Strangely enough, I don’t really mind if we do lose. Bigger fish to fry this season - got to, just got to, get out of this league this season.

No Isgrove, Anderson, 2 yet to be announced loanees not playing - we’ll probably trounce ‘em!

Free hit Saturday.

Whilst a good cup run is good financially and for motivation etc the league is 100% the precedent. So if we lost on Saturday it wouldn't be the end of the world.

That said, I think it'll be a 1-1 draw which is probably the worst possible result for both sides.

Think we'll win.  Certainly hope so.  A bit of success in a cup will help rather than hinder our promotion chances.

2-1

Seconded, that's where I go and it's good for the town centre as well.

Can street park around whaddon but wouldn't recommend it, played football on whaddon Rec many times and seen plenty of damaged and even burnt out cars. It's one of the craphole bits of Cheltenham.

1-7

They score first (Ian OG after an almighty communication fuck up with Benda).
Iandolo hattrick, Ben Purkiss brace.
Paul Benson & Jamie Sendles-White add to the scoring, to send Great Western Reds into raptures.
A lone red and white "Bring back JSW" tea towel, succumbs to the late autumn winds.

If as expected Doyle and Grant are the 2 loanees that miss out, then would like to see Iandolo given a chance at wide left of a 4 in midfield with DJ on the other wing and Yates/Woolery up top. Normal back 4.

2-1 win with Woolery and Yates scoring.

I think we will get a narrow win tomorrow - I assume they may also have a couple of changes (if they have any loanees who are not allowed to play).
Like others I am slightly drawn to the argument that a cup run means more games (possible injuries etc) and could impede progress in the league, but the other side is the extra revenue could be used to boost the squad in January, or make a loanee permanent. with promotion as our main target, the ideal scenario is a win tomorrow, a straightforward win in round 2 and a money spinner against a big premier league team in round 3 (Man U, Arsenal or Spurs away - assuming biggest grounds = most revenue), losing that game narrowly. We bank the profits and only have one L2 game to rearrange.

Certainly about time for a cup run. Finances hugely important especially with such a heavy squad, £36k for winning tomorrow and £54k for a second round win - all before a potential R3 money-spinner. It's not just the cash, but the interest a R3 big tie could generate and hopefully attracting a few more fans for a promotion push.

I wonder if Benda might be one to mis out?  If by the 3rd round Swans have picked a up a keeper injury they'll prob want him back.

:hmmm:    Just doing FA cup here.

 A proper big one.

I can think of Leicester and Fulham as recentish interesting trips..... apart form that I might be tempted by the infamous Newcastle away.  Which is a long time ago, surely got to be something since?

I have seen Town in the FA Cup at Villa Park in front of over 50,000, with  ahuge contingenent of Town fans filling the Holte End, only it wasn't against Villa.

Answering my own question, did a decent job of forgetting Evertion away.... another piece of infamy... Culverhouse sent off after a minute, the fastest red card in FA Cup history.

Good memories, also, of our trip to Maine Road.  I've just looked it up, and can see now that even that was in Jan 2002...so nearly 18 years ago!  Feeling very old now.  Feels like yesterday (even though it clearly wasn't.)

I now remember the Everton game, didn't go it was a Sunday, so my lad was doing an indoor football tournamnet in Faringdon.... listened to WS for about the first 2 mins, then thought fuck that and concentrated on the lads.

Were Man City top flight back then?  The last  time we won at a top flight side away was probably at Norwich in a replay under Macari, before that Newcastle game.

That Newcastle game was a great day out - despite the result. Persil were doing train tickets for vouchers off their packaging. Absolutely legless before we even arrived at Newcastle. Yates Wine Lodge followed by a few in The Strawberry and we were good to go!

It was one of those games.... we'd won at top flight Norwich and had a strong Macari cup fighting side.  So Town travelled in numbers, I was on the football special which broke down around about n of Gloucester.  Being pre privatisation, BR found a couple of class 47's and double headed us up Newcastle, arriving about 15 minutes late.

It was a first sighting of Gazza in the flesh, and you could see staright way he was quality, the way he just brushed aside Stigger and Kammy, not easy.

The subsequent betting scandal just cemented it into legend.  Newcastle got brushed aside by Wimbledon in the next round, on that pitch you could see why.

By the time we got into the ground it was about 30 mins in and the score was still 0-0.
All downhill after that.

Mirandinha, a Brazilian novelty at the time, featured for them.
Went on to manage over 20 clubs at an average of about 1 every year from '96 onwards.

Pre match getting the drowning of the sorrows out of the way first in The Moon Under Water.
Unusually there doesn't appear to be a festival of some sort going on.
The Beer Festival was last week. A pity.

The list of notable Cheltonians is impressive.
We have XTC, they have Gustav Holst.
Sadly, an Ode to Death is unlikely to make it onto the playlist at the Jonny Rocks.

