Here we go again. Oldham will be tough opposition, but I'll go for a 2-1 win.

Wildly optimistic.... if we can win this we might be on to something. A draw more realistic and acceptable.

I’m going today. Last time I went to see us against Oldham we lost a high scoring game and Oldham scored a beezer of a goal from 30 yard. I want to say 2-3 (Ajose May have scored)

As for today, interesting one, both sides have had half decent starts to the season and this could be a pre-cursor to a play off game come the end of the season. We’ve done well without Doughty and managed to paper over the cracks with under performing players such as Taylor and Richards (based on what I’ve read on here).

I’ll go 2-2. Adebayo and Keshi for us.

2-1 Swindon,

My dad passed away in December 2010 the day after Town’s game at Boundary Park was frozen off. I was telling him this and the last conscious thing I recall him mustering the strength to say was “I told’em Oldham” which he had said throughout his life. So I’m predicting a 2-1 win so I can repeat those words today.

Oldham unbeaten at the CG in the last 6 visits with 3 wins and 3 draws here, scoring 8 and us only getting 4. They don't have a very high following on the road, they have averaged 200 away fans in the last visits.

On Saturday they came back from being 3-1 down to draw 3-3 at home with Col U.

They sit in 6th place (equal with us) with exactly the same record of 4 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats so far this season scoring 1 less than us but conceding 5 less, hence their higher league position.

Their record so far this season in the league is LDWDWWLWD (with 2 defeats in the cups too) both their defeats have come at home this season to MKD and Newport both by a single goal.

On the road Oldham have been very hard to beat, despite their relegation last season they have only lost once on their travels since January with the only loss a defeat at Wigan in March a run of DWDLDDDDDDWW.

I would be happy with a draw today in front of 6,156 fans with 275 from Ooop North.

2-1 defeat with Anderson scoring.

I would also be happy with a draw, but we have a good potential to win it. Which Swindon turns up, its quite interesting.

Bury don't win away, Yeovil don't concede goals, Oldham don't lose away, Swindon don't beat Oldham at home.

Surely that's all adding up to a Swindon win today.

3-1 - Doughty to come of the bench for 10 minutes to bag the 3rd.

I like your thinking KT... if we could get a win today, then it would be a significant step.

If we are to do anything this season then we need to get a consistency and string together a run of wins, but the same applies to most of the teams in Div 4... only Lincoln atm look to have that.

And even they have been beaten in the league by Crawley and in the cups vs Blackburn and Mansfield which is only 1 less in total than us.

I had a glance at the league table after reading this expecting to find Oldham are runaway leaders...the inferiority complex which has swept some of our fan base in recent years is frankly frightening.

Get a grip.

I see Oldham include 3 rumoured recent ex Swindon targets Ishmael Miller, Chris O'Grady and Callum Lang.

I would like to think that Bayo has the pace to cause a lot of problems for the slow ageing Peter Clarke at CB today.

Their best player, striker Sam Surridge is out injured today, but they are still playing with 3 recognised strikers today.

Seems like both are trying to play free-flowing stuff. The ref appears to be trying to supress that and blowing for nearly everything, except when it's in the box.

A chance is definitely brewing for either side. Who has the confidence to take it. Could determine the winner. Decent match for L2.

Good solid first half, better of the two teams, look a little more threatening.

I said it last week and it came back to bite me, so, Taylor has been tosh.

Adebayo is a threat, I can see why they play him wide.  He has the beating of the player in the air and loves to cut in.

Alzate has got a bit stuck on the ball at times today, very Anderson like.

Very similar to last weekend.

What on earth was Reg on about - Wildly optimistic!!!  Both teams are on equal points, we are at home.  Of course Oldham could win here, but even basic logic suggests a home win is not wildly optimistic but more likely a slight probability!!!

I think we should be able to go on to win this, won't be easy, but we are the better team going forward.

Not a bad performance at all so far from Town, passing it well, all the midfield doing well even Dunne.

Toums looks head and shoulders the best player on the pitch for me.

Defence looks fairly solid and getting in blocks for almost all shots before they get too close.

