Title: Swindon Town v Macclesfield Town official match day thread
Post by: Wobbly Bob on Friday, August 3, 2018, 23:48:17
Can't make it unfortunately, but enthused nonetheless.

Hope the majority go home happy.

Enjoy.

It should be hot for the first home game and that looks very likely.... the hottest I recall was v Wendies in the Mooney season. OK we lost that game, but you could see Kingy had put together a very tidy side. It would be good to be similarly enthused later.

PB seems enthused....

Am going 3.1 town. More hope than certainty.
Any scoreline that gets 3 pts will do  :pint:

Looking forward to enjoying watching a game, past couple of seasons have dulled that feeling.

2-0 win today. Doughty (pen) and Matt Taylor

Going to a family BBQ in Kent where I expect phone signal to be ropey as hell. Have to sneak inside to get some trusty WiFi to check our progress.

It’s always sunny on the first day of the football season.

I remember son getting sunburnt at Barnsley when King was manager. Weather was great we weren’t.

Hoping for a win today, but as Reg says it’s more about seeing that we have a team with some promise.

I picked Barnsley for promotion after that game, all the hallmarks of a good side.  They won the playoffs.

I've got 2 separate bets on, both Doughty to score first, as with BO I think we'll get a pen.

I think we are still a CB and Striker away from a decent side, I would like to think we have enough to beat these but they have momentum behind them as Lincoln did last season, they have the neucleus of the same side with a lot of new signings added too, genuinely could go either way.

First day nerves 2-1 defeat in front of 6,321 with 138 from Macc with McGlashan scoring.

Looking forward to it, optimistically think it will be a comfortable 2-0 (Dave & Anderson) win

Just went to put the FL highlight programme thing on series link but it doesn’t seem to be on C5 this year? Any idea what’s going on?

I don't think some realise that you pay for audio, you don't get visual for free. They're two standalone payments (that was the deal last season). There were some workarounds if you had paid for the live stream but even then they shafted us on audio.

Anyway, enough of that. At 15.03 all that matters is Town start well and at c16.50 Town have 3pts.

C.O.Y.R!!!

Adebyao a bit slow off the blocks in his first game TBH not winning as much as a man of his size should.

Great move by Swindon ends with Taylor hitting a 30 yarder straight at their defender, much better by the Town.

Anderson cuts out a pass 40 yards out passes to Adebeyo but he couldnt get near enough to control it, poor touch from the Fulham striker, he would have been clear through from 18 yards out.

Great tracking back and tackle by McGlashan, many years since a Town winger has done that!

Adebayo one on one with the keeper but a poor finish and he was offside anyway but he should be putting those in the net.

Adebayo is all elbows when he jumps, he will have a lot of fouls against him this season.

Great skill and turn by Alzate sets up a good attacking Town move that ends with a foul on Anderson.

Almost all out attacks have come down our right with Knoyle, McGlashan and Alzate all linking up well, we need to attack down the left a bit more where they look weak at the back. We have little left wing attacks so far.

Macclesfield are a very very physical team, lots of kicking of us and very little skill, they struggle to cope when we pass the ball and run at them and they cannot cope with Adebayo at the back who is now winning everything against a really poor couple of centre backs.

You have to think we go on to win this, they should tire as well.

Better than anything I watched last season.  Some tidy looking players on the ball and Adebayo is much better than I was expecting given reviews before this game.  A good central target to play off.  How the keeper got away with cleaning out Anderson is beyond me, and the first one somehow ended up with our player being booked!

Have played well
Should be winning, but aren’t and that’s the concern.

As others have said Adebayo has grown into the game and is making life difficult for their defence.
Alzate looks a good signing, plenty of skills & no lack of effort.

All in all we look to have the makings of a decent team, just need to get a goal from somewhere

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Macclesfield Town official match day thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, August 4, 2018, 15:06:29
I think Adebyao started very slowly but really grew into the game, he looks a very good target man after the slow start, probably nerves.

Smith can pass the ball and run with a lot of pace, needs to get forward a little more but has had a very good game.

McGlashan has made some super runs, tracks back and can tackle too, is linking up very well with Knoyle and Alzate.

