Title: Swindon v Macclesfield pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, 13:59:24
Earlier than usual, but what the hell  :)
Macc don't appear to be pushovers, they haven't lost a game by more than one goal. Imo we seem to be a more dominant side away from home and I'm a little nervous about this one. I'll say 1-1 att: 6,686 (154 away).

Unfortunately I cannot make this one, forgot I had something else on  :(

The second of the five wins during September. Shame we seem to struggle replicating the exhilarating play from the away games at the CG, but hey ho, another 3 points in the bag.

Thank God for that ;) In that case, another 3-1 first half with obligatory second half shut out.

5-2, cavalier stuff, everyone gets carried away and we follow it up with a 0-1 loss.

Didn’t realise there was a game on last night, what with England playing, but Macc lost on pens away at Grimsby in the Caribou Cup. With an away tie at Chelsea as the prize!

Cautiously optimistic (if that isn’t an oxymoron).
High scoring attack v tight defence means something has to give. Also means we will need to keep it tighter at the back - a clean sheet would be good. I’d settle for a win by the odd goal. 1-0 or 2-1.
Looking at the bigger picture I’d settle for 4 points from these 2 home games - we have a poor recent record v Colchester.
I agree with the earlier post that our quick counter attacking system seems to work more fluently away.

That's a good spot, hopefully the won't be able to afford an over night stop, so will have to travel Saturday

Its all too much for one of the 80 or so travelling Macc Lads to bear on their forum.

I like watching Macc, but the thought of actually paying money to go to Swindon puts me off this one

Power must have pissed in his half time chip barm when he was down last time.

Odd to single out Swindon there, League Two is rather short of attractive tourist towns. Can't imagine TripAdvisor is swamped with people looking to spend time in Fleetwood, Grimsby, Newport or Oldham. It's only really Exeter and Cambridge in the whole league that stick out as nice trips, football aside.

Either wouldn't have come anyway or came down last season and is still butthurt after the late winner.

I see a typical Tuesday night disaster coming up v Colchester next week so important we win this one.

Think it'll be another 3-1 win.

This was my thinking too. In 2012 when a single Paul Benson goal beat them they only brought 38 away fans.

They dont ever travel in numbers TBF to them, I expect even with them in 9th position I doubt they will much exceed 100.

Macclesfield have done well this season so far, sitting proudly in 9th place in the table

Their equal top scorers this season are Archibald, Ironside, Vassell and Stephens on 2 goals a piece.

In matches between the 2 clubs at the CG Swindon have won all 3 of the league games and Macc just the one win in the FA cup. In the league Swindon have scored 6 times and only conceded 2 goals both in last seasons 3-2 win for Swindon where Doughty scored a hattrick.

They are due in court in October for another winding up petition after it was adjourned again today for a £73,000 debt to the HMRC.

So far this season they have had a run of league results of LWWLWDD (Swindon WWDLDWW f14 a8) scoring 9 and conceding 6 along the way, they have beaten Orient and Scunthorpe at home and beaten Northampton away with draws home to Crawley and away at Stevenage but losing at home to Morecambe and away at Exeter both 1-0. They have kept 2 clean sheets so far.

Macc have a few players with a Swindon connection, Jak McCourt, Reice Charles-Cook and Michael Rose, all 3 players made little or a bad impression while with us TBH. Rose and RCC both being poor and McCourt just being an average L2 player at best.

The only person at Swindon with a Macc connection is Richie Wellens who had a very short spell with them at the end of his career just a couple of seasons ago. McGlashan has played for them but is not currently at Swindon.

2-1 defeat with Doyle scoring in front of 6,855 with 97 Silkies there.

He has only played 1 game so far, in the EFL trophy so it would be his league debut for them if he did start.

I would raise my expectiations massively of a Swindon win if he was starting :)

So, this is the final game for Doughty to sit out.

Never thought I’d ever be asking this question, but . . .

Does he get straight back into this team? I presume Rose is his replacement at the moment and he was brilliant at Orient. Another performance like that tomorrow and he can’t get dropped.

Fantastic position for the club to be in.

Doughty is better than Rose so he always goes back in ahead of him.

With Lyden out, is there an arrangement that could facilitate Doughty and Rose?

Grant is Lyden’s replacement.

Certainly at homes games. Away would play 2 more defensive minded midfielders so 2 of Lyden, Rose and Grant for me. Nice to have options though.

Rose played really well on Saturday, Rose is more of a complete midfielder than Doughty but Doughty offers much more going forwards and is alwayslikely to pitch in with a goal.

