Title: Algebra question
Post by: mystical_goat on Friday, January 18, 2019, 17:09:21
You build a pyramid of cubes with 1 cube on the top layer, 4 together on the 2nd, 9 on the 3rd, etc. There are 1 cubes in a 1 layer pyramid, 5 in a 2 layer, 14 in a 3 layer etc. How many cubes in an n layer pyramid?

I'll have a go at this later.  Love this stuff.  I know someone else will get there first though.  :)

I made it (2n^3 + 3n^2 + n)/6

I may be wrong.

(Sorry Ardiles)

 Is it to do with Pascal's triangle and pyramid?

Is the triangle anything to do with Oxford United's ground?

Thames Valley triangle?

Is that like the Winnersh Triangle which is something that's always puzzled me.

(Sorry Ardiles)

You're correct

Promise I haven't looked at the posts above before posting.   :D

I get:

(2n3+3n2+n)/6

Is that like the Winnersh Triangle which is something that's always puzzled me.

Should be called winnersh dead zone. I got off a national express for a wee  there on the way back from a game in London when I lived in Reading. The coach driver decided he could do with one less drunken passenger and left me there. Took me ages to get home. Nothing there of human interest.

So a bit like the Bermuida Triangle for human interest....

Layer No : 1, 2, 3,   4,  5,   6...etc
Layer Am: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36...etc
Differenc:  0, 3, 5,   7,   9, 11..etc

Accum Sum:1, 5, 14, 30, 55, 91...etc

So n should look something like;

n = (2n³+ 1)(3n¨+ n)

* ¨ = squared

Could've totally fucked this up on second thoughts. Oh well!

It's like a Fibonacci/Pascal mash up! I can't remember the name for it, been a while.

Yep, definitely fucked it up, just looked back and I've added an extra "+1" in and fucked up my brackets, apparently. Doh!

Well done Gwah :doh: :crash:
