Title: Swindon v Plymouth pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Thursday, October 10, 2019, 09:48:58
This is the important one. Our home record is not very good, when we lose it seems to be by a few goals too. We need to address this, starting Saturday. Should be a good atmosphere, I'm kind of looking forward to it  :)

Swindon 0-2 Plymouth
Att: 9,534 (2,500 away)

The good news is that the same overall result between 2 teams playing consecutive games against each other rarely happens. Draw.

Play like we did on Tuesday and we will get spanked, play like we did early season and we will easily beat them, likely outcome a draw.

We are on a poor run after out excellent start and that run will end soon, I am sure.

I know a few Plymuff fans that really hate us, the older ones of my age who have not forgiven Swindon fans for the murder of Plymouth fan Mark Smith in November 1987 in Gladstone Street after the draw against them at the CG.

2-1 defeat with Doyle scoring in front of 8,755 with 2,425 Muffers there.

Feels like a big game - at some stage we need to have a statement performance against one of the other big clubs in this league.

Unfortunately, I don't think it'll happen this weekend. Score draw, 8820 with 2410 pasty munchers.

In my role doing the Social Media stuff for "Trust STFC", we were contacted by a Plymouth Argyle forum called PASOTI, looking for someone to give the Swindon Town fans view ahead of Saturday's fixture. I responded to the eight questions and my responses are available on the following link:

Note - I penned these responses before Tuesday night's game (which I didn't attend), but it feels like that result in the nothing cup has drained away a fair bit of enthusiasm? A positive performance/result needed on Saturday. COYR!

Shame we've had a bit of a dip in form as otherwise it could've been a bumper crowd.

I predict our slump will be ongoing while we settle with all the injurie. Ryan Lowe's Bury were one of the best teams I saw at the CG last season but we did a number on them away. Hoping for an early peice of luck to get us ahead and settle the nerves a bit but predicting a defeat.

Bury did a number on us last season, TBF we were under Brown and not in a good run of form.

They played with 2 speedy wingers, thats something tried to do on Tuesday too, I do remember Bury players dropping like flies timewasting, not sure if that was a Bury thing or a Lowe thing?

Lowe teams do like to pass the ball around a bit.

Like you say, its a shame we couldn't have grabbed a point at Bradford and won on Tuesday then there would have been nearer 10k than 8k or 9k at most.

Should be a good atmosphere tomorrow.
A jolly convoy of green clad Paul Whitehouse lookalikes heading up the motorway. Possibly not.
Looks as if they are going to get wet.

Speaking of which I remember a particularly turgid 1-1 on new years day in 1991.
On the bank and it chucked it down for the whole game.

Also remember the “2-0 and you fucked it up” game in 2003.
Now always cringe whenever that song gets an airing.
LMC first played against us nearly 17 years ago.

Need to rediscover the early season form somehow.
Hopefully confidence will be restored tomorrow.

There's been some good and memorable games v Argyle down the years....  one of my faves was at Home Park the week after we won the league cup.  The only time I can recall 2 football specials departing from the station, no segregation back then, so Town fans just waded into the Devonport End, which was a decent size terrace. The locals weren't too happy about it and so it got a bit mental.

Of course we then managed to lose, to 2 goals scored by a Mike Bickle, a Janner who had just moved from playing for St Austell part time while working as a milk man.

No mention of Curran being injured too? he went off early on Tueday altho he did look quite out of his depth for the time he was on the pitch.

No recognised left footed defender if Fryers and Iandolo are out, altho Rose has filled in there this season at times. Most of 'Muffs attacking threat came down that side on Tuesday, they could have a field day.

Nothing on Curran on the Twitter quotes, just "It'll be 70% different players from Tuesday - it was not good enough on Tuesday."

Makes you wonder how many players we actually have!

Questions should be asked about fitness and training for so many injuries and the pitches haven’t even cut up yet.

We need to start getting results.