I know its a broken record bt Taylor and Richards again are the 2 weakest links, Richards not won too many chellenges so far and his hold up play is non exiustant, Taylors dead balls are all poor and every cross is over the head of the striker he is aiming for he has also needlessly put us under pressure 3 times with his pissing around on the touchline.

We just need to create a few better chances, Bayo or Anderson looks most likely to score.

Woolf looks a little uncomfortable with the pace of Lang up against him but hes hes done ok and is still better than Dunne in the RB slot.

Oldham have come to play football and have probably had the better chances but we have had more of them and more of the play.

I know what you are saying, but he's causing them issues.

I would be inclined to agree. While it does seem frustrating to see Crazy Legs out wide, I do think PB is making the right call here. Because one release into the box from Alzate or Dave and we know Crazy is dangerous anywhere inside 25yrds. Alzate reminds me of an unpolished version of Jesse Lingard. You know he has ability to pick out a world class pass and has long range ability too. Needs to be encouraged to do that a little more. Hopefully his goal last week gave him confidence to do that. Test the keepers from range at this level and someone like Richards can sniff in and poach the scraps. Ths game hangs in the balance and maybe just one good set piece delivery could produce a goal. We know we can deliver it. If Taylor delivers 15 bad set pieces but the 16th flies in or finds Crazy then we'll be happy. Keep pressing Town.

Nice to see LMc barking organisation at the defence. Like a keeper should. Nothing worse as a CB than a keeper giving you crap for not leaving his calls but it builds reassurance that the man between the sticks is confident in his role. This helps the defence develop as a unit.

Om another note, have we fixed our Rolex? Kicked off at bang on 3pm, not the usual 3.02 or 3.03pm that we've become so famous for. Maybe the ref has his own watch. That works ;)

He is but I wish the problems were being caused IN the box not outside of it, if he had a decent striker waiting in the box then its not an issue but Richards has again done f all so far.

The view of an Oldham fan on their forum...

Quote

Nothing game really.  We look solid and tuff to break down, like most of our away games this season.  Nothing up top, ball not sticking, Swindon playing in front of us with no real danger.

Branger had half a chance on the half volley from the keepers flapping at a cross but it was difficult to keep down, Miller should maybe have played Branger through when we had a break on but apart from that we haven't looked like scoring from open play.

Absolutely shocking refereeing at times, good Town performance, Oldham were happy with the draw all 2nd half and had a lot of timewasting tactics, only one side looked like creating chances and scoring and it wasn't Oldham!

Toums, Alzate and Anderson all great today, Dunne, Nelson and Lancashire all excellent too.

Richards was poor and Taylor probably poorer otherwise they all played well.

Madness at the end Taylor sent off. Nelson booked and two Oldham players booked. I've no idea why Taylor was singled out for the red? He's usually peacemaker. Knowing this ref it was mistaken identity. Likely we'll appeal.

Was just about to say, a good advert for L2 football spoilt by an inept ref. Who had know idea how to let a game flow. In the 2nd half Odham truly were playing for a point. Te bottom line today:

We didn't capitalise on our chances. 11 shots off, 0 on. Therein tells us the picture today. Although this was a good point, if one had won it would've been a great win for either. These two teams will be there or abouts come May.

In other news, Forest Vegan Rovers STILL haven't lost and I think that's their 7th draw!

2nd half was a bit more ragged, fair enough result.  The first 10 of that half we were poor, mostly thanks to Taylor have one of two impacts on the game - giving the ball away and putting us under pressure, or fucking up in defence.  Got better as the half wore on, but never really looked like scoring, bar maybe Anderson being put in on the left.

Taylor getting himself sent off was a fair enough assessment of his overall performance. Sorry, I know you shouldn't knock your own players, but what the fans were applauding, other than his self sacrifice in pulling their player down when clean through because he hadn't sat far enough back to cover as the last man, I don't know.  He was awful today, a real Dunne of a performance.

I want to blame the ref for the 2nd half, but Oldham were niggly and were too impetuous in the tackle at times.

Diagouraga deserved the MotM, classy performance from him.  Backed up the one last weekend, hopefully he's where he needs to be fitness wise and this is what we get for the rest of the season.

Think the period Adebayo played in the middle role showed to me why he is better wide in a 3.  Got a bit lost in the battle rather than being able to run at players.  Be interesting to see the option Woollery may bring.

