On one hand it's brave to go back to a formation the fans hate and that seems to nullify our attacking players if Ross believes it's tactically the best way to stop Swindon. On the other hand it's running scared of their attack and reducing our own goal threat. We'll see by 5pm which of the two it turns out to be.

I think he is just being very cautious against a good side. Come 5pm we will see if he was right, for now I’m prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. 352 is OK if Ling and Widdowson up their game and offer support but I’ve not see too much of that thus far. I’d expect this formation for an away game but at home it’s overly cautious and maybe even cowardly. You never know, if we don’t concede a stupid goal or two we may sneak a win.

Quite.  There is absolutely no reason to be happy about our best start to a league campaign (over the same 7 game stretch) since 2006/07. or having scored 14 goals in 7 games, getting two points per game and being the better team in all seven games (not always the winner, but certainly the better looking team), or having two goal scoring centre forwards.  No reason at all.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is one of those seasons where we can honestly say we have a very very good side for the division we're in - it's not up for debate.

We have a good number of players who would do well in L1 and at least a couple who could play higher than that.

Yep the point being that we'll need to win probably something like another 21 or so from 39, and some of the fixtures will look like better opportunities than others.  We'll need to make the most of those, in a 46 game season there will be times when it gets ugly, and it's how you react to that which gets you up.

There is a lot of individual talent in this team. Those responsible for recruiting have done an impressive job, some of our players should not be playing in L2.

Just looking at season stats so far...

Eoin Doyle - 5 goals
Jerry Yates - 4 goals
Keshi Anderson - 2 goals, 2 assists
Lloyd Isgrove - 5 assists.

Some very impressive stats by those four players seven games into the season.

Special mention to Keshi, I was ready to let him move on. Looks a totally different player after being on the verge of leaving the club and performing brilliantly. Showing some of the potential he's clearly always had.

2 goals per game is promotion stuff.  True the defence looks sloppy at times but that's a far easier problem to address than a lack of goals.

Perhaps we can also put to bed all the ridiculous historic reasons why we can’t expect to beat certain teams - the sort of reasons so beloved of Reg, for example.

I’ve never subscribed to the thought that previous results have any bearing on future results.

Next up it will be the midweek games voodoo.

October will be interesting with Crewe, Plymouth (twice) and Bradford all in a row.

Given some time to think, I am reassessing my review - we were fucking brilliant.  It was never in doubt, not for a second.  Now, Reg does have a point, sort of, in that if we want to be in the top three, we have to put these teams away.  But, as per my insistence that this feels like 95/96, we ARE putting them away and the teams are changing to try and stop us.  That season we didn't really batter anyone scoreline wise, but we usually came out on top or looked far better.  Last season we were ok, but struggled in some games to put teams away.  Yes we should be beating Orient if we want to go up, well, we did, and with plenty to spare.

Of course, we'll go and lose Wellens half way through the season now!

Lets enjoy it while it lasts, go on Reg, let is slip for a few days, or weeks.

Yesterday they were so dominant in midfield with Grant making his debut.

Swindon were not playing dirty but it was far too easy for them to push our players off the ball. The  Orient team are good ball players but too lightweight.

Today they were just completely beaten in every conceivable area of the game. It looked almost though they had never played together before. Swindon were almost showboating at times and it could genuinely have been 5  or 6. Obviously Swindon are a very good outfit and Isgrove and Anderson looked real class but a defence that looked so solid last season for us is really creaking now which is a worry. RE needs to learn lessons from today -  the first of which is that we a long way off being comfortable in this division - and act accordingly.

We have a top 7 budget this season apparently, this shows how far behind we are.

Swindon just completely dominated the half playing great football and when they lost it, pressed really high and quickly and Orient just couldn't deal with it and had no way of playing out and just kept giving possession back

I think we have seen a couple of the worst teams in L2 ie Cheltenham and Stevenage, and maybe some were lulled into a false sense of security, but today was a massive wake up call.

I can’t believe Swindon will only be a play off side if they perform like that every week. They were in absolute control for the full 90 minutes. Even their substitutes that came on were better than our first choice players.

You say 2 flukey goals but when you’re dominating possession like that and constantly testing a defence, you tend to get that ‘luck’. The half time score didn’t flatter them in the slightest.

I know some of these posts are in an above post, but, here is my usual post from the various Orient forums on the net with their thoughts about the game, 95% very complimentary TBH.

I may have mentioned the other day that we will get better as the season goes on and have the January window to deal in if we need. Not looking too shabby is it? Of course there are going to be some bumps in the road but as it stands I have a warm cosy glow about things and will get tickets for the Silkmen tomorrow.

Long may the feeling continue, we will have some games when we can't play at all but as long as we get back on track the next game and don't let our heads drop its all good.

Interestingly I honestly though that Phil Brown was the man to kick start the malaise and downward spiral into the long grass. With his experience, contacts and character I did mention that he could do a Lou Macari for us. Just goes to show how far off the mark one can be. Of course there is a long, long way to go until we reach where  I believe we should be, the championship. With a developed ground of course, now where did I put the crystal ball mystic Meg left me?

Thing is, Brown has a unique insight to what he has/had player wise at the final whistle of game 45 last season. He has acted accordingly with the retained and released list, offered contracts and subsequently future targets. Also he has a two month head start on what Flipflop had and if I may be so bold, more experience and probably better contacts. For the aforementioned reasons i’m optimistic enough to feel that PB will not only put together a promotion winning team but a team capable of winning the league, so much so that I shall put some money on it.

It's worth remembering that we've still got Doughty to come back in along with Sanokho and DJ. OK, the latter two are 'wild cards' to a degree in that we don't know loads about them but they have the potential to be pretty exciting additions to the squad.

On another note, as we've been making comparisons with the 95-96 season, that game yesterday reminded me very much of Brentford away when we won 2-0 with goals from O'Sullivan and Finney. We utterly played them off the park from start to finish and really did look a league above and again (as always at Brentford) we had massive away support - almost exactly the same point in the season...2/9/95

Some fans have forgotten the absolutely brilliant quality of the football played in the first couple of seasons of McMahons tenure.

We played so many teams off the park that season, great passing and goals from all over the pitch as well as Allison, Finney and Thorne all scoring more than 1 goal every 2 games.

The memory is obviously overshadowed by the later year of McMahons rule but in that season we played as good football as I have seen by a Town side.

The home game vs Hull when Grant scored a great goal in that we won 3-0 there was one period of 5 mins of the game when Hull didn't even get close to kicking the ball, we kept it in play passing to every player on the pitch at one point. With the usual "Ole" shouts with every touch from Town fans.

Yes there was a poor run before the Hull game with just 1 win in 10 games but we still only lost 2 of those, our problem was not scoring enough goals, which happens to even the best sides. Its about how you recover from a run of winless games, something we did very well as we only had 1 more defeat all season from the end of January.

Darius Henderson scored 4 in his first 3 games too.

Bill Stephens in the 46-47 season didn't score in his first game but then proceeded to score 11 in the next 5 games.

Sam Parkin got 4 in his first 2 games but then didn't score for another 7 games.

Morris Jones scored in his first 3 matches.

So none of them scored in their first 4 games. Hope we're not putting the mockers on JY here

Oh I agree about that but the performance itself was still pretty good, I was getting more at the "bad day at the office" style performances where nothing goes right for the team.

I've been told, at work, that I have a tendency to come across as though I think I am always right.  I replied "I am, I only offer an opinion or talk when I think I am right".
