I'd like to win. It annoys me that clubs who are always financially fucked like Bolton and Bury, still seem to do better than us when they go down, by seemingly carrying on spending money they don't have.

Even more annoying with Bury is their new owner says he's not particularly worried about going up this season, as although occupying our mid table Div 3 perch is the aim, it can wait.

The home defeat earlier in the season was one of a handful of truly abysmal performances. Can’t believe we’ll be as shite this time round.

We’ve usually done well against the better, footballing teams. This is the sort of game we’ll win to get the PO bandwagon rolling until the inevitable home defeat next week!

Tend to agree.

The home performance was a shocker but Bury were quite good opponents to be fair.

Glad to hear you'll be sporting an STFC shirt watching online.  Look forward to hearing about Argostoli Town too - hopefully they don't play in yellow and blue ;)

It has to be cash on the gate at Gigg Lane. They can’t process card payments. Also, ATMs are thin on the ground in the area.

Bury are unbeaten in 14 league games their fans are over confident and probably rightly so, they are 2nd in the table and it should be a home banker. In the home game they beat us 2-1 it could have gone either way and Bury were nothing special at all but we were poor in front of goal and playing poorly under Brown at the time, we had Dunne at RB and a few changes in the side, they looked easily beatable though.

We are a very different kettle of fish now than we were back then.

If we can create chances like we did last week then we could easily beat them, keep Maynard quiet and we will win.

Swindon 3-0 Bury with Anderson, Robinson and Woolf scoring in front of 4,051 with 485 Town fans there.

I’m back down the cottage this morning for my drop of Premier League football.

As for the big game, can’t see us getting anything at Bury, reckon we’ll lose 3-1 but more than happy to be proved very wrong!!

Pre match can we shake The Shakers in the Art Picture House.
An early day motion is seeing meaningful pint no 1 approved without opposition.

An unexpected victory today with our heroic warriors trudging off the pitch after a bloody offal and tripe soaked encounter.
Bury's cause being hampered by Carroll managing to accidentally poke all of their forwards in the eye during the course of an all action display of random arm waving and pointing.

Had forgotten about Neville Neville.  :)
It's not a bad little ground.
Looks as if the far end is shut though.
Saving money that they didn't have in the first place I guess.

Had forgotten about Neville Neville.  :)

    Neville Neville, they're in defence
    Neville Neville, their future's immense
Neville Neville, they ain't half bad
Neville Neville, the name of their dad

Bury were in lots of financial problems not too long ago taking out loans based upon promotions etc that nearly cost them heavily when they were relegated last season.

Pretty sure they are living well beyond their means this season again, Maynard, Mayer, Danns and Murphy all on high wages for this division and 3 loanees on decent wages as well at their parent clubs Rangers, Sheff Utd and Blackburn.

Talking of Joe Murphy, he has only ever kept 1 clean sheet in goal against us in his 10 games played and conceded 21 times.

Also he has only ever been on a winning side against us twice ever.

What a cracking game of football so far.  We look really dangerous, getting real joy down both wings with pace.  They equally look a threat, as you'd expect.

Can't really fault anyone in that half.  Trying lots, so you will get misplaced passes, but better to roll the dice and die trying I think, it's not like we have anything to lose.

Title: Re: Bury v Swindon pre match chat and match day thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, March 30, 2019, 15:58:16
Woolery is an absolutely handful that Bury can't cope with, Knoyle playing great down the wing too as is Koiki, Bennett playing well too apart from his free kicks, Rose pushing Woolery for MoM IMO hes running midfield, Carroll linking up well as is Anderson who is breaking with pace.

Robinson not getting the service how he wants it but is doing what he does well. Woolf and Conroy are (in the main) totally in control and McCormick handling every well and was not really at fault for the goal at all.

Town deserve to be a goal up but I just hope we keep pressing them as we have, we have played really well and we look like the team higher in the table so far.

- Bennett dived before the keeper touched him

From the Shakers forum.

Quote
Swindon good going forward, pace out wide unsurprisingly causing us issues.  For me, best team we've played against for a long time, they have good tactics and focused on our weak areas, getting the ball out wide quickly.  Its going to be a hard second half.  Attacking wise  weve only threatened a little, need to be moving the ball quicker and getting Mayor in positions were he can cause damage.

I concur, I just watched them again, Woolf was pulled back and that was a pen, Couldnt really see for their goal if he was level or not but Bennett did seem to fall before the keeper got to him.

Woolery playing more central than he has been lately, not running the channels as much as through the middle. Hes also still winning a fair few headers.

Well I almost got all that right! Have some faith gentlemen.

4 points off the play offs with a game in hand of FGR.

Game on!

What a little cracker jack of a performance.  Even Bennett looked like a footballer today, he might win me over if he can play like that and keep getting the luck with his shots as well.