Grant is a straight replacement for Lyden, any idea how long Lyden is out for? I haven;t seen it mentioned anywhere.

Title: Re: Swindon v Macclesfield pre match chat and matchday thread

I would think he will start with this formation.

                 LMc
Hunt   Baudry Conroy   Iandolo
        Grant       Rose
Isgrove                    Anderson
                       Yates
             Doyle

Subs: Benda, Reid, Broadbent, May, Woolery, Twine, Sidy(now clearance is through)

Yates playing the number 10 role and linking up play with Doyle as he has done so well the last couple of games. Unless Fryers is back to fitness in which case I would play him ahead of Iandolo. As long as we don't have any fresh injury worries of course.

Don't hold out much hope of listening to the commentary too or not missing action due to many many pointless replays!

I would think they have got the commentary to tie in to the match no more than twice this season so far!

Would be great to cement our place near the top with a few back to back wins. My dad is going for the first time in a while after boycotting due to Power. I think recent results and highlights have persuaded him that we may be worth watching this year. He has any excuse to be pessimistic so if we lose I won’t hear the end of it. We have the quality in the squad to get a result today. I hope we can extend Isgrove’s contract. That should be a priority. Does anyone know if we have the option of an extra year? Power often seems to build in options into the contracts.

Macclesfield have certainly started better than most, including myself, expected but they're beginning to dip a little now.

I dream of a emphatic victory but I think we'll make it difficult for ourselves.

I predict Town to be 2-0 up for ages and then Macclesfield score in the 85th minute with 5 minutes then added on.

FT 2-1.

They have blocked 99.9% of all VPNs about half way through last season. You need a very good private VPN to be able to watch it so I hear.

Macc lining up as 352 today the same side that ended the game vs Crawley.

So pretty much as Orient did last weekend.

That will probably mean they will be playing more like a 532  as they have 5 recognised defenders playing, with Isgrove and Anderson bombing down both wings for Town which will allow Rose to bring the ball forward in midfield with Grant sat back in front of the back 4 but it will also mean Hunt and Iandolo should be able to get forward a lot as the wingback will be marking our wingers.

I know what FH means about Grant. Seems to do nothing much but some easy looking passes which, actually, are anything but. Looks a nasty fucker as well. Seems well versed in sly shithousery too.

Iandolo doing fine, but seems to lack confidence going forward - almost always stops, turns and passes back.

Maybe the 3Bs are starting to take their toll on the Macc players.

For me Grant is my MoM so far, doing all the dirty work in midfield.

Doyle and Anderson both very much deserved their goals, both worked their socks off, Rose looking like the Rose of last season again.

Hunt looking classy with the ball, a massive step up from Knoyle. Iandolo looks ok at LB, put a few decent passes in but he still pulls the ball back too often when in good crossing positions. Still doing ok though.

Yates frustrates and impresses in equal measure, sometimes he gets in great positions and falls over the ball but at other times he can pick a pass thro loads of legs and looks a real handful. Doyle running all over the front line, a great signing.

Isgrove is a 90% great player, his control, and dribbling is way above L2 and his crossing is so close to being brilliant, another great signing.

LMC, Baudry and Conroy have not has much to do but they have done it perfectly well so far.

It all looks good.

Had to be patient there. Macclesfield come to frustrate, much like Northampton. There is so much confidence in this side though. I haven’t once felt like we’re not going to win this, even on that frustrating first 30 mins. It’s strange to feel like that after 4-5 years of uneasiness and shite. I like it.

Exactly.  The change this season has been that forward threat - we look like we will score even when a team sits in.  That creates a real catch 22 for teams playing us now.  Sometimes sitting in may get a reward but it seems more often than not we will pick them off.  If they go for us, we have the pace to counter and a player like Isgrove who must be a full backs nightmare.

Cracking stuff again today, and you still feel there is more in the tank if needed.  Two of our goals today were superb football.

Grant is everything we need in the middle, but so is Lyden.  Rose looks classy, but so would Doughty.  Looking very good, played a third of the league, looked better than every team we have played so far.

He doesn't really remind me so much of Kamara but I can see where you are coming from, his short passing is excellent, he finds a Town player with 95% of all his passes, he dabbles with long passes at times and almost always finds his target.

He does the dirty stuff and mops up everything in front of the back 4, rarely not winning the ball when he does go in to the tackle.

He often plays with his back to the opposition as he always weighs up his best pass, which is often backwards, which at times is exactly what we need.

He is also pretty good in the air too and knows all the dirty little tricks to win fouls.

Yes maybe he is a bit Kamara like!

In my late twenties, I'd have ended it all there and then at the thought of my grey self wildly singing New Romantic crap at the County.