McGlashan flattered to deceive in his cameo.

Overall, good effort, certainly a team more likely to be challenging the top end than the bottom and Oldham seemed a well organised bunch that will grind out some results.  One of the better teams we have played without being good, if you get my drift.

Reg will be happy, that we staved off the inevitable defeat.  backs to the wall, should have lost it by 3 type of performance no doubt :-)

Got to admit I didn't see what happened with him, he had their player by the throat earlier in the game and was lucky not to have a yellow for that, hes become a liabilty unfortunately.

He scored a good free kick last week but thats his only contribution to this season and for me Alzate takes a better more consitant free kick, he is of no benefit to the team now. LB is a priority and another striker.

Oldham fans views...

Quote
Came for the point, got the point. Should have won at the end but they cheated.

Take a point.  Clean through at the end..... would of done the same if I was the Swindon lad, would of expected an Oldham player to do likewise to be fair. We never looked like conceding, they played in front of us, we cleared our lines, rinse and repeat. Defence is solid.

Decent point on the road, exactly what we set up for.

Great shithousery from their lad at the end, - something our squad is definitely missing.

No doubt about the red if it's a professional foul it was given for. Possibly saved us a point, one decent thing that Taylor did all game.

Their guy massively overreacted to it, though. There was no malice in it.

I had missed the actual challenge. So hands up. However watching back, it was a good distance from goal and wasn't denying a goalscoring opportunity.  I'd expect us to appeal it. However, it could be silver lining if Taylor is "rested".

Taylor took one for the team,  and didn't have much choice really.

Good game and a solid if uninspiring performance. Alzate is very skillfull and links up well but lacks experience and a final ball. Dunne was good enough, Anderson seems to be growing into a decent player. Diagouraga was my MOM.

Either Oldham defended our crosses really well or they where shit. Bit of both I think.

The challenge by Taylor.

I think to be sent off on the half way line was quite unlucky.

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Oldham Athletic official match day thread
Post by: RobertT on Saturday, September 29, 2018, 16:25:34
I think our crossing was poor, any that fell between the 6 yard box were easily caught by the keeper, so not enough threat on them.

Alzate has the most assists, near the top in the league as well, so he can certainly produce a good final ball.  Today he tried too much, a bit like Anderson does, and  it meant he wasted some good positions.

Probably try Romanski at left back.  If Taylor has any self awareness he'd have a word with Brown and let him know he'll hang his boots up in the next window, to get Brown working on a replacement.  In the meantime he can work o his coaching by helping Romanski take his place.

He gave the player the run on him originally, so covering his own mistake.  I think their player gets to the box, neither of our two would have caught him, so I think it was fair enough.   Some refs would probably give the benefit of the doubt, but I don't think there is enough there to get a result on appeal.

I agree.

I think Romanski will do ok at LB as a temporary solution but I would prefer a more experienced fullback there long term, that is definately the weak link in our team now.

I feel similar about Richards, hes past his best now and not found any form at all since his injury in the Summer. I would still like a striker who is in the poacher mode like Ajose who only needs half chances to score in the box.

I like Andersons running and approach play but his finishing is dire most of the time.

It's a crop, there's no malice in the challenge. For me it's a professional foul and with the position of halfway line, Diagouraga (I think) and another tracking back, the Oldham player maybe gets to our box (players generally run faster without ball than dribbling with). I suppose we're splitting hairs. Maybe one of our two gets to him before he positions himself for a shot. I don't think we deny them a goal scoring op. For me it's a very certain yellow. A red from there is fairly harsh. Had it been combined with a sliding rash tackle then yeah, every day. Can't really label it a "tackle from behind" as they're next to each other.

Ahh fuck it, I just wish we'd capitalised and got the win. A decent point on reflection later on no doubt.

I just spat my tea out. Truly special indeed. I might design my own "shit football platform" and sell it to the FA. At a cut down price. Around £50m? It won't fucking do what it's supposed to do and there will be no customer support (well, a bot may reply after a month providing an FAQ) and we won't give a fuck if we don't provide all the services we say we wll. In fact many matches that you've paid for will just display a black screen with no explanation.

