half time.

Wellens must have shot a rocket up their collective arses, because they came out fired up for the second half and we completely lost our shape.

Our attacks became fewer, were weren't winning second ball (and sometimes not even the first). It was as though the fight had been knocked out of us. We still had the odd chance but, apart from that miss from 5yds out from Iacovitti, we didn't look like scoring.

We gifted Doyle his goal with that awful pass from Wheater (why didn't he just lump it anywhere?) and the ginger one was never going to miss.

So, a very disappointing result because, despite Swindon being top of the league, we could have won it had we kept the first half momentum going and not been so sloppy defensively.

"That was the best football I ever watched at Oldham, under Wellens". Granted not a high bar, but nice tribute nonetheless

He's young, of course.  When I was his age I said the best football I ever watched was under Hoddle.  25 or so years later, it still is...

My thoughts on yesterday:
Started off quite slow which is unlike us under Wellens, but like most teams in this division, Oldham weren’t too much of a threat in the final third. Against the better teams in the division we would have likely got punished. We grew into the half and their keepers time wasting came back to bite them thanks to a good finish from Woolery (and a fantastic pass from Doughty which I didn’t appreciate at the time.)

Second-half we looked better but still nowhere near our best. Grant was getting heated and looked like a walking red card. Doyle shouldn’t have had his goal chalked off for offside but it didn’t matter as he scored just minutes later to kill off the game.

If we keep Grant, Doyle and Yates in January, I can’t see us really dropping out the top three. Even in our blip earlier in the season we never dropped out of the top seven. We’re winning games despite not being at our best which, as the cliche goes, is a good sign for a promotion side.

They were good in the first half... Until about 20 yards out. I was never really bothered we'd be in trouble, unless it came from a miscued Benda kick!

Baudry got booked. Does he miss the next game?

don't think so.

I think the cutoff was after 19 games. we are into 10 bookings/37 match period now (2 game suspension)

Among the many things to love about this season, these commentaries are one of the best. Genius.
