Title: STFC v Man Utd XI
Post by: singingiiiffy on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, 10:22:14
Doesnt seem to be advertised very well but there is a game tonight and as much as I hate pre-season matches I do make it to one every season and tonight is the night.

Main eyes will be on town obviously and be good to see the new boys especially yates for me as such an important position for the season ahead.

A string of uniteds young boys have been breaking through and a lot are now with the first team squad but should be interesting to see the quality of their remaining under 23s as well. Future england players etc

Adult                                                £8

Over 65 / Student                           £5

Under 21                                          £5

Under 18                                          £5

Under 11                                          £2

Wheelchair / Disabled                      £5

It’ll give us a chance to see what system Wellens has plumped for - 3-5-2? - and the likely starting XI - obviously minus the raft of signings to come!

I look forward to finding out how far down the touchline the away dug out has been moved!

Title: Re: STFC v Man Utd XI
Post by: Peter Venkman on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, 10:43:05
If Wellens starts with his strongest side then he will go for

                 McCormick(Krastev)

        Baudrey Conroy Broadbent(Ballard)

Hunt(Reid)                                        Fryers

                           May (D'Ath)

Woolery           Doughty      Anderson (Isgrove)

                            Yates

As long as he doesn't put Conroy in front of the back 3 as that just doesn't work.

Attacking options are very limited at the moment. We are missing McGilp or Rose with injury too weakening options in midfield.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the most unreliable Rolex in the world is running again.
Wonder how much that cost.
Probably not a case of dropping it off at Deacons with a give us a shout when it's ready.

Pitch is looking splendid.

No big Bulgarian in evidence.

They had to have a cog specially made by Rolex apparently to fix it.

Isgrove, D'Ath and Newell?

Isgrove is pretty small with a blond hair crop and Newell is the spitting image of his old man, who I am sure you remember.

MANCHESTER UNITED U23s XI: Paul Woolston; Ethan Laird, George Tanner, Teden Mengi, Di’Shon Bernard, Ethan Hamilton, Aidy Barlow, Arnau Puigmal, D’Mani Mellor, Dylan Levitt, Largie Ramazani.

Isgrove was well off the pace vs Brum, sounds like he may have bedded in with the team a bit more now. Playing for a contract.

TBF its unusual to have a winger that is even 50% consitant, especially at this level. For that matter any player who is 50% consistant!

Thats why I would take Bennett back at a heatbeat.

Guess it's not to alert other clubs but then you'd think their names are touted around by agents anyway and in the age of Twitter etc keeping names secret doesn't really happen.

So...I don't know.

Disclaimer* This is preseason and means absolute fuck all:

We look spoilt for choice at CB. The two that started look decent and comfortable and that's without Conroy and Broadbent.

Yates was very quiet. Wooley was involved in the best chances- unlucky with a lot of blocked shots.

Doughty as per is a class above with his flicks and movement.

Isgrove- liked him a lot. Reminded me of a sammy Igoe in both looks and clever play. good goal as well. sign him up.

The last sub looked like a random dad had been pulled out the crowd.

Tyler Reid is a unit. Possibly filled with air and not muscle though but the way he was pushed off. not long enough on to make much impact.

Fryers looked good- overlapping pace will be a good asset.

No Conroy, no Keshi?

Still need that striker. speaking the obvious.

1st half all ball in their half. McCormac no saves.
2nd half all ball in ours but for counter attacks.

I know friendlies aren't competitive but bar the odd bad challenge didn't feel like much of a work out.

Thought Yates did a lot of the hard yards for Woolery though, plenty of dropping deep to receive etc

Yup
Isgrove- liked him a lot. Reminded me of a sammy Igoe in both looks and clever play. good goal as well. sign him up.
ha ha I couldn't help thinking of Igoe too, but thought that was maybe just because he was a short-arse, glad someone else had the same thought!

That aside, thought we looked pretty decent. Although I worry that we looked a good side against a team that came to play, rather than a good League 2 side necessarily. Enjoyable evening all in all

Sorry i meant in terms of being the goalscorer we crave- if he is even that type of player. I dont think he had an effort on goal- definitely cant fault his work rate. Maybe that was his instructions today to play as a a kind of 10 and work off woolery and supply him. Would be good to see him have a chance in front of goal to see him tuck it away.

I enjoyed that game. Couldn’t tell who most of them were but Doughty put himself about, isgrove looked quality. The No2 is a bit fucking lump, wouldn’t want to take him on in an eating or drinking contest. Inspite of the changes I thought we looked better than I can think of for a few seasons at this stage.

I have no idea- took me a while to piece together half the team. skinny unfootballer like legs, big mop of unfootballer like hair, ran around like a chicken and got booked for a lunge in a 10 minute cameo. definitely a trailist

edit* still not helpful but rules out other players.