Power for me is in the last chance saloon. If we don’t get up this season then I fear we are stuck in this division

Difficult one to predict today - not least because we have no idea how we will line up due to injury list.
The defensive injuries are disruptive, both in terms of organisation at the back, and as RW highlighted, in our build up playing out from the back.
We need at least a point from today to avoid negativity growing (some on here are always at “peak negativity” - I exclude them) and to keep us in touch with the top 3.
I think it may be a score draw, 1-1 or 2-2.

A pre match view by the TEFs own Constanza.

http://argyle.life/matches/opposition-view-swindon-vs-plymouth-argyle-10-19/

Quote
Plymouth Argyle prepare to face Swindon Town for the second time in a week on Saturday afternoon. Ahead of the game, we spoke to Swindon fan Richard from the Loathed Strangers Podcast to get a perspective on the game from the County Ground.
First of all, how did you get into supporting Swindon?

Although I’m a full blown Moonraker, I’m not a Swindonian so it was my dad who inflicted Swindon Town on me from an early age.

I’ve been lost to football as long as I can remember and was 7 years old when I went to my first Town game which I still think that is at least two years later than I would have liked.

Having spent a chunk of my childhood outside Wiltshire, my allegiance to Swindon Town always seemed to raise eyebrows and looks of sympathy. Saying that, it wasn’t much different in West Wiltshire either.

My earliest memories of Swindon Town are unapologetically romantic. The smells of cigarette/cigar/pipe smoke, the unrelenting swearing in thick Wiltshire accents, the sound of seats clacking and the impressive yet intimidating sight of our glorious floodlights.

Since my first game I’ve watched Swindon play in the top four tiers which I guess is something. The majority of the cool stuff occurred when I was too young to appreciate it. Ain’t it always the way?
Are there any Swindon players in particular we should be looking out for this weekend?

It really depends. We’ve got a few players who can trouble any side in League Two on their day but to answer your question, Lloyd Isgrove.

He is our ‘flair’ player and had it not been for injuries he would be comfortably playing above this division but he has struggled to make the difference in recent weeks.

He’s tricky and an absolute nuisance when the elements are right which has been the case for most of his Town appearances.
What have you made of the Robins’ start to the season?

Plymouth visit Swindon at a very good time as the last few weeks have *not* gone to plan.

Up until mid-September we looked really good. Only one league loss courtesy of a horrific bit of officiating against Northampton (and it really was) and the players were oozing confidence.

Then the current struggle. Three losses in four L2 games.

The accusation made by a reasonable number of Town fans is that we’ve yet to beat a decent side. I maintain my belief that this is a little unfair but while we’re losing to teams like Newport and Bradford, who people expect to be ‘up there’, then it becomes harder to argue.

Town need a good result but the County Ground can be an anxious place when the going isn’t good, and the fact that there will be a lot of away fans mean that I don’t expect a change in Swindon’s fortunes this weekend.

Beyond happy to be proved wrong. We have the XI to maintain a promotion push, absolutely we do. I do wonder whether we the squad though. Town have been experiencing injuries during pretty much every game in recent weeks.
Do you think Argyle’s 3-0 win in the EFL Trophy in midweek will have any impact on this game?

No. Richie Wellens has made it quite clear that he thinks the EFL Trophy is nonsense and an unwanted distraction so it was no surprise to see Town get a walloping in midweek.
What sort of tactical style do you expect to set up with on Saturday?

4-4-2 if Wellens decides to go with Yates and Doyle up front. Otherwise he might go for a 4-2-3-1 formation. When Town are good, they are blistering on the counter-attack. Haven’t seen it much recently but it’s genuinely impressive when it’s working.
And are there any real weak links in the side you’re worried about?

Depth. As mentioned, we have the XI but we don’t have the strongest bench.

Both of our first choice CBs (Conroy and Baudry) have been injured recently. We finished a recent game with two players at centre-back playing out of position and it was noticeable despite plenty of effort.
What first comes to mind when you think of Plymouth Argyle?