Alzate also started slowly but grew into the game, has a great touch and can make a good pass, puts in a lot of good runs and crosses too.

Doughty looks solid in the middle and made 2 great efforts in the 6 yard box and probably should have scored at least one of them, playing well.

Conroy looks like a new signing, has pace and control and was only beaten in the air once or twice all game, Lancashire still doesn't entirely convince me but we have looked in the main untroubled at the back.

Taylor put in a couple of good balls and crosses as well as a couple of free kicks, not his best game but hes playing ok.

Vigs has done everything asked of him, caught the ball, made 2 good stops and looks fairly untroubled, his distribution looks superb today too.

Anderson is also making some great runs into good positions and looks more eager than every before, just needs to add that final touch/shot to his armoury and he will be a good player, they can't cope with his pace at all.

Macclesfield have done what I expected, got bodies in the way and made it hard for us and hit us a couple of times on the break with long balls, they won most things in midfield early on but since about the 15th minute we have over run them in the middle, at the back they look slow and their keeper is lucky to still be on the pitch after taking out Anderson, keep the pressure up Swindon.

They score, we score. 1-1. Just slow starting in the 2nd half.  Paid for it, got a bullet and returned the favour. Even if we win PB will not be happy with the slackness for the goal conceded straight after the 2nd half started.

We 'should' win this.

Losing but look fairly organised with an incomplete squad. My only nag is that I expected a new captain for the season. Lancashire doesn't have as much leadership quality (don't get me wrong he's likeable) but would've expected a change in the armband...Doughty maybe or I'd have given it to Taylor.

Made it harder than it needed to be with some stupid mistakes. Vigs needs to have a word with himself. Need a goalscorer. Definitely more positives than negatives. Even when we were 2-1 down with 10 minutes to go I was feeling more positive than negative despite thinking we were going to lose.

Ummmm, that was a bit crazy.

That was like a frustrating Football Manager game, where you pummel a team and then your defenders and goalkeeper are slipped sleeping pills..

If we had managed to lose that, Taylor and Vigs should have paid everyone else their wages, as it is, they can all go home happy :-)

I think the season will pan out ok.  We look to have some good talents on the ball, I liked Alzate - a better version of Anderson.  Once they have had a few games and maybe a defender added, we should be in the top 7 no problems.  You have to think we can't give two softer goals away all season, please................

Definately, thats concentration from Vigs, I think after seeing that we need a goalscorer, another CB (possibly) and a left back.

Talk on the Macclesfield forum of the ref being a homer, they obviously didn't see the game today! poor poor ref and 2 obvious penalties, and could have been another 2 before then!

Quote
2 penalties in 2 mins after 96 mins , haven't seen coverage or heard it but capitulation or a strong smell of homer!

I followed the last 5 mins via teletext to change our luck. Punched the air when it came up “Doughty pen 90+6” but it was still listed as L rather than FT. Couldn’t believe it when the score corrected back to 1-2 and the 2nd Doughty goal was deleted. Just about to kick the tv and then it came up with Doughty pen 90+6 and Doughty pen 90+8 FT

Bizarre!

That was incredible. Doughty just loves being here.

Their first goal, while we were slack it was taken well.
Their second, very poor from Vigs had that been Moore or dare I say RCC the knives would've been out big time. Vigs largely had a great game. Needs to learn to play for 100mins not 90mins. Nice to see his distribution and claiming has got better. He'll be learning lots from both McCormick and Mildenhall.

Smith looks handy. As does Alzate. Adebayo will grow more with game time. Don't forget we'll have Richards to come back. If goals come from midfield (plus Taaylor will score a few) I don't think we need to bring in an out and out goalscorer.

We should be more than capable to make top 7. Iron out and chip off some rust. Bring Sid in and one other.

Things should be good for the season ahead. I would've written the same had we lost 2-1.

Well deserved that. Very enjoyable 90 mins. In all the euphoria of that 2nd penalty it shouldn’t be forgotten the brilliant football leading up to it.

Can’t really find much to moan at apart from the obvious - and that isn’t going to happen every week. Very encouraging.

