Title: Swindon v Notts County pre match chat and match day thread

Ah well, last game of the season should see Notts retain league status. See they've sold over 1600 tickets. Might go to this, could prove interesting  :)

Macc lads at home to a poor side in Cambridge, but you never know, strange things happen in football.

I personally would prefer County to stay up and Sol Campbell get relegated.

GW Reds BBQ at the cricket ground
Quick butchers at the FiTC facility building
Football to say goodbye to Matt Taylor (and good riddance under my breath to others)
Fall asleep on sofa.

Sounds like a good Saturday

Not if Maccledfield win or even draw

An 8-0 County win would do it.

Well it will be the last time at least half the side that plays on Saturday will ever play for Swindon, if you dont want to sign for us then fuck off and don't come back.

Not a single player is bigger than the club so if you don't want to be part of it then bye, some are not good enough, some are ok but will be no loss and some should never have been signed in the first place.

TBH there is not a single player at the club who for me would be a massive loss if they did or do leave, I include Doughty in that.

While I agree, it just makes the job of recruiting that bit more difficult.

We don't want to be down to out 27th choice left back/centre back come August :)

Massive game. Not for us though. Biggest home attendance of the season?

Don't have a great deal of sympathy for Notts County the club.
They've been shit all season and probably a mess behind the scenes as well to get to this point.
Do have sympathy for their fans. A decent bunch and always a good day out up there.
The wheels have well and truly fallen off the wheelbarrow.

Hope we don't just roll over, but should get an idea of who is on RW's shit list.
Anyway, good opportunity to get rid of an opponent that could otherwise be challenging us for top spot next season.

I remember in 62, we had Yeovil in the cup one week at Huish and then Notts the following week at the CG. The Don had made his debut the week before Yeovil v Sarfend at the CG aged just about 17. He starred v Glovers and then scored his first goal v Notts.

Yeovil can go back to being non league giant killers, but it would be sad to see Notts go..... however, I don't think there's much room for sentiment, it's dog eat dog for us now as so few sides between us and the twilight zone.

Challenging us for a top spot? I'd rather they stay up so they make up 1of 2 of the shite teams next season. That way we might keep our league status. Where's a promo season coming from we've finished worse each year now for while, STFC a dying the death of a thousand cuts.

Oh come on Ken, cheer up and keep the faith.
If we don't get promoted next season, then I'll be running round your mansion with my willy hanging out.
A spare tin foil hat might be needed to cover what small modesty remains though.

Think I may feel a bit weird on Saturday, rather like attending a funeral where you didn't really know the person or care as much as other attendees.

It's ended as a real tease for them, mathematically still a last vestige of hope but not really.

Hopefully Swindon fans won't take the piss.

I suspect that some will.
Most might take on board that it could happen to us one day.

Look at Notts County, all it takes is a bad start, followed by a kneejerk sacking (where the hope is still promotion), appointment of an unsuitable replacement, then it just spirals out of control from there.

Looks like County will have the backing of around 2,200 fans today.

The poster doesn't state where the quote is from but I wouldn't be shocked if its the FB owner Walker who still thinks we are a bigger club than Cardiff...fucking idiot.

Quote
Notts are a tin pot club....by a Swindon fan
http://boards.footymad.net/showthread.php?t=38242631

Please Town fans attending do not take the piss if County are indeed relegated today, have a little respect and act like a grown up, it could quite easily be us in the same situation.

As for the game, I have a feeling it will be a low score(0-0 or 1-1) draw today in front of 8,245 fans with 2,221 County fans there.

Title: Re: Swindon v Notts County pre match chat and match day thread

County fans are extremely confident about getting a result today despite only having won 3 times in the last 13 games and only 1 of those wins being away from Meadow Lane.

LLDLWDLWDLLDW is the run of form.

They have the wosrt away record in the league with just 17 points picked up on their travels, with 4 wins and 5 draws from 22 games, scoring 24 but conceding a hefty 47 times, thats 8 more goals let in than any other team in the league.

We are pretty inept in scoring but obviously they are still a threat. But any win at Swindon by less than 8 goals will be worthless if Macclesfield get at least a draw at home to Cambridge today.

In the away match we easily beat them 2-1 in a crappy game under Brown, I doubt 4 of the starters back in OCtober will start today Vigs, Taylor, Lancashire, Nelson, Knoyle, Smith, Dunne, McCourt, Doughty, McGlashan and Richards.

In games at the CG Town have won the last 3 matches without conceding, we have won 22 of the 34 matches between the sides at the CG with County winning just 6 of them.

