Title: Salford v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Thursday, November 14, 2019, 11:33:36
The first league meeting between these two awaits on Saturday. Salford have lost once in their last 6 league games, Swindon have won their last 3 league matches.
Draw written all over it.

1-1 (att: 2,954 with 622 of ours)
Doyle 64th minute

If I extract my finger and attend undoubtedly a Salford banker, if I decide I cannot be arsed, draw or Swindon win!

Karl Robinson going to watch this on saturday, looking at a striker he is keen to sign in the summer.

He loves Doyle by all accounts, wanted to sign him last season

Well, he’s hardly going to get cheaper after this season!

Don’t know why he needs to look at Doyle - he’s 31 and if the bin dipper loves him so much he must know all about him. Plus Doyle wouldn’t even be available until June.

Could understand if it may be Yates

It's easy to forget that, if it were not for Doyle, Yates would be L2's joint top scorer.

What I meant was if we could afford to loan him then so could the Pox.

Although he’s a free agent in the summer I’d imagine he’d still command a hefty signing on fee.

He’s ours.

Must be difficult negotiating a contract when there is a possibility Donohue could get banged up.

Just bought 2 tickets for this. So max 138 left now! New ground for all of us going I suspect. Should be an interesting game, with a distinct  clash of styles, Salford are pretty direct against our passing game.

Expect Zakuani to come in for Donahue, to deal with their aerial threat, with Fryers moved to left back. Grant in for Rose and Doyle for Woolery.

1-1 draw with DJ getting our goal.

From what I can gather their last league game at home was their biggest gate, 3,448 against Scunthorpe. Scunny took 1,231.
Looks like it could be similar to an away day at Cheltenham  :)
Hopefully the result is different  :(

I think we will get a point tomorrow. I would settle for a draw given that Salford are on a good recent run.
I haven’t seen them but a couple of posters have suggested they play a direct style with a big target man. Throw in potentially tricky conditions if it’s wet and/or windy and this will be a tough game. Whilst we have the goal threat from Doyle and Yates, we will have a least one defensive change too, with the Donohue situation (presumably linked to his impending court case, wage demands or both). We have tended to struggle against the high ball landing around our box.
This will be a difficult game tomorrow and a point will probably look to be a good result at the end of the season.

Difficult game to read.... our record against the newly arrived from non league is a bit of a mixed bag, so no guidance there.

Both sides in decent form, so that's not much help.

The weather could be the decisive factor.

Salford lead league 2 with goals from set pieces, 9. According to D3D4 football on twitter.
So the changed defence needs to be awake

You do torture yourself with your tealeaf-reading, old boy. If your ability to extrapolate the future from the past was as impressive as your unwavering faith in your methods, you'd walk the prediction league every year. Perhaps it's time to hang up the Mystic Reg shawl and throw away the giblets.  ;)

There was a very pleasant week of sunshine in about mid September, I remember walking up on the Ridgeway nr Wayland's Smithy.

I'd arranged a walk with a ladyfriend for the following week, she doesn't like rain, grey skies etc, but will do snow and ice; still waiting, it has rained or been grey just about every day since.  :badmood:

The rhyming of lingers and fingers is always a good thing.  :)

I've shunned all things Morrissey since he keeled over during the opening number at The Oasis a few years back.
Convinced to this day that he had no intention of playing that gig.

Apparently Salford enter the field to The Pogues version of Dirty Old Town.
Good stuff.
Most clubs could do with a bit more imagination when it comes to entrance music, with a view to history and sense of place.

Pre match looks like a large football ground nearby in The Bishop Blaize.
Prefer to be in a much smaller one later on.

So, Salford, very hard to find a more working class place back in the day.
Wonder what Marx & Engels would make of it now.
A pity that the Crescent pub where they discussed theory over a pint has now closed.

Having spent a day here the depictions of the locals by JS Lowry look to be accurate.

Hopefully no atrocity exhibition or lazy itis by our lot on the pitch today.
What will the Salford fans make of Football Phil. A weirdo?

Will Grant wipe the floor with Towell today or will we get a towelling.
Could be a battle of the two 31 year old, ginger, Irish strikers.
Must know each other well I guess.
Our man has the better record in English football though.

And a final nod to the mighty Fall.
The Red Ammies should call themselves the City Hobgoblins, which by all accounts wouldn't be far off the mark.