Like McGlashan and Smith, lovely skill from Alzate on occasions. Thought Doughty was pretty quiet.

Don’t know what to make of Crazy Legs Crane up top.

Looking forward to going to Lincoln.

I agree, he started slowly and couldn't jump or win anything for the first 15 mins, then he hardly put a foot wrong and won almost everything thrown at him.

Good summary.

Macclesfield will doubtless whinge that they were unlucky, they weren't.  By the same token we couldn't have complained if we'd lost, if you don't take your chances... Even before half time people were drawing comparisons to England v Croatia.

Obviously easier to say when it's a sunny afternoon, first game of season and you win, but I really enjoyed that game.  There was some neat football.  I think we have the makings of a viable promotion challenge if they can also play on a cold winter evening at some shitty northern ground.

Part 1 the report:

Well what can I say that hasn't been said. I don't know because I've not read the thread back yet.

First half was one of the most enjoyable for a little while. While Macclesfield weren't without threat, we kind of kept them at arms length most of the time. We, on the other hand passed the ball around nicely, created numerous chances.  Only a combination of the Macclesfield keepers outstanding saves, the post/crossbar and some not quite good enough finishing kept the score at 0-0. I think we were worth a couple of goals. I was particularly impressed by Smith's energy - he broke up play a lot. Altate (not out) has a touch of class at times too.

Second half would see us ease to the victory we deserved at a canter. Its going to be our year.

But, of course, its a frustrating old game. And its never that simple. Not long after half time the inevitable happened. We gave away a free kick, we did the normal to delay its taking, throw the ball in the air to the wrong place (etc), then it landed in Macclesfield hands. Whether we were expecting a slow and methodical free kick I don't know, but a simple sidefooted pass down their right and suddenly the #22 (wanker) was in free on goal with a 1 on 1 that was cooly finished. He of course gave it the big one down nearly the entire DRS stand. Dwarf twat.

Anyway, typical Swindon. Except it wasn't. Because pretty soon after we are down their right, a cross comes in onto Doughty's head and a simple header makes it 1-1. Game back on.

Except Macclesfield were well in the game now, and would probably be seen as the better team in the second half. That said it took an unbelievable crap mistake from Vigs to put them 2-1 up. He took a touch on a simple to clear ball, messed up his pass and the ball ended up at the feet of the #22 again, a calm lobbed fininsh did the job nicely.

And we kind of fell apart after that if I'm honest, it knocked the stuffing out of us. The midfield and defence suddenly looked very dissjointed and raggedy. Macclesfield were edging us out.

But give up we did not. We certainly produced a fuckton of chances in the match as a whole, and when McCourt thundered a shot off the bar after missing a golden 1 on 1 within a minute of coming on, eth game was over.

Except it wasn't. 5 minutes injury time, and somehow we get a penalty. It was on the other side of the pitch to me, and it looked a foul. But the lino seemed to flag for offside - I assume it wasn't actually for offside as in the context of the throw in and what happened next I can't see how anyone could be. After a lengthy conversation the pen was given. Doughty stepped up, the keeper saved it ....no he didn't... did it hit the post...did it get backspin.. who knows, but it trickled in. 2-2. Phew.

But re-energised we still pressed for the winner, even though there was really only a minute left. The ball  was robbed from Macclesfield and played to Anderson down our left. The defender came across and Anderson went down. Another penalty. Should it have it been given, I'm not 100%. But I'm not complaining. This one was more comfortably dispatched by the hatrick boy to send the crowd going mental. I don't think I've celebrated that much in a normal game since that *goal* at Nothampton.

Vigs was booked for legging it to the edge of his area, knee sliding, arms aloft, right at the Macclesfield fans. Was the number 22 booked for the same thing? Of course not. Why not, I've no idea on the rules but the ref was a cocknocker for 90 minutes, and brilliant for the last  or so:)

Sponsors MOM : Doughty (before the 2 pens)
Batch's star man/men: Knoyle and Adebeyo (who won't score shit loads but was an awkward so and so today)

Part 2, conclusions.

What can we tell from a first game of the season?
No a lot...

How strong or weak are Macclesfield?
To be seen.