Wellens really does have us looking good against the teams that attack us - great counter attacking football, but equally we can control possession when needed.  Rose is a classy footballer for this level.

Bit of luck with Mayor reacting, we must be on for some sort of record of red cards in our games this season.

Woolery was a real handful and Robinson does a lot of dirty work so it starts to look very impressive when a player or two comes on form around him.  And mention it quietly, but we might have solved our defensive frailties.  The central three we can pick from right now are solid.  Hopefully we get someone in like Nelson if Woolfenden is retained by Ipswich for next season.  Reckon Koiki could be a very good player next season if we can get him on a season long loan as well.

Well done Wellens and the lads, good to put Bury in thier place, and I daresay as a Manc, it might mean a bit to Wellens.

However today was a free hit, so we could play without pressure, so still not worth considering a PO finish as a bit of pressure now comes on and we haven't shown any capability of dealing with that yet.

Yeovil never park the bus they always come out to attack which will work in our favour, they had the same amount of shots today (8 ) as Newport and 55% possession, last week away at MKD they had 11 shots and against Macclesfield they had 12 shots, they are not a defensive side at all and also not very good at defending!

Its definately an interesting position to be in, if...and its a massive IF we can win all our remaining games then we will get into the play off, and obviously win it!

2017/18 season 75 points was enough for the PO's.
2016/17 season 70 points was enough.
2015/16 season 75 points was enough.
2014/15 season 71 points was enough.
2013/14 season 71 points was enough.
2012/13 season 69 points was enough.
2011/12 season 72 points was enough.
2010/11 season 69 points was enough.

Making the average points to get into the play offs in this division as 71.

To get to 72 points we would need to win 5 of our last 7 matches.

Its probably down to 6 teams for the last 2 places in the play offs, FGR(79 max), Exeter(82 max), Col U(78 max), Newport(79 max), Swindon(78 max) and Carlisle(76 max).

These are the games left to play for those 6 clubs -

FGR remaining fixtures
Crawley (20th) A
Macclesfield (24th) H
Tranmere (5th) A
Cambridge (21st) H
Crewe (13th) A
Exeter (7th) H

Exeter remaining fixtures
Cheltenham (16th) A
Macclesfield (24th) A
Port Vale (19th) H
Crawley (20th) H
Stevenage (12th) A
Oldham (15th) H
FGR (6th) A

Colchester remaining fixtures
Oldham (15th) H
Bury (3rd) A
Grimsby (17th) H
Yeovil (22nd) A
MKD (2nd) H
Lincoln (1st) A

Newport remaining fixtures
Tranmere (5th) H
Swindon (10th) H
Cambridge (21st) A
Bury (3rd) H
Macclesfield (24th) A
Lincoln (1st) H
Oldham (14th) H
Morecambe (18th) A

Carlisle remaining fixtures
Bury (3rd) H
Stevenage (12th) A
Lincoln (1st) H
Grimsby (17th) A
Crawley (20th) H
Yeovil (22nd) A

Our last 7 matches are -

Yeovil (22nd) H
Newport (11th) A
Oldham (15th) A
Cambridge (21st) A
Crewe (13th) H
Cheltenham (16th) A
Notts C (23rd) H

All of those games are definately winnable with only Newport of those realistically in with a chance of the playoffs still and only Yeovil and Notts County vying for relegation.

It all makes for an interesting last month of the season.

Although you would have to be THE most optimistic Town fan to actually truly believe that we will make it there.

Some very gracious comments on the Shakers froum after the game.

Quote
The players have looked "leggy" for a while.  We paid for it today.  Swindon were quicker, fitter and stronger than us.  They also exploited our defensive weakness - Rossiter was drawn out of position on numerous occasions, thus leaving a gap which was duly exploited.  The tackle which led to Mayor's reaction was awful but his selfish reaction could have a significant bearing upon the season.

It would help if the fans who abused McCormick had got behind the team instead.

Swindon looked a very decent side on that performance blistering pace going forward and skill on the ball. Our defence looked vulnerable every time they attacked.  I'm not going to criticize because we have been excellent at home.

Swindon distributed well, and fast.

it wasn’t disgraceful.  It was actually the best we’ve played in the last three games.  Sometimes you have to realise the opposition are good, I haven’t seen every match this season but for me they are the best I’ve seen against us. In the second half we were the better team until they scored, had we put away one of the two or three chances at that point if would have been a different result I think.

Bad day at the office, but Swindon were worthy , and comfortable winners.  As well as they played though, all 3 goals conceded were very poor.

Swindon deserved the win and how they are not up at the top end is somewhat baffling. Their number 22 caused us problems all game, one of the best forwards I’ve seen at Gigg this season.

Well played Swindon though, Woolery was immense.

Swindon had pace and exploited spaces in our defence on the counter. You have to wonder why they are not higher up in the league - like top - after that performance.

