Title: Mansfield town vs Swindon town Official Match Day Thread
Post by: herthab on Saturday, December 29, 2018, 08:40:16
Been a few years since I started one of these.

If we start like we did against Northampton we'll get battered. If we play like we did for the majority of the second half we should be good enough to pick something up.

No point really in trying to predict an outcome, we should be the new dictionary definition of inconsistent...

Not confident going in but it's a funny old time of year for results.

Optimistic 1-1.

An encouraging 1-1 (Woolery) draw of the 'point gained' variety.

Only Liverpool have lost less games than Mansfield so far this season. Mansfield’s sole defeat was against our first opponents of 2019 so we have the toughest couple of games imaginable in this division coming up.

Pre match not really feeling the warmth and appreciation in The Widow Frost.

Was expecting a spectacular display of god rays over Mansfield to support the locally held belief, in some quarters, that the sun does indeed shine out of Flitcroft's arse.
That wouldn't explain though, why a lot of the great man's press briefings sound very muffled, particularly the ones delivered when seated.

Anyway, Mansfield must be due a defeat. Why not today?

I think any Town fan would happily take a point against the team managed by one of the dullest people to have ever managed professional football, also we obviously have a bit of a score to settle with him after the way he bottled it at a crucial point when we could easily have pushed on to the play offs, Judas fuckwit that he is.

They are obviously very hard to beat with just 1 defeat so far in the league at home against Exeter City 2-1 back in September, they are the draw specialist with a 50% draw rate having notched up 11 so far from their 22 games.

Their recent League form has been WDWWWDWWW.

England U20 international Tyler Walker (son of ex England defender Des) is leading scorer on 14 goals during his loan spell from Nottingham Florists, with CJ Hamilton next highest on 7 goals. Rumour is that Walkers loan spell is going to be terminated on 1st Jan so he can go out on loand to a L1 club, too late for our game!

In games vs Mansfield we currently have a 62% win ratio and have won 5 of our 22 games at Field Mill. Our last 7 games there have finished DDDDLLW, the most famous of those being in April 86 when around 3,000+ Town fans witnessed a draw that won us the championship of this division under Macari.

They have ex Swindon players Elsnik and Preston.

Impossible to call, if we play well we could get a draw but I do feel a win is beyond us, I can't really contemplate a win TBH.

3-0 defeat in front of a meagre crowd of 4,312 boosted by 374 Town fans.

Feeling optimistic today.

3-1 to the Town.

50/1 got to be worth a little flutter.

Whatever the score, I expect some smug, self-obsessed comments from Microwave boy in the post match interview. If we win, it’ll be of the “look at the table” variety.

Complete oaf.

This is the only hope.... sometimes you do get a silly result.   Take last season, not too long after putting 5 on us at the CG, Luton headed to Chesterfield who as we know were Conference North bound, and Spireites won 2-0.   It's just that silly results don't often happen

We’ve sold 358 tickets in advance. A few POTD should see over 400 to witness a 1-4 pummelling.

Flitcroft to be sent to the stands, Preston sent off, Elsnik own goal.

That's true.
Looking at their recent form, the draws have become wins.
Our wildcard could be certain players being above par in wanting to prove a point.

Woolery could run riot.
Vigs could keep them at bay in the manner of someone with one hand tied behind their back, in a display of shoulder shrugging nonchalance not seen before.

Even a model pro like Taylor might have grown tired of the anecdotes on the benefits of a Northern upbringing.

You can only beat whats in front of you and Mansfield are the form team in this division with only 1 defeat this season and without a defeat in 16 games and having won 3 on the bounce.

We on the other hand have been playing so inconsistantly, yes on our day we can beat any side in this division, also we can just as easily lose to any side in this division.

We also have not beaten any of the sides in the top 7 positions in the league.

Bayo, Anderson, Woolery and Douty all playing well, we don't look too shaken at the back, McCourt is a better corner taker than Taylor, certainly from the right.

Playing quite well and Mansfield are little threat other than Walker, one man team it seems.

Mansfield have no pace at the back and look scared stiff when we run at them.

excellent in defence, restricted them to a few scrambles and one shot.