Are we strong enough in attack?
We created a shit load of chances, didn't exactly Norris them but weren't clinical

How weak are we in defense?
Hard to tell. Sleepy free kick and keeper fuck up aside I thought we did pretty well for a lot off the game. My fear of not dealing with high balls was without substance today.

So what the fuck is your view?
OK I've no idea how its going to go. But I was very encouraged by the first half. The quality on display looked in excess of last year. However, after their second goal we looked far below that. Which is the real Town when things settle down - time will tell.

Well, so much has been written already and if Macclesfield claim to be unlucky they should consider we had two very worthy penalty claims in the first half, one one their keeper came out and flattened our player with no attempt to go for the ball - should have been a pen and a red card!  We hit the woodwork three times with the keeper beaten each time!  I was concerned with the substitutions in the second half, don't know if it was fatigue but I felt our two best players were subbed.  That made it harder for us as Macc took hold of the game - their no. 23 put in a really good performance and looked good for them.  In my opinion they were both pens rightly given!  Even with the ref and linesman having a three minute love-in and Doughty having already put the ball on the spot before the ref actually signalled a pen there was so much tension in the air that he did well to convert it.  Over the 90 (104) mins we fully deserved to win on skill and work rate although Macc had their moments, mainly due to us not defending properly.  Sort that out Mr Brown and we could have a very good season.

My first game for ages. Well it was more entertaining than the previous games I watched over the last 3 years, that's for sure. We looked good going forward and a bit shit at the back. Keeper fuck-up aside, I wasn't overly impressed with Lancashire again - we really need another centre back. Thought Alzate was a bag of tricks and we lost the impetus when he was taken off. Also impressed with McGlashan and Adebayo who both look very lively, and obviously great to see Doughty in a Town shirt again. I'm feeling confident that once this side gells, and with the addition of 1-2 players we should be pushing for promotion.

Good knockabout fun.  The new boys, including MD all at least did something.  McCourt had an interesting 5 minute cameo, nearly gifted them a 3rd with his first contribution, then got booked for getting involved with handbags, missed a sitter and hit the bar with a decent strike.

The old boys, perhaps less so... as anticipated the defence wasn't convincing, and Vigs just doesn't have the mental toughness, despite being an OK shotstopper.... still players can improve, but some have got a long way to go.

Now I've calmed down a bit, some things I was proper chuffed about today:

1) We look like a side that actually has some genuine skill. At times today we played some cracking football, of the kind I didn't expect to see in League 2
2) It says a huge amount about the mentality of the team that having got back to 2-2 with a minute or so left, they didn't just hold on, they went for the winner. That bodes really well
3) I think there's a lot more to come from Adebayo and he could be a very exciting player for us this season
4) The sweet sweet justice of the Poison Dwarf Arthur conceding the winning penalty. After we went 2-1 down, I'd joked that we'd equalise and then him score an og for our winner. Not quite, but that was close enough

And a couple of moans/concerns
1) Lancashire - don't like scapegoating a player, it happens far too often here, but he looks the weak link in defence. Wouldn't have been surprised to see him leave, if we'd managed to get a decent CB in, but instead he's captain?
2) Why was Alzate subbed off when he was? Looked our best player until then and we seemed to lose impetus when he went off
tbf, both the above are Brown's decision and his prerogative to make them. Given he sees these players every day in training and I don't, and that the positives hugely outweigh the concerns, I'd be minded to suspect he knows what he's doing and I'm being a bit dim

Assumed Alzate, might have had a niggle or been struggling a bit with the heat, only a kid.  Clearly likes a ball at his feet. Lancashire should be good enough for Div 4, his injury sounded dodgy, what with being advised to retire, so I'd imagine might take him a while to get fully confident again.

Away fan view:

https://fansonline.net/macclesfieldtown/mb/view.php?id=182643

Quote
Bad result, though a mostly enjoyable game. I've not seen any of pre season, so this was my first time seeing the new lads. We always looked the underdogs but gave a decent account of ourselves for about 101 minutes of the 104 played by my count. I don't recall ever seeing a game with so much injury time - at least 14 mins in total.