Just realised that some of us will get to remember the fallen on three separate occasions.
Anyone who doesn't go to football will only get to do it once.
At the referee's whistle I'll be sparing a thought for Duncan Boyes.
A local lad who won the VC at 17 and was gone at 22.
Didn't die in the line of duty but a sad tale nonetheless.
Life is cheap, but the medal certainly isn't.

So, here we are again.
Wellens has yet to win a cup game.
Just play the strongest available team today and anyone who doesn't pull their finger out gets to go through the motions in midweek.

Forgot the brolly but the sun is shining at the moment.
We can do this today.

I too was on that train ...within 5 minutes of arriving at St James' Park and fighting our way through the throngs to get a glimpse of the pitch, we'd gone a goal down. Feels like yesterday and at the same time a life time ago - "Paul Gascoigne, the blossoming Newcastle youngster"...and the state of that pitch... ???

Wellens:
- We're cursed here! We were very very good today
- Honestly don't think we switched off. The lad's shanked it, it's ricocheted in, it's the only way they were going to score today
- Should've been two goals up at h-t: Kaiyne should be running more directly on goal, then Jerry's missed the easiest chance of the game with a header off the bar
- We were so dominant cos we're a good team. We played really well, some very good performances out there.
- If I have Doyle, Isgrove and Anderson, think of the subs I can make. Take nothing away from this side, that's very encouraging
- Donohue's contract ends tomorrow, so we'll obviously be trying to do something there. He's played for Mansfield, so unless they want him unemployed there, I'd say we're ten lengths clear in getting him signed.

The Crewe game sounds fun. Two officials injured, restarted with a linesman reffing and one assistant ref. About to be added time, and both teams are being absolutely brutal to the new ref. Wonder who will decide how many added minutes...

Anyway, we’re in the hat on Monday for the first time in a long time. So 330 minutes away from giant killing again. Generating some £££ for Mr. Power to a) strengthen the squad b) defer spending blaming need to reduce debt c) stashing the cash in his personal account citing director dividends or interest on loans. Delete any to suit your story.

We were really good. Patient, methodical and controlled the game until the bloody up and under that got us.

They really should have scored at the death too which is probably why I'm not too disappointed. Had he conceded two after Yates' goal it would have been beyond robbery

Thinking back this is where RW was slightly lacking in game management. In the same situation the older experienced managers would have killed the game by bringing on a sub. wasting a bit of time and taken the heat out of the game. Not too worried as the performance sounded good which matters more.

There was a player stripped off ready to come on when they scored...

Numb were beyond lucky today, Doughty couldn't buy a foul, the lino by the Town fans was useless, Woolery lacked an end product as always, Rose battled well, DJ was fucked by 80mins, Benda was a little shakey and needs to work on his communication.

A totally dominant performance, deserved to win and gives me confidence that if Doyle and Grant are recalled in January, we can still push for automatic promotion. Rose , Lyden and Doughty ran the show and the back 4 were very impressive in playing out., particularly Baudry and Fryers who must be the best technically centre back pairing in L2. Doughty was back to his best and is definitely suited to playing ahead of 2 holding midfielders. DJ looked dangerous and Woolery was showed plenty of endeavour, some excellent runs with just the end product lacking. Special mention to Yates, tremendous attitude and workrate and kept persevering after missing a couple of gilt edged chances. Oh and the away support was fantastic.

Oh he huffs and puffs away, I can't fault that, but there is *zero* end product, whether he drags a decent chance wide of the near post, or is indecisive and loses the ball, or a poor pass. I'd love him to come good, but there's just something missing.

I remember a Lingy getting a winner in the last minute in a midweek game v Oldham, but looking back it wasn't a replay just played on a Monday night. So could it go as far back as winning at Carrow Road under Macari....

Looking further back the season after Norwich we beat Pompey at the CG having drawn there in 88/89, then in 90/91 we beat Orient having drawn at Brisbane Road.... only defeats since and some horrible ones in amongst those  :(

No Doyle, Grant, Isgrove, Anderson, nailed on pen ignored, goal disallowed and we battered them second half. And the minute or so after we scored was the kind of pure joy you can only experience at football. Taking a lot of positives from that.

I expect a lot of us feared the worst with those 4 missing. Very reassuring there is life after Doyle et al!

Wellens is off to watch BRovers v Bromley today. Can’t think it’s anything to do with Tuesday’s Winky Wanky Cup game. Is Bennett still on his radar? Is there a possible Doyle replacement on view? I hope he’s not looking at Tom Nichols.

At least with those 4 not in the squad yesterday Wellens can, legitimately, field a weak side against BRovers.

To be fair, in the last minute of a cup game where they’re chucking all the bodies forward, anything can happen with a lucky bounce and a bit of chaos. Not sure why Woolery seems to be coming from deep right back position when he should have been under and contesting that ball forward from the kick off, rather than arriving late to it.

Still can’t believe we didn’t win that. Special mention to Baudry. He was immense yesterday (when he wasn’t slipping over in the first half).

