Title: Swindon Town FC v Morecambe pre match chat and match day thread
Post by: Ginginho on Friday, March 22, 2019, 20:51:10
My third game of the season, i'm taking my Dad to his first game in over 2 years, due to illness.

A resounding 3-0 victory in front of 6200 fans dangling that playoff carrot ever so tenuously.

Looking forward to seeing the January signings for the first time.

That sounds like you're trying to use it as a cure - I'd be worried it might have the opposite effect!

Likely be my last game until Notts C.

Season ticket will resume getting dusty in drawer as no-one else wants it.

Surely we will win.

2-1

Can't be fucked doing the full pre match shit today, the season is falling apart a bit the last 2 games so looking forward to Wellens getting in his own team next season and preparing for an assault on the league next season.

Rose, Broadbent and Robinson are all exactly what we need, Bennett shows flashes of good mixed with more flashes of shit.

Koiki going forwards looks handy but not as good defending yet, at least we don't have to put up with Taylor at LB any more after this season, he did ok last year with some brilliance but this season hes been there to make the number sup, nothing more. The same with Richards.

Morecambe are pretty shit despite being unbeaten in the last 3 winning their last 2 home games vs FGR and MK Dongs and drawing away at the worst team in the league Notts County and the game before that they lost at the miserable Yeovil.

The players are now playing for their STFC future and anyone not able to perform against a team 6 places below us in the table needs to take a long hard look at themselves.

We have never lost to this lot in 6 matches and only conceded once which was in last seasons home draw, the only time they have taken a point off us.

Swindon 3-0 Morecambe with Anderson, Robinson and Woolf scoring in front of 6,051 with just 72 Shrimps there.

The only thing that gives me hope that it will be a bit better than last week is the improvement in the weather.  :)

Also, I see that Vigs didn't get any game time again yesterday:

So today Vigs, Carroll and House are out for international call ups, I wonder what side we will put out then.

                 McCormick
Knoyle   Woolf      Broadbent    Koiki
                   Rose  Dunne

   Woolery        Anderson     Bennett
                         Robinson

Toums Conroy McCourt Richards Bancroft Taylor

Will be a call up for probably Archie Matthews as back up keeper I expect.

Colchester and Northampton currently both losing, with Carlisle, FVR & Exeter drawing and ourselves winning, that  Play-Off glimmer still hinges on, especially with the game in hand. If it stays like this we'll be just 2pts away from 7th (and 6th), when we beat Newport.

This bastarding 'hope' is going to toy with me until the last game of the season, I know it.

I still think he's the better Keeper. If he clean sheets today, I'm sure that's will be his 4th/5th in about 7/8 games (total), likely 4 out of 6 in league games. I haven't checked though.

Much better, the only way they get into this is our own over playing and switching off, or from a set piece.

Woolery has their left back scared out of his skin, keeps backing off and ended up giving him the chance he scored.

Midfield looks good when a team doesn't out number us or harry as.

Agree, if Woolery did this more often we'd have a real asset on our hands. Can see the attraction in signing a player like Woolery/Keshi but like many a half decent Winger/Attacker, if they lose confidence in their own pace then they tend to become very insular, thus you get a player who looks lost. Gladly not the case today.

It was actually quite enjoyable to watch, we controlled the whole of the game and were getting a lot more shots and crosses in the box.

Morecambe tried to play football but were a very average side for L2.

Nobody played badly today we played as a team and at times the passing was great to watch. I have said all season I feel more confident with McCormick in goal and today was no exception.

Bennett had his best game for us and deserved a goal even if the keeper had teflon on his gloves.

If we play like that every week we can fear no one, get the consistancy and we could storm the league next season.

Bennett is a poor footballer but must have the luckiest right foot in the country.  Imagine if Anderson would shoot more often.

You look at Woolery and Anderson and the goals they scored from outside the box vs FGR and MK respectively and it makes you wonder why the hell they don't shoot from outside the box more often, they obviously have that in their "locker" so why not utilise it more often?

Thoroughly enjoyed that, never looked in any danger (although I did spend most of the 1st half going "We need a second or we'll get done by a sucker punch" just because we do) but they were poor. Enjoyed the cameo from Lord Voldermort towards the end but it seemed like it was Bennett who was using sorcery as their keeper seemed to not even notice he'd taken a shot until he woke up as the ball bounced past him!

Not a lot to add to what has been written so far.  2-0 at half time and always in control yet our keeper has made 2 quality saves to keep them out.  4-0 was a fair reflection of the dominance we had for the whole game.  Bennett named mom, but not for me, Conroy or Rose I thought should have been there.  So what do we think of our chances for next season?  A lot depends on recruitment, Conroy (I think) is out of contract so he is a must for a new one as is Knoyle.  Robinson?

First time i've seen several of the players.

Thought Bennett was deserved MOM, had a great game and caused problems throughout.

Conroy was excellent also and took his goal with great skill and composure for a centre back.

Carroll, got stuck in and ruffled their feathers, but his passing was awful at times.

Anderson. Worked hard but had a disappointing game.

Koiki, had a good game and was a threat going forward.

Woolfenden, assured at the back and confident going forward, played some nice long passes too.

Although, that's only my third game this season, there can't be too many teams worse than Morecambe in this league. They were piss poor, and the only chance I remember them having was from a Danny Rose cock up.

A very easy and thoroughly deserved victory. We put so many balls into the six yard box, had we had a poacher on the pitch we could've had 6-7 goals today.

I think us having won 4-0 and there are under 6 pages of a matchday thread tell us something, within 12 hours after the last defeat vs Stevenage there were 15 pages.

I do think some fans prefer it when we have lost.

Played some nice football yesterday, albeit Morecambe let us play.