But, I'm still standing  ;)

The real question is where is Reg and his acolyte red ken? Flicking each others bollocks to attain suitable misery levels ;)
Don’t worry - we are at home on Tuesday so he is sure to be along before then to remind us about our midweek curse and the importance of turning this around if we are to maintain our ‘upwards momentum’.

Excellent team performance today. I would have made Grant MOM for the way he controlled things for 75 minutes or thereabouts. Yates’ movement and bringing others into the game, Doyle’s finishing and Hunt’s all round play also stood out. But no poor performances anywhere. A clean sheet as well - to be fair LMc had an easy afternoon really as we were in control.
First half goals came at the right time as we needed to go in ahead at half time after dominating to the extent we had. It also enabled us to see out the game second half which we did quite comfortably.
Driving back afterwards I thought back to RW’s comments after the Lincoln game last season - when he talked about passing around the box until we got a shooting position rather than just getting a cross in - all 3 goals, particularly the second and third showed the benefits of that approach and composure in decision making.
This is a good squad team - and the fact we can even contemplate not bringing Doughty straight back in after suspension highlights the squad depth too.

I’ll go out on a limb here - this is the 3rd season in the basement. Although Luton didn’t actually win the league there were probably the best team and Lincoln pretty much had it wrapped up fairly early last season.

We’re way better than either of them - at the moment. Maybe the sticky winter pitches will even things out a bit.

I’ve always said the best squads wins leagues - and we’ve got the best squad by miles.

Christ, if we fuck up this season . . .

Unlikely. After the amount of seasons I've had it doesnt take long to know which bit of the table you'll end at. Another bonus is if we do need recruits come Jan, it's an easy sell.

Sometimes you just know. There aren't 3 teams better in this league, there isn't even on one. It's obvious.
Seriously though...Where's Reg?

I'm here.... bit of a rest between the cricket at the CG and the football at the CG.  Good stuff, my pub team playing the traditional end of season game v Bell from Bath, for a much coveted trophy, on short term loan to the Bell. A happy coincidence, family and friends, some doing cricket but not football, some football not cricket, some both.

The post match tea in pub will be long and messy, I haven't the stamina for 12 hr sessions any longer.

Macc looked like their good start was a bit of a fluke.... we looked like others will start to worry.

We are automatic promotion contenders. No doubt.

It's these type of potential banana skins, where you hope to come away with a point at best, that really give an indicator of a side on the up. To say we should be excited at getting a point against the Silks would be an understatement. To claim all three is something on the verge of lunacy in some people's eyes.

We will all have many variables relating to our opinions, throughout the season but when posters like Processed Beats and StefPol have no option but to applaud how good we are at this stage already, surely even Reg must be getting his tally whacker wet at the thought of the Town being the stand out team in this division? We even have a player in Grant, who can do the dirty work, which he so often preaches about being a necessity to get out of this division. We have necessity all across the park. We don't have an experienced right back or two ten goal strikers. We have two twenty goal strikers.

I'm fucking loving it!

PS: RobinNZ is the Kiwi dwelling Nostradamus. That's 3 in 3. Place bets now!

You do make me laugh.

I am a Swindon fan and want them to win every game. The difference between me and you is I can see the difference between when Swindon are playing well and when they are serving up dross.

The last couple of seasons Swindon have been poor yet if you read some of your and other poster in game and post game comments you would wonder why Swindon are not top of the league and playing in a much higher division. You only have to read comments made by Wellens at the beginning of this season where he stated he thought Swindon were fortunate with a few of their results last season and were not ready for promotion.  This contradicts pretty much most of your views from last season.

This season we have been really good. Wellens has changed the team and got them playing great football. The only way I can’t see us getting promoted is if a number of our loan players have to return to their parent clubs in January (so they can be sold on). Alternatively it wouldn’t surprise me if a club in a higher division tried to tempt Wellens to manage them or an underperforming club with more financial power then Swindon (ie Salford) tried to persuade him to leave.

Hopefully neither of these will be an issue and we will be playing league 1 football next season.

Says a lot that we're brushing teams aside without the likes of Doughty able to play. He's back on Tuesday and we'll be even stronger. What's more is that he'll probably be on the bench. The squad is there this time around. And it looks a brilliant one. Point me towards three better in this division and I'll laugh in your face.

Only injuries and the gaffer leaving will stop us this season. I'm expecting us to win the league to be honest.