We shaded the first half they were a bit better 2nd half, we looked poor after Doughty did his best to fall out with every Town player and lost interest in the game.

The defence and Vigs were awesome, Taylors best defensive performance for me despite being targetted by Mansfield. Nelson was brilliant and gives everything.

We lacked a bit in attack again but despite them having a few chances we didn't actually look like conceding. Mansfield have one good player and defensively looked weak.

Very happy with a point up there and I hope Twatcroft is pissed off.

Fuckcroft and twatcroft in the same thread. Really... 🤔🙄

Shitcroft surely fits the bill better?

Just got back. Good point that. Same thing we've said all season; we need a striker. Mansfield really offered nothing much and look like a team set up to draw. Logan is a decent old keeper, in the kind of Dave Lucas mold. No one else for them really stood out. Thought Elsnik would have kicked on and became a L1 standard player now but likely Flitcroft will overwork him (when injured) and ruin his career. If I was Derby I would send him somewhere else, where the management know how to rehabilitate a player properly.

Would've taken the point beforehand but it was frustrating that we didn't put our chances away. We looked like scoring 2 or 3 on top of the one off the bar.

The right people in (striker and LB) during the transfer window and we could have a cracking 2nd half of the season. We'll likely see those draws turn into a few wins, and potential losses into draws. We are tougher to beat, despite not looking like a finished product yet. Get those players in and play offs is easily attained.

My nose is still cold, momentarily warmed by a shit HT Bovril. Bring on the Exe.

We need 6 more wins to ensure div 2 football next season, that should see us reach the 50 plus points tally.
It would be nice to bag one of those wins over the Christmas period but our team doesn't have many goals in it.
Hard to know who would join us and start scoring those goals, most strikers who can take the chances are already signed.
There's not much in the January free transfer market.

Title: Re: Mansfield town vs Swindon town Official Match Day Thread

Same thing we've said all season; we need a striker.

Not everybody has said that as such... think it's more a case of we need more goals, the goals can come from anywhere.  So for example Newport have both Amond and Matt in the top Div 4 scorers list, with 18 between them but only have 3 more points than us.

In our current system, we need to see more goals from Woolery and Anderson.... if both of them could get to 10 by seasson's end that would go a long way towards a decent season.

Interestingly here's Wellens take.....

Quote
“I need help – I need goals in the squad for our structure, for our pressing and intensity, for our counter."

The real winners today were Oldham and Grimsby. Many above dropped points like Exeter (v Grim City) and Stags.

Only Lincoln look like they want auto promotion and are the only team with a promotion form of just over 2.08 pts per game. After that only 6pts separates 8 teams, from MK Fakes in 2nd to Trannies in 9th. In the hunt for playoffs only 7pts separates 10 teams, from Bury in 5th to the Town in 14th. Vital we get our acquisitions right in January, as a few wins on the bounce and we can be in the mix not only for POs but for autos too, if we really want it.

We've dealt with 3 potential "banana skin" games quite well. 0-0 v our "bogey side" Chelt. 1-1 v Northampton. 0-0 v Stagnant Fritters. Whilst a win in there somewhere would've been pleasing, we could have come away from all of them with nothing. I think that is testament to how Wellens has set us up. All good points. Stick a poacher in there and they could all have been 1-0, 1-2, & 0-1 wins. Fine margins which would see us sat on top of Tranny, up the arse end of the Isle of Carl and only 2pts from Mansfield. This is why a striker (who can take those chances) is paramount to a season that ends with a minimum of POs.

Hopefully we can take it to Exeter at home in the New Year. We weren't far off beating Grimsby and were unlucky to lose. They beat Exeter today 1-3. Another difficult ask but we shouldn't be giving teams any respect in this division because we are more than capable of beating any of them. Just give us a goalscorer :)

Beat the Grecians on NYD and we would have come through the Christmas period unbeaten. Before Browns departure you’d be forgiven for looking at those four fixtures in a less than optimistic way.

There have been some games where they could have gone either way. With an out and out goal-scorer, we may have been able to add 6, 7, 8 points to the current point tally. Maybe more.