The PFA or more likely Gordon Taylor bought it, some years ago for about £2mill.  Taylor played for Bolton, he'll prob take it home with him when he leaves....

Thinking further on it, they must be able to use their platform to show their away games so would stand to reason iFollow should be able to show our away game there?  If not there should have been a reduction on the season pass?

Good, I didn't realise Orient were not on the iFollow membership, also no problem watching that one.

Gutted I'll not be ticking this one off as a new ground today, making my drive down to France as soon as the game is over.

The iFollow link is always there but only allows you to have audio commentary.

Checking other teams forums they suggest iFollow was not available for matched against them.

I am the same, i have to sign up option on the Salford site eithet. Just login to an existing account.

Will find out soon.

Ah, fair enough.
Trips to Greater Manchester are always good.
Most of the grounds are a pain to get to on public transport, but all part of the challenge.

Hopefully a few of the North West based town fans will be able to make it today.

Interesting urban walk from Crumpsall metro station.

Basic ground. Terrace at both ends, seating along the sides all with a lid on. Tidy enough.

The bog had a note to treat the toilet as you would at home.

61% possession. We can win this if we can fashion some slightly better chances, and stop Rooney getting in. Doughty the player of that half. And I don't think I've ever seen Woolery win so many headers.

Completely agree. Great to see Doughty full of energy and running the game again.

We’ve played well without opening them up. They keep looking for through balls in behind which hasnt worked yet but it’s a sound plan with our high line

Nice touch to bring Caddis on at the end, shows that Wellens is in tune with the fans.

I'm really getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about this season. Hoping we keep this up, and to think some people were asking for Wellens to be sacked not so long ago.

 Sweet.

If you're going to concede last minute goals make sure your 2 ahead and it's the last kick.

We seem to have done quite well so far with not missing games.... and it's always better to have the points, but FGR, Crewe have a game in hand on us and Bradford, Numb and Newport all have 2.

One of life's mysteries is why we always seem to be the last or maybe last but one game to finish. Games KO at 3:00 we often finish at 5:00 with often 10 or more mins added on time, over 2 halves.  >:(

All of those penalty decisions are soft.

Ok, so for our penalty the angle of the replay is not going to the most conclusion.

Great result.

Both the Salford & Cheltenham injury time goals resulted from a defender initially committing themselves rashly when all that was needed was to back off and ensure the attacker went nowhere.

Two instances are not exactly a pattern but naïve defending.

home!  That was good fun.

Thought we controlled a fair period of the game, always felt we could open them up.

Thought the Benda penalty was one, accidental but a foul. The other two pens, no idea. Both looked soft.

Benda made a good save in the second half, which in the end proved crucial.

Whilst they undoubtedly have money behind them they’ve just had a team from 170 miles away play them and have almost half the gate even with £10 tickets. They aren’t exactly the most exciting proposition for a player.

What I like about this team is the work ethic.

The front two may score the goals but they put the hard yards (or should that be metres) in as well.
Woolery looks to be adding that to his game and it's the same for the rest of them as well.

Good to watch and very impressive bearing in mind some of the slacking that we've had to put up with in recent years.

It should be clarified that we've beaten all the others, but not necessarily in league games there's a few like ManU, Everton, Chelsea, Liverpool, only in cup games.

The stat was true last season, further we'd lost to all the others, as of last season, losing to Rochdale recently fucked us over on that.

It was true when we beat Fleetwood a few years ago.  I posted about it then ( I can't be arsed to find the post). A damn fine achievement.  If Bradford beat Salford they'll join us in the 91 club (maybe 90 for this year).

From what I understand wages are a maximum of 50% of turnover - which is why Bradford will struggle to recall Doyle on his full wages.

55% in L2 and 60% in L1. But bear in mind that Bradford have an average crowd of almost double ours.

True to an extent but not one of their players would get into our 1st XI so they clearly aren’t as attractive to the higher quality players as people thought. An older player looking for a pay day will probably be interested but to a more ambitious player playing in front of 1000 home fans probably isn’t that appealing.

I thought Salford were pretty poor, not good at passing, lots of hoofball and they couldnt cope with Woolerys pace at the back. Rooney looks poor and Jervis a real donkey, as you say not one of that team would be near our starting line up.

A few comments from the Salford forum, TBF there are only a few comments on there!