Anyone want in? I'll happily split it 50/50. £25m each and then sack it off after a season.

one thing mentioned on the FB group of interest that I didn't notice so can't confirm - we've made the pitch narrower.

something that aren't allowed to do after the season starts.

allegedly. as I said didn't notice so may be bobbins

Not read back yet so here are my thoughts.

A tough tough game against a very organised, albeit toothless Latics side, who I though defended brilliantly from start to finish. They blocked everything and their centre backs cleared corner after corner as we managed not to create a single clear cut opportunity. (Neither did they to be fair)

I thought we look better defensively, Sid Nelson would head an anvil if you chucked it up in the air and I thought Olly Lancashire looked better today. Wolf at RB looks a solid acquisition also. Dunne had his best game for ages that I have seen and well deserved his applause when taken off. DT looked well improved and looked comfortable sat in front of the defence. Alzate oozes class but just tries to do a bit too much. If he can tone that down, he’ll be unplayable at this level. I love Adebayo as well, he is big, powerful and has good feet, nothing fell today but he still worked his socks off.

Negatives, Taylor was poor, you can’t question his work rate but he wasn’t at the races today. Poor deliveries, risky passes etc. Best thing he did was take one for the team in the last minute taking a deserved red as Oldham broke (I doubt they would have scored though, they were crap going forward). I thinking Richards is struggling as well in our formation, he won a few good headers second half but generally looked below par.

Reg will be happy, that we staved off the inevitable defeat.  backs to the wall, should have lost it by 3 type of performance no doubt :-)

I said this was a difficult game and a draw would be acceptable.  Had we won I think it might have been a strong marker about improving prospects, but that was always hope over expectation, and as all Town fans should know it's the hope that gets you.

10 games in is usually a reasonable amount to take a look at how the season is shaping up.... what it tells us is that we're on the same ponts as last season, there or thereabouts but still short of being wholly convincing, a bit like the other 11 sides who are 2 points apart around the PO slots.

There are a lot of draws in this league, as there isn't much too choose between most sides. If Mansfield win their game in hand v Crewe they'll jump to 5th from 14th, 3 points of auto, however such is the nature of Div 4 this season, it wouldn't be a surpise to see them pass up the opportunity.

Cobblers up next, who are looking a bit suspect, along with Grimsby, Macc and Morecambe, whom despite their good win today, you'd expect to struggle.   Wouldn't be surprised to see Cobbelers sack Austen this week, so we might catch the wrong end of that.

Hold the back page.... just noticed there's a full round of games on Tuesday... apparently we're at Gresty Road.

With the Matty Taylor professional foul, let's not forget Crawley did it to us when we were 2-1 up when Alzate was on the edge of the box then go on to equalise.

Taylor makes the foul in his own half so what is the clearer goal scoring opportunity? At best it's a point gained back from the two lost at Crawley.

We must have the most red cards in the entire football league

I did wonder what our record number of red cards in a season is  :hmmm:  got to be relatively recent, as you could commit GBH back in the day and not get anything more than a stern word.

Seem to remember Cooper's sides having poor disciplinary records.

Cooper's 13/14 side had 7 reds .... Nathan Byrne 2, JMac, TAH 2, Nathan, and Alex Pritchard, my instinct tells me that is likely the most in a season.  Can't be arsed to do the research.

I said this was a difficult game and a draw would be acceptable.

You also said, in response to someone going for a 2-1 win, that was wildly optimistic.  It clearly wasn't.  At worst it was a hopeful aspiration, as the game then showed, as we were probably marginally better.  Suggesting a 2-1- win against that Oldham team is wildly optimistic was clearly over emphasizing some sort of odd assessment that we are not very good.  We didn't "battle" to the draw, we were comfortable.

I've said from the first game, we look good for the play offs.  Today backed that up, not quite enough for top three for me, but certainly more than enough to be in the hunt for top 7.  You obviously do not concur, because you keep suggesting a draw is the most we should hope for in games.  That's fine, it's opinions, but you also tell people you only look at the evidence, facts and data.  They all suggest we are in the hunt, they all suggested we should be more than in the game against Oldham.  You can tell us you've seen enough that we are poor or no better than mid table strugglers if you think that, but at least commit to it.