This is not even Wellens' team. Although he did inherit a decent (if unbalanced) squad, a few tweaks to his liking could swing those margins in our favour. Of course, it's early days yet but I'm encouraged by what I've seen so far.

The last game I attended was Wellens first in charge, a 4-0 home loss to Carlisle. Since then he has been in charge for three wins, three draws and just one defeat. You can't blame Wellens for that awful result against Carlisle, more likely to be my fault for attending  :). I'm more positive than I was under Flitcroft or Brown.

Not everybody has said that as such... think it's more a case of we need more goals, the goals can come from anywhere.

Obviously but I think you know what I meant. It is helpful if one of your forward players are scoring at a rate of 1 in 3 though (and only if others are chipping in). We know we have players in midfield and defence capable of scoring too.

I heard the Wellens comments on listen again. Think he's after someone who can get on the end of the crosses and a good finisher. For me JET comes to mind but he'd have to take a reality check on wages. He a free agent but imagine wage demand is his stumbling block. He's been without a club since leaving QPR in the Summer. Would be a coup indeed but i'm likely dreaming.

However he did mention that if we obtain Sid permanently that would free up a loan, so a different target but would give us scope to obtain someone out of favour in a higher division. First thought (and with the Jewell link) would be someone like Alex Jones? Not getting a look in at Bradford and believed to be a decent finisher. L2 could be favourable for him. Could he be the loan Wellens hints at, if Nelson becomes perm?

Good point. Fair result.

They were perhaps more cohesive than us and with maybe a bit more purpose, which might explain the difference in league position.
Both teams lacked a bit of creative quality.
We wasted possession too much and Vigs distribution was very poor.

Maybe Conroy is getting some games to get him up to speed if Sid doesn't return, but if Millwall are happy then it shouldn't take long to sort the extension out. Hopefully we'll see him at Macclesfield.

As things stand, the positives are that we don't have any outstanding players who will be sold, this is good, if you think of a season like 11/12 when we turned the year winning 4-2 at Charlton, and without ripping up any trees were 4 points off our current spot, albeit in Div 3. The sale of Autin and Morrison saw us finish bottom.

In 16/17 it was the loss of loan duo Doughty and Furlong and failure to replace them with the require experience which helped relegated us.... this season we look likely to lose Nelson, but do have some numbers back there who might be able to cover.

In order to jump the bodies in front of us, it will require a winning run, the like of which is very rare in our history... of course it's possible, just not very likely.  Realistically, Wellens should use this window and the final 20 odd games, to try and build up something for a serious top 3 drive from August.

This season feels like another ‘if’. If we beat Exeter, If we string a few results together, If we make the right signings, If Toumani can get fit.

Unfortunately there are already sides that are settled and have done all of the above. I’d love to be proven wrong but I feel like we’ve been left behind again.

...Sid doesn't return, but if Millwall are happy then it shouldn't take long to sort the extension out. Hopefully we'll see him at Macclesfield.

Think Wellens said as much that we are trying to get him on a permanent contract. Then again if his Millwall contract expires in the Summer we could get him on a free. Maybe we can pre-sign him? Happens with several players. The suit seems to fit for all parties concerned just depends if any other clubs make an offer for him in January. Around £100k-£150k might be enough to keep Millwall happy, for a player they'll get nothing for in six months.

Do we? "likely" seems quite a bold statement Reg. I think the minimum we will have him until the end of the season and there is an even chance of us getting him on a perm. That's going on both the comments of Wellens and Sid post match. Sid said he's loving it here and is just keeping his head down.

We aren't getting relegated. Not when we are 13pts from the drop and 8 of the 10 sides below us all have a worse GD to boot. Whereas we are only 7pts from 5th! Plenty to be looking upwards about.

JET hasn’t played for ages. Apart from not being match fit he’s a lazy cnut so is almost certainly overweight too. No thanks.

Unless Power is willing to splash the cash for a striker (unlikely) it’ll be another young loanee - not what’s needed, tbh.

Getting Sid signed up on a perm would be a great signing. Feels like we’re writing off this season already with a view to next.

When is it ever Bamboo? When is it ever?