Quote
I have seen much better referees than this character today.  I also understand that an unfortunate slip led to their equaliser and the penalty decision seemed harsh.  Yes I also feel their 3rd was just unlucky that we couldn;t clear it but....

Can't understand why we can't buy a win at home while away we play attractive passing football

these are better players than we have ever had but the entertainment factor is just not there

I really don't think we can complain too much about our 2-3 defeat as Swindon looked the more composed side of the two with their acurate slick passing and aerial dominance frustrating us throughout large parts of the afternoon. Adam Rooney gave us the perfect start with a successful penalty kick only for Swindon to capitalise on our hesitancy at the back with an equaliser just minutes later. I really can't remember us making any serious threat on the visitors goal for the remainder of the half as they appeared to grow in confidence. An encouraging start to the second half soon evaporated as we reverted back to hoofing the ball forwards, playing too many over hit passes and failing to take any advantage of any number of free kicks into the Swindon 18 yard box. A spell of some pressure came and went without any reward and while the visitors looked less threatening than they did in the first half two quick breaks saw them take the lead from the penalty spot after Liam Hogan - I think it was - was adjudged to have handled a cross in the area followed by the killer third after Chris Neal had made a double save only for it to be smashed in from point blank range. It was no more than the visitors deserved although Adam Rooney still found time to net a second penalty conversion on the stroke of full time after Brandon Asante had been adjudged to have been brought down after he had missed a great opportunity just two minutes earlier by firing wide when well placed. No complaints then about the result as the better team definitely won but I felt we didn't do ourselves any favours in the way we lumped the ball high and wide too many times and didn't win enough one on one battles where it mattered.

I’m happy to be a league 2 team, but I don’t see any evidence that we’re learning anything. Backing off all the time and this awful hoofball. I’d rather lose trying to play football than hoofing the ball

It was very dispiriting today to see another awful, pedestrian performance full of the long ball garbage.

currently the football is boring the pants off me.

They are a good team (Swindon). No doubt about it. They ran the midfield.

Swindon are clearly a very good side but I thought we could have approached the game much better

Swindon were faster, sharper and more creative. They could always find an unmarked man in acres of space. BUT, apart from Doughty, our players should be as good as theirs.

Their fans were excellent, best this season.

We had far too many players yesterday standing and watching, maybe in awe, at the Swindon players. That’s not about being outclassed, it’s about players just not doing their jobs.

55% in L2 and 60% in L1. But bear in mind that Bradford have an average crowd of almost double ours.
The other point to bear in mind is that they are already maxed out to the 55% wage limit - the fact their turnover is bigger than ours means nothing as they have already spent it.

They need to increase turnover to recall Doyle. That could be by winning their 2 FA Cup games and getting a plum 3rd round tie or their owner gifting the club the money - loaning money doesn’t count towards turnover. As the rules for an owner gifting money is, I think £1.81 to the pound lent, then the approximate cost of a returning Doyle would be roughly writing off £130,000 of the owner’s money.

By all accounts we are already paying the bulk of his wages so maybe paying them fully plus a nominal fee would secure him - plus us offering him a 2.5 year contract.

Post by: Peter Venkman on Sunday, November 17, 2019, 13:50:06
I hear that a fee as low as £50k to £100k has been mentioned to sign him but it means us covering his whole wage, with some transfer wangling or Clems money coming in then that could in theory cover that.

Let’s stay under the radar, accumulating points while we do so.
Excellent result on Saturday - let’s hope we can get two more this week and continue to build the momentum.

Re Bradford - the other way they can free up extra budget is to ship out any deadwood they have in their squad (if they can) - presumably the same challenge we have with Diagoraga and McGlashan. But they have to weigh it up - would Doyle fit their style, and with 3 automatic promotion  slots does he help them more by damaging other teams as he scores for us.

This may be controversial, but if we can only afford one, Yates is the player I hope we can sign permanently - he is critical to our style of play, has the versatility to play up front or deeper, if Doyle has an injury or lean spell can score goals, plus he would fit the LP model of having longer term resale value (unlike Doyle and Grant who are 31 and 32 respectively.

Looking at the league two fixtures, if you had to pick one to give extra coverage too it probably would've been that one as both teams are around the top 7.

Yeah I fear you are right, its a little too late for the "under the radar" stuff tbh.