I used to live in Plymouth so watched Argyle quite a bit. I think of players like Ebanks-Blake, Buzsaky, Fallon (swoon), Hayles, Norris, Timar, Halmosi, Connolly, Djordjic …and a story that ends with the immortal line ‘Don’t you know who I am? I’m Tony Capaldi!’
Which Argyle player, if any, would you like to sign?

Danny Mayor. Heaven knows, we’ve tried.

Also, Klaidi Lolos has a great name so I’d like to sign him too please. Thanks.
Do you have any predictions for League Two in general this year?

Swindon Town will avoid relegation. You heard it here first. NOTHING CAN GO WRONG NOW!
And finally, what is your prediction for the game itself?

Generally, I’m more of a positive fan but we are in a bit of a funk at the moment and in my experience the wrath of the football gods isn’t over just yet, so I’m going for Swindon Town 1-2 Plymouth Argyle (Argyle go 2-0 up and Town pull one back late on).

The UK ban for watching 3pm Saturday KO's only applies when the Premier League is playing.

Last season there were 3 games on "International weekends" that were available to UK watchers, much as Tesday and Wednesday games are.

Unless they have changed the rules since last season, which is why Plymouth are able to stream the game live at their club today.

The referee for Saturday's game is Robert Lewis who was last in charge of an Argyle game in December last season for the 3-3 draw against Bradford City at Home Park. So far this season he has issued 38 yellow cards and three reds in nine games.
He will assisted by Kevin Morris and Matthew Lee while the fourth official is Bhupind Gill.

He was rated highly at Chesterfield and won player of the season, Pompey recon he was good but he wanted a move back nearer the North West which was why he left them.

Basically though I have no idea!

Well hopefully he will put in a good shift, but just found a bit more. Month by month so if needs be not a massive investment. Got a lot to prove to keep the job though so hopefully it shows.

No sentiment then in terms of not playing LMc against his former club.

Hope the new keeper has the same impact as Wes when he came in.

I just hope Benda looks better than he did on Tuesday.

Don't expect him to come in and command his area, thats not his game, his kicking seems a bit ponderous at times too.

It may have been just a bad game for him, fingers crossed.

Disappointed for LMc as I think he may have raised his game against a club that still see him as a hero (despite everything off the pitch).

From the Mansfield forum...

Quote
every Chesterfield fan and Pompey fan I know rated him and said he is far too good to even be in League 2.

Punchy individual hiding behind football
He will get another club and probably do ok
Shame as he could have been a very good player for us.
Onwards and... hopefully upwards from now on and big wages saved as well

Not entirely convinced that Grant and Lyden should be played as a defensive midfield pairing at home.

I would imagine that Anderson will play at the front of the midfield 3 with Isgrove being given licence to roam, a free role behind the front 2, a flexible 442 but with Isgrove playing down which side he gets the best results from.

Well that goes to show what a farce the friendly cup is.

Still scrapy, and we seem to have lost our pattern of play.  Their front three have caused us problems with movement and they should probably have a goal.  Was also thinking we seem to have lost our counter attacking threat but then we go and slice them apart.

Doyle is a proper forward.

Grant has looked very solid, Lyden has more mobility about him and isn’t doing too bad if he is indeed playing with a toe injury.

Still lots to improve to get back to where we were.  Good that we can put that midweek game down to a freak training session.  Must admit, thought the injury curse was going to strike with three players going down.  Grant literally fouled himself.

I’ve had suspicions so far this season, but I’ve now come to the conclusion that we aren’t actually very good, and will likely be scrapping out for 7th at best

When the going gets tough, this team has literally zero sense of what to do - not through lack of effort, but lack of shape and lack of a plan to counteract an opposition, and that lays at the door of the coaching staff

Frustrating game, reasonable first half poor second half. Think Wellens must take a bit of the blame as his substitutions and game management is his Achilles heel. Isgrove and Anderson both had hamstring injuries in the first and were lacking a yard of pace and when combined with 2 up front left big holes for Plymouth to run into. Substitutions were too late and gave them the momentum.

