Title: Cambridge Utd v Swindon Town pre match chat and match day thread
Post by: 4D on Friday, September 20, 2019, 08:03:44
Sigh. Will be a tough game, but it's not a Tuesday, we are away from home, and I'm going out instead.

2-1 to town, back on track.

Att: 3,876 (645 away)

Good test and a big pointer for the season in my opinion.

Couple of injuries, come back after heavy defeat, decisions for Wellens re selection and style of play.

I'm up for another win all but a narrow one

As Knoyle said - a step up in class to go to a club like Cambridge and their 3K+ crowds so it will be difficult for us to get a result.

Yeah I'm still salty about it

Agree.

Cambridge look one of those sides better away than home so gives a bit of hope. However the wins back to back at Crewe and Mansfield were very impressive, and a win for them by 2 clear like Macc last week would take them above us, so in that sense a point not so bad.

THey do however have the ex Town player factor in Knoyle and Richards, although I'm not feeling Tuesday's inevitable Theo thing.

As a number of us have said in other matchday threads, our style works better away than at home, not least because few teams will play 9 back for long periods as some do at the CG. After Tuesday it’s important we don’t lose again as we need to keep up with / close to the top 3.
On balance I think we will get something at Cambridge, but they have had two impressive results in the last week, so we may have to settle for a point. Looking at the bigger picture (rather than focussing on Tuesday) in May we could well regard that as a very good result. Nil-nil or 1-1 possibly.

90% of the time a point away from home is a decent result, same again tomorrow

As Danny Rose pointed out, promotion winning sides don't lose back-to-back games. This is big.

I don't really know what to expect from them. On the one hand, on paper they're poor and the last two big away wins both came against 10 men. On the other hand, lose and they go level with us on points.

Fully expect a reaction to Saturday performance wise, but it might not be enough.

Team wise, expecting changes. I'd go:

             Benda
Hunt Baudry Conroy Fryers
          Rose Grant
   Keshi    Doughty   Woolery
                 Doyle

Bit risky, but not "droppping" Yates and Isgrove - more rotating and keeping people fresh. Expect them both to make an impact off the bench if we need them to.

Score draw, 750 town fans.

Knoyle or Rob Hunt. Fuck me, no contest there. Wellens knew what he was doing with that one.

McCormick retains his place according to Wellens - as he should.

No doubt about it. Still enough of us around who remember those days like it was yesterday to give him the kind of reception which would only be right and proper

Edit: 8 seasons, 412 (2) appearances 21 goals ...gave his all in every second of every one of them.

Pre match cracking on with drinking career in The Regal.

I don't doubt that Kyle Knoyle will have a decent career at L1/L2 level, but very happy with Rob Hall, probably our most consistent player so far.

So, unbeaten on a Saturday and away so far.
What could possibly go wrong.
All the away trips have been bright sunshiney days.
Same again today. Don't think we'll lose.

The rest stops between here and the ground are all planned in.
Hopefully comfortably numb come 5pm.
I doubt that the surplus of brain cells here will do much to replenish the ones that have been lost over the years.
Oh and if anyone is visting for the first time, watch out for the cyclists, they come at you from all angles in this place.

Not a big fan myself Reg, although the music of choice whenever the bong was being passed around in student days was always Pink Floyd.

Will be cutting through Parker's Piece though, where the beautiful game was first played under the rules that would later be adopted by the FA.
Hopefully a few that go between the posts and under the string for us today.

Cambridge have started quite well so far under Claderwood who yesterday signed a 2 year extention to his contract.

Knoyle and Richards will both have a point to prove against us.

They are playing us on the back of 2 great away results winning at Crewe 3-2 and then going to Mansfield and winning 4-0.

Looks like they have playmaker and ex Pox midfielder Carruthers out and there is an injury doubt with Knoyle.

Thier fans are very confident they can turn us over after their last 2 games.

Town are unbeaten in our last 4 visits there with a draw there last season preceeded with 3 wins before that, Cambridges last win there back in 1995. Swindon have won 4 and drawn 2 of the 10 meetings there between the sides.

Lets see how the players react to Tuesdays surprise home defeat, I think we will play as....

