Title: Swindon Town vs Tranmere Rovers Official Match Day Thread
Post by: Ginginho on Saturday, August 18, 2018, 06:47:40
My first game of the season so looking forward to seeing the new recruits.

Richards could be back in the squad today after recovering from shoulder surgery quicker than expected.
James Dunne also available for selection.

In the last eight games against Tranmere, we've won 7 and drawn 1 and have won the last 5.

No doubt Paul Mullin will score against us today but I expect a hard fought 2-1 victory in front of 6,700 fans.

I’m also going today and quite looking forward to it.

I think Tranmere are pretty dangerous up front but have issues at the back with injuries a plenty so hopefully we can take advantage of that. Tranmere boast Olly Banks and Paul Mullin and their fans have been very impressed with Banks so far this season.

I’m going for an entertaining 2-2 draw. Taylor and Adebayo and Banks and Norwood for them.

Big spending Notts County got thumped 4-0 at home to Yeovil last night. It's still a bit silly season so very hard to predict.

2-2.

Tranmere have plenty of attacking threat, having re-signed pacy winger Mottley-Henry on loan from Barnsley, with Norwood, Jennings and Banks also likely to start. Mullin will be a sub. Will be more of a test than Macclesfield and Forest Green so the defence better not make any further cock-ups. Cant see Taylor starting at left back in a 4 otherwise he will be targeted. Have a feeling we may play 3-5-2 with Knoyle and Mcgleshan as wing backs, Taylor and Anderson rested, Dunne as advanced  midfield and Doughty pushed up with Adebayo.

Vigs, Nelson, Conroy, Lancashire, Knoyle, Mcgleshan, Toums, Smith, Dunne, Doughty and Adebayo
Subs McCormick, Romanski, Taylor, McCourt, Azate, Anderson, Richards,

If Richards plays I think we will win, if not we probably won’t score (unless we get a penalty) and will probably lose 1-0.

Seems mad that we are relying on the fitness of a 36 year old striker.
Either that or Adebayo needs a Fjortoft type turn around in form (hopefully before January)

Whether it will be a frustrating one in the end is the $64k question

this.

The good news is I've got family commitments so won't be going today. So it's sure to be nailed on the former.

We need to see some signs of progress today... keeping a clean sheet and someone scoring from open play other than Doughty.  PB made the point that going a goal up might help...

Watching our back 4 warming up it looks incredibly lightweight, with the best will in the world Romanski isn't going to win much in the air.

Why has this centre half recruitment not been sorted?

If so many really have turned us down ask yourselves why.

You can’t blame Brown- it’s time the owner stopped hiding behind managers and accepted the blame.

Well half time. Could quite easily still win this if we show some composure but would paper over the cracks. Defensively I don't remember a worst back line, Romanski needs removing for his own protection and Lancashire needs to retire. Going forward it's very confused and always seems to be the wrong ball at the wrong time.
One ray of hope is that Tranmere seem to be carrying a lot of weight so could tire.

Whilst he's going to struggle with little or no money to spend. His record at STFC is very poor.
He's been worse than Flip flop and that's saying something. Reminds me of DW had a good spell as a manager once but its over now.

The two centre backs are playing as individuals, with a left back who looks punch drunk when defending.

Trying to be too incisive in midfield, need to keep it a bit more simple and pick the pace-up instead.  Anderson is a fucking idiot, in footballing terms, no sense that he is learning.

McGlashan needs to wise-up 2nd half otherwise he will get himself sent off.  He's looked a threat though.

I get why we made the sub, not sure on the player though.  Might have been better to drop him deep and take off one of the back two.

Smith is a nearly player - he tries maybe too many wonder balls, if he could just settle a bit I think he'd be a good player.

Not the best performance on the ball, maybe this time we will be better in the 2nd half - Tranmere look lost in the central midfield area, giving us too much time (which we are wasting) but look a real threat still with our dodgy defence.  Reckon we will go on to get a draw at least though.

Need to sort this defensive gap out though, you can't carry on giving teams goals like we are - nobody looks like they know how to play as a unit.