Will mention the ref as he lost the plot, some of his decisions second half were baffling, seems they can just sit on the ball and win a free kick.

The summer recruitment never really looked like a serious try at auto... and now we're having a bit of a regroup by plundering the out of work pool. Not a bad tactic, and we are better off that last season when we were proper average, but have now dropped behind Flitcroft's side at same stage.

Today's outcome is OK, when on a slide you need to get back to fundamentals, and not losing was important.

I'll take that, think we shaded the first half and we're just about worth the lead but as Wellens said, we were tired second half and did well to withstand their pressure. A few weeks of playing that XI and we'll be back on form. No problemo.

Impressed with Donohue as well, he looks and moves like Gladwin but can actually play LB. Decent looking acquisition.

Hate to say this,  but this time I'm going to let my head rule my heart, Can't see us getting anything out of this,   but would be more than happy to be proved wrong.
Just got in,  happy to be proved wrong but a game that could have gone either way.   We certainly tired towards the end,  good stop by Benda in the 93rd minute. A second goal in the first half would probably have been the clincher but the  muff probably feel it was also there for the taking.  Not going to be easy next Saturday, fitness definitely needs to improve if we're going to be there at the end of the season.

I would regard that as a good point. Plymouth are a decent physical side who had a big away following and the momentum after spanking us earlier this week. I expect they will do okay this year. It was good to stop the run of defeats and there are lots of positives, particularly with the new boys doing well; Benda had a few good saves, Zakuani looked solid as did the new LB. It was a niggly encounter and we could have easily crumbled under the pressure after conceding. Lots of players were getting stuck in; Lyden taking a shot to the balls being a good example. Hopefully the belief is back and we can start to string some consecutive results and performances together.

Was my first match of the season today. Not overly impressed but we worked hard to get that point. Felt throughout the game that Plymouth had the edge - seemed to find it a bit easier to create something clear cut, although they struggled to finish it off on a few occasions.

I was surprised at the lack of ball on the floor we played with. Way too much hoofing especially when you don't have a proper target man up top.

Doughty is not a left-winger. Anderson didn't really offer anything. Same for Woolery when he came on - didn't look to have any understanding with Yates or Doyle.

On the plus side, I thought we looked fairly solid at the back. All of the back four did a job. Grant is a great signing and Lyden has a touch of glass but I wonder if Doughty could offer us a bit more threat going forward from central midfield.

Title: Re: Swindon v Plymouth pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: NotHarryAgombar on Sunday, October 13, 2019, 07:21:50
I enjoyed the game yesterday. I thought a draw was a fair result - we were the better team first half, they were on top second half. We had a couple of chances second half, notably when Woolery shot past the post late on.
A terrible referee - very inconsistent eg first half they delayed 3 free kicks by standing over the ball and blocking or kicking it away,  no yellow card issued, but Baudry picks the ball up to do this second half and gets a yellow. There was also a spell where he seemed to be giving free kicks based on appeals from the crowd / players. At one point I thought a red card 2nd yellow) was likely (no specific incident, just his erratic decision making) so pleased we dodged that one.
I felt we seemed to sit very deep second half - listening to RW in the car he highlighted the number of players who were playing their first game for a while making tiredness a factor which seems a fair point. I thought Donoghue played well and looked a better defender at left back than Iandolo or Fryers. Was surprised Anderson stayed on as long as he did given he looked to have a hamstring problem early. Same with Isgrove. Thought Benda looked solid enough, and the thing which may give him an edge over LMc is that Luke doesn’t look very comfortable when the ball is at his feet, and RW wants to play out from the back. There was also one quick throw out to Isgrove which started a counter attack which I liked.
Ultimately pleased we got a point - in recent seasons, avoiding defeat when we don’t win has been a problem (Bradford last week a good example too) over the season there will be games like this where we need to take a point and move on. Promotion contenders are generally good at securing / managing the game to get a point in these situations.