The only season where we've mounted a late run at the PO's was last season Macari in 88/89. Then we were 34 points after about 25 in 16th spot, but 6 points off 6th, with a game in hand.  It required a run of W 12 D 6 L3 to get that last PO slot.

Stags fans saying Wellens got pissed off with some ‘banter, from their fans and he went into the crowd.

I’m warming to him.

They also said this

In the post match interview on 103.2, Bishop admitted that they didn't deal with the gale and difficult pitch well, and had to admit that a draw was fair. They are looking at a change of style for other games in similar conditions as it's quite likely from now on. He said that Swindon's 3 up front tactic worked well for them, but that Stags weren't entirely at the races.

I thought that Swindon had a great fitness level and kept their plan going almost to the end. Probably the most effective side we've played since Exeter.’

Being able to nullify a decent Mansfield side should form the basis of a club on the up.

Although the point is welcome, we're a long way from being able to say we're on the up..... the reality is that there's only been one season since Div 4 formed in 58, where we have been lower in the league at this time, 83/84.  That season we had the 3rd round and 4th round of the cup to look forward to, this season we went out to a Conference South side.

Wellens is to be commended for arresting the slide for now, but that's all it is atm.

Others who deserve commendation are the near on 500 who went to Field Mill, today, at least they had something to take back for their efforts.

1. The JET ref was partially tongue in cheek. He'd want too much per week anyway.

2. Not necessarily, already mentioned Alex Jones could be an experienced player to come on loan. 25 and out of favour at L1 Bradford.

3. Totally agree and would enable to free up a loan spot and get in someone like mentioned in point 2.

That was Division 2 though not Division 4 (League 2). Div 4 that season you needed 72pts for 7th.

Looking at how tight the table is this season Reg, I'd say 76 pts will be more than enough needed to reach 7th.

Below is the last 20 seasons (small model I know), of pts obtained to acquire 7th place in the bottom division. I included points near to your 76 target to give relevance to those finishing positions too. Seems that 16 of the 20 times, that low 70s (73 or less) has been enough to claim 7th. Thrice a bit extra was needed from mid 70s (74-77) with 2003, 2015 & 2017 needing 74, 75 & 75 respectively but still below the desired 76pts. Just once in the last 20 years has a team needed more than 76 and that came in 2007 with 78pts needed.

Looking further it seems that about 75% of the time, 76pts would give a very comfortable and rosy 5th or 4th place. With low 70s being the common modal range, to achieve 7th place. 71 and 72 appearing most often (5 times each) and 70pts or less has achieved 7th place 6 times, in this model.

2017 - 75
2016 - 70 (77 4th)
2015 - 75
2014 - 71
2013 - 71 (76 4th)
2012 - 69 (76 4th, 78 3rd)
2011 - 72 (77 6th)
2010 - 68 (73 5th, 79 4th)
2009 - 72 (73 4th)
2008 - 69 (75 5th, 78 3rd)
2007 - 78
2006 - 71 (74 5th)
2005 - 66 (72 5th, 78 4th)
2004 - 72 (75 5th, 78 4th)
2003 - 74 (75 5th)
2002 - 70 (74 4th)
2001 - 71 (79 3rd)
2000 - 72 (77 4th)
1999 - 72 (78 5th)
1998 - 71 (74 4th)

Of course, I'm not saying that we will definitely do it. We might but possibly adjust your 76pt marker to something like 72pts because it looks like it'll be a tight one Reg. Unless you're saying we'll finish 4th/5th?  :hmmm:

Good to see a bit of analysis, but I'm not sure of your data, surely 07 needing 78 points for 7th is wrong, and 66 points for 05 is an error.

Yes, 88/89 was in Div 2, but we had a good side, and it was difficult due to the standard of opposition... of the 3 games lost 2 were v Chelsea and Man City.

It isn't easy to win games.... if we could beat Exeter, it might prove significant, like the last time we beat them in the league at the CG in 85

How very dare you challenge my musings with facts...

It's all hindsight, isn't it. The only transfer that resulted in me rolling my eyes was Islam Feruz (who probably came in on a 'you can have Colkett and Dabo if you take Feruz' deal)

Pre-2014/15 - Power's contacts supplied us with a great link-up with Spurs. Oh how we (a lot of us) scoffed.