                 LMc
Hunt   Broadbent Conroy   Fryers
        Grant       Doughty
Isgrove                          Anderson
                       Yates
             Doyle

Subs: Benda, Reid, Curran, May, Woolery, Iandolo, Rose

I have a feeling he will drop Rose and bring in Doughty but will stick with Broadbent if Baudry is not fit to play. He has already stated he wills tick with LMc and I don't want his to change the attacking options as they just almost entirely had an off day, all at the same time.

Get back to what we do best.

I think if Baudry is unfit then Wellens will give him one more go. Just a feeling I have, hes not one for a knee jerk reaction from what I have seen of him, even if Broadbent has under performed each time he has played this season.

Broadbent needs to be taken out of the firing line.
So Fryers in and Iandolo stays at LB or Reid & Hunt at FB if RW wants to tinker.

The only thing in TB's favour is that Cambridge might not have the pace up front that Colchester had.
Although it says a lot when there is a concern over a CB being able to keep up with Richards.

I had wondered if Wellens thought Curran was ready to start but I have only seen him play for a total of about 50 mins so far so I haven't seen enough of him to make a judgement on him.

Either way it would seem Fryers is ready for a starting slot again whether at CB or LB.

There is no doubt that Broadbent needs to be managed carefully as something is not right with him, whatever that may be.

I think he should stick with Broadbent if Baudry is out, starting a game is completely different to coming on as sub.  If he overlooks him for this one then you can pretty much write him off for the season and my opinion is we need a back up CB that is confident.  Overlooking him now will take any confidence he has left away.  He just needs a game that he can prepare right for (hopefully he has this week) get back to what he did when he came in and regain his confidence.

If it doesn't work today then fine, but I think you at least have to give him a full game to play himself back into fight for first team shirts.

Their keeper Mitov doesn't like coming out for corners, but so far the 3 massive CBs are coping.

Cambs have 3 very slow and cumbersome centre backs.

10 games in is where you can realistically start to make an informed assessment.

20 points of out 30, the better team in 9 out of those 10 games.

Very encouraging, we will be in right in the mix for the top 3

Quote
The U's made to work very hard by a classy and tough Swindon outfit, who edge it through Jerry Yates' first half goal at the Abbey.

Attendance was 4,443 (736 Swindon fans)

Strangely, probably our most encouraging result. Didn’t play well, could have scored a few and dug in.

The sort of performance Reg usually says we need.

Just a bit of a worry that injuries might threaten to derail our progress. Ballard and Jayewotsit longer-term, Baudry and Lyden out, Anderson maybe a doubt now. You wouldn't want to lose too many more of our first choices, and we're not even into the tough months yet.

Good result, not a great performance, became a little passive in the second half and looked tired.

Isgrove sub was well timed by Wellens as he'd seemingly allowed himself to get wound-up.  I'd imagine a mix of frustration with his own performance and being pulled back several times when looking good for a counter.

Doyle worked his socks off upfront and could have had a couple on a better day.

For as scrappy as it was, they really only had one good chance and we had three or four.

A grinder!
Not at our best, but the best win this season.
I like it.

Kept any threat from them down to a minimum.
Keeper did what he's paid to do.
Job done.

A few looked out on their feet at the end.
The coming week needs to be about patching them up and resting up a bit.

Some tough looking games coming up now. Will be a big test of how well we are performing as a new team against fancied opposition. Today by all accounts was a ground out result after a disappointing scoreline against Colchester on Tuesday. A good indication of a strong team to come back away from home. So I am hopeful that those toughies coming up will be met with a steely determination and positive results.

Not that I'm aware of. The 'Oh Colin Colin' song was sung by a few at the end but not acknowledged.

We did what we needed to do. Pretty comfortable in hindsight but at the time of course you never feel comfortable at 1-0.

McCormick was excellent when called upon.

Iandolo is a revelation at left back. Look forward to seeing that run again on the highlights later.

Like the look of Fryers at CB

Doyle and Grant were excellent. Solid performances from everyone else, the wheels are firmly back on.

Really glad we don't have a game midweek as a lot of our lot were really struggling at end. I'm not saying they're particularly unfit - I wasn't looking at the Cambridge lads, they were probably the same after playing midweek as well.

Got to be happy with that though.