But I do hope they don't praise us and our style too much as it does make other teams more aware of us and how to counter our style, something the poor teams try to do but don't succeed, teams like Crawley, orient and Salford all tried but they had little quality so couldn't succeed in stopping us.

We struggle against the bigger more physical sides like Newport, Plymouth, Colchester and Bradford who close the play and kick and get at teams, much as Lincoln did so well for 2 seasons.

The only team we have played that had the better of the play against us was really Crewe.

The only other team we haven't played yet that play a passing style of football is FGR and they have never beat Swindon in a league game with Swindon winning 3 of the 4 matches played.

I concur.  Yates is a worker, scores a few goals ad can get better.

Plus Power has shown time and time again that he is prepared to fork out money for a player he sees as a good long term investment.

Let’s stay under the radar, accumulating points while we do so.
Excellent result on Saturday - let’s hope we can get two more this week and continue to build the momentum.
Yates played probably his best game for us on Saturday, he was all over the pitch winning tackles and scoring a goal, he was excellent.

His work rate can never be faulted but so often in games he falls over his own feet when in great positions or air shots with the goal in front of him.

He is very close to being a very good player but its like he has a rush of blood to the head when he gets in front of goal at times, if he managed to hit the ball cleanly then he would have more goals than Doyle.

His finishing does remind me a lot of Anderson last season, its like he panics and totally misses his shot, often when under no pressure, that hopefully will improve and if it does he will be a brilliant signing.

He has done well to have scored 8 goals so far and fair play to him, thats a good amount, but it could have been double that with a little more composure in front of goal, something Doyle has bags of, although saying that Doyle did miss a couple himself on Saturday.

I know that it's Doyle getting all the credit at the moment but as a squad, we are really starting to form solid partnerships all over the field. At the back Fryers and Baudry have formed a good CB pairing, Hunt at RB is often involved in a lot of good work down the right. Lydon, Doughty and Grant are probably the best 3 midfield partnership in this league when on form and of course up from Yates and Doyle are a dream. He doesn't contribute goals but Kayne Woolery appears to have really found some form and his pace and direct running causes all kinds of problems. At the moment, there isn't really a weak link in the side. Confidence is oozing through the team, we are playing with a swagger, moving the ball quickly and creating lots of chance.

Long may it last!

Talking of Doyle (as we often do) is he the first Town striker ever to score in 6 consecutive matches for Swindon?

I don't remember there being another but I don't think Parkin, Paynter, Mayes, Rowland or Austin ever managed that IIRC.

And that’s when we’ve lost Conroy, Andersen and Isgrove to long term injuries! Tbh, I thought we’d struggle with those 3 out. We actually seem to be getting better!

Bobby Barnes did it, though he wasn't a striker as such.

Harry Morris did an 8 and a 9

Bobby Barnes did play an AMC game in the middle of that so yes consecutive league games he did but not consecutive games (which obviously wasn't what I stated).

Harold Fleming did 6 in a row 3 times but each included a cup game.

If you're looking at league games which we are, then you ignore FL trophy games.  If you're looking at FL trophy games then you ignore league games.

Harry Morris didn't play any FL trophy games.

I watched the Wellen's post match interview and though he came across really well. I like the piece at the end where he stated that it feels like the fans have got their club back.

Possibly controversial in Powers's eyes but the passion and belief shown on the players faces when Yates scored our 3rd and the  feeling amongst the fans backs up this statement.

But it's league games we're interested in.  We played an FL trophy game in the week, it wasn't taken seriously, therefore there's no way it should be included in any comparisons.  However you might want to do something on FL trophy games, llike who has scored most goals in it, who's scored in most consecutive FL trophy games etc.

I meant two more wins this week - tomorrow in the FA cup and Saturday.

Yes but it is still a "first team" fixture, like it or not, taken seriously or not it is still a 1st team game and has to be counted as such.

Something else has not been mentioned (at least I haven't seen it mentioned) Saturday was the first time since March 2016 that we have won 4 consecutive league matches.

And also the first time that Richie Wellens has ever been in charge of a team to have won 4 consecutive league matches in his managerial career.

tbf, not in any meaningful sense. Like for example, having many actual 1st team players playing in it

Bristol Rovers TBF fielded almost a whole team with a lot of first team appearances and experience between them, because we chose not to does not invalidate it being a 1st team fixture even if we don't like to think of it as such.

