Title: Seasons opener
Post by: kirky69 on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, 19:40:37
Ok with fixtures being released tomorrow, who do you we want first up? Mansfield for me - home preferably.

Anyone, either at home or away.  Honestly doesn't really bother me.

We have 46 fixtures. Absolutely none of them excite me. I'll still go all home games and a couple away but really don't give much of a shit which way they fall.

Do we know the date of the first game? I'm away first 3 weeks of august so hopefully no southern games away first up.

Cheers. Yes I'll miss the first 3 or 4 (and probably the following 42/43 :)

The last time we had a second season in Div 4 was 83/84. Then, as now it was difficult to get too excited about the fixtures, despite having Reading and the newly formed Bristol club with us in the bottom tier. Still there was some excitement to be had, as I'm sure there will be this coming season.

Agree. The responses sum up the general apathy that surrounds our club at the moment. Everyone needs a lift and  this season is crucial in that respect otherwise a section of the fan base will be lost forever - much like a significant proportion of the TEF, who appear not to attend games anymore and those that do largely do so out of duty/habit rather than desire.

People don't give a shit what game we start with. What does it matter?

I must say that it's one of the least appetising Fixture Release Days I've experienced.

The fact that I've read people state that they will be checking for the Mansfield dates says a lot.

I predict that the list will look wholly winnable and yet we'll still manage to labour our way through the winter months.

I've never seen the excitement myself. We already know which league we're in and which teams we're playing, to find out in which particular order does nothing for me whatsoever.

I go out of habit and the hope that things will get better. I expect the football to be better this season but until we know the squad have no idea how the season will pan out.
I think you appreciate the good times more having been through the crap and the past two seasons have been the pits. Anyone who has switched off in this time, I don't blame them.

Nope. I never saw the excitement when I was back home either. About the only thing that I'd have any interest in whatsoever was whether we'd be home or away on boxing day. The rest I just found meaningless, still do.

The midweek aways are disappointing. Nothing too out of the way.

Grimsby away in December though.  :)

Macclesfield away will be rearranged due to our ongoing FA cup commitments.

Fair enough.

For me its to see what games I want to go to, around holidays etc. Myself and my dad go so will probably spend some of this weekend going through which lip-smacking matches we'll pick (as he doesn't have a ST anymore)

I wouldn't say I'm excited, more a smattering of interest.

We do have a 100% winning record v Macc in league games at the CG.  Lost the last one in the cup mind.

Teams coming up usually either have a bit of momentum or find it difficult to adjust. Macc seemed to have a fair few off field problems last season, so possibly might be in the difficult to adjust camp.

Cheltnum away is one I'd like to win.... can't decide whether being the last away game is good or bad.... :hmmm:

on the one hand, it delays the usual inevitable pain, on the other where would you least want to go if something important hinged on a squeaky bum time game?

This is why it’s crucial we start well and get points on the board. I wouldn’t want us needing 3 points at Cheltenham to guarantee our football league status.  ;)

If they have to form a guard of honour for our lot, then I'd happily take a 3-0 defeat there.  :)

Forest Green away on 25th August might appeal to some of the cyclists amongst you. A nice bike ride across North Wilts, Tetbury, Avening and into Nailsworth. Maybe back via Cirencester or the Water Parks

I used to have friends in Horsley.... it is a pleasant pedal, but some big old hills at the end. I used to go Ashton Keynes, Kemble, Tarlton, Cherington, Avening.  Getting out of Swindon was much easier then.

You forgot to mention the tories/Thatcher.

Of course, Cheltnum will always be a stain on the Tories reputation, when Thatcher ordered that Trade Unionism in GCHQ could not be tolerated as rank and file members were "the enemy within"  A number of workers were then dismissed for nothing more than exercising a right that their forebears had fought for.

Civilised behaviour was restored along with some workers, who were minded to return after up to 13 years of appeals etc, when Labour came to power in 97.

You could go Lydiard, Purton, down Pavenhill to Braydon Ponds, Charlton and Long Newnton and then cross the border into Mercia at the Fosseway.

I could, but given my current cycling fitness, lack the motivation.

I go because I like to follow my home town team. I'm grown-up/mature/stupid enough to accept defeats, awful performances, poor atmosphere, shit refs, knob fans, ignorant stewards etc etc etc. I don't care who we play or when we play them. It's never so painful to make me stop going. And it all helps to make the increasingly rare highs so much higher.

I assumed you meant the fuss when they selected John Taylor as candidate to show that they weren't racist and the local reaction was all rather racist.....