Another promising win and we looked very good in attack and strong in defence. Grant looks a very good signing - I don’t know what the answer is when all 4 central midfielders are available, but it’s a great conundrum to be in

Would just temper some of the over exuberance by saying that I wouldn’t expect any of the teams we’ve beaten so far to be bothering the top half (although even that’s an improvement on the last 2 years)

It was my first game this season, so can't compare to recent games.  But only half (approx) of the blocks in the Arkells Stand were open at all to our fans.  And the Town End was only half full at best.

With only just over a hundred away supporters it’s not surprising the attendance looked at odds with the official figures announced and has been mentioned the Arkells stand is now condensed to look more packed for the cameras and stewarding no doubt.

Spandau Ballet had some pretty decent songs to be fair. Gold was without doubt the best.
Saw them live at Wembley many years ago,  absolutely superb - pretty much like towns performance yesterday,  couldn't fault it. Think the buzz has finally returned,  the applause Isgrove received when substituted sent a tingle down the spine, don't think a Swindon player has received that sort of ovation for years,  long may it continue.

I’m quietly confident that Doyle will be our player eventually. I read the Bradford forums before he signed and they weren’t sorry to see him go in the slightest. Whether he is just comfortable here or our style of play suits him, he’s clearly an asset here in a way he’s not up north. My guess is it’ll come down to whether we can afford him as opposed to a desire for them to sell

Reading on the Bradford dorum they seem to think they DO have a recall option on him, they said an interview on Radio Leeds confirmed we are not paying all of his wages and that they think they should recall him and sit him on their bench out of spite.

I guess we will only know for certain if Wellens or Power states it in an interview, which so far they haven't.

Power said yesterday that all season long loans had to be 'reviewed' in January but they were hopeful it would not be an issue or something like that - pretty vague really. It's easy for Bradford fans to say they should 'just recall' him but it's going to cost them money to do that. Money which presumably they don't have which is why they loaned him out in the first place. In an ideal world Mr Morfuni sticks his hand in his pocket and we buy him - easy for me to say of course.

That is the thing, if they have a recall option and recall him does he have to go back even if he wants to stay?

All pretty much irrellevant if there is no clause though.

At minimum he will not be available to play against Bradford for us.

I think a 'little nod' is understating it rather. It's totally down to Wellens that we are where we are - and to Power of course for employing him and giving him free reign whilst supporting him at key times (i.e. the Doyle signing)

To go up my guess is a team needs to average roughly two goals per game? However last seasons top three averaged 75 which is 1.63 per game with second place Bury scoring 82. You are asking an awful lot of a team without two 20 + goal strikers to all chip in to get enough week in week out to get to 75 yet alone 82. That’s 6.25 per player, again assuming your first 11 play all 46 uninterrupted. Goalie isn’t going to chip in and your back four next to nothing. Style of play is a factor but Man City or Liverpool we are not. As for old man Steptoe he is blocked so you or anyone can upset him as much as you like. Says something about the manager for persisting in getting both Doyle and Yates in. Stay fit, don’t get suspended and those two will on their own get us in the play offs. The others have a role of course as we have seen so far. I’d take no notice of the fans forum of other teams. Ask Wellens directly. In his new warm and cosy, engaging open door policy he’s likely to give you the answer directly. Tickets bought for Tuesday which in my mind is our first real test of our tactics and mental capacity to over come a team who has beaten us in anger, handsomely so too. Yeah the sending off was a bummer but the three goals is the stat at the end of the day. Muller these and that is another gauntlet thrown down for the others to pick up.

3% of sides gaining auto in the FL in the years of the 2010's, have had 2 20+ men. That's 2 out of 63. 34% have had 1.

What we can say is that Doyle will dry up at some stage and so we'll need to find some goals from other sources.

Over the past 4 seasons it seems getting 70 goals has been necessary to claim an auto spot, and going back a few more years at least 60 is needed with most having 70+.

In 2012, while nobody hit 20, we had 40 goals from strikers.

Reg will no doubt raise the Sturrock season, which on the face of it is an anomaly - getting up with 58 goals is certainly a statistical freak.  In fact, Bristol Rovers won the play offs that season having got into them by scoring only 49 goals!  So, who gets them may not be AS important, but getting them is.  17 in 8 games is pretty good going.

For some balance, defensive solidity does not seem as important.  Plenty of teams go up conceding more than a goal a game.

A lot of strikers have a streak and then dry up for a bit and perhaps can repeat another streak. Marc Richards when he came had 7 in 8 but then dried up somewhat. At his present rate Doyle would be on for between 40-50.... that isn't going to happen.  The trick is which to be fair is what we're doing, is to rack up the points while he's hot... the unknown is can we find alternative sources, when he's not?  Well Yates can step up and Anderson now has 3 and I've been saying for a while he and Kaiyne need to get up to 10 a season. I'd like to see some danger from corners and know we've someone who can slot a free kick, but apart from the Fryers effort not a lot here yet

By drying up I presumed you meant, maybe, only scoring another 6 or so this season.

