Title: Swindon v Grimsby pre match chat and match day thread

Grimsby don't do draws. We'll either win 2-1 or they'll batter us 3-0. Game on.

Grimsby on a 4 game winning streak, and they've won the last 3 v Town, beating 3 different gaffers... Flitcroft, Brown, Wellens.

You'd think that run has to end soon, so a draw a possiblity.   Weather looks a bit different to what we usually get at Blundell Park.

2 teams fairly well matched in the table, again it depends on which Town team turn up, we are either excellent or terrible with no in between. When on form no team can play us, when off form we can be beaten by the worst.

Grims are current above us on goal difference in 12th place by virtue of having -2 GD to our -3 GD.

Their leading scorer is ex Town loanee Wes Thomas on 11 goals, they then have 3 players on 4 goals next highest scorers.

They have scored 37 (Swindon 38) conceded 39 (Swindon 41) so far but have played 1 more game than Town.

Away from Findus Park they have won 5 drew 2 lost 9 scoring 14 and conceding 22 goals.

Grimsby current form LLLLLWWWW
Swindon current form DDLWDWLWW

Grims are on a decent run of 4 league wins in a row after a run of 5 defeats in a row, their best run since March 1990.

They have some disciplinary problems with 7 red cards so far this season the 2nd worst in the league after Stevenage on 9, (Swindon 4).

The Fishy people have only won at the County Ground twice in 22 meetings but both of those have come in the last 4 matches with Town winning 15 times. They never travel in many numbers to Swindon normally with usually well under 250.

They won at the CG last time 1-0 and were one of the worst side I have seen it was a total smash and grab scoring with a highly disputed penalty against a poor underperforming Swindon team who had 2 goals disallowed and hit the bar twice.

Predictions from the Brothers Grim forum.

https://forum.thefishy.co.uk/Blah.pl?m-1550696518/s-0/

Apparently according to them we will only get about 4,400 there (the average of the 30 or so guesses so far ignoring the fact that we have not had a league crowd under 5,000 for 12 years and out home average 6,443 so far) and the concensus is that they will beat us or at least draw with only 4 prediction a Town win (so far). With one of them predicting Jordan Stewart(the little fat Irish kid as they call him)  will score despite him having left Swindon nearly 2 years now!

In the 24 games between beating us at Blundell and the CG.... Mariners woin 3 other games... v Barnet, Chesterfield and FGR. The 2 who went, and FGR who very nearly went. Those few wins after a steady start enough to keep them up.

You'd like to think their luck may be about to run out... a draw perhaps possible and if we could win the next 3 after that we could still get in the mix.

Yes last season the Grims were a terrible side, definately bottom 3 performance wise but they had a lot of luck against us but I doubt we actually deserved much from that and many other games last year.

If we could win our game in hand (on 10 teams above us) we could be just 3 points off the play offs, still all very open, a run of wins will stand us in good stead for the final 2 months of the season.

I fully expect 3 points.

That could potentially leave us 3 points adrift with a game in hand.

6-2 win.

I've seen this scoreline in our favour twice at the CG.... last time April 1980 v Rotherham... Andy Rowland got 4, my memory is more or less all tap ins. Previous to that v Mansfield 65.. Keith East got 5.

In 68/69 we managed it on the road at Cobblers, though of course that was also at the CG  :)

I was at the last two games mentioned. AFAIR all 5 "forwards" scored against Northampton. After our third or fourth went in a I heard a home fan say "I can see them getting six".  The next time I heard that said was by a nearby Town fan during our 6-2 home loss to Blackpool, when despite the score Swindon fans were cheering and not booing the Town players. I think Alan Mayes scored one to two for Blackpool that night.

I didn't want to mention 6-2 reverses, as there have been a few.... usually on our travels.

Although the Town support stayed largely on board in the Blackpool game, some kiddy did jump out the TE and take the corner as sort of protest about the lack of quality on set pieces.

Only one defeat in 11 home games played on 23rd Feb since 1946.
Today is a good day.

Their fans seemed to have travelled everywhere in good numbers since their return to the league.
Going Viking must be in the blood.

Hopefully their team comes to attack today and not to just cower behind a shield wall.

I have a feeling that come 5pm The Norns will have decreed that our opponents will be feasting in Valhalla after a mighty and hard fought struggle.

Destiny is All.

Anyway, I've got Grimsby at 4/1 so joining Dave in betting against us today.

Last season a bus load of their fans turned up at The Shield and Dagger prior to and after the game. Being the "sole" Town supporter who had been at the match in the bar afterwards was a bit of a downer. Will be interested to see if they make a return visit and I can have bragging rights this time.