Swindon scored three, hit the bar four times, and Taylor made a couple of great saves in the first half. It could've been a cricket score. I'm not being harsh, but both sides looked at their best when attacking rather than defending.

Swindon pretty much always looked dangerous, had most of the ball, and were quicker and stronger in most positions.

Only Taylor kept the score 0-0 at half time, making a couple of great last ditch saves.

Quick free kick from Danny W to Koby Arthur saw us take the lead straight after HT. But then we went to sleep, allowed Swindon to attack straight away down he right, and conceded immediately after scoring.

Our 2nd was an error by Swindon's goalkeeper. Caught messing about by Danny W and Arthur, who chipped in over the keeper's head. Swindon GK really deserves a special mention. Absolute rubbish. Couldn't kick, and couldn't save even tame shots without putting it out for a corner. Not comfortable in possession. At fault for both our goals. Didn't seem like a professional really. If he's their number 1 and regularly plays like that, then any team has a chance against Swindon.

Credit to Whit and Arthur though. We looked better 2nd half when Whitaker was further forward and closer to Smith and Arthur.

At 2-1 up Swindon were always going to throw the kitchen sink at us. The first penalty seemed controversial at the time but I've just watched it back on Sky and it seems pretty nailed.

Second penalty looked to me like Arthur made a rash challenge. Lack of composure.

On the whole, a few encouraging signs though also a few negatives.

We gave a big scare, away from home, to a side that will be aiming to go up this year.

We took our best chances, and created a few more that on another day could've gone in.

Koby Arthur - bit of an enigma. Not really in the game 1st half. Took his first goal well and then looked well up for it. His 2nd was lovely finish. But after that he didn't make great use of the ball. Is he really a winger? looks like a he struggles to know what to do with the ball when in a good position out wide.

Grimes and Kelleher - looked a bit shaky, especially in possession. Could be just down to being a new pairing. Though they did have a lot to do today. Generally in defence we looked a bit slow.

Smith - won his headers mostly, some good touches, didn't get much chance to threaten goal.

Subs - A lot of people will probably say we lost this because Yates brought Lowe on for Rose and played him in midfield. I don't agree with that. I do think centre mid looked a weak point at times though.

We gave the ball away too easily in midfield at times. Also lacked a bit of composure in defence.

Good performances from Danny W, Taylor, Fitz, Marsh. Considering the summer we've had, if this teams gels a bit more, we can stay up.

Overall we need to write this one off - 98th minute penalties aren't going to happen every week - and take the positives. I'd like to see Lloyd start assuming he's fit.

Swindon seem to have a bit of that big time charlie syndrome you see in clubs that used to be much higher up the leagues. We don't belong here, etc. They look about top half L2 level to me.

We know this season will be hard and staying up will be a good result. On today's showing we can do that. I didn't expect a win today. The way we lost shows how tough things may be. Not every team will have the resources Swindon have, and all of them have to come to the Moss.

BIB - are we? I guess we are a bit, I don't feel we belong in Div 4, but we most certainly deserve to be there, and we most certainly will need to deserve to get out.

The added time was because of water breaks in addition to the usual extra. 3mins is standard, so add on 2for water and there’s your 5minutes. The first penalty took an age to sort out - another 2-3 mins. A couple of theirs went down like a sack of shit for no good reason, too.

Next week will give a decent indication to our worth - Lincoln were not particularly impressive today and Cobblers thought they deserved 3 or 4 goals.

And for whatever faults Vigs may have, I’d still take him over RCC any day.

Enjoyed that, in the end.
Thought McGlashan and Alzate played extremely well. Adebayo had a bit of a shaky first half but grew into the game.
Needs another striker though. Surprised Alzate went off as he still looked effective whereas Anderson didn't.
Bar 2 defensive errors we didn't look too bad at the back tho could do with tightening up.

Off and running

So first game in, are we fucked?

Honest opinions please.

Win is a win surely?

Winning is always good, and should be celebrated.

It vaguely reminded me of a game v Cobblers in 85.... when we won 3-2 and Peter Coyne scored a hat-trick, including 2 penalties.