If he ‘dries up’ to a mere 1 in 3 from now on he’ll still hit 20. If he stays - and stays fit - he’ll hit nearer to 30 than 20.

Another positive is that we’ve scored all of these goals without the help of any penalties.

During recent years, we’ve had more than our share, and have made a good job of scoring them. We know full well that Doughty can knock them in, logic suggests that Doyle and Yates could do so, and since late 2016 I think we’ve scored 20+ and only missed 1 (Keshi).

We’ll get a few of them over the season, and I see no reason why we  won’t capitalise when we do.

tbf, he's going to struggle to maintain a goal a game average. Every striker goes through a dry spell. But with Yates and Anderson both in scoring form, plus a few others chucking a few in, we have the goals in the team to overcome that, a bit like when we had the Mooney/Parkin or Austin/Paynter partnerships, if one wasn't scoring the other one generally was.

Having a defence that is tighter than a nuns chuff does not guarentee promotion either, just as not having a striker who can hit 20 goals doesn't.

Nothing is guaranteed in football.

But sometimes, just sometimes its good to focus on the positives and not the negatives in a team.

We can all be miserable bastards when it comes to Swindon Town, especially with our recent history, but some of us like to look at the good points and hope that we go from strength to strength. Look for the positives and actually (dare I say it), look forward to matches again.

There is a feel good factor at the club currently and it takes more than a few nay sayers to bring that down again.

Anyone that saw yesterdays match cannot fail to be impressed with our team at the moment and it is impossible to not enjoy watching us pass the ball around and totally destroy the opposition, in every area of the pitch for pretty much all of the game.

If you are not enjoying watching us play at the moment then I suggest you (not aimed specifically at Reg) go and follow a different sport or at least a different team.

This is what being a Swindon fan is all about for me.

Feeling part of the club again, feeling it is the start of something good (as we have pretty much all seen the signs), winning games, playing good football, not conceding many goals and looking far too good for this league.

I am enjoying it as in football things can change so quickly but that doesn't mean I will focus on the possible negatives I will concentrait on the already achieved and hope we will build upon that.

No, but it puts you a fair way towards it.
Exactly my point.

But we all know we don't have a 20+ goal a season striker, or an experienced right back, and we're forced instead to rely on callow youths like Hunt and summer trialists like Isgrove :)

Ffs, stop it.  There's barely any fucking tea left in my mug!  :D

I think Doyle will finish on 27, Yates on 23, Keshi on 9, Others 14. If Town score 3/4 more goals in the next 3 (at current, that's very achievable), they'll be on for 80-84 goals after 44 games. On the flip, Town are currently on to concede 44 goals after 44 games. So pretty much a 2:1 ratio. Town will lose the odd game or 6(six) for sure but tend to follow up with a bigger or more convincing win. Regardless of where they are come January, the movements and dealings will be key to ensuring Town's and our auto promotion success.

Of course it helps, and all well and good if you've goalscorers, but we know from past experience in a promotion campaign there will be times when you need goals from odd places when you need to scrape out a win.

The games in the times you're playing well look after themselves, but I can't think of a Town promotion campaign where we haven't need a few key goals from an unlikely source.

Sort of thing, Alan Mac in added on time at Cobblers, only scored 2 goals for Town, but that one was massive as it kick started a 9 game winning running on the back.  As yet we don't know if this side has that sort of thing in it over the course of a season, but it will hopefully be fun to see something develop.

I think it's what Wellens means when he talks of a fear of complacency... we might be good atm, but that can't be taken for granted, battles ahead.

Macclesfield saying four members of staff pictured out on the piss on Frirday "will be dealt with behind closed doors". Yikes! Sounds ominous, locked room and a baseball bat?

Could the Macc performance partly be down to this last night?

Yeah, it was widely discussed at the game on Saturday although then people were saying it was players not staff. But you've got to be a bit fucking stupid to go out on the piss in club kit.

Absolutely, not THE most intelligent thing they could have done it has to be said!

I'm not sure a lock in is the way to go.

Were they definitely on the piss though, rather than just out? Still stupid either way.

If it's staff and not players, then what's the issue? Aslong as they perform their job the next day.

No-one been out on the piss the night before work before?

Yes and it's often left me unable to perform my job the next day :) Not exactly professional is it?

According to the Macc forum it was a couple of players too.
