Title: Doughty doubts
Post by: sir windon on Saturday, April 27, 2019, 16:15:23
Despite being arguably our most talented player and under contract I reckon Wellens will be looking to get rid.

Arguably the best player in the division on his day. He's inconsistent, though, and prone to getting stroppy.

Not sure he's inconsistent per se. He comes back from injury and is usually crap. Then he gets better and better, reaches his peak which is pretty damn good. Then gets injured, and starts the cycle again.

Needs better players around him - he’s light years ahead of what we’ve got at the moment.

If Wellens wants new combative div 4 players, presumably on a reduced budget, selling Doughty may be the only answer?

So why would Wellens be looking to get rid?

Trains with the players once a week, is independently wealthy and football is basically a hobby. Good player as far as I am concerned but does he have the commitment really required to get us out of dvision 4?

To free up wages/ team berth(s) for the type of player(s) to get us out of this division, bearing in mind we are likely to have a reduced budget, as originally stated...

Its been quoted several times that he trains part time. Its also been rebuffed several times too. What is the truth here?

He's the only player under contract that another club would pay a transfer fee to sign.

I really struggle to believe it’s true. If it is, League Two is probably his limit..

Its also be quoted that he only signed for us because the club promised him a unicorn.

Probably Power planning for non league football... Doughty could become his Paul Doswell, at Suttton (although currently taking a break after 11 years)  Sutton are part time, but can hang about in the Conference, with the odd good cup run to generate funds. Doswell worked for free, as a wealthy chap, did it as a hobby. Further he personally funded things like their artificial pitch.

Sounds like Brexit - it would be undemocratic not to honor his entire contract.

Its nothing like brexit, there we're no unicorns promised or requested by anyone.
However in his contract, he insisted we give him a unicorn or he'll leave.
No unicorn no play, he's off now to another club insearch of his unicorn signing on fee.

I’ve said before that if Wellens wants us to be a high press all action unit then he’s best off binning doughty, as he’d never fit into that system

An awful lot of stuff to take available if you know where to get it.

He's going to Lincoln. I was speaking to his Aunt just last week (Exiled Bob knows of her I hear). Makes sense, isn't his family estate up there? No, I don't mean a Mondeo either.  :hmmm:

Bloody hell he is only 26, the way he is spoken about I always assumed that he was well into his 30's and coming to the end of his career.

Doughty style does not suit how Lincoln play, he would be a shit signing for them, he likes to play with the ball at his feet not 10 yards over his head.

I have heard that Sunderland are again watching Doughty as they were in the last transfer window when he was injured which stopped them making any offer.

Don't think so.....I knew a Claire Doughty at school. Is it her?

Have you got proof of this or are you going by certain people on that facebook group

He's a pro footballer playing in L2 cant see how he could or would be able to play if he only trained part time

Some in the Conference are part time... it's been a while since we beat a Conference side. Woking were part time... they beat us. There's not a massive difference between our players and players at that standard.... I'd have thought it would be easy enough to have one player part time in Div 4.

As originally stated in my previous post on this thread. May be conjecture but I'd imagine it's likely. The longer we are in this division, the less money I'd have thought would be available...

It was? Where? When?

So the quote should be "as I originally stated"

I do think it is fair to assume a small reduction - if we are truly spending to the limit allowed as a % of turnover in this division.  Unless we have alternative revenue coming, the attendances will be slightly down.  I suppose Power could add some money on the investment side and maybe add some optimism into the attendance numbers - the recent form won;t help that.

I think you could be right, season ticket sales will be down, especially with the company that providing the finance for season tickets getting into trouble themselves so there is no longer an option for spreading the cost over 10 months.
As for the investment I think this guy from Axis who has been doing all of the work on buying the ground may be pumping money in to fund the purchase and maybe even some of the money for the training ground, but that is just my opinion, as soon as the ground goes through then Power may sell it to him.

I’d also taken the appointment of Wellens as a sign of a move towards cheaper options and there is the small matter of Power coming to terms with the fact that he isn’t going to get any money for the outgoing goalie that he shelled out for a while back. I’d love to think we’ll see an increase in the budget to give us a better chance of success but see no reason to believe that will be the case. The sale of Doughty could bring in some dosh and relieve Wellens of a player that he may not ultimately “trust”, to quote his Whaddon Road post-mortem.