Fair play to Swindon who were excellent on and off the ball and did the dirty at times to frustrate us. Kicks and chops and pulls. Enough to send anybody over the edge - and it did! It was a nasty challenge on Mayor but he's had a fair few this season and handled them well for the most part. Don't think he would have reacted like that had we not been chasing the game or been offered more protection. Still, Swindon needed absolute gifts to twice get into the lead they deserved.

Beaten by the better side.
We tried today, as we always do, but we were beaten by a decent side.

mistakes and us being forced to be second best by a decent, improving side.
Swindon did their homework and decided just to basically attack us. They had at least 5 if not six players in the box on most attacks.

They did a great job on us, helped by quick players suitable for their tactics. Not every side between now and the finale will have those strengths though.

most teams have come and defended but they didnt. I think if we had one up front today and danns as an extra midfield man we could have won but who could predict that? just one of them games!

Out-thought, out-muscled, out-battled and out-played.

Certainly Welens has improved results somewhat, but interestingly your list breaks down handily into 7 game segments and we've 7 games left what it shows is that over 7 game segments we're good for 11 points, which would finish off on 68 points the same as last season.

Interesting.

At the same point last season we were on 61 points (4 points better off and 1 place higher in the table than now) and 3 points off 7th place with no game in hand.

Last season though we only won 4 of our last 17 fixtures and were more on decline than we are now.

Last season we were in a handy spot when Flitcroft bailed, and consequently tailed off.... if we did finish this season on 68, it would represent a steady second half, after an iffy start. Which would feel about right... perhaps it would be fitting to get 69 points.

69 would feel apt but 78 would be better ;)

There is a sequence of 7 games in those 22  that gave us 14 points.

If you chalk off the Carlisle home game, you get 21 games and segments of 7 yielding 12,13 and the most recent 11, so an average of 12 points... which would give us the magic 69  :)  Better than last seson.

Two things stand out for me today:
1) I think that's the first time we've beaten 10 men all season - we've previously had 4 games where the oppo have had players sent off and drawn all of them
2) There's signs that Wellens seems to be finding the player in Woolery. If he can sustain that, he could be a real threat next season, especially if we can keep Robinson (or replace him well)

Thanks PV.  Have been out.  Harboured hopes but reading through the thread input has been a fantastic pleasure.  We have put in some really big performances away from home - the team seem to have taken a real step forward under Wellens with so many individual seeming to grow into their potential.  A beautiful club and a beautiful read everyone. :pint:

Great win today. If only we could sort our home form out.

1) I’m not 100% but am I right in thinking in those other 4 games we have never been winning when the red card was issued? Always easier that way round and they don’t dig in.

2) I do like Woolery a lot, his last few games have shown what a threat he can be and if he can do it for the remaining games we do have a real chance.

For me it’s all about chasing down Forest Green, same target as another 3/4 teams. The game in hand gives a lot of false hope as when I look at the table I assume we have the 3 points. Sooner that’s out the way the better.

Great win.
Wellens currently has a success rate equal to Hoddle according to this

At the very worst its impetus for next season. I think we've beaten the top four away now which is pretty amazing.
Unfortunately not,  got beat 4-1 at Lincoln, drew  0-0 at Mansfield but have won at four of the top six - still not bad.

It's very good.... however offset by only beating 2 of the current bottom half of the table at the CG, we've still got 3 to go.

It's one of those things... teams often can win a game when the pitch is good, weather is good, and they're focused by playing a top side in the league.... but can't grind out that win when things are against. That's Wellens' challenge for next season, graft a bit of win dirty onto what we have.

Yeah of course. I have a feeling I was looking at a table with best home records possibly. Either that or the beer had got to me.

Or put another way. We don't do winnable. Not at home anyway, and it's been like that for a while now.
For that reason the Yeovil game will be more of a challenge than yesterday, certainly in the bit between the ears of the players.

Next Saturday will not be dissimilar to the scenario before the Crawley game. A chance to close the gap with a game against a struggling side. Will be interesting to see if the management and players have learned from the approach taken to that game.

What a fantastic result, fair play.

The more I watch those the more it looks like a pen in that scramble. Woolfenden has his legs taken while about to shoot.
Great result tho and typical town to lose to yeovil's now

Yep defo pen in there, maybe two.

The foul on Bennett looks stonewall too.

You could argue that the foul on Woolf, was a red card offence, as he's just about to stick the ball in when clattered from behind.... I don't think he did, but by today's rules, even if the defender got the ball it's still a foul as he went through Woolf.

Definitely not the correct thread, but I didn't want to create another one just for this..

Anyone know how much it is to park at the CG on matchdays? Or where is the best place to park these days? I usually park in town but it tends to cost a fair bit and can't be fucked with the walk to and from pre/post match.

If you’re going to get there after about twenty past two, then Tesco parking is free for three hours

And if you want to get there earlier, the Merlin is £2.

Fire station is also a good option - think it's £5