We have a lack of investment, just like everyother season. That's why there haven't been any defenders signed.Still we have a club to support, which is run without losses and every year players are sold or let go, so cheaper ones can be recruited.

Thought we played well in the 2nd half, did what we needed to do and could have had a couple more.  Richards showed that he may well be the answer - hardly touched the ball, scored one and nearly had another.  Alzate looks classy, I like him and Doughty took control of midfield.

However, Lancashire with a minute to go shows us where our problems lie!  Easy pass shanked into touch gifting them a chance to put some pressure on.

Adebayo looks a good player, needs some coaching but there is a player to work with.  Anderson is frustrating the living daylights out of me.

Well we got one of the desired outcomes with goals from elsewhere, but not the other of defensive tightness.  Still an important win, as it would have been easy for heads to go down, and PB would have come under immense pressure for his job.  Especially as 2 away games in a row now at Crawley and FGR, and the defence doesn't look capable of surviving on the road.

2 games two 3.2 wins for me this season.
Thought after 15 mins we were gonna get stuffed, Tranmere looked decent up until the sending off. Didn't look that bad after it tbf.
They seemed to need only a couple of passes to get into our box while we took an age to get into theirs.

Adebayos goal was a good one, took it well. Been impressed with him both times have seen him, bit of urgency and he will be superb. Seems to be head down and too casual going forward.
Team improved with Alzate coming on, not scared of running at ppl where it counts.
Richards showed promise when came on but obv still coming back so will improve.

Defence, we need one and soon. Romanski looked out of place and scored the luckiest goal seen in a while.

At least the team didn't cave as in previous seasons but had some belief to win it, albeit v 10 men.

I’m 4 from 4 this season and I need to rethink my assertion that we won’t/surely can’t keep making these howlers.

Today was the pits. Romanski was shitting himself every time he got the ball. Need a fit Conroy plus new CB and Taylor really has to be binned. He’s lumbering around and is the weakest link.

Problem is, now the defenders expect to make a mistake - you can see it. Self fulfilling implosion.

Thank God for Doughty. Really pleased for Adebayo, too.

Until the red card I thought we were at sixes and sevens. Romanski made a mistake for the first and then more weak defending from a long kick left Tranmere two up and us facing a huge battle. Thankfully their lad decided to make a stupid challenge and we had a lifeline. We scored a good goal after good work from Doughty and a nice finish by Adebayo. That said, despite the man advantage Tranmere looked dangerous on the break.

I though Brown changed the game with the subs, Rico for Dave and Alzate for Smith. Rico scored a beat equaliser expertly picked out by Alzate and then Romanski scored an absolute fluke to give us a win. Yes 3 points are very welcome but God only knows what would have happened had Tranmere not had a red card.

For us it’s evident that our defence needs an overhaul. Romanski is nowhere near ready for first team football at Centre back on that showing and Olly Lancashire needs to be replaced as well. We are so weak in this area, PB needs to strengthen there and quickly. I wasn’t massively impressed with either Diagouraga or Smith, Dave didn’t get involved much and Smith despite looking busy and wanting the ball gave it away a lot. I suspect he is better as a defensive midfielder as he seems to love a tackle.

Clearly in Doughty and Alzate we have 2 gems at this level. Alzate’s assists were excellent, picking out Richards and Romanski instead of just whacking the ball into the box. I thought McGlashan worked hard but was well controlled by their monster number 6 who I hoped would be clownlike but was strong as an ox. Rico scores goals, pure and simple.

Not perfect but get 2 decent centre backs and I think this side will do well.

After my criticism of the attacking play and defensive play last week, it's only fair to say how good that looked going forward. Somehow, however, the defence looked worse. I'd be embarrassed if I'd played like that and I'm 44.

Well, well, well.

After seeing the goals, and some in match comments here, every criticism that was leveled at the defense after 20 minutes was valid then and remain valid now.

We've seen 3 home games, and 5 cock ups for goals. That isn't bad luck.

But the 10 men allowed us to paper over the cracks. And I'm delighted about getting 3 points. Its obvious we have more work to do recruiting wise to be competitive in the race for promotion.