2015:

Town were W9 D1 L3 in L1 between 01/1 to 01/02 and only out of the automatic places by goal difference.

John Swift came in to accommodate a gap in midfield after Yaser and Mass went off to become big time in AFC. It was also probably too much, too soon for Jermaine Hylton.

Power/Cooper had followed Bristol City who did similar by bringing in two loan players but had a stronger squad overall.

We should have copied Karl Robinson at MKD by flooding the squad with loanees to prepare for all eventualities. I think MKD ended the season with 8 or 9 loan players this included keeping a hold of Dele Alli until the Summer (we only added Ricketts in March).

Preston brought in Sam Johnstone, Dan Johnson, Callum Robinson and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

Ultimately, Power took a gamble and it didn't work out.

2016:

Doughty and Sendles-White arrived in January.

Power probably didn't back Town due to it being a dead rubber of a campaign. Not defending him on that but not overly criticising either. There was no way that we could have replaced those who had departed the summer before.

2017:

Town sleepwalk into the abyss, flooding the squad with loan players who weren't up to the, ahem, 'realities' of winning or losing unlike the squad players Robinson brought in for MKD in 2015...

Power tried to salvage. Contacts/scouts/network let us all down. Big time.

2018:

Town were largely mismanaged by Flitcroft and Brown. A Play-Off place should have been achieved.

Power gave the keys to Flitcroft and it failed. It's probable that we've been better when Power has been more involved with the transfer element. That doesn't mean that he's a superstar at it either.

It's been really quite grim from the moment Nathan Thompson limped off in the 5-5 or Andrew Madley started the Play-Off Final in 2015. Depending on your view point.

Well I think we played quite well, we need to sign Sid at least on loan till the end of the season but a perm would be brilliant.

We need a better target man or a goalscorer, both if possible, the need for a target man would not be as great if Bayo was more consistant but a goalscorer is still badly needed as I and others intimated before the season started and we still do IMO.

We need a left back, similar to Hussey, who can defend and attack.

I think Power will have seen enough in Wellens so far to invest some money in new signings which we badly need, I feel we could offload Smith, Richards, McGlashan, Lancashire, Robertson and maybe Iandolo (out on loan) and free up wages for replacements. I also think that Toums if he gets fit will be a massive asset but if he doesn't fit with Wellens plans then maybe he could be offloaded too, be a shame as I think he has class when fit.

Mansfield offered very little against us yesterday and we could easily have claimed the win with better finishing, and also much better defending by Town.

If Walker leaves them in January for a loan to a higher league they will struggle to stay where they are in the league and then that fucks up Mingecrofts season.

A few views from Mansfield fans....

Quote
Swindon had done their homework very well

Swindon's 3 up front tactic worked well for them, but that Stags weren't entirely at the races.

I thought that Swindon had a great fitness level and kept their plan going almost to the end. Probably the most effective side we've played since Exeter.

Good point overall, Swindon definitely worked out how to stop our threats which worryingly left us toothless.

Swindon pressed high and forced the errors from everybody, they didn't give our defence one second to compose themselves with the ball.

Swindon had done their homework - they closed our back 3 down and stopped us taking quick free kicks and were generally up for it.

Swindon's plan of slowing down our free kicks and diving like a Stuka with a seized engine worked like a charm in breaking up play.

In the game I thought Swindon did a great job of frustrating us, we got more of the ball in the second half as they may have tired but they kept their shape well off the ball leading to us struggling to create many chances and looked a low quality game as a result.

Nope  :) in 2007/08 Wycombe finished 7th on 78pts. That top 7 ended;

MKD   97
Pboro  92
Hford  88
Sport  82
Rdale  80
Darlo  78
WycW 78

The rest were miles away with Chesterfield finishing 8th on 69pts. Also relegation was only 42pts going to none other than Mansfield. Chester finished way above that line on 47pts.

Also no :) 2005/06 Lincoln finished 7th on 66pts. That top 7 was;

Carlisle  86
Nhants  83
LeytnO  81
Grimsb  78
Cheltn   72
WycW   71
Lincoln  66

Relegation suffered on 49pts to another team of yellow affection, was good old Oxford. Stockport and 3 others survived on 52pts while another 4 only finished on 54pts.