Funny old line up, and we played the get out of jail card due to dear old Russell Lewis.

http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=19860105

Interestingly Brian Mundee played in that game... from an old skool Swindon football family.... Denny had a career but Barry took to poker

How we stand up at Sincil Bank, will be a better indicator... first sightings are that we won't be able to cope with the aerial onslaught.

Yes, we looked proper worried by the high ball...............................

Fortunately, the post above yours makes it seem reasonable.

Has there been a season since 1985 that you enjoyed?

Even 1986/87 included a 2-6 home embarrassment, clearly an indicator of the season ahead that year.

Indeed, I've always found that quite bizarre.

Yet when a forward who scored 30+ goals for us in a near relegation season, before leaving quite amicably, returns with another club, he gets a bit of stick. And when there's talk of re-signing him, people turn their noses up.

Strange bunch.

Good start, deserved the win, all the new guys looked the part particularly Alzate, Smith and Adebayo.
Great composure from Doughty, and can't be bad getting a hat trick when not playing completely the perfect game.
Signs looked good. Most pleasing is that it looks like much more there to offer than last season.

I can see him playing at Lincoln because of his size, although I don’t think Smith would deserve to miss out. I hope Brown isn’t thinking of Alzate as the one...

When you think we have Dave to come in, plus Richards and Woolery and then some hairy arsed defender (Brown’s description) and another striker, I’d say things look very rosy.

5 minutes of added time and then TWO penalties in Fergie time.  Amazing.

Although 0-0 was disappointing at half time, after recent years of sterile keepball and latterly hoofball, it was a joy to watch a midfield of quick turns and intent, mixing up short and long, runs off the ball and so on.  The nagging doubt was finishing.  Interestingly, because he knows something about it, Steve White seemed pretty seriously impressed with Adebayo's contribution.  All of the new boys impressed me.

Very dozy defending for their first but it seemed to me that confidence dropped just when it shouldn't have after Vigs' error.  Some of his distribution prior had actually been pretty good.  The side as a whole lost a measure of its previous fluidity. The 4th goal could've gone either way.

The commitment never dropped however and the turnaround should be a real positive for belief in not just the squad but also the CG.  In that sense, this result was pleasing, even for fluffy August, and even a neutral could have enjoyed the football.  Until the season's outcome is settled, the next game will always be the bigger test but a very encouraging start.

If you remember that match it was a bit of an indicator, insofar as we were 4-0 down at HT, then came out the second half and had a right good go... the TE giving full support, one lad even coming out and taking a corner.  Lou appreciated the backing and responded by making it the last game of 3 players at Town under him.... that included Martin Ling, who although a player he signed obviously didn't think fitted the way of playing.

Oh, and I didn't really notice Lancashire being that dodgy. But I'm not very observant.
I have to admit that I, like PaulD, don't like scapegoating but for me Lancashire just isn't up to the job, I think we need to try Nelson alongside Conroy on Tuesday, but sorry its time Lancashire moved on IMO.

I too wondered why Alzate went off he didn't seem to be struggling at all, still its in the past and it didn't cost us the game, which at one point when McCourt missed the great chance I thought it may.

As an aside, not sure if its been posted but from the Macclesfield forum, a little sour grapes maybe?

Quote
They aint exactly the most welcoming of clubs are they? A total XXXX of a PA announcer who only announces home goals, and decided to announce three times in several minutes at the end of the game that today's score was 3-2 sort of summed it up for me. Oh and I forgot their clown of a keeper who decided to 'give it large' to us at the end of the game after a shocking personal performance!!

The word 'classless' comes to mind.

Kind regards

And for whatever faults Vigs may have, I’d still take him over RCC any day.
Fuck yes!

Still buzzing from yesterday,  can only agree with most of the posts on here, yesterday was exceptional, can only see the squad improving.
Nice to start the season without the usual negativity,  hopefully stay aways will start to come back.
Really impressed with the players attitudes,  2-1 down but the heads did not drop as they would have done last season,  never noticed one single player give up, it's been a long time since we've seen a squad battle like this,   everyone gave 100%, that's all we can ask,  Division One calls if we put in this much effort into every game.   Well done lads, it's been a long time since we've seen a team that's proud to wear the shirt.  COYR COYR COYR

Just having a read of the other forums in this division and of all the teams the only ones who's fans went away happy after their matches seem to be Mansfield, Exeter, FGR and Crewe.