Given all the shit we're dealing with, that was a good performance and a good result. Benda, Zakuani and Donohue look sufficient and we'll only improve with fitness. Grant is a monster and Lyden had a great game too.

We've had a really shit few weeks but fingers crossed we're through the worst and we can build again from 7th. A few weeks of consistent team selection and the fixture list easing and things will look positive again.

Only major concern, injuries aside, is what the hell is happening with Doughty. Mentality seems terrible.

Fair play to Power for allowing RW to react and bring in good short term signings too.

Title: Re: Swindon v Plymouth pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Wobbly Bob on Sunday, October 13, 2019, 08:22:54
It’s almost a case of the team having to gel again and settle into a consistent first X1 selection.
Thirteen league games in and we’ve had 5 different CB combinations, 4 left backs, Grant & Lyden playing only their second game together and two key players either carrying or still recovering from muscle injury.

There is a very good team in there somewhere. We’ve all seen it.

Hopefully the Plymouth fans have recovered from the trauma of experiencing not one but two shitholes in a day. Plenty more to come in L2 and they have a lot further to travel for the pleasure and it could have done with raining a bit harder yesterday.

A busier than usual walk down Drove Road to be met by 7 or 8 riot vans parked on the MR. Also walked past someone lying prone on the ground with police around him. Seemingly waiting for some medical assistance. Presumably the knuckleheads had been going ‘toe to toe’ pre match.

I thought we played quite well first half, however we seemed to be held back by players dropping like flies. Anderson after his treatment was clearly not right and this hindered his performance as he was clearly carrying an injury. His replacement Doughty may as well not have bothered, poor effort and body language. An even first half ended well as Doyle finished off a lovely move with an exquisite dunk over the keeper.

Plymouth sent their team out 5 minutes early and as we sauntered out for the second half we seemed laboured with Plymouth taking charge. Zakuani did an impression of someone that hadn’t played much football recently with poor passes and clearances but got a grip of it. We looked a tired side as we sat deep, Plymouth kept composed and got the goal they deserved with a good move. We could have won had Woolery shown any finishing ability whatsoever (such a frustrating player) and Benda made a flying stop to ensure a share of the spoils.

Player wise, Doyle looks a good acquisition, probably shouldn’t be playing at this level. Yates ran his bollocks off from 0-90, Mr Doughty could take a leaf out of Mr Yates’ work ethic, feeble from Doughty. Defensively, not bad, Zakuani had some shaky moments but was ok and in Hunt and Donohue, 2 solid full backs. Grant was my MOM, a monster performance, again, probably playing a level below where he should be.

Few other things I noted:

How many times did the PA announce about the 5:40 train to Plymouth second half??
The Plymouth fan who thought it was hilarious to hold onto the ball to stop Benda taking a goal kick. They were 1-0 down and he was wasting his own teams’ tome. Silly boy.
I saw the yellow jacket meathead one of the other posters mentioned earlier. Was close to the DRS side of the Stratton Bank

Overall a draw a fair result but I think Wellens has work to do. Crewe away will be a big test, we’ll need to be better to get anything.

Oh and one last thing. When Plymouth were 1-0 down they made a sub, the player coming off was right next to the DRS and went to run off below us, the lino made him run all the way over the pitch to go off by the dug outs! Which goes completely against the new rule change.

Think there have been a few issues most notably a Leeds player at Millwall I think it was so wouldn't be surprised if it has been quietly done away with.

Whereas it's all about opinions, I don't think I've seen or heard anyone dispute that there was an overall lack of match fitness on the pitch, with Anderson and Isgrove suffering the most... and that the second half was therefore going against us from the start.

Despite the injuries, we comfortably have enough of a squad to throw on some fresh legs for any period of time. Both substitutions were clearly made far too late, and the decision to decline a third one makes no sense. Surely someone such as Rose could have done a job for 10-20 minutes?

Credit to the players for holding on and seeing the game out. But, for the second consecutive home game, I can't understand what Wellens was thinking re: subs.
