Title: Looking for an IT Consultant
Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, January 31, 2019, 13:11:54
So, I know there are a few IT guys here, myself included but i just don't have the time.

My missus works for Headway Charity and their (non existent) IT guy is shocking. They recently just lost months of work due to being infected by ransomware and subsequently realized that backups had not been running for some time.
Since my wife started working there i have helped out where i can, things that i can do in the evenings but she's, through my advice had finally managed to persuade the CEO to re-evaluate their IT infrastructure and support.

Bare in mind, it is a charity so funds are few and far between but to get started they want to get an consultant in to perform a quick cost and risk and benefit analysis on their current infrastructure and what they need to do to improve it.
Does anyone have any recommendations or anyone on here able to do it?

Thanks

They may have to pay. Circa £500-1000 is the norm day rate.

Any info on setup? Vanilla network? Windows version? Do they have all the paperwork for licensing etc?

Yea, that the sticking point, they don't have much money and certainly wont be able to pay that "going rate"

As for set up, i don't really know. I have asked my wife if i could go in and have a look and shes working on it but i do know its a mess.
There is no consistency with equipment or software, its as if their IT guy goes to PC world and just buys whats on offer that week.

I dont really have much info to be honest.

Sounds like the sort of job I wouldn't want to do for twice the going rate. Hiding to nothing.

Ha ha good man. I've just done all that and did myself out of a job, as they didnt have a clue what they were doing. Now they do and I'm stuffed..

Most companies seem to be like that in my experience. God knows how some people get high paid jobs. Maybe i should just smile more.

Have you tried the local branch of BCS? Someone there might help at a preferable rate or pro bono.