So wrong then, the finish in 07 quoted originally was 08, and the 05 finish was in 06. Good idea though, it's easy enough to make mistakes, after all it's the TEF not a book for publishing.

OK, let's overlook the dating error, as it doesn't affect the points totals.... agree that early 70's tend to be about right for 7th spot in Div 4.  I've never quite managed to work out what (statistically) causes the outliers tending between 66 and 78. I've always assumed that it's something like a couple of teams who beat everybody, or a couple who lose to everybody, rather than what seems to be happening this season lots of draws, but it's guesswoirk rather than maths.

If we did go with something like 73 needed then we've 21 games to pick up 40 points, it will still require the sort of run, of which we don't look capable.

Personally I've come to hate the PO's, we've never been in the Div 4 variety..... imagine getting to Wembley and facing FGR, with a crowd of about 25 000.... in many ways I'd prefer, building a squad ready for a proper tilt at auto next season.

Lies, lies and damned statistics, or something like that!

Our form over the last 7 games is 3 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat.  12 points in 7 games.  Over 21 games it gets you 36 points, only 4 shy of the target you just set.  Hardly suggesting it is something well beyond us at all.  Would we get those 4 points, no idea, but is not like converting relegation form is it?  I think Wellens came here thinking he had a chance of getting this team into the play offs.  If he misses, given that run we went on before he joined he maybe gets a pass, but if he achieves the goal his stock rises and he gets to tell everyone Oldham was circumstances beyond his control with more belief.

Something tells me 70pts will be enough this season to get 7th. I'm basing it on how tight the points are at the "just-over-halfway" stage. I'm quite prepared to have this come back and bite me on the bum, even if it ends up being 71/72pts required.

I did say I'd revisit this "how are we shaping up" element in another 10 games. 1 more to go, my claim at the time was something like "if our form continues we should be around mid table battling with teams like Oldham and a chance at pushing for POs". That isn't far off but we've still one game to play.

The prospect of potentially being 10/11th come tomorrow afternoon and close the gap to 4pts on Exeter/FGR & Bury should be one to get us and the players motivated after several midnight Vermouths (us, not the players hopefully) and a new frontier of space reached by New Horizons to 2014 MU69. So New Year, New Horizons; maybe the Town can be inspired by their new managers way of playing and take 3pts off Exeter. It won't be easy but there seems to be unsettling activity at Exeter and that could affect the squad. Every little helps.

If we manage 3pts against Exeter that will leave us on 36pts with 60pts available. Okay we likely won't win all 20 but I would say on current form (and new additions) 10 is respectable and achievable. Add in 4 or 5 draws would put us on 70/71pts. That gives scope to lose 5 or 6 matches. It's going to be tight, hell we could just miss out on GD but it would be positive to take into the following season.

I don't want to get too far ahead though and will take another look when we hit 36 games. This should give us a more realistic idea of what is mathematically possible at that stage as well as combining other factors (such as current form, new signing impact, etc).

It's clear our recruitment in January is vital to whether we end up just above the dotted line or possibly even higher, and no Reg not the one between numbers 22 and 21  ;)

Happy New Year, hope it brings the Town 3pts and you all whatever you desire.

Something tells me 70pts will be enough this season to get 7th.

It is possible... in 16/17 70 points was enough for Blackpool, and then PO success.... however they were on 36 points at the same time (25 games).  Although those 3 or 4 points don't look that significant atm... they are.  It's difficult to leap up the 7 or so places we'd need.  It's why I was saying we needed 4 points from Grimsby/Numb, because we had a bit of momentum, and needed to keep it going, we got a point.  Not doing that and then picking up just the 2 points on the road, drops us back.

Winning games in an even league is difficult, which explains why we've only won 8 games, even Mansfield who've got a decent gaffer with a sizeable budget have only managed 10.

History tells us that Town sides usually fall away a bit after the window opens, especially Power time sides.... often like last season attrition, losing 2 centre halves, or window dealing weakening rather than strengthening, like 16/17