House was always going to be the sixth loanee.

Still going to be a beneficial spell for him, it just won't result in much game time.

He is 2nd on the list of most saves so far this season just behind Jills keeper Holy (who I hear is excellent with crosses ;) ).

170⛔️: Tomas Holy
145⛔️: James Mckeown

141⛔️: Marek Rodak

Exactly, lets go for it.

Nobody really expects a challenge for the play offs now so lets give it all we have got.

We are not out of the race by any means but I doubt more than a handful of our most optimistic fans actually believe we will get to the play offs.

Towns game plan so far is long balls over the top of the 3 slow centre backs down in the channels, but too many wayward balls so far, the idea is right but the execution is poor so far. Robinson, Woolery and Robinson all have the beating of the back 5 for Grims when they have the ball.

0-0 HT we havent played badly but we offer little up front, Grims have come for a 0-0 and to try and grab it on the break, we have not really looked under any pressure from them.

Koiki and Anderson not having good games, Woolery hit and miss, Robinson doing ok but has 2 player son him most of the time.

Bennett is a waste of space and needs replacing.

First minute was good, last minute was good, the rest was pointless.  They are there for the taking but no idea what we are playing at.  Push our full backs onto their wing backs, nobody has any pace to get behind us.  Push the forwards players forward.  Anderson and Bennett may as well have sat on the bench in that half.  Bennett looks like a kid playing above his age range watching the game go on around him.

Bennett reminds me in build and style of play to Twine, and Twine is not good enough...enough said.

Anderson has not had a great game but he did a couple of runs which were good, hes not as bad as Bennett but its not been a good game for Anderson so far.

Thats certainly not how I have seen it, the Grimsby forum have also said they are very lucky to be going in at 0-0 HT. I thought they rarely threatened us at all other than 2 or 3 counter attacks.

From the Grims forum...

Quote
Looking really ropey here. Lucky still to be level really - McKeown keeping us in it.

It often takes us 15 minutes to get going I just hope its one fo those sorts of days and we're not in for a whole game being pinned back like this.

Two incredible stops by McKeown - the first looked a certain goal one on one. Town's defence like statues.

Too many passengers in that first half. Not sure any town player has been above 6/10 today. Would like to see Clifton and Dennis on early doors second half - think the pitch will suit them.

Agree our midfields not in this game at all Hess and Wooly are sitting too deep and its inviting the pressure off Swindon, one of them needs to push up a bit more a spread Swindons midfield a little more. They're only playing one up top we shouldn't be this rushed at the back.

Passing aimlessly around untill they lose it going no where. When we work it down the wing we are all waiting for the cross which never comes. If your not going to cross it why waste all thoe passes for nothing. Midfield and defenders near the halfway line passing back to the goalkeeper who boots it aimlessly upfield.

Thought Bennett had a great opening 5/10 minutes but has barely touched the ball since.

Grims aren’t as bad as some are making out, better than I’d though they’d be, although they’ve not made one decent chance yet. They’ve been growing into the game all half. We Should be winning this regardless though.

That was proper shite.

Think Wellens got bits of it wrong today - Bennett should not have played through the middle and Koiki was really poor. There just wasn’t any urgency from a Town, even after Grimsby had gone down to 10. It’s a shame as I thought Wellens’ tactics against FGR were so good. Two points dropped.

Must be on my own here. Thought we played well, were the better team and should have won.

Theo was deserved MOM. Looks very sharp and dangerous. The chances we had were good and we should have scored more than once for sure.

yes errors were made with passes and freekick optinos but overall dont let the dissapointment of 2 points dropped cloud an alright display.

Grimsby were alright- solid nothing special. Had 2 shots on target and scored one as a free header.

Iv seen so much worse this season at home that it was good to see the new boys improve the team. no dramas from me here.

on a side note- are they any seats in the nationwide without vocal knob heads in the vicinity? its a drone on the whole game. i question those that only turn up to abuse our own players and shout power out every 30 mins in one burst. Do they enjoy the negativity?

Disappointing and 2 points dropped without a doubt.

Complete lack of urgency even when Grimsby equalised.  Up until then, we were totally on top, but Grimbsy probably then had the best chances to win it.

Subs should have been made earlier.  I'm struggling to see what Carroll adds.  Everytime he goes forward he loses the ball or passes backwards.

It wasn't all bad today. We controlled it and made the better chances. Perhaps not as many as we could, but enough to win. Grimsby on the other hand offered little.

And that's what makes it frustrating. And shows we are probaby a little off a playoff charge.

