Title: Tablet For Uni
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Saturday, October 6, 2018, 22:38:12
Son tells me he wants a tablet to use at uni. He has a laptop, but wants a touch screen to use in lectures and then the laptop in his room.

He's suggested a Samsung Galaxy TAB S3 9.7 SM-T820 WIFI 32GB Qualcomm 4096 MB Android.

Now, I'm sure I recall someone on here suggesting something else as budget tablet - Maybe a Kindle of some time and then removing the operating system and replacing with something else.

I've been looking on search but cant find it - Im syre it was this forum, but maybe not.

Anyway, whatever Tablet he gets has to be able to run autocad.

Any thoughts or advice?

Can't say much tablet wise.

But if it needs to run full AutoCAD with all the 3d stuff then a Windows tablet would be better.

The AutoCAD Mobile for Android and iOS only has 2d drafting.

The new Microsoft go is pretty good.

I think the Go is about £350 plus £100-150 for a keyboard plus £90 for a pen.

Starts to get a bit expensive.

Ipad 2018 is about £320. Galaxy Tab S3 is £350 (with a pen)

not sure if he needs 3D AutoCAD.

Just got a Samsung galaxy tab A 10.1 Great screen and cheap too. Depends what he wants from it. I'd guess AutoCAD is much better on a laptop/desktop but I've never used something like AutoCAD on a tablet.

I'm sure a variety of tablets will be easily accessible at uni.

My first thought when I read this was 'Oh, so they have electronics available for students and I won't need to buy anything?' Then, a nano second later I realised that you weren't trying to help me!  :(

Sorry mate, in hindsight it was probably a stupid comment. I sure as a father you are already worried about your son flying the nest. If its any consolation, i am sure he has had a great upbringing and has grown up to be a sensible young man.

Yep likewise. I'm sure your son will be absolutely fine. In fact many at Uni are shunning drink and drugs for strategy, word and board games cafes. Even lego clubs. Yes I'm sure they'll still get trollied now and again but it isn't so much a popular or "done" thing now.

At least that generation have cottoned on that going to uni doesn't guarantee them a future job but it certainly gives a bit more time to consider how they may well do.

All in all, good life experience and partially finding yourself are the best learning he'll gain from it and I'm certain one or two good friends will be made.

Sorry for any offence :)

for what its worth, i will say, dont skimp. I'm an apple guy and can't fault the iPad for casual use. Saying that, im not anti anything else. As wobbly bob said, if AutoCad is needed with full 3d capabilities you should look at the Microsoft Surface but beware they are not cheap although they are on their 4th or 5th generation by now so you might be able to pick up an older version for cheaper.

He's now said autocad isn't essential. I think he really wants the Samsung S3. So, Santa is starting to save!