Need to get Knoyle and Conroy signed up for next season as a priority.

There has been some recent debate on Anderson and Woolery.
Keep one, keep both, move them both on.

If Wellens is going to stick with the same formation, then I'd say keep them both.
It's a risk as both will need to try and hit double figures for goals, plus a few more assists from both of them.
I think both have more chance of improving under Wellens than was the case under Flitcroft and Brown.

Woolery puts in a good shift for the team, can finish with both feet and is starting to get more crosses in.
Keshi, on his day, knits it all together and we look to miss him when he doesn't play.
He's fluffed a few easy chances this season so the goal return should be a lot better than it is.

I reckon both can do very well next season.
Wellens tough love approach might suit them in terms of improvement, particularly after a full pre season.

This season has a similar feeling to the 84-85 season when Macari came to the club, we finished that season in 8th place with 21 wins and 72 points (pre play offs).

We had a couple of bad defeats, a 4-0 at Northampton, a 4-0 at Wxm and a 6-2 at Scunthorpe but after Lou was reinstated after his dismissal in March we had a good run with just 2 defeats and 6 wins in 10 matches. A results sequence quite similar to under Wellens.

Crowds were down there was a feeling of something good happening to the club as a whole. We had a few decent players but Macari was allowed to bring in 7 of his own players for the next season to play his own style of football.

The following season was a great season accumulating 102 points and easily winning the title and gaining promotion with 8 games left to play.

I do think that under Wellens there is a similar feeling about the club and a lot of the fanbase too.

I think that most of our fans can see there are green shoots of recovery on the pitch and the buying of the ground will give a feel good factor off the pitch too.

Fingers crossed we can finish this season strongly and build on that for next season, I am for the first time since PdC cautiously optimistic about things on and off the pitch at Swindon.

Now to get that consistancy on the pitch!

I think us having won 4-0 and there are under 6 pages of a matchday thread tell us something, within 12 hours after the last defeat vs Stevenage there were 15 pages.

I do think some fans prefer it when we have lost.

There are certain notable absences on here as usual.

This season has a similar feeling to the 84-85 season when Macari came to the club, we finished that season in 8th place with 21 wins and 72 points (pre play offs).

I see where you're coming from... but.... Lou was able to make the necessary improvements for the following year by spending money we didn't have, on players like Colin Calderwood, who became an STFC great. Wellens, rightly, won't be able to do that.

Haven't really looked at the likely composition of Div 4 for next season yet, as both the Conference and Div 3 situations are complex, butrecent years have shown us there will be a few up or down who will spend more than us.  That's assuming Brexit doesn't produce some sort of recession.

I actually feel less inclined to post after we've lost - I just want to forget about it, I don't even bother watching the goals on the EFL show on Quest. Realistically the season is over but I get the Macari 84-85 season comparison and I think Wellens has at least given us reason to be optimistic for next season - That's all you can ask for as a lower league fan - light at the end of the tunnel - hopefully that light's not a train heading straight for us...  8)

Realistically the season is over

We know there are those who have taken that line for fortnight or so..... as they take the view that any hope of going up has gone and that's what they're interested in... it's reflected in the gate.

That's not a surprise, it's always been that way.  Similarly the more obsessive fan, will still get off on any game as an event, with targets, both short term and by season's end.

For the properly obsessed, the close season is a time of dread.

I think that depends on the individual Reg  ;D ...I don't see why being obsessed and optimistic are mutually exclusive  ;)

No I've been in Hospital for the last week, lucky for me I was in Southampton when I was taken sick.

At least we've got an extra £350m a week to help you. I hope you are ok.

First time i've seen several of the players.
Although, that's only my third game this season, there can't be too many teams worse than Morecambe in this league. They were piss poor, and the only chance I remember them having was from a Danny Rose cock up.

Morecambe's away record and recent form isn't too bad.... Bentley does a remarkable job keeping them in Div 4.

Most teams in Div 4 are fairly similar... our problem as it has been for a while is being able to beat some of the average outfits at the CG.  With 3 sides to play and 14 teams below us... Shrimps were only the 4th of the other 11 we've beaten at the CG.   If we are to get up the table then that has to change next season, and there is just a hint that Wellens might be starting to do something about that... so we haven't conceded in the last 4, perhaps not yet quite convincing but just a little hint of something better, and we're very much into feeding off crumbs these days.

tbf, I think there's plenty of times when after a win, folks just feel good and don't feel the need to go "Yaaay, we won". But after we lose, people are pissed off and want to vent. That's just natural human behaviour, don't think it's unique to Town fans

yesterday was good. and we did nearly everything right.

it's not very exciting as posts go.

I'm better at moaning. Woolery was lively yesterday but for god's sake learn to cross man. Aaaah, that's better.

Woolery had a great game, surprisingly showing how good he can be in the air too. Seemed to win more headers in that game than most of the season.

yeah that's a good point, he did put some good headers in too

If only he and Anderson were more consistent, they'd be playing at a higher level by now.

Maybe a pre-season with the right manager will snap it into them. Maybe that manager will be Wellens. Or maybe not.

Woolery's injuries early season can't have helped.

Getting more goals out of them may be a big ask. It's really tricky to know what to do with them going forward into next season. Who'd be a manager.

They're not strikers. They're not midfielders. They're not wingers. What are they?

I think we have to go with both next season... they're at the sort of stage career wise, that if the penny is to drop it should be now. They'll both be out of contract in 2020, so will need to impress to carry on in league football, which might concentrate minds.

We are just starting to get a few more goals spread out around the squad, like Conroy yesterday... Wellens was lamenting about lack of goals from corners, suggesting not a lot can be done.... I'd say more work.

1 goal in 40 home games now for Keshi. But he’s quite a good forward. Astonishing really.