Oh, and my opinion may be wrong, we may end-up struggling by the end of the season.  It's just that, right now, nothing suggests that to be the case.  We've had one poor game, and one awful one, some so so and some good.

To Crewe, a game we really could be going to with confidence of getting a positive result.

You kept on saying we'd make the PO's last year... we didn't.

If you read PV's breakdown of recent Town games v Oldham at the CG and looked at their record on the road.... one defeat this year at Wigan, despite relegation, added to their concession of a single goal away in Div 4, should be enough to tell you that getting a win however desirable was a tall order.

Interestingly Crewe, next up are decent at Gresty Road and have only conceded 1 goal.

Your opinion may have been wrong Rob but you had the balls to express one on a public forum where vultures are waiting to sink their claws into those whose musings weren't 100% accurate. & do so without actually sticking their neck out to offer a solid prediction themselves. Perhaps the red card is a blessing of sorts. If whoever plays out there (probably Romanski, I suppose it could feasibly be Knoyle) can make a respectable case, it will be much easier for Brown to make the call.

I will always have great respect for Taylor - we’ve been shafted by so many 35+ year olds during my time, but he has genuinely cared and last season he was our best player by a stretch. But yes, although there are still moments of beauty, his number is now up. I don’t really know what that tweet was about - there’s not much to discuss in my opinion.

We did fine overall. Dave now looks like the player who we thought we’d signed - a class act. Dunne really did bust a gut today - and managed to keep his head and discipline, which he normally seems to lose when he’s playing well. For the first time all season we failed to score and, unfortunately, we didn’t work their keeper - just as they didn’t really work ours. A fair result.

I can read plenty well, but thanks for caring.

My issue is with your specific line about it being wildly optimistic, it wasn't.  A 5-0 win would classify under that heading, not 2-1.

We have been beaten by the best team in the league and had an off day against Bury, so it should be just as likely that Oldham would have thought a point would be a good result - you know, the team who made a substitution with 30 seconds of injury time to go to specifically be sure of earning that point.

And no, we didn't make the play offs, and we should have.  The team we had and the opposition we played, we should have been able to reach the play offs.  We were close.  So close in fact that you previously stated how poorly Brown had done, at least statistically.  We could probably agree we fluffed it when we had an opportunity to do more.

This season, we have largely been pretty good.  Our form over 10 games is good enough for the play offs if stretched over a season.  You can argue if you think it will get worse, but you always tell us to use the evidence.  The evidence backs up being optimistic.  Knock yourself out though.  At a guess, you'd suggest that having 10 points by now would be an achievement, something we should hope for more than expect ( I can't be arsed to check your pre-match "predictions" to confirm).  So there's one thing, Brown is over performing for you.

Fantastic summary on Taylor. He's earned his stripes.

I really don’t feel that he needs to retire mid-season - even this month the guy has scored an inch-perfect free kick, pinged in an (underrated) 50 yard cross for the MK equaliser and contributed towards 3 clean sheets. We are not in crisis territory.

90 minutes, 40 times is way beyond him. But half an hour here and there is well within reach. I’d love there to be one final big moment to remember him by, because Matty Taylor is exactly what a modern footballer should be. Someone who, for all the £s in the bank, really wants to play 4th division football for Swindon Town every week until his body really won’t allow it.

Granted, I’ve been drawn into biting at all the egotistical Smeeton bullshit enough times, but let’s all rise above it and talk about something more worthy of conversation.

Great points about MT. I did feel sorry for him late in the 2nd half when, despite being clearly knackered, he made a lung busting run to create the angle for a cross & was given a dreadful pass by JMC.

An ok game. Would have been better if the ref had let it flow a bit more.

We needed to up the tempo with the passing just a little, but trying to break down 10 men behind the ball is always difficult.

So 10 games in.
I think we are still in transition (but with enough to be in contention for the plays offs), with having to accommodate two 35+ year old players.
Taylor still looks to have decent energy levels and can still offer something.
Richards appears to be struggling and needs some help, which will hopefully arrive in January, particularly as I can't recall an effort on target yesterday from any of ours.

