Back to basics, on the day. There is still a glimmer of that murderous hope. 0-2 to Swindon Town FC.

Will be watching from a train between Hamburg and Berlin.

All I ask is for us to do enough this week to make Cambridge and Cheltenham worth going to. Think we'll get 4 points.

Not confident about this one. Think Amond is fit and he will put 2 nails in our play-off dream coffin.

2-0 Newport.

Be a nice bit of symmetry if the place that relegated us way back when could offer up 3 points to get us right in the PO mix.

1-2

Newport relegated us in 1981-82 I fear they will finally put the nail in any play off hopes this evening with their pitch being a great leveller.

Thier fans still think they will reach the play offs themselves and that we will be pretty much a walkover tonight, for that reason alone.....

Swindon 3-0 Yeovil with Anderson, Robinson and Woolf scoring in front of 3,651 with 625 hopeful Town fans there.

Pre match hoping for Union, Prudence & Energy in the Pen and Wig, just up the road from the Westgate Hotel, where the Chartist Rising was greeted by the whiff of musket fire to deadly effect on that fateful day in Nov 1839.

Our occasional forays into Europe are always enjoyable, relegation aside.
After last season, doing a double over this lot would be good.
Win the game and then see what Macclesfield are up to.
After tonight, it's either very much game on, or ho hum another season in L2.

Pubs in the centre all open at 10.00, a bit of Boney M on the jukebox.
What's not to like.

These next 2 games are very dangerous for Wellens.... lose both and we're likely back into the bottom half, and with Whaddon Road to come, could easily finish below Chetnumb for the first time ever when in the same league.

That scenario would not be good.... another season of decline under Power, leaving less wriggle room to the Conference trapdoor.

These are difficult games at the best of times, but with the squad likely to be on the beach after Saturday, it will be a test of Wellens motivational powers.

A draw would be an impressive outcome, and keep Newport below us.

Late season 3 away game trots, reminds me of 78/79, when we ende up with visits to Griffin Park, Hillsborough and Bloomfield Road win the lot and we win the league...2 wins and a draw and it's autos. We win the first at Griffin Park, with probably 6000 travelling Town fans, on the Tuesday, then lose at Hillsborough on the Friday 2-1, which finishes it.  :(

Apparently we have sold 538 tickets as of yesterday evening, thats not a bad turn out for an away game in europe (thanks for that WB) :)

If we do indeed pull off a win, against all the odds then the dream of a play off is well and truly still on, if we don't win then for me thats it even though its still mathematically possible I think it will be over.

The pitch is notoriously shit and even Man City struggled to play decent football on it. I personally would like House given a go instead of Robinson after his "in front of goal" performance at the weekend.

At least our defence will be bolstered by the return of Lancashire (!!!!) and I feel Doughty will probably start the game at the expense of Anderson, Woolery or Bennett.

Have you always been pessimistic Reg or has it got worse with age?

I look at the league table, some of the upcoming fixtures, involving us and others, look at what seems to be happening in terms of squad, available players etc. Then how morale and motivation might be in terms of the time of year, contracts etc.

I note that Newport are very strong at home possibly partly because of the poor pitch, and that a win for them and their other game in hand could pitch them up into the PO's.... a long shot, but one which may motivate them.  Further we haven't really done Tuesday night away games for a while.... recently Stevenage, a prime example, by a long way our worst performance under Wellens.

I then consider the recent debate about how well Wellens has done in the circumstances, and I think everybody feels he has credit in the bank... however football being football, you can never stand still.  It kind of highlights those who a while back were saying season over, because we were likely to come up short of the PO's, but not so these are important games.

That credit can only be retained by getting decent results, hence the danger in these 2 fixtures, and tonight a draw would be a very decent result.

As I explained looking at the circumstances, it's hard to make out a solid case for a victory.... of course it could happen, we have done well at home specialists like Tranny, Bury and Franchise.... however those were Saturday games played on decent enough pitches.

So is your prediction a defeat tonight then?

For the record I’m going 2-2. Think it’s a tough game but as you have said we have a good away record this season. Wouldn’t be a surprise if we come away with a hard fought victory though that puts us right back in the PO picture again.

Shame about the Yeovil result in the end, however we look as good as we have done this season and have shown we are capable of winning against anyone in this division, and a case can be made just as easily for win as for a defeat.
Were good enough to win tonight.

Interesting fact, fact fans.  Given Reg pointed out Newport's home form, their last 6 home games in the league have seen them win 3, draw 2 and lose 1.  That's worse than our home form over the same stretch.  I am pretty sure our away form is better than their home form for the same period of games as well.  It's a mathematical certainty that we will win!

In reality, tough game to call.  They will push for a win in their situation, we seem to do well against teams who do so when we play away.  I didn't think we'd beat any of Franchise, Bury or Tranmere but we beat the lot and played well.  I thought we'd beat Yeovil but we bottled it.  Who knows?  Probably 1-1 with hope gradually being snuffed out but still a small glimmer.