We were a shambles at the back and have to be grateful to their player that got sent off, because had they have kept attacking us we would probably have been 4 down at half time.

Once they sat back and tried to defend their lead we got back into the game, that’s not going to happen every week.

That said, hopefully Brown can sort out the defence because the midfield is good & with Richards back we look decent up front

Did ginghino stay in the kitchen this match?

Nah, I actually went today :)

Thoroughly enjoyed that.
Luckily they had a player sent off which completely changed the game as we were dead and buried even at 15 minutes to be honest.
Lancashire is awful and Romanski, did OK for the most part but isn't anywhere near ready for first team football.
We need at least one decent centre back to come in on loan.

Thought the substitution was a bit strange but worked really well, Richards was excellent when he came on and hopefully can stay fit as he will be our main goalscorer this season.
Alzate looked really good also when he came on and attacking wise, we looked really good and should've won comfortably.

Taylor was my MOM, he was excellent today and his legs have not gone judging by today as on more than one occasion he prevented a one on one with chasing back and tackling. He was spraying the ball about with ease, spreading the play and looked good today.

Anderson was anonymous first half but was much better second half, thought Smith was good too, put a lot of effort in and broke up play well.

An enjoyable afternoon and a great result.

This is something brought in this season, two yellows in a match and he is out of the dug out!  He could also receive a straight red if the ref deems it - possibly for swearing (and Brown does like to swear during a game!).  He got it today, I think, for kicking the ball away at a Tranny throw-in!!

As regards the game, our own worst enemies today again!  The player that frustrates me is McGlashan, looks to have all the skill and certainly puts a shift in but rarely is there any end product.  We were undone with their two goals by the pace that they used against us, whereas our build-ups are much slower.  Inject a bit of pace, get a commanding centre-back (or two) in and we'll have a decent season.

I like the look of Smith, although today he always wanted an extra touch and his passing was off. If we are going to persist with a midfield three I don’t see us being able to accommodate him and TD, at least not at home anyway.

Thought Dunne had a good cameo when he came on, tackled well and played the simple ball. Certainly don’t see McCourt getting any gamer time soon as he must be at least 6th choice.

I liked Luke Norris's winning goal v FGR last season..... proper sexy build up, gets ball into the box, and Luke falls over in a scramash, and some part of his anatomy puts the ball a few inches over the line... slowly.

I'd very much settle for the equivalent next Saturday.

That was great entertainment yesterday.
Always good fun to win from 2 goals down, not so much to be on the receiving end.

Much better from Taylor.
He's like a vintage motor that has been left in the garage over the summer and takes a while to get going again, but still a decent runner.
He did very well against the pacy winger that they brought on.

McGlashan persevered against a difficult opponent.
There looks to be a good understanding between him and Knoyle.
I liked their no 6, although the pantomime villain, big, strong and quick and not bad going forward.

A game like that should do Romanski a lot of good in his development if he can learn from the mistake(s).

I like Smith as well. He did spray it about to no one in particular a fair bit but it was always positive.
Maybe needs to settle down a bit and just play it quick and simple.

Tranmere should be ok this season. Look like a top half team.
Their cocky keeper might think twice in future before getting involved with the home end.

Too early to predict where this team are going to end up.
We could still be waiting for the first point after three games under slightly different circumstances.
Good teams can do the play badly and still win thing, but they also seem to benefit from a more than average share of good fortune....

Not perfect but get 2 decent centre backs and I think this side will do well.
A

Agree with all of that.  Felt a bit sorry for Romanski as he was out of his depth.  Lancashire was poor too.  The first 20 mins was one of the worst centre back pairing performances I've seen at Swindon.

Still think Rico for Dave that early was a stupid risk.

Thankfully paid off though.

I agree. At the time I thought it odd but to be honest Dave had barely touched the ball in the first 20 minutes, he is still finding his feet.

I think PB is still unsure of how best to utilise our midfield. Personally I think Smith would be best sat in front of the defensive line winning the ball back and giving to Doughty and Alzate to dictate play. Not really sure if you can utilise Dave as presumably that’s what he was signed to do?

Anderson continues to frustrate, he works very hard but consistently makes the wrong decisions, running down blind alleys etc.

