Title: Internet Problems
Post by: horlock07 on Thursday, August 22, 2019, 09:29:16
Anyone have any ideas regarding this?

I work from an office at the bottom of the garden, connected to the net via a buried (in a duct) cable as the wi-fi is about 5 metres too short for me to pick it up.

Worked fine for about 18 months but now office has got incredibly slow. Net works fine in house yet up here whilst things like TEF will work as normal email is pedestrian slow as is upload speed, I have a voip (think that's what its called) phone up here and that works fine also.

All seems to have coincided (although may be entirely coincidentally) with windows doing a massive update on Friday afternoon last week?

Any ideas, I could replace the cable but that would mean digging the bloody garden up again, likewise whilst we could just try wi-fi extenders would a voip phone work with that?

Its starting to piss me off now!

Given that your VOIP phone is working it is highly unlikely to be a network issue as VOIP is uniquely sensitive to latency and packet loss. There is a whole industry around maintaining VOIP over poor connections.

Have you got another computer/laptop you can try? I would rule out the endpoint device before thinking about your cabling.

Unlikely to be the cable, sounds like a software rather than network issue (as you say VOIP and browsing are OK, but just email that is slow). Might be worth playing dumb and calling your ISP's tech support people though, they may try to rule out known software issues first, so might be able to work you through a checklist of known issues, esp if there's just been a big Windows update, that always causes problems

Like others have said, probably windows update. Which email system do you use? Could be an issue with their system. Have you tried something like GMail? Is that slow?

Are the emails slow to send/receive?

Thanks all.

I could try the wife's laptop, problem is she doesn't use outlook which is the email package I use and is running bloody slowly. Just tried to upload a file to the net (to compress a PDF) and its suggesting the upload speed is 9kbs at the moment so suspect that's where the blockage seems to be lying!

Have you tried the web version of outlook?

Have you tried the web version of outlook?

That would mean my trying to dig out my outlook password etc.  :( :D

We do have some IT support, I will probably leave it for now and get in touch with him after the weekend!

Thanks again, frankly its the issue with the cabling which was worrying me as it would involve ballache physical works, if its software based it can be sorted.

If you are worried about the cabling, you can get a cable tester for less than a tenner.

Ta!

One bloody thing, the update seems to have installed a new programme called Microsoft Teams which opens on start up and seems loathe to disappear!

Not sure of the layout of your garden but would you not be able to tie new cable to the old one and pull it through the Conduit?

just to totally rule out cabling, which to be honest the Tef already has, can't you just plug your laptop into the router with a much shorter cable inside the house.

bound to be a Microsoft update fuck up.

Its getting into either end of the conduit which would be the problem...

DNS

Could do I s'spose...

Have you tried defragging the ethernet ram bus?

How big is your outlook mailbox?

It suggests that I have 41.3G free of 49.5G so 8.2G I assume...

Have you tried defragging the ethernet ram bus?

I quite honestly have no idea what you are talking about, that just looks like a random collection of words to me?  :D

Oh that's been on the agenda for most of the week, thankfully I had a trip to Cardiff (4 hours each way) yesterday to keep me out the office and calm me down!

Having problems with my Greek internet connection - line keeps dropping randomly. Not surprisingly, COSMOTE have tested the line and all is well. My inkling is the router.

Now, would it make much difference if I reverted to Ethernet connection instead of WiFi?

If the routers wifi signal is the problem then, probably, if the router itself is at fault, probably not.

It could be the microfilters, make sure there is one in every telephone orofice, does the problem occur when somebody is using the land line? if so then it is definately the microfilter, if not then it could be a signal strength issue, does it drop off when sat right next to the router?

If it still disconnects then try hard wiring it first as its far more stable than any wifi anyway.

Test it by replacement, replace the microfilters first, then hard wire it, then replace the router.

It’s a brand new router - only installed a couple of days ago. My previous internet was OK but had a daily download limit of 6GB so I changed - that was via Ethernet cable and essentially mobile internet.

The new one is via the telephone line.

If the problem is just the actual line then I’m fucked.

Newly coonected Broadband can take a few days to settle to its operating speed, try connecting it by cable see if the problem persists.

If the problem carries on for more than 4 or 5 days when the cable is connected then there is a fault in the router, I have had several brand new routers that were faulty on installation, its not unknown.

Wired is still easily the fastest most reliable way to connect to a router if it is possible, so try that first.

As JJ says just because the router is new doesn't mean its good. Horlocks sounds like cable to me If its a cat 5 and not fibre which is likely, squirrels love em.

I’ve just installed an app called Speedify which boosts speeds and supposedly helps against internet drops.

The problem is it’s VPN based and although I can legally view iFollow in Greece the VPN is blocking the opening of the STFC app completely.

Have iFollow managed to outlaw the use of VPNs now?

Yes pretty much, they have blocked all commercially available VPNs.
