Title: Tonic alternatives
Post by: Flashheart on Friday, August 2, 2019, 19:58:54
I like gin, but there's as many calories in tonic water as there are in coke (not the white powdery type). My gut has been steadily expanding over the last few weeks, so it needs addressing before I turn spherical.

What else works? Orange juice? Something else?

Gin and Orange is a good one.

Depends how much you like gin, soda water and a squeeze of lime is fine for me as I can actually stand gin neat.

If that sounds a bit raw cranberry juice is a nice mixer for gin, I'd not recommend OJ myself but that is purely personal preference.

You could also go with some squeezed cucumber with fresh lemon and soda water, if you can find it out there a dash of elder-flower cordial with those is very popular.

A false dichotomy.

But I'd rather take the 2nd option.

Low calorie tonic water

Out of necessity I've tried Sprite Zero and it wasn't too bad (was worried you'd completely lose the Gin flavour), carbonated water and cucumber would probably be ok.  I am assuming you have the gin, otherwise some of the botanicals can be drunk neat easily enough.

I've just moved to slimline. Used to avoid it thinking it was a shitty diet coke like affair. Any decent tonic, fever tree seems to be the fave at the mo and ok, the slimline tends to be good too.

My other favourite is just to drink gin on it's own, save money on tonic and spend it on better gin.

Slimline tonic with lime flavouring is my pick.  Knocking the beer on the head has helped my lose a bit of belly.

I don't drink gin very often, but when I do I add it to my cider. Very tasty combination. Seriously, you have to try it.

got to go with KT on this one, gin has great flavours in it bit of fizzy water and you get all the taste the makers intended.
Hmmm tempted by cider though

Pink Lucozade zero.  Lovely, but possibly a bit girly? 😂

It's a thread about reducing calorie intake. I don't think "too girly" will be an issue :)

What’s the protocol when drinking flavoured vodka/gin?

I’ve been given a bottle of pear vodka. Does adding a mixer completely overpower the pear taste? Is it usually drunk neat with ice?

I'd drink it with a slimline tonic

I'd take that with crushed ice and soda, in a highball with sugar dust around the rim (oo-er). A wedge of pear pierced with a clove to garnish. Rest the clove end of the pear in the beverage and possibly drop a cardamom pod in, to suck on after. Much better than an olive for lasting infusion.

Or if that's too "girly". Ignore the rest and follow the first eight words. I'm a fan of a good Tom Collins myself. Except I garnish with Pear instead of orange.

Also it's preferential, some prefer the balance the bitter in tonic brings against the sweeter pear with vodka. if tonic is a must then definitely add sugar dust and those very brief sweet hits on every sip will open to a mellowed and bitter-but-smooth pearyness.

Enjoy.

I’m sipping one right now. Tried it neat over ice but is really nice with a small amount of tonic.

I went for soda and lemon juice eventually (for gin)

I think I prefer it to tonic.

Same FH. I prefer the more neutral element of Soda than tonic for most two part cocktails.

Question is, what's your ratio?