Subs made far too late to make an impression.

Fingers crossed we can manage to get a draw, would be a great result considering we are odds on favourites

You can uncross them now... incidentally hope you don't place much emphasis on bookies' odds.... there aren't so many of them making pots of $, because punters get it right too often.

Definitely a point gained today.... takes us up into the top half and still just about keeps hope alive that if we can win the next 3 we'll be back in the mix

Yes we were better for the first 30 mins, then fizzled out. That's why it's so frustrating. Agree that the team looks to be improving though.
We seem to have developed a pattern of late of showing how well we can play for the first 30 mins or so and then if we do manage to get something in that period we take heart and go on to play well. If we don't we kind of fizzle out a bit and seem to lose confidence in our ability to play, we get it back in 5-min spells but never look like doing much to take hold of the game. That's at least the fourth game this season we've failed to beat a team with less players than us at home.  I think we have a few too many who are mentally soft, and I don't think Wellens will be minded to carry them judging from his comments post match

You're not on your own at all. We did need more urgency but we did not play badly. Grimsby were fortunate to come away with 1 point. Wollery should have scored in the 1st half, we gifted them a goal, we hit the post and there were other chances that just needed somebody in the right place at the right time.

If we didn't fall asleep and concede people would be saying it was a decent performance and a good win. We did (concede) though.

I think in some cases it may be more frustration than anything when people say we were shit.

The bit I was referencing, he applauded Robinson's workrate and desire and said Woollery and Anderson would do well to look at his example.  Said they had too many spells of 10 minutes here and there where they were content to just sit back and watch the game happen, they need to do more to want to get involved, that's why they've not scored enough goals. Very well put, succinct and to the point, calm and clinical not ranting about it, but still a bit of a public dressing down. Not necessarily sure about the public nature of it, he's basically gone on the radio and called them lazy shits who are going through the motions, but can't argue with the analysis

We passed it around very well first half, and sharply, and if Woollery had shot when he was clean through instead of trying to round the goalkeeper perhaps we would have scored and gained confidence.

We can't afford to miss golden chances if we are to get in the playoffs.

I think the hesitation to bring subs on is down to the lack of game changers. I dont think richards touched the ball, with ben house injured and youth strikers on loan thats it for making a change up top.

All the rest are midfielders who are like for like changes. Not like the days of rory fallon warming up to get the fans excited. the subs havent made any difference to any of the home games iv seen.

I'm not exaggerating when I say had to check the team sheet on about 35 minutes to see if Bennett was playing. I thought I might have misread it or something.

A bit harsh to judge him just yet, though. It was only his first full game for us.

So was I, no it wasn't. We've seen enough genuine shite over the last few seasons to know the difference. But it was bloody annoying

That’s the beauty of opinions.

For me, it was awful. But I am basing that off of the FGR performance, which I thought was intelligent and assured.injust don’t think it was good enough tactically today.  Too many passes going astray, too many passengers, not enough in the final third.

I'd imagine Theo is looking for a contract in the summer.... as far as we know Kaiyne and Keshi are still with us next year, so they might follow Theo's example.

It will be if Wellens can get that bit more out of those 2, which will decide if we can have a proper go at auto next season.

I kind of agree with much of that, but there was plenty of good play, certainly in the 1st third of the game. Like I say, we've seen much much worse than that recently, the 1st 30 was decent and there were flashes after that. Overall it was disappointing but compared to the actual shite we've watched in recent years, I don't think that was.

I think we've seen enough to know that there could be a bit more to come from these 2.... if you have the sort of easy access to the resources to get better, than yes replace them, but I'm not sure we do.

Oh definitely, and I suspect Wellens is trying to find a way to do that as you suggest, public shaming being the latest tactic. But they've both been here long enough now that while I agree there could well be a bit more to come I wonder whether either of them can be arsed to dig deep enough to find it. Hope Wellens finds the key to unlock one or both of them

Agree and in any case any half-decent manager will always want to try and get the best out of what he's got before he goes looking to buy in another set of problems. But how many successive managers have we had now who have tried and failed to get the best out of these two? Suggests possibly what we have seen is all they are willing to give

Well they were both signed by Flitcroft, so he had a go as did Brown... I would say under Wellens they've started to look a bit more effective... of course it is all relative, an improvement, but probably not yet sufficient to get us much up the table.

Very frustrating game, but we weren’t shite.