A quote from the Newport forum about tonights game....

Quote
We owe Swindon they mugged us down there.

I don't remember that being the case at all I thought Newport were pretty poor against us in a strong wind.

Also they had to get in the jibe,  2 can play the stereotypical insult game, sheep shagging fuckwit.

Quote
Swinetown players have over 'normal footballers' eg. a keeper benefitting from having 6 fingers on each hand, throw-ins hurled by webbed hands, the strong camaraderie within their team given their inter-familial links (each will play alongside their cousins, sisters etc).

Shoddy stereotypical insults based upon a place are pretty pathetic, hence my ironic reply.

It's anything but like Saturday, trust me!

We are the team creating the better chances, that's for sure.  Mostly looking good when running at them.

They are offering far more threat though.

The pitch is diabolical.  You can see how Newport do well at home, they don't bother using it very much.  There is a section that was in their right back slot in that first half where at least three players seemed to actually get their boot stuck in the ground, one of them falling over while clearing the ball under no pressure.

This one could go either way, we look most likely to score, but I wouldn't bank on them not getting a chance or two either.

We were by far the better team, especially in the 2nd half. I said it Saturday and I'll say it again... we'll be deadly if we had a poacher. Robinson's a good player but he shows to often why he's never been prolific in his career.

Still, gained a point. 3 points adrift and 5 games to go.

Absolutely. 15 points still to play for its still game on however unlikely the play offs may seem.

I just don't get some posters on here saying they don't think we need a poacher/goal scorer, I would say Ajose would have scored 30+ this season in this team.

Good point but should have been more. We're a Striker short of a very decent side. Bennett was excellent again and Keshi was the best player on the pitch by a country mile. Assuming we've all moved on from expecting him to be a goal-scoring Striker, he's a really big player for us right now and is much more effective under RW.

Still in it, just about, but could do with a win Saturday to really put the pressure on.

best I've seen Anderson play for ages. Couldn't have done much more really.

As PV said, Bennett was good too.

do feel we occasionally overplay when a shots on, but that was an impressive performance in the second half.

deserved more.

I've been proven wrong many time this year, but I think anything but a win Saturday kills it. especially as it would put Oldham above us with a game in hand. Our GD puts us at a points disadvantage.

But what a turn around to be taking of playoffs heading towards Easter

Hard to be critical really. Again a case of so close but still just outside where we want to be. Maybe by game 46 we'll have smashed down that barrier and forced our way finally into the top 7 when it counts.

Massive fan of Wellens and what he's trying to do here. Next season should be good but it'll be a long summer if we miss out on the play offs by a point or two.

Saturday will be tough. Oldham have won 3 on the bounce, however we are more than a match for them and can go there confident of the win we need.

Think you'll find Carrol was booked for re-entering the field of play without the refs permission. Left the field then hobbled back on when he realised the substitution hadn't been made and we were down to 10. Should get the refs permission first (you see the ref waiving players back on.

On paper, that's a very good draw at a tough place to go. Polar opposite of Saturday, which was a horrific result against a poor opponent.

Realistically I think there are 7 teams now shooting for 2 play-off spots. We have 3 away games on the spin and the match with Oldham is crucial if we want to play a part. Our away form is good and so I'm quietly confident we might get something at Boundary Park.

FGR v Exeter on the last game could be huge and could be beneficial for us.

Well, you can't be too tough after that, great effort considering the conditions and opposition.  It's a shame we fucked the first half of the season up really.

Going into last night we'd played 40 games, so let's consider what it looked like after 20 games... we were 12th on 27, now 10th on 59, so we've added on an extra 5 points from that first half, which has gained us 2 league places upward.  That feels about right, an improvement, but not by enough to fully get in the mix.

You can probably say atm that we messed up by being unable to beat Yeovil and losing to Crawley at the CG..... both may be going to the Conference.   Crawley have to go to Yeovil, and host Notts.

A few comments from the Newport forum about the game....

Quote
Their Number 10 (Anderson ?) was immense tonight a ripped us apart with his pace .
We just looked laboured and predictable and the long throw ins just summed us up .
Lucky to get away with the 0-0

We looked decent before Matt went off, after that we lost all our shape and were woeful.
That's two games on the trot that we could and should have won but inept tactics and performances let us down badly.

I thought Saturday was dour, but after we lost Jamille Matt, and Joss Labadie, tonight became dire, no shape, and apart from the defence, we looked bereft of ideas, and were very lucky to get a point!

Fair result tonight. Ball just didn’t drop right for Amond, Azeez was giving it everything but Swindon were so quick to close down he didn’t a second on the ball. And we should have had a penalty for handball. Darren Ferguson was at the game... wonder who he was looking at? Swindon no 10?