County have just 1 win in the last 10 meetings at Town with us winning 6 times scoring 19 times to Countys 4 goals.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to it and, ideally, I'd like to witness absolute bedlam.

I'm hopeful there are a few twists and turns. I expect Notts County to start frantically and fade away.

I'm looking for Notts County take the lead and Cambridge score at Macclesfield - madness in the away end and all that. Then news of an equaliser at Moss Rose and witnessing the deflated away end go through it all again.

This is all to justify the £23 entrance fee so I'd like a bit of drama, please. I've got zero issues with Notts County or Macclesfield but losing the former is a big deal historically. Good luck to them both.

I'd also like to see Matthew Taylor get a final goal, in the same way that we were rooting for McEveley to get one during his final game, but rather suspect that the Town End car park will be more at risk  :)

Marc Richards must also be thinking of calling time on his career too? 37 this summer.

Hope we get the chance to give Taylor a decent send off.
Hard work, dedication and sacrifice probably key to a very good career in MT's case. A modicum of talent as well, but not enough on its own.

Less chance of a rare sighting of LV at the final whistle though.
He might want to bid a fond farewell to the fans of the club that he "loves".

One advantage of L2 is that the season finishes at the traditional time on a Saturday.

Season after next, down a murky future timeline, could the see the last game a week earlier than what we've been used to.

I'm treating this like an away game.

with Taylor I always get the sense he's putting in 100% all the time.

Sometimes he's not good enough now his legs are going, but you can ask no more of him. Comes across as a model pro.

But forgot sentimentality  he should be in today on merit ahead of koiki .

I would play Koiki and give him one more try out, then bring Taylor on for his swansong for the last 10 to 15 mins.

Taylor is always trying but his legs won't allow any more. Thanks for a good season last year.

Some interesting coincidences today.... like Sol and Colin playing for Spurs together, I wonder if they got on?  Sol also played a game for Notts when Sven was gaffer and they were owned by Munto Finance, should probably have lost league status for that unsavoury episode. There may be others.

I'd like to see Macclesfield stay up.
Maybe their manager will get some credit if they do?

Paul Ince did the same from a similar position, with the same club, a few years back.
The next opportunity didn't work out though, so it's a case of making do as an occasional pundit, talking bollocks on MOTD.

Interesting that "Lamps" or "StevieG" haven't had to start their managerial careers in L2.

Notts County, if they get it right, can come back stronger after a spell in non-league.

The Duke of Banbury is in the house.

Last chance for Koiki as I suggested earlier, be nice for Taylor to come on to a standing ovation in his last appearance off the bench.

Lets hope our younger quicker players can exploit them.

I wish Doughty would chase a ball down after he is dispossessed rather than looking at the ref and putting his arms up in the air, which he must do 10 times ever match.

Woolery nice pass to Robinson inside the box but his shot is chased down.

Town putting them under pressure with a cross by Knoyle and then Koiki was pushed over and probably should have been a penalty but Koiki made the most of it.

Watched the penalty push on Koiki there was definate contact inside the box, the defender took Koikis legs away.

If he was going towards goal rather than away he would have given it, definate bad call by the ref though.

County look really poor and have no urgency in their attacking play, we look likely to break them down with every attack but alas our shooting is yet again well off the mark.

Fairly easily in control but really dull and very little quality.

The ref bottled it and it should have been a penallty on Koiki but thats all that Koiki has done all game and should go back to Burnley and learn how to tackle and cross in the Summer.

But that could just  be the way its coming accross on iFollow.

So what did we learn today?

Notts County showed the league that you can spunk a decent budget in this league and create a team of absolute shit.

Robinson is a tease - he is almost what we need, but maybe not quite, not when we need it most?  Useful though.

Woolery - one trick pony, can we get that trick played often enough?

Anderson - lots of tricks but a donkey when he puts his head up.  Head down creating circles around players he is classy.

Bennett - very hot and cold as a player, worth signing I think.   Better version of Anderson.

Doughty - not a central midfielder in a two man midfield.

Carroll - I'd have him back, but maybe the Aussie has something about him as well.

Koiki - too many rough edges to polish without having a more reliable left back in the squad.

Knoyle - competent - he does need work on his crossing, but he's ok for this level.

Conroy -steady, half decent pass on him at times, I still think he loses concentration too often to be first choice - I'd have Nelson alongside Broadbent who I think will be good next season.

McCormick - steady and we've had some flappers in recent years so I'll take that.

Bless Taylor, still has a wonderful left foot on him, shame the rest of the body has given up.  Done well for himself and fair play for dropping back down the leagues to keep pulling on a shirt.