Alzate is going to get barrel loads of assists this season. Doesn’t do anything massively fancy on the ball but seems to have a great eye for a pass. His 2 assists were very clever, patient and picked out Rico and Romanski expertly.

With Doughty and Alzate both being able to pick a through ball, I reckon Woolery could be a gem.

2 keeper punts upfield, 2 goals for them. Pathetic. I’m on edge every time the opposition have the ball. It’s like there’s a collective acceptance that a cock up is just around the corner all the time.

Brown's job was pretty much on the line, epecially with back to back away games, and we look ill suited for on the road.  The crowd looked to be perhaps 5K at best maybe fewer, could be why the figure wasn't released.

When you can't defend the keeper's punt in Div 4, you'll not win too many games.

It’s tempting to say it’s what we did under Hoddle on our way up to the PL. So i’ll rephrase that and do a Plowman and suggest that is what it seemed like at the time. Otherwise he’ll have a sore arm from his obsessive keyboard research and a wankfest over the stats to prove otherwise.

Number 6 was playing left back was he not? Other than being a lump I can't say I was that impressed, he seemed to be blowing after about 30 minutes and just spent the rest of the game trying to time waste. I would say we actually need an out and out centre back.

I've never known an attendance not to be released and I demand to know. I don't want to use it against anyone, and I can cope if it's poor, but if clubs stop releasing attendances, what will they start hiding next for heaven's sake? Will swindon-town-fc.co.uk be forced to leave blanks in their records? Will average attendance statistics stop being available? It's the start of the end, I tell you.

I always look at attendances not only of us, but of teams in the rest of the FL.  You can spot patterns and trends.... who's doing well, who's gone pop etc. Further the state of the game itself, below the Prem.

With us it's usually the case that you get a bit of enthusiasm at the first game if at home.... then attendances drop off when it turns to shit.  PaulD thinks it's because of holidays.... I'm not so sure and no real easy way of knowing.

This season we have an exciting start then 3 defeats in all comps, and it looked like the crowd was well down on the opener.

I a not sure people will be able to cope if they list as "around" a number, would seem a bit like guesswork instead of a formal headcount.

They are meaningless these days with everyone counting season ticket sales regardless of showing up or not.

Pretty much this. I made the mistake of going on the Facebook group, they just jump on anything to bash Power, you can't reason with them and if you ask them to justify themselves you just get abuse. Unfortunately sums up a section of our fanbase even at games unfortunately.

Under FA rules, home clubs must publish the ‘official attendance’, which includes everyone who bought a ticket whether they went to the game or not.

But, for safety purposes, Police keeps its own record of the actual number of people who pass through the turnstiles.

It is strange, though. Last season we had, I think, 7800 first home game against Exeter, then dropped dramatically for the 2nd. Exactly the same this season. About a 1500 drop in a matter of 2 weeks.

Speaking of attendances, I looked up a Home game yesterday vs Huddersfield in March 2008 (to see if my memory was correct about us winning with 9 men - it was) and saw we had less than 5k at that game. By my reckoning probably the last Home league game to be sub 5k. Shows the step change brought in by fittons (failed) season ticket offer. Sadly that does look to be waning now on the face of it

I remember that night. Easton got 2 & we brought Moses Ashkodi off the bench who proceeded to strut around as if we were 5 up playing against 9. We were 2 men down & clinging onto a 3-2 lead if my memory serves me correct at the time.

In the Merlin on Saturday they were still whining away about the floodlight failure.  In their place I would have been much more angry about the playoff game at the end of the season where the bizarre disallowance of John Alderton's perfectly good goal was arguably the turning point of the whole two legs.

It's a long time ago but my recollection of their programme for that 92/93 second leg was that they were primarily moaning that they had been the potential beneficiary (along with Sunderland of course) of our two division demotion in 89/90.  I think they lost the Div 3 playoff and hence would be the next team to go up when we went down to Div 3.  They were therefore 'cheated' of their 'rightful place' in Div 2 when the punishment was reduced to a single division drop.  A classic example of totally unjustified whinging scouser victim mentality.