And to be fair, rightly so, It's not realistic to expect us to waltz through the league winning all the games we need to by playing thrilling edge of your seat lovely football (although I'd hope we win more like that than not). Every now and then you need to grind out an ugly one, more importantly you need to be able to do so. Today showed we can do that as well as the lovely stuff. Therein lies hope of promotion.

Fun day out, notwithstanding the lack of pubs.

Struggled to tear myself away from the bar behind the away end so only watched the last 30 mins.  Thought the town looked pretty comfortable but lacked the killer edge to finish the game off.

I'm pretty positive for the season.  I'm sure there aren't 7 better teams than us and an auto place looks perfectly possible.

Only nearby pub, The Wrestlers,  was closed so made do with the home supporters bar pre match. Entered the busy away end to enjoy the sun 2 pints up: happier still when 1 goal up. 2nd half showed signs of a promotion season. Grant may well be more key than Isgrove ultimately. Lacked the pizzazz of the Leyton performance but definitely an indicator of real potential this year. Injuries/ complications over loanees may hinder us at some stage but we’re in with a chance. Only one bad league defeat so far and worth noting that we’ve held 2 of the current top 3 away from home. So happy for the long suffering Town faithful at the moment.

It's been mentioned before that at this sort of stage in the season most teams will be around + or -3 places at season's end.  However there are always 2 or 3 who rise or drop spectacularly.

81/82 is a season which still wakes some of us up in the night in a cold sweat.  After 10 we were top with the same W6 D2 L2 as now but a stonking goal difference of +11 and were the Divs leading scorer.   A team which seemed a blend of youth and experience had just stuffed Rovers at Eastville then went to Fellows Park on a Tuesday night. Fellows Park was a ground where we tended not to do well, but this was a classic, played very well and lost 5-0, to much head scratching.

Never really recovered and got relegated. We even managed 52 points which is usually more than enough in a 4 down div.

A very pleasing result - good to come back from Tuesday with a win. Averaging 2 points a game after 10 is a good sign.
Also, as others have said, these narrow (1-0) wins will prove to be vital come the end of the season. I recall the 1969 promotion team had a run of 5 or 6 1-0 home wins in the spring, with most of the goals in those coming from Peter Noble.
It’s the sign of a good team to be able to grind these out on days when we are not at our absolute best.
Another 1-0 win against Newport on Saturday would be good!

No as ever, I point out a fact associated with the taking a view of the 10 games in mark as being a predictor.  Where our present rate coincidentally happens to be the exact same W D L as 81/82.

I'm long past expecting a grown up response from you, it's almost like you've no actual interest in the football beyond petty abuse.

Here's the classic 10th game 4-1 at Eastville.... proper 80's football.

http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=19820110

Rovers fans were out in the streets, armed with CB radios, which became legal in 81 having been used illegally up til then.

Sexy stuff, idiot yokels telling each other where the Swindon fans were. Although in those days there was a code that you only engaged with like minded types, of which we had plenty.

That was my last trip to Eastville, I do still get a pang of regret when passing the site now IKEA on the M32

Exactly how I saw it in the consistent theme of the "alternative comms". The line/phrase in question ironically, is probably the only one in the whole piece that bares most fact. Now that is saying something!

I think he's done one for every game so far this season. Or at least most of them

What you have there is very irreverent / black / gallows humour - call it what you will. But as soon you make any attempt at political correctness or sparing anyone's feelings it loses everything and there's no point even doing it. The flip side is that some one, somewhere isn't going to like it - it is what it is.

Must check those out. Is he the same person who did the Vincent Pericard thing? That was equally as funny.

I still have a copy of Elliot Benyon's wikipedia article saved somewhere. Never has a player proved to be more of a disappointment based entirely on hype from forum chicanery.

Good news that Woolery is fit for Saturday and Baudry/Anderson injuries dont sound long term and if not ready in time for Saturday, could return for Bradford game, important given that Doyle wont be available.

No, I'm Sonic Youth. I'm back for now but I want more jokes about me being Fulham now, if I'm to stick around. I can't get enough of that.

Pre match on Saturday Wellens said we had another development game today behind closed doors, he didn't say the opposition or where it was though, wonder if there will be updates like the AFCW game.
Turns out it was Reading.