Almost every other team that either won, drew or lost said the game and teams were pretty poor between sides with little between them.

The mansfield fans seem to think they will have the league wrapped up soon! they also say that their crowd was amazing at 4,423 (which was 4,103 home fans).

I was surprised that the result was Flipflops first home league win!

I see the away attendance from Macc was way over what they expected at 271.

From the Macclesfield web site.

Quote
Despite two injury time penalties giving Swindon Town maximum points in our EFL opener yesterday, the afternoon was one which will remain in our hearts forevermore and much of that was down to you - our incredible fans who yet again proved to be our twelfth man.

Mark Yates and the players have been quick to recognise the unbelievable support which was on show at The County Ground yesterday, describing it as “tremendous”.

Even before the two sides entered the pitch, the cacophony of noise which was generated by the 271 visiting supporters was deafening.

Each and everyone of you played your part in showing the nation what Macclesfield Town is all about, as you vociferously got behind the side in a manner which exemplified pride and defiance.

Your support yesterday was phenomenal and we would like to thank everybody who stood with us during our first battle of the season.

We may well have been outnumbered in terms of quantity, but there is no doubt that the emotion, passion and unity which you proudly displayed is something which should be cherished and is certainly not something which we take for granted.

As we have stated previously, when we hear you raucously willing the team on we know that you are not just regurgitating words of your favourite chant. We know that every word is a piece of your heart and that is what makes the support we receive so evocative.

From their forum, yet another accusation of us conning refs as many sides did last season AFTER we beat them.

Quote
Also thought that we were clearly inferior in conning a poor ref. Sunbed's obviously had them working at it. Final straw for me was the ref putting all our players back In the area while he discussed matters with the lino when 3 of their players were listening in and giving their opinion less than 2 yards away. Seems like they were pens thought difficult to see at the other end.

I'm undecided on the incidents with their goalie. It could have just been a case of them coming together accidentally. (I'm not sure where the rules stand on that). Just how/why McGlashan? got a yellow, though, is beyond me.

Interesting watching the highlights of the rest of the competition.... Grimsby, managed to out comic defend us v FGR.  Yeovil started as they left off last season down to 9 men, think they had 10 reds last season. Morecambe must be early candidates for the drop depite Jim Bentley, being the longest serving manager in the FL. Mansfield look to have recruited well, and it's very sad to see a likeable fella like Tisdale at Franchise.

It’s always sunny on the first day of the football season.

I remember son getting sunburnt at Barnsley when King was manager. Weather was great we weren’t.

Hoping for a win today, but as Reg says it’s more about seeing that we have a team with some promise.

Went to that. We started Michael Pook left wing

17 minutes in I told my mate & his dad that ‘we were shit and going down’ of course I was being overly negative blah blah blah

We were shit and we did go down

Fair enough, just highlights weren't listed in the "benefits" for the free subs. Mind you, live games seem to have a red cross (presumably indicating unavailable) for all 3 options, which seems odd

Thoroughly enjoyable game on Saturday.  All of the new players were good.  I was particularly impressed with Smith.  Surprising that he was only playing in NI before us.  We have Neil McDonald to thank for identifying him.  Smith's technically good, athletic and can tackle - a massive improvement on Dunne and Linganzi.  Away from home I think I'd play Smith, Toums and Doughty in midfield with Alzate in the front three instead of McGlashan or Anderson.

You may be getting a little carried away with Smith, yes he harried well, but repeatedly gave the ball away, I'm sure Dunne could do similar....

the Alzate idea is interesting... very happy with the ball at feet, and some turns that Mickey Hazard would have been proud of, but perhaps not the influence that a gaffer wants.... however young and here to learn.  It's that running of the game that you want from a playmaker.

They're rare in English football, which is where the WC campaign floundered.... McGlashan, although a bit limited does look like he does the basics, whereas Keshi had nodded off for their opener. I'm not sure where I got the idea from that KA, is more of a second striker than a wide man.