Koiki had his worst game for us, he’s a young lad and it’s going to happen. Unfortunately Taylor wasn’t fit so no change could be made. Everyone worked hard, can’t criticise them for that, things just didn’t go to plan. Doughty was a huge miss, even Vigs with his passing. We had chances, Woolery should have had 2, Theo missed a header. We’ve played worse and won, so I’m not too disappointed.

We are only 1 point worse off with regards to the play offs than we were before the game. So it’s still all to play for.
Don’t agree with the Wellens criticism with regards to tactics, I think injuries made it difficult for him to change the game todau today.
We just need to keep at it, win next week and it’ll all be forgotten.

I thought going forward we played really well but it seems like we need an extra touch when a cross or shot could be the better option. However there wasn't many shooting boots on display today, the shots were rather poor especially going out for a throw in.
Whoever mentioned earlier in the thread that if we haven't scored in the decisive period when we're on top we lose momentum is spot on.
I thought Bennett played quite well, a few more games under his belt and he'll be an asset.
Bang on half time we should have scored but rather than shoot he opted to try and round the keeper.
All in all not a bad performance, they are on a run of 4 straight wins so can't grumble too much.

As I said all game, we were the better side against a very average Grims side (not bad by any means but not good) that offered little in attack, our problem is we labour too long in build up and don't take shots when in good positions, otherwise I thought we played ok.

10 seconds of falling asleep after the goal cost us a win.

I was there, it was shite.
I watched it and it really wasn't.

We are improving and that was by no means shite, we passed well and controlled the game and never looked in much danger of conceding, unfortunately thats exactly what we did when the whole team fell asleep after scoring.

For me Bennett was a waste of a place and we missed Doughty who creates so many of our chances, Bennett barely made a single tackle or pass all game, 5/10 for his full debut and should have gone off far sooner but we had little to replace him with off the bench.

Keith Scott was criticising Robinson all game and praising Bennett! I thought Robinson played really well when he was given a ball he could even attempt to win, far too many times it was hoofed up to him to fight with a centre back who had 4 inches in height over him. He took his goal like a proper poacher and was easily our best attacking option all game, Woolery should have got a couple but he could just not hit the target yesterday, if either of his good chances had fallen to Robinson I feel he would have scored both.

Koiki had easily his worst game but still got a couple of excellent crosses into the box, he just seemed to lose concentration after he was kicked early on.

Still played solidly but please shoot when you have the chance in or around the box and don't try and walk the ball into the net ala Williams side.

First half we were dominant in large parts and in the 2nd we were the better side for the majority of time. Woolery was unlucky on a couple of occasions and, but for a total lack of concentration after our goal, we should have comfortably won.
Don't understand those that thought it was shit, for league 2 I thought it was a pretty good game.

I'd already resigned myself to basement football again next season, Wellens seems to in the process of building something and I'm cautiously optimistic that 2020 will see us return to league one.

Them plus FGR are eminently catchable - whether by us or any of the chasing pack.

We have real problems with ColU at the CG.... 2 wins in the last 10. It is a must win game, but it will require something better than the usual to get.

Exeter at Lincoln tonight... if you take the line that we're still going for a PO spot, then we need a Lincoln win. That would leave Exeter, FGR, and ColU on 54, from 34. FGR are wobbling a bit atm and we could claw back ColU in Saturday's big match.

Clutching at straws somewhat, but it's got to be better than having Prem B teams in Div 4.

Yep, a Lincoln win definitely needed - means we're within 4 points of 3 potentially faltering sides if we win our game in hand.

And it's fun to clutch at straws. Not clutching at straws as a football fan is boring.

Akinde again - the sort of striker that would do us good.

That was Akinde's 2nd in 11, he takes their pens but has scored the same as Doughty, a midfelder. difference being its taken JA 33 games to do that against 23 for MD.

Had JA started for us this season say in place of Bayo, it probably wouldn't have made too much difference. Lincoln have been in the auto slots all season, because they've a strong squad, which spreads the goals around and are hard to beat.

Further they have that ability to grind out a point against the odds, or get a winner with a late goal.

We're not quite there.... something acknowledged by Wellens..

Quote
“If we want to be in the play-offs – which I don’t think we are ready for at this moment in time – but if we want to get there, we have got 13 games to make up seven points with a game in hand.

Personally, as far as Div 4 goes, I don't want the PO's..... I'd much rather next season mount a proper campaign for autos.

Wellens will have had a decent chunk of time to look at the squad, see what he wants to keep, and then a pre season etc  to get fitness and style of play sorted, and more importantly the mentality required to win games at the CG.

Staple diet. Particularly when the wife is moany. The epicentre of that quake which I haven't seen any reference to, was where they were fracking until recently.