Not wishing to enter the debate thats gone on hunfdreds of times in the past on here we should be allowed to field as many changes as we want without fear of fines etc.

As it is, its still a 1st team fixture whether we as fans or a club like it or not.

No if you actually read what I wrote I stated 4 consecutive league matches, please don't change what I wrote for your own argument when I never wrote that.

It really is a bad habit of yours to twist posts to suit your own arguments.

You argued that FL trophy games were first team fixtures, therefore couldn't be ignored. Fair enough if you append "league" games, but my line that when we're talking about Doyle scoring in 6 consecutve league games, then Bobby Barnes matched that..... you suggested in some way because of an EFL game he didn't.

It would have been quite easy to say.... yes Doyle has matched Barnes.

I'd arranged a walk with a ladyfriend for the following week, she doesn't like rain, grey skies etc, but will do snow and ice; still waiting, it has rained or been grey just about every day since.  :badmood:

Or perhaps she has just read this thread?

You directly quoted me as saying we have won 4 LEAGUE games in a row then you changed it to include a cup game, again changing the rules as you go.

The ball in served into your court.....

You can't directly quote and then change the whole point of the original post, as you often do.

The serve is a match winner, even though you try to argue with the umpire.... he over rules you....again and the win is confirmed.

Shame he can't play tomorrow TBH, I think we would easily beat Numb if he did play.

The change in system will not be to our advantage as we don't have a like for like replacement for Doyle who leads the line so well and his goal poaching instinct is amazing.

Agree to an extent but the change of system didn’t really stop us in the first match, we really did completely dominate them at their place. We just need to finish our chances this time.

I think we will probably push Woolery up front again or keep him wide right and play DJ as wide man more on the left.

So a similar line up to the away game last week but possibly without Donohue and Iandolo playing instead, as long as Rose is fit enough as he only played 2 mins at the weekend after going off vs Rovers.

Yates pushed up front and DJ wide left which suits him more than wide right but still being flexible so he can swap to the right if needed.

I think it’ll be the same bar Donohue as you say.
One thing that seems to have been glossed over is Woolery was in the league 2 team of the week and seems to be finally starting up progress. He was involved in 2 of our goals on Saturday and should have been a third if Doyle hadn’t missed a sitter, just needs to start finishing more chances. I think it’ll be a front 3 or one depending on if you see Woolery & DJ as forwards or Yates as a lone striker in this formation.

Woolery was excellent on Saturday he has really grabbed the chance since Isgrove got injured, as ou say his finishing is poor but his crossing is improving, the set up for Doyle on Saturday was very unselfish and should have resulted in a goal.

Hes not quite reached the level of improvement that Naderson has but hes getting better each game and he scares the shit out of slow lumbering defenders, like Salfords werem you could see them panic when he got close to the ball.

Early season Woolery....yes, not so much lately TBH, he has improved a lot in the last 3 or 4 week. Still not quite there yet though, Doyle actually had one shot that bothered the cars outside, which is unusual for him!

Agree Doyle will be a big miss,  but regarding the system and formation changes this can work to our advantage as the Numb would have no idea how we intend to play whereas in the league  with a full squad we are there to be 'spied'  on weekly and systems worked out.

Woolery was my man of the match, his work ethic is fantastic, could have been easy for him to get the hump at not being a regular but he's been excellent recently.  If he was a finisher he'd be worth a few million.

If he was a finisher he'd be worth a few million.
Thats the clincher, if he could finish he would be playing a lot higher with his work rate and speed, he has the control too 95% of the time but his final ball is often poor, its improving but he really needs to work on cleaner striking of the ball in front of goal.

If he can learn that then he will be a very good player, hes improving but does still need some work in training. He has so many good attributes but he needs to add finishing or even better crossing to that to go further.

Bolton and Wigan saw something in him but couldn't quite bring it out.

A good striking coach should work with him, he could even learn some things from Doyle with his experience.

Cannot fault his attitude though no matter what, he has done well despite what a lot of fans thought or think of him.

With his pace he is always going to be pushed wide so if he can learn to cut inside and shoot consistantly, maybe even playing him on the left wing as we used to play the left footed Ritchie on the right wing so he could cut inside onto his stronger foot, the inverted winger, that could work too.

I am not entirely sure that Wellens sees him as an out and out striker though, his versatility could work against him being a regular.