We've failed to beat 3 of the 4 relegated teams at home and the Cobblers are next up.
Not sure there is any significance in that, other than pointing to a difficult start, on paper at least, in terms of fixtures at home?

Proper melee at the end. Just like the good old days under McMahon.
Probably a 'failure to control players' charge on the way for both clubs.

The red card. Clear goal scoring opportunity. 60 yards away from the goal. In League 2. A tad harsh.
The letter of the law I guess, but we've had similar before from a lot a closer in, where the opposition player hasn't even been carded.

Interesting selection problem with Knoyle available again.
Wolf has done ok and so has Lancashire in the last couple of games, but Knoyle offers more going forward.
Putting him in at left back could be seen as unnecessary and risky tinkering.
Next game is away, so maybe best to leave as is, and just bring Romanski in at LB.

And finally. Sid is great.
We should try and sign him. There is no harm is asking!
Nearest thing we've had to a Shaun Taylor?
Swindon expects....

I’d love to sign Sid Nelson. There was one point in the second half where the ball was at about waist height and he flew at it with a diving header to clear (possibly for a throw in) when it was more than feasible that he could have taken a kick in the face.

It’s evident that he is a bit of a nutter but I think he is exactly what we need at Centre back. Lancs was much better today, could it be him and Nelson may flourish as a CB partnership?

I expect Nelson is the only one of the loanees who could feasibly be ours on a permanent in January. I totally agree that he would be a cracking signing, and spending 2 or 3 years down here could be a real benefit to both us and him.

Lancashire is getting better, but that was a real hospital ball that he played sideways in about the 88th minute. On another day that could have undone everything. He really needs to accept that he's the most limited player in the team.

It's a good point that our first 6 homes are against the 6 teams who are new to the division - I hadn't noticed this. None of them have more points than us, which is no great surprise given that only 4 teams do.

Well it looks like some Oldham fans were expecting Real vs Barca yesterday judging by some of the comments.

Quote
We were absolutely lacking in ambition against a poor team today. I gave away 4 hours of my life (far less than those who travelled from Oldham) and £23 to watch an absolutely dire game of football.

It is not just at the Prima Donna level that football is dying. More games like this and it deserves to. Two teams near the top of the table, hard to say which was worse.

OK, miserable twat here. I spent 2 hours on the road - far less than most who travelled from Oldham to be fair - and forked out £23 for a match that was absolutely devoid of entertainment.

It was obvious after 15 mins that Swindon were a distinctly average team and that with just a hint of ambition 3 points were there for the taking. We never looked like scoring.

This is not good enough. The other 411 who travelled today deserve to be entertained (I don't get to many games these days, so will take the punishment). Much more of this and, God help me, I'll be tempted to side with Kusunga, Archie & co.

It was pretty awful to watch today, we didn’t just come for a point, we came for 0-0, in fact both teams could have played rush keeper and it still might have finished 0-0

All in all, left frustrated at our lack of desire to win 3 points against yet another very ordinary team

Weird league this. Swindon won 3-0 at Yeovil last week who won 6-0 at Newport the week before who beat us the week before that, so lineally that’s progress. We could well have won today without the last minute sending off.

Interesting. They’re in quite an unusual position given that they’ve drawn 9 away league games since February, and were relegated midway through this to their lowest level in 40 years or something. An away draw is a bit of an everyday occurrence, and they probably just assumed that in dropping down they’d win a few more.

We have been a polar opposite - we went from November 2016 until February 2018 without drawing a single away game. So I guess we currently treat an away point with a bit more respect.

Not sure what the Oldham fans were moaning about. For a 0-0 I quite enjoyed it. We looked a completely different team to the one that cocked up every previous home game but managed to get out of jail in 3 of them.

We looked solid, professional, confident and organised - which if that is going to be the norm from now on - is going to cement us in the top 7.

Dave was superb, as was Anderson, defence minus the usual all piss and panic we've become do used to was, thankfully, absent.

Dunne for Doughty has curtailed our offence but improved our defence. Personally, I'd go with Doughty as we did look a bit impotent yesterday.

Vast improvement in overall performance and bodes well

Good summation. Unfortunately I think Oldham were exactly the same and therefore the two sides effectively cancelled each other out. We huffed and puffed but ultimately couldn’t blow the blue house down.