Overall, this game summed up our season.  It wasn't great, we were playing some dross, we showed glimpses of something and plenty of nothing.

He looked like he was just trying to give County every chance to stay up until it was clearly beyond them, then started giving us a couple of soft free kicks as counterbalance.

Feel really sorry for the Notts County fans, no sympathy whatever for the team who got exactly what they deserved today and if they've played like that all season, what they deserve from the season. Real shame for the club though, much rather it was Macclesfield who are a proper non-league team

So what did we learn today?

Nothing much, that wasn't already known.... it does put the lid on a few things though.  I wouldn't say a disappointing season, as that would imply expectations in the first place.

So for example... the recruitment and pre season, seemed typical muddled, in keping with the Power era, suggestive of a vague hope for 7th place, rather than a strategy for winning the league.

That needs to change, and at least Wellens appears to recognise that, as to whether he can do anything about it is moot... I note the deadline for recruitment between Div 3 and 4 has been extended until the end of August for next year.

The home form continues to be an issue, to which Wellens hasn't fully found a convincing answer, even though the wins at Franchise, Bury, and Tranny were suggestive of perhaps a side developing, which proved a false dawn.

Back in Nov when PB went and Wellens came in, I flagged up how stats showed how difficult it is after about 17 games to move too many slots up the league... we were 17th and finished 13th, consistent with Wellens doing OK, and needed, Yeovil were just above us at the time.

Similarly going into the home straight of 10 games to go I pointed out how rare it is for Town sides to finsh strongly.... pointing out the mean acccumulation for even auto and PO sides is 17 points, skewed by the 20's of auto sides, the sort of numbers we'd need playing catch up... we got 14, again reflecting a mid table outfit.

Wellens confirmed the feeling that we just don't have the right sort of player to mount a serious challenge, although acknowledging as individuals they might have an occasional decent game... you need more than that.

THis is why Wellens threw his toys, going from building organically with the players who won at Franchise etc, to binning off anything that moved... at first it looked like perhaps a motivating tool to try and get a Newport style ending, only for it to backfire.

It will be interesting to see if Power shows any intent during the coming close/pre season.... it would be welcomed.

Nobody can really not admit that, on the whole, we’ve been shite all season. A few chinks of light soon snuffed out by another dire performance.

And yet, we finished 7 points outside the final PO spot. Very easy to look back at games where 1 point should have been 3 and 0 points should have been 1 - and I know a few clubs can probably say the same.

Even a slight improvement should see us there next season - although POs should be the minimum.

Glad of a 3 month break from it and I already feel next season should be the one.

In the scheme of things 7 points is a lot... as I pointed out above about final 10 games we got 14 points, so on that form if we had an extra 5 games we might bridge that sort of gap, if nobody else played.

Have to say I preferred it back in the day, when the season ended you could switch off for 6 or so weeks, focus on cricket and forget football.... now with social media etc, very difficult.

I remember back in the early days of MoS, wondering at season's end as to whether it could be kept going during the summer, due to lack of football.. yep, easy, lots of bollocks to spout.

Swindon fans can **** right off as well. We have no history with them, no rivalry whatsoever, and they celebrated Macc's goal like it mattered to them, and then taunted our fans. What a bunch of pricks.

TBH what did they expect? "come on County you can do it" said in a back slapping kind of way?

Paul Ince did the same at Macclesfield a few years ago, moved on to Franchise and then got found out when he took the Blackburn job.

It's a good start and admirable to drop to that level but a long way to go before he proves his managerial credentials.

Interestingly it raises a question that I have had over the years with a number of football fans from various clubs in different divisions. That being, could a pep or Jose type of high profile top tier manager in our country or any other European country make a success of being dumped into a bottom tier club at the bottom of their league and make a fist of it?

Don’t sing ‘Swindon’s a shit hole’ and then take offence when the game/games turn and you get given a bit back. It’s football, it happens, fans take the piss out of one another.
I thought their supporters starting a chant as the Roll of Honour was being read out was a pretty shit thing to do.  So fuck 'em, they deserved taunting.  They have gone down as over 46 games they were not good enough, spent a big wedge but its come back to bite them!  Hopefully they will be back in 2020-21, but we will be in a league above them by then . . . now where did I put my coat!!

also a bit of frustration at their penalty dive. Don't mind losing to them, but not by cheating.

As it is it made sod all different, I'm sorry they went instead of Mac but c'est la vie

Can we have a bit more about McGilp and Curran please? Not sure Curran was on the pitch long enough. But some of the comments about McGilp seemed positive.

er, I don't really remember much, so McGilp can't really have impressed me.

But then again first league game, can't really judge at all.