One thing that yesterday and early season did show is that we play much better football and retain possession easier with one up front (as we have the extra centre mid) but are less dangerous up front. Just need to find a Balance between the 2 systems and we should be right up there at the end of the season. Very useful that we can play both ways and I would class that as having a plan B rather than the plan b being to hoof it up to a target man as some have suggested in the past.

Looking at the highlights and that was a really tentative effort from Woolery in the first half.
Keeper saved it but it wasn't on target.

Maybe a different outcome if Doyle had been running through in that situation.

Agree with this. Always thought that although Doyle has scored a bundle of goals that we can clearly ill afford to lose, his partnership with Yates is not a natural one and does mean we sacrifice Doughty being able to play further forward with his extra creativity. A nice problem to have though.

Thing is one up front is fine as long as you're in the game, so you can play counter attack, problem comes if you go behind or like at home the opposition banks up behind the ball. It's then that you need options

This - the joy after the goal was amazing, and of course then brought down to earth.  But a few hours to reflect and yes, there are many many positives to take out of yesterday.  A bit disappointed I wont be able to make the replay cos if we carry on like that we will batter them. But then again football doesn't work like that, but we can hope... even if it is the hope that kills you.

Indeed, as per yesterdays chat, we haven't won a replay for near on 30 years losing 8 in that time, so the weight of history very much against and it is Numb, so probably best not to think too much about prevailing, that way you don't get disappointed.

Given that pretty much (I haven't checked but I'll lay odds) none of our team or theirs or our management or theirs were involved in any of those replays over the last 30 years, that's all irrelevant though, other than as a superstition.

Of course it is....  ::)

What it means is that often in cup football we're not very good in recent years. Wellens has yet to win a cup game of any sort as a manager, he's also had 4 shots at Numb and yet to win, this tells me that it will be a very difficult game, of course it's possible to win, but not something that should be taken as a given.

It would be more logical to take a look at the stats of every player in both teams, see how many cup games or replays they have each played and work out the probability of a win from there.....

Indeed. Or even look at the performance of 4th tier teams in cup replays over the past decade, that might at least give an idea of a likelihood of outcome. But 8 matches spread over 30 years, while an interesting piece of trivia, and it is interesting from that point of view, gives no useful indication of how this replay is likely to go.

We have played them 11 times since 2002. Anybody that knows anything about statistics will tell you that that is FAR too small sample to present anything meaningful.

That - and we have generally been bad to average over the last few years, which will obviously influence results (no shit sherlock).

So, in summary - the stats don't tell us anything about how the next game will go - nada.

*Edit - Actually, that's not strictly true. What we may be able to take from the data is that current form is likely to have a bearing on results - who'da thunk it?

Bit harsh. Personally I find the historical trivia mildly interesting, it gives a sense of perspective on where we have been as a club, it's the attempt to pass it off as significant for the current team's likely performance that I find irritating, because it's clearly not true

I've been saying all season we control games better when we play 433 but yes the goal threat is lacking, our worst and best performances this season have been playing 442. Now that we have DJ we have another option out wide as he is a threat, once Isgrove and Keshi are back it really is a quandry how we setup. The added complication is that Doughty plays much better in a 433 than any other formation as he can play with a little bit more freedom than in a deep two, and running onto the ball which he can't in a 4231. With all players fit I'd play 433 and Keshi Doyle Isgrove being the front three, but I'd also think we should try playing Doyle Yates Isgrove with Yates slightly behind the other two and told to chase lost causes and run the defenders down.

It's usually difficult to find a draw in R2 that gets the juices going (if we get there).

Since the turn of the century we've made it through to R2 11 times, and here's a list of opponents.

Woking
Stevenage
ColU
Crawley
Wrexham
FGR
Morecambe
Notts C
Oxford
Hereford
Gateshead

More or less all who were at the time non league, or are currently non league or have had lenghty spells in non league.

We managed to beat 6 of the 11.

Replay ticket prices slashed to £10 adult

Sweet.

Made my mind to go up to Salford on Saturday too - that's only £10 for a league game!

Just noticed (and realised) that Bradford and Shrewsbury have a reply against each other as well

So.. when we beat numb it would  mean either Doyle or Grant could be available for the next round?  Ideally need Shrewsbury to win as there would be no reason for Doyle not play for us in next round.

You're entering into we mode again, as if you represent some sort of faction, rather than just your individual viewpoint.

Recently your individual viewpoint was to try and get posters to join yourself in using the ignore facility as regards my posts... fine I've no problem with that, but then do find it a bit strange that you can pass comment on the content of stuff you're not reading.

The £20 a ticket for the first game at Cheltenham seemed a bit like taking advantage of our following for these games.

We took about a 3rd of the total attendance with 1200 out of 3.5K but you feel if Cheltenham were playing a Northern League Two they would have dropped prices.

In the FA Cup, each side takes 40% of the gate receipts, with the remaining 20% going into the prize money pot. Believe both teams also have a say on the ticket price, from memory.