We should be looking at at least 4 points from the next 2 games which will see us in the play offs at least. Have you seen how tight the league is? A streaky 1-0 yesterday would have been fantastic but a point and a clean sheet not to be sniffed at.

Brown certainly has a tricky selection for Tuesday.... options but not quite obvious ones. Last season Iandolo filled in at LWB for a bit, as he could get on set pieces.  Alternatively he could use Romanski there and have a back 4 of centre halves, by sticking KK on the bench.... with Dunne and Toumani in there, would be a strong looking defensive unit, but losing forward potential. Having got back to back clean sheets, the least disruption makes sense.

At the outset, this season looked to be about getting the maximum out of Doughty and Diagouraga, I kind of assumed playing together, but so far it's just been a couple of short appearances... half hour v Tranny and Toumani was subbed off then a half and a bit at Crawley.  So we don't yet know if this key axis works. I'm guessing MD if not fit for Sat won't be fit for Tuesday.

Of course we have to wonder whether Saturday, Tuesday is too much for Lancashire when considering a possible defensive lineup.

thought it was also a decent game for a 0-0. I said I'd consider Crewe on Tuesday if they played well and I'll be going up now.

as against Franchise when i last attended, strikers do worry me. Richards really isn't getting a lot of the ball and adebayo- I love the bloke when running with the ball and causing problems. barely won a header though and surprising for someone that tall.

anyone else wonder why toumani- The beast that he is. doesn't go up for any corners or freekick? it's not as if he is pacey which the last man usually is.

a tidy performance. if anyone was to win- it should have been us based on intent and the little openings created.

best game iv seen Anderson play live. in. probably forever. wish he would do more as he can be a fantastic player.

nothing worse than seeing a poor striker display and then getting home and see Norris has banged in again! hopefully woolery is back soon

My guess would be that Lancashire will start and Richards won’t.

I think Richards still has a fair bit to offer but, like Taylor, he just can’t cope with what we’re asking of him. He’d probably be more likely to score off the bench these days.

Noticed that Alzate took most of the corners with Taylor hanging back - which led to him getting the red being the last man. Obviously Brown has recognised he is slow getting back. Whoever takes over at LB for the next 3 games has a great chance to gain a regular starter

If Brown is as good as his word re round pegs then Knoyle must start at RB with the Wolf returning to CB. Bit harsh on Lancashire after a couple of good performances but i feel there is always a mistake in him.

Romanski at LB for me. Woolery can only be a few weeks away from being ready - replacement for Richards.

Is it 3 games or 1 for his offence ?
Thought 3 was for violent offences

Think he'll only be unavailable for one game.

Would be nice to have him as an option off the bench to concentrate on getting good balls into the box for 20 minutes, could still be a great asset if used wisely.  Need a KK clone at LB, we'd be very strong.

Guess the ref may have imterpreted Taylor's kick as a violent act... rather than perhaps denying a golascoring opportunity. We'll soon find out.

This is what the rule says and the key point is that the ref interpreted it as no attempt to play the ball. That's a sending off as he clipped the heels when the player had pushed the ball in front of but not violent conduct as the tackle wasn't dangerous.

The doubt has to be if it's a clear opportunity if the tackle was made in our own half.

DENYING A GOAL OR AN OBVIOUS GOAL-SCORING OPPORTUNITY

Where a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a deliberate handball offence the player is sent off wherever the offence occurs.

Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offending player is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.

A player, sent off player, substitute or substituted player who enters the field of play without the required referee's permission and interferes with play or an opponent and denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity is guilty of a sending-off offence

The following must be considered:

distance between the offence and the goal

general direction of the play

likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball

location and number of defenders

Taylor's foul was as cynical as they come, but you can never call that "violent".

I'm fine with Brown defending him in the press, but please don't appeal it. You'd get a yellow for such a deliberate foul just about anywhere on the pitch, and it certainly struck me as being a clear goalscoring opportunity a split second beforehand.

Too often this season we are leaving the wrong man back and being vulnerable from our own set pieces. At FGR it was happening time after time. Leaving someone like McGlashan as the last man would make sense.