Taken in isolation the 2 draws v Tranmere and Swindon are 2 good points gained. Clearly not what we need now but two of the better sides in the division. Swindon in particular passed it about well last night and have serious pace and good options up top.

My main takeaway was that if either of those sides think they’re good enough to win promotion from Div 4, they’re deluded. Two strong, physical, direct but ultimately limited teams without any variety or nuance to their play. They’d both get hammered week-in, week-out in Div 3.

Lucky to get a draw in my opinion, so definitely a point gained. Felt like a training match atmosphere-wise, where the 3,300 crowd figure came from I've no idea. Felt a lot less than that.

Tbh I thought the pitch looked a lot better last night. I sit Bisley side and looked pretty good - is there a bare ish patch, Hazel Side, about 40 yards in front of dugouts ?? Considering Swindon knocked it about well enough.

And a report thats pretty biased in favour of the home side, concentraiting on only the Newport positives and almost entirely lacking basic school level punctuation, would some new paragraphs kill you?

Macc have lost 2 in 10, whereas Yeovil before Sat had avoided defeat twice in 13.

We know from long experience, it's the sort of thing that happens.  Of course, the fact that over a long time of supporting you can see certain things are likely to happen doesn't mean they will.... however it does add to the interest.

It is certainly going to be an interesting run in, our own play off hopes are still alive right up to the point that its mathematically impossible, which could well be the last game of the season.

The problem is and why it's not really worth thinking too much about, is the mathematical imposibilty stuff, relies on outcomes which are highly unlikely, hence we could now be in a PO slot had we beaten both Yeovil and Newport.  However that would have given us 4 wins on the spin, the sort of thing we haven't managed this season.  Of course, as mentioned above because something looks unlikely based on experience, doesn't mean it cannot happen, but there does tend to be a discernible reason for these outcomes and in our case, you can see we're not good enough and haven't been good enough to mount a proper campaign for playing at a higher level, throughout the season.... hence midtable.

Wellens has earned the right to have a go next season, and if he is provided with the necessary support by Power, perhaps we can start to move upwards.

Interestingly this type of reasoning didn't seem to apply earlier in the season when we were 8 and even 10 points above the drop zone. We were constantly being told to think about things then (even though there was little possibility of us going down). Is there a reason why the same reasoning doesn't work when looking upwards rather than downwards?

It would also be useful to understand which positions in the league equate to "midtable".

Thank you! I'm always learning :-)

It's a fair question and I guess the answer is that our recent history has shown more downward than upward momentum which induces that sinking feeling.

The period to which you aver, was probably the 9 game run in the autumn, where we had 1 win and only scored 3 goals.  That the looking downward feel was justified, was confirmed by Power sacking Brown, and then Wellens stating in that podcast interview after the Carlisle game.... hello we could be in trouble here.

24 team league.... 1-8 top third.... 9-16 mid table... 17-24 where you don't want to be.  We were 18th after 18 games.

"We never get more points in the 2nd half of the season than the 1st half..."

So far we have got 31pts after 23 games and currently have 28pts with 15 available. I know we will end up on more.

As for form teams, while Oldham are on a "three wins on the spin" form, we are unbeaten in the last 5. A stat that only league leaders Lincoln can boast as well currently. Teams clearly have noticed we are a threat and are setting themselves up accordingly to engage damage limitation. They saw the 4-0 and 3-1 convincing wins. Point in case, with Yeovil doing a good job of keeping us from scoring a shed load (also Robbo being a bit barn door didn't help) and last night Newport set up purely for a point, with no real game except to lump it in the air and stall fluidity of the match. Credit, they managed to do it. They win no prizes though. We were the team trying to get in the POs, they were the team content with L2 mid table.

This is good. Teams are actually fearing us, they know we have pace and can't do a lot about it, other than park the bus or risk playing at us with an inevitable counter attack ending in us scoring. The mindset of some teams against us is not so much "how can we stop them"  but hoping that our front three are having a bit of an off game (see Theo).

I fully expect us to beat Oldham (another Manchester club ticked off for Wellens) and possibly shockingly so (to Oldham fans).

The way I see it, we could be in for final day heartbreak. potentially needing a win. Getting that win but also FVR & Exeter only needing a point. We'll finish 8th (joint 6th) on GD and we'll all be thinking of individual games where "if only". Yeovil will be fresh in the mind with that last kick equaliser and we'll be pretty fucking miffed.

The positive will be, we will largely have a squad gelled and ready for next season, a few tweaks and targeted new additions and should make for a great promotion campaign. Reg will be happy we have secured our Football League status (officially) and can then begin the cyclical process all over again.

All in all, a decent season. One many didn't expect to be as interesting in say November. We have a decent and developing manager in Wellens. Let's hold on to him for as long as possible. But first, let us give these last five games a real good go! C.O.Y.R!