Based on the adver lineup:

Swindon Town: Luke McCormick, Rob Hunt, Mathieu Baudry (Tyler Reid, 63’), Dan Ballard (Taylor Curran, 81’), Zeki Fryers (Tom Broadbent, 76’) , Michael Doughty (Trialist, 81’), Adam May (Jordan Lyden, 63’), Paul Anderson (Scott Twine, 76’), Lloyd Isgrove (Ellis Iandolo, 76’), Kaiyne Woolery (George Newell, 86’), Jerry Yates (Brandon Thomas-Asante, 76’).

Remains to be seen if they can gel into that "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" type team that is needed to make top three.

Isgrove. Impressed with the way he tracked back. Yeah, Sammy Igoe.

Asante might be worth a punt. A couple of cameos and is different to what we already have. Gets in the right areas but finishing needs to improve.

Only 3 from last season in the starting eleven. Says a lot.

Recruitment has been good.
Can see an overall improvement in quality.
Remains to be seen if they can gel into that "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" type team that is needed to make top three.

However we could have fielded 6 of the side that started v Notts, and if Bennett and Robinson return... 8 would represent some sort of welcome continuity.

I've been thinking about your "whole is greater" thing also.  Atm on the surface, I don't think we have the individuals who look like an auto side, so we have to hope that some sort of alchemy happens betwen those we've got and any that come in now.

When Wellens got to grips with things in the new year, we did show on occasions the makings of a decent side...wins at Franchise, Tranny, Bury standing out.....OK often we were also less than stellar, but sometimes the core of a side can be locked into an efficient whole by a couple of additions, and so transformed.  The 68/69 side had previously been inconsistent, it was the addition of John Smith as playmaker, that turned it into one of our finer sides.

There's little evidence that churning over entire sides each year is a good way of doing things.

We were not shit last season....it was a glimmer of light excluding the cup exit debacles.

We were quite good but not great and great sides win leagues or gain promotion.

A need to kick on is required.

Who was the random dad?
If he was tall and useless and runs around a lot then I would suggest Newell, who did the same vs Brum.

I agree, last season we were not shit at all, ok maybe 2 games under Wellens we were shit the rest we were not bad.

We just needed a striker who can score for us to kick on.

One of the first blokes out of the tunnel does look a lot like Anderson TBH.

Well nobody has commented how Anderson played so there is a good chance it was Tony Law if he didn't make much of an impression!

If he was tall and useless and runs around a lot then I would suggest Newell, who did the same vs Brum.

I'd assumed it was Newell, purely cos he looked like Mike Newell. Didn't see him against Brum but kind of felt for him a little bit last night - what are you supposed to do with a 5 min cameo at the end of a friendly (other than I guess, get the not so subtle hint about what your prospects of being signed are looking like)? So of course he ran round like a headless chicken, desperate to make an impact. Which he did on at least one Man Utd player.

FWIW, I thought he looked quite handy.

Yeah he is the spitting image of his old man, runs around and doesn't get near the ball a lot but was not put in a position in front of goal which could tell you even slightly how good a striker he is. All he did was chase the ball.

Cheers, very quiet about him on here.

I thought there were quite a few positive comments during the game (when I was switching between here and club Twitter in the hope one or the other would give me some clue as to who half the players were!) but may have been wrong. I may also be wrong that he looked quite handy as well tbf :)

Did Anderson play right wing and Isgrove left or visa versa?

Isgrove played the 1st half vs Brum as an out and out right winger and looked poor in that position....but could be wingers constancy curse!

Isgrove right. Anderson left. Both did well.

I'm assuming that the elusive striker, as and when he comes in, will be competing with Woolery for a place?
Woolery has done ok with playing back to goal and the occasional direct run, but end product needs to improve.
His pace will cause problems, but will Wellens be able to fit him in if a 'proper' striker comes in.

We were not shit last season....it was a glimmer of light excluding the cup exit debacles.

We were quite good but not great and great sides win leagues or gain promotion.

A need to kick on is required.

It's that need to kick on which is the elusive bit.... still 10 days til kick off, so a couple of strong signings could yet make a difference.

FWIW, I thought he looked quite handy.

As a footballer or a stand up comedian?

we were shit last year.
I watched all but 2 games last season and I thought we were actually "shit" in about 2 or 3 games, we couldn't score and let in a fair few soft goals, but the actual team performaces were not that shit.

The results were shit, our finishing was shit and our defending was shit at times but as a team we almost always looked capable of winning games right up until we missed an open goal or let in a soft goal from a corner.

We were bottlers last season. We'd go on a decent run, then every time it looked like we were going to get into the playoffs we started playing like a bunch of cunts. That would then leave the playoffs looking unlikely as we dropped away, and the cycle would repeat again.

I agree, last season we were not shit at all, ok maybe 2 games under Wellens we were shit the rest we were not bad.

We just needed a striker who can score for us to kick on.

Probably the two games I attended  :)

We certainly never looked a side that compete for promotion, but there were a few positives, and those, if possible, are what Wellens needs to build on.  The pre season started well enough, but the raft of trialists, has stalled that somewhat.