You may be getting a little carried away with Smith, yes he harried well, but repeatedly gave the ball away, I'm sure Dunne could do similar....
I didn't notice Smith give the ball away more than once or twice, I thought he looked very good made some great runs with the ball with pace and can tackle and pass. Be interesting to see his stats on completed passes as I too thought he looked very handy, could be watching on iFollow that I didn't get as good a view as you did in the stand though.

Total Sport Swindon agreed with me too.

Quote
Martin Smith is the midfielder Swindon needed

Making his debut yesterday after signing on a free transfer from Coleraine, Martin Smith displayed all the elements that Phil Brown wants from his central midfielder. Playing in the centre of a three man midfield, Smith was impressive in both his defensive and attacking duties.

Regularly protected the defence to stop any dangerous attacks whilst also putting on a passing master class as he sprayed the ball across the pitch with confidence and accuracy. A great performance from the new signing.

There's usually a reason why you end up at Coleraine or a similar level... it could be that for Smith it's his passing completion, don't get me a wrong a promising debut, he generally looked to be positive, but let's not get carried away.

Heaven forbid we will get optimistic about a new signing ;)

If you can't get carried away after a 96th minute equaliser and 98th minute winner, when can you??

Exactly :D

FWIW I think Smith, Doughty and Toums should play central midfield vs Lincoln and play one of either Anderson or Alzate as I think the game could be a bit more physical on Saturday, something that I don't think is a strong point of Alzates game.

That said maybe his skill will unlock them as it did a few times vs Macc. I do think our players need some protection from the ref though as they will kick us all over the pitch as they did last season.

Well in the case of judging Smith he was off the pitch when that all happened... and his replacement McCourt was more directly involved in the pen events. But don't let that stop you getting carried away with his contribution ...

Think it depends on whether Dave can do the minutes.

What if every single person is happy with Smiths performance apart from you. I reckon you could be wrong, as for judging him on playing in Ireland. Pretty sure Roy Keane did the same

A word of advice.... read the posts.

Nowhere did I say I was unhappy with Smith's performance, in fact I said a promising debut as he generally looked to be positive.... however the question was asked as to why he ended up at Coleraine... now for me the flaw in his game was giving the ball away too often, which may perhaps be the reason.

Oh and I couldn't give a shit what others think if their argument is based on premises like my jusdgement is flawed because Keane played in Ireland and so did Smith.

Or repeatedly gave the ball away, which one? I read your post you see.

He gave the ball away once or twice, fuck knows how that counts as repeatly or too often for a league 2 player

Repeatedly and too often anmount to the same thing.... out of interest why do you think Smith ended up at Coleraine?

Who cares, what matter is what he does when he is here.

Your point raised some thoughts about the game.........

Smith - I thought he was "tidy", not impressive, but certainly not a poor performance either.  I did not notice any of our players, bar Anderson, squander possession.  We didn't complete all our passes, obviously, but the majority of time that we did give way the ball was while trying something positive, in the right areas (Vigs being the exception!).

MCCourt was clearly a different sort of player - he pops up much further up the pitch, and was probably asked to do so.

It reminded me also of Doughty's reaction to Alzate going off.  Twine ran over to him and passed a message, Doughty looked less than pleased, so assume he had been asked to drop back a bit, allowing Twine to press on.

Anderson was the the one most guilty of losing possession, and usually it was not passing but holding on to the ball too long or trying to beat a player.  He really could do with more experience and some teaching here - I thought Alzate looked the better of the two and McGlashan first half as well.  That being said, they both get an assist for doing what they do - Alzate for being a bit more of a creator, and Anderson for beating his man.

It was something to do with a move lined up that fell through, can't remember where, just before the transfer deadline leaving him without a club.  The Irish league operate different deadlines - see Vigs - so rather than not play at all he opted to play at Coleraine.

I thought Smith was excellent in the first half, full of energy winning the ball back several times.

Second half all of the midfield at times were all over the shop. They regrouped though.

Can't really underestimate the weather taking its toll on legs. Try going for a jog at the hottest part of the day!

Certainly Smith was trying something positive when giving the ball away.... sort of stuff that coaches can work on