Newport were shite, dreadful hoof ball mixed with cynical fouls and diving. A poor advert for the league when they are in the top half

If we'd got the same points haul from the first 20 as the next 20 we'd be in the play offs.

Fair do's. Given this reasoning you presumably got caught out in the the early 90's looking at the European places in the Prem and all of a sudden we ended up going down, given our upward momentum at the time to that point of course. :-)

We've been mid table virtually all season then.

Stood on the terracing  v Darlo in 83/84, along with 1680 other souls I knew that one day we'd make the top flight.... I'd seen what the club was capable of when getting things more right than wrong.  However when it happened a giant spanner was thrown into the works.

I'm not sure another club has had anything like it. And although we shortly took our rightful place, it was pretty obvious we weren't really prepared for the way football was going, so no surprise that we've struggled a bit since.

Yes, mid table, although slipping to 18th briefly was the lowest place we've occupied in our history after a significant number of games.

As things stnd atm, getting back to a steady Div 3 club is about the limit of our ambition, and that's proving difficult under Power's sustainable model.

You've not always been a pessimistic bugger then? In a season we FINISHED THE SEASON only one place higher than the 18th place you consistently refer to, you seriously thought we would be playing top flight football one day? Bloody happy clapper. :-)

I said that my expectation of top flight was based on what I'd seen... I started properly in 62/63, when Swindon was a proper football town, as it had been from the days of Harold Fleming etc.

83/84 seemed grim, but it reflected the times... the start of full on Thatcherism, the ramping up of the Cold War, and with it the deployment of cruise missiles, not far from Town. It was only a few years earlier that we reached a LC semi final and got so close to another final and coukld still pull out 20,000+ crowds at the CG.  That season although our lowest ever, still managed a cup run, to raise spirits, what Town specialised in.  It was the reason why I knew that one day we'd make it. Now I'm much more realistic, although there is still latent potential at the club, what it might lead to has to be more measured.

Oldham are indeed the form team in the league with 3 straight wins.
As a further point to this stat.

In our league only Lincoln, Swindon and Macclesfield can boast being unbeaten in the last 5 games, us and Macc 2 wins 3 draws and Lincoln 3 wins 2 draws.

Maccs have FGR on Saturday.

I was one of those 1,600 odd Town fans there that day and I thought at the time how far we had fallen and how long it could take to get back up even 1 division higher, at no point did I ever think that within 6 years we would be promoted to the top flight (only to be demoted). I was stood for that game with long suffering Town fan Rob Hartley for that game too, having little idea that was very near the start of his 1,700 odd game run.

TBH I used to enjoy football back then more than I do now despite the lowly gates and crap teams playing crap football there was a real togetherness of the faithful fans. I was at Chester with about 30 other Town fans on a wet Wednesday that season in a crowd of 880, which I think is the lowest league crowd post war to watch a Town league game.

Circumstances can change so quickly in football and all it takes is that small spark of good management which appointing Macari was and I hope appointing Wellens will be even half as successful.

I think you mean the Northern Echo Arena......

They get around 1-1.5k I think, which in a 25K seater isn't going to be great, although in a Jed McCroryesq twist whilst the stadium can seat 25k they can only actually sell 10k tickets for games due to planning issues with access.

The whole history of the development of the bomb, Britain's research into nuclear fission and then the desire for an independent weapon is fascinating....

I can just about remember the fuss when Klaus Fuchs was released from prison, although too young to understand what it was all about.

Churchill gave away all our research to the Americans..... it was the Atlee government who insisted we had an independent deterent, although post war the country could scarce afford it.

We ended up with the V bombers, and I know there are a few fans of the Vulcan on here... Batch?  There is an interestingish exhibition of paintings by local artist David Bent in Bath Road atm..... which includes a painting of a Vulcan whcih might or might not get the juices going in a Vulcanologist.

TBF back then me and some mates used to drive up from Swindon just to witness it, we didn't abuse them but watched them with some revultion at the time as teenagers.

We would often go on a Friday for a drive, go round the perimitter and stare a bit and get repulsed by the awful stench, which genuinely was stomach churning.

To this day I could not tell you why we did that, we did nothing while we were there and like Sutton I am not proud of it but still we did it and I don't know why. I guess it was just human nature of going to see how the other half lived. Rubbernecking as it were.

That brixton show was directly after Id been on there as a production manager for enter shikari.  The pistols turned up for a meeting whilst I was there where Johnny Rotten spat on the floor, drank becks and smoked in the venue.  Our lighting designer was also doing the pistols and was telling about phonecalls he was getting at 2am from Johnny rotten saying - I want all the lights to be black.  Mad bastard.

They ended up not using the one good idea they had - a backdrop like famous queen stamp with a safety pin through her nose but replacing her with Diana.