McGlip looked interesting, seemed a bit slow at times but won a few headers and played a couple of decent balls. Curran didn’t have enough time to make too much of an impression, apart from one moment where he stopped an attack on the edge of the box.

Did Power say anything interesting on the radio before the game?

As other have said McGilp appeared to have a bit of potential, although he may need to check up on the laws of the game!!  Their speedy right winger looked to be away but he caught him, run out of ideas and gave him an almighty shove in the back!!  Lucky not to get a yellow on debut.  Was it not him who burst into the area and was well placed, but saw Matty Taylor running into the box and tried to square it for a farewell goal?  Whoever it was would have been a nice gesture if it had come off.  Never really noticed Curran.  One of those two came from Brum if i remember correctly but where did the other come from?

I would say Pep could.  There is something about him.  I know he has had a silver platter served to him with teams but he takes it further.  Really good teams are scared of his teams with equal funding and he manages to get his team to dominate really good teams.

McGlip is worth another look.  Won every header he went for, looked to have a bit of drive about him, but too little time to make much of a judgement.  I thought Bennett was shit after 3 games, turns out he was great and shit in equal measure.

I liked the look of McGilp, he has pace hes a big unit and can tackle and also pass a bit, looked handy at this level to me, as for Curran hes a massive unit but didn't get anywhere near the ball when he came on.

McGilp I think will play next season in the Carroll role which he did fairly well for his debut, he made 2 decent defensive headers, set up 2 attacks with his passing and beat the rubbish Boldwijn for pace starting off 10 yards behind him at one point and took the man and ball out of play.

Definately bed him in gradually next season, must be about 6 foot 1 but fairly thin but certainly no lightweight, Curran is about 6 foot 1 too and a solid lump built more like Conroy than Woolf.

I thought Bennett was shit after 3 games, turns out he was great and shit in equal measure.
Exactly, he is the best player on the pitch at times and the worst at others, often in the same game.

Think McGilp was Brum and Curran Southend

Seems obvious that what did for us was the number of drawn games (16). Only lost 1 more game than MK and Tranmere.

There are different ways to look at drawn games and most of ours are those we should really have won - Yeovil, Oldham, Lincoln, Crawley all spring to mind.

Well you certainly got your drama.  Apart from madness in away end bit; they were pretty quiet although never easy to generate atmosphere on Stratton Bank.

We were the better of two poor teams.  Nice to see Taylor come on and get a good hand.  Left before end so don't know whether repeated at end.

Bizarre display from County.  At half time anyone unaware of their position would have assumed it was two mid table teams going through motions in end of season stroll.

Thought our penalty shout in first half was a definite foul.  No-one agreed with me at the time, probably because he made such a meal of it. Their's was soft but you could see there was an arm in the back.

Our second goal neatly encapsulated Notts County's season.  Great finish but comical defending.

Agree with PV & others re their outraged "how dare they take the piss!".  There were a few drunk town fans at corner of DRS really winding them up but basically they started it with the "Swindon shithole" bit.  And Nottingham is hardly the Florence of the East Midlands.

I wasn’t there yesterday so can’t comment, but the highlight of the day from a distance was seeing our good friend ‘Flitters’ bottle it.

Sincerely hope, and expect, that they will go on to fuck up the playoffs, and that, having pissed their mountains of cash up the wall, the smarmy prick gets exactly what he deserves.

the only problem with this season is that there is a real chance the village idiots across the boarder may go up .

hopefully they'll both blow it, still not been to fgr

Except that allowed Franchise to go up. Can't stand Flitcroft either, but at least Mansfield are a proper football club

they have a Flitcroft out thread, and they've not even failed in the playoffs.

not read it all, I don't think it's a majority. yet.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally against what happened at Wimbledon 15-20 years ago. But it was in no way specific to our club and, inevitably, is starting to wear thin now. We took 1,250+ there (myself included) for a routine game in early Feb - our biggest away following of the season. I’m sure we do have a few fans who are still principled enough to go to other venues and stay away from there, but there can’t be many now.

Flitcroft, on the other hand, saw fit, having overseen some abysmal football, to fuck off from our club... before moralising in the National media about how, I quote, ‘everyone wants things instantly now. There’s no respect for building or time. Nobody’s got any patience any more’.

Frankly, I’d prefer him to fail.

You are far from being alone, very very few Town fans would like him to succeed there.

My choice for play offs promotion would be Newport followed by Tranmere then FGR and then Mansfield.

Being a shit manager and rolling out a few crap soundbites doesn't even begin to compare to stealing a whole club. The fact it was 20 years ago makes no odds, wrong then, still wrong now.
