Title: Eating Out
Post by: Chubbs on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, 09:51:14
Come on then, lets have some recommendations. My wife is making me leave the house for a birthday meal so need to choose somewhere, ideally in Swindon, or not far out. Around Blundson would be acceptable too.
Miller and Carter is an option but been there done that....
Weighbridge is a no, it was terrible the last time i went
Curry, as much as i would be happy with one is out.
Italian, meh
Chinese, to my knowledge all Chinese restaurants in Swindon are just average.

I dislike eating out, but we have a child free weekend and apparently its what couples do.

Red lion at Cricklade? There's also a superb thai restaurant there (but will need booking in advance).

Is that the Jicsaw? Might be a shout, forgot about that one.

My last foodie foray back in Jan was the Chop House in Wood Street. It was good.

H&W in Wichelstowe
Went there last time we came to Swindon a couple of weeks after opening, it was shit.

Been there, wasn't impressed. In fact, my meal was pretty bad.

Is Moshan Island Grill still in Old Town? Very good food, and very strong punch.

If you want to go a bit further afield, I was in the Red Lion at East Chisenbury a couple of weeks back for a quick lunchtime pint, but no food.  It's got a Swindon post code, and a Michelin star.... has accommodation also. Bit posh for my tastes, but I know some people like that sort of thing.

Another vote for the Moshan Grill, great food.

A bit further out, I would highly recommend the Falcon Inn at Poulton.
Best pub food I've had in this area by miles.

The three crowns in Brinkworth was always really good, haven't been for a few years though..  Not the cheapest, but always good food..

Moshan is shutting soon, if it hasn't already.

I liked Old Town Thai when I went there last year. I mainly eat Italian when I go out though, so that'll be little use

+1 for the Chophouse. They do serve on chopping boards though.

Hop Inn for good, and often great, beer plus the best pizzas in town.

I had a similar experience there.
Possibly one of the only times I have ever left a meal because I disliked it, rather than being too full.

Its possible it was an off day because loads of people rave about it but i had a rack of ribs that had been slow cooked for so long even the bones turned to mush. Literally every mouthful had bits of soft bone in it

You may or may not have noticed, but the Hop is moving into The Pig, the old porn shop is being taken on by some Brizzle mob.

There's a thai restaurant on Wood Street, which is fucking superb. Also, I know you said Curry is out, but The Mela got a new owner some time back and some of the food served there is without question some of the best food I've eaten anywhere.

It's not your normal curry either; there's some really top drawer stuff and loads of great fish curries. We took my old man there for his 70th and we let them choose for us. Took a while, but it was incredible.

Presumably you sent it back?

Can’t recommend smile thai on eastcott hill highly enough. It’s tiny, so not one for refined dining if that’s what you’re after. The Jungle curry is great but makes the morning after on the loo a bit spicy.

I read that as "Can I recommend a small Thai on Eastcott Hill..."  :D

Royal Oak, Old Town is good & the place to be seen (never thought I'd say that!).

Yak, the Himalayan Restaurant in Devizes Road if you like you curry dry.

Greek Olive Faringdon Road.

Chop House if you like to know the name of the animal you're eating

The Core for daytime vegan / veggie / flexitarian types.

The Crossing in town has good eateries for lunchtimes if you are OK with sharing your eating experience with the yoof.

Please let us know where you end up, and how it was.

Happy Birthday btw

Yes we stayed there about 6 months ago, the food is good but its pretty standard Chef & Brewer menu, a little step up from Beefeater quality.

Jesus that's a blast from the past, is that at the top of the Blunsdon Hill? As a kid we used to go there, I may be thinking of a totally different place but did it have a massive beer garden with swings and a crow's nest type climbing net to boot?

We are probably talking 25-30 years ago so I could be getting completely confused but I am pretty sure we used to go to the Cold Harbour (coke floats also ring a bell)

The Cold Harbour was a disappointing chain pub style thing last time I went. They also nearly cocked up our Mother's day booking at that time.

Perhaps not representative, or taken over again (about 5 years or so since we went)?

Jack's in old town serves good food. I know people have moaned about slow service but I must have got lucky as it was spot on when I went.

Most of us old enough to remember that shop refer to it as Richmond’s grocery shop. 🤔

I'm sure I'm old enough, but don't remember Richmond's, think it was Peg's Pantry before the sex shop.

We used to use Mason's for some groceries which was in High Street.
