Title: The world Cup Russia 2018 Thread
Post by: Sippo on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, 08:37:14
So all kicks off tomorrow. Looking forward to watching some decent matches.

I have put money on Belgium and Germany to win the tournament. Always bet on Belgium, they have a talented squad but always under perform.

The home nation always seem to do ok, but I believe Russia are the lowest ranked country in the tournament?

17 teams ranked below them. They are at 15

Can't see past the ususal suspects, Germany, Brazil, Spain, and outside chance with France and Belgium.

I expect England to get to the last 16 with a last 8 possible.

I need to sort out some bets, and maybe a fantasy team if anyone is using Telegraph Fantasy Football.

Russia seem to be very down on their own chances, but then again their opening game is against Saudi Arabia. The human rights derby that one.

Agree. Virtually every team has pretty much the same squad as 4 years ago. Ours is the most changed. Changed, but still rubbish. Might make last 16, no further, unless we get a really weak team.

England have only won 6 knockout games since 1966. SIX. Depressing or what.

Paraguay 1986
Belgium 1990
Cameroon 1990
Spain 1996
Denmark 2002
Ecuador 2006

Controversial, but I've no real interest in spending extra on UHD. Personally I find within 5 minutes I adjust to whatever source is available. Just me though.

I also don't have a UHD TV :)

Will watch it, but reasonably indifferent about the whole thing to be honest.

Suspect Russia will do better than expected, VAR presents a great opportunity for them.  :D

Spain's coach got the Real Madrid gig yesterday, and suggestion is the Spanish FA might sack him as a result... certainly puts the nonsense about Sterling's tattoo into perspective as unhelpful pre-tournament events go.

I like it, we might be shit at football, but can still turn out an entertainer.

As for the football, I expect a succession of tedious matches marred by dodgy decisions based on VAR....

We'll go well. I like this England team.

Uruguay my dark horse. Money on Cavani golden boot.

Brazil or France to win it. Spain imploding on the eve of the tournament is unbelievable.

Germany will win in a final with Brazil. 1-0.

England will go out in the quarters probably on penalties after dominating the match and not finding the net.

That would be something of a triumph for Gareth.  Reality is that little has changed for England.  Maybe expectations are a bit more realistic.  But can't help thinking that most assume we'll pitch up and beat Tunisia.... we're ranked 12th by FIFA, Tunisia 21st, not that much in it, Iceland 22nd.  So a draw with Tunisia, beat Panama, and lose to Belgium, opens up not qualifying, as Tunisia can beat Panama and draw with Belgium. Belgium then need to beat Panama.

A repeat of the scoreline from 98 would be most welcome... if not the off field stuff

Placing any weight on Fifa rankings is ridiculous, as I'm sure you're aware.

Poland and Switzerland are comfortably in the top 10 yet will both struggle to get out the groups. Spain are 10th, and are expected to go very close (before all of this stuff with the manager).

QFs is a realistic success.

It just gives a bit of weight to considering the relative strengths of sides.  In recent years I've see England struggle against sides who are considered inferior, to the extent that I can see no reason why we should expect to beat Tunisia.

For me it's down to mental strength and desire, qualities sadly lacking in our players.  THe WC presents a golden opportunity for lads from countries like Tunisia.... what you might call Gamboa syndrome... Christian Gamboa, had a tidy WC for Costa Rica, who won the group we failed to qualify from, and on the back of it got a nice Prem contract (WBA) then a move to Celtic.... 30 games in 4 years, but lucrative.

Our lot just don't have that sort of motivation.

Linesmen, or whatever they are called nowadays, have been instructed not to flag for close offside decisions.

Wonder what definition of 'close' is going to be used.

When you think about it, makes sense... there has always been a schism between the Real and Barca players.  Barca players are not going to take kindly to being told what to do by Real's next manager.

Iniesta, would have the status to close that divide.  Anyway will be interesting to see what they do.  Pep is probably around somewhere.

How many of those were even in 90 mins? Paraguay and the last 2 according to my memory

Anyway im tipping France, quality squad as long they can avoid falling out with each other.

As for England, itís a great group and a great last 16 potential draw against a team from the weakest group. Should get to QF against Brazil or Germany and thatís where it will end

....meanwhile, looking ahead, the joint USA, Canada, Mexico bid just got the nod for the 2026 WC (with 48 teams - so Scotland will have a chance!).  Hopefully, Trump will be long gone by then or travel between the three countries could be a long, drawn-out affair.

Sure it was not entirely down to that...

'The US, Canada and Mexico joint bid is promising Fifa associations vast profits of $11bn (£8.2bn). That compares with around $6bn (£4.48bn) from Morocco.'

Nice piece there about the most mental player possibly ever to grace the CG in Swindon colours.

I will be interested to see football in UHD on the beeb, about time the technology came up to speed, the few bits I have seen on Sky Q in UHD have been not a lot better than HD TBH though.

I think for the first time in a while, I am fully behind this England side. Of course I don't expect us to win the tournament, but I reckon this group of players seem relatively likeable and seem to have an idea of how they want to play.

I also think Gareth Southgate comes across very well in interviews and I would like to see his side do well for him.

Gareth is a nice chap... he comes across like a geography teacher, taking a bunch of kids on a field trip. He's in a good position atm.  The realisation that as a country we're not very good at this football lark, seems to have finally sunk in.

Further, the idea for better or worse, that the best way to improve prospects is by bringing in kids through the age groups and at the same time develop their coaches, looks to be flavour of the month.   This needs time and continuity....and Gareth provides that.  I would hope that he could survive not getting out of the group, and get a shot at the next Euro.

Otherwise the logic of the "model" is that Ady Boothroyd will be next England boss  :)

Saudi Arabia are as long as 9/1 to beat Russia today.

They have won 2 of the last 5, and only lost to Italy and Germany by single goals.

Russia on the other hand are the worst team in the competition by some distance.

9/1 for any football match is ridiculous. 9/1 in favour of the better side is ludicrous.

this is very disheartening to read. I took advantage of the Betfair offer for new customers of Russia to win at 100/1 thinking that the hosts will get off to a new start Surely they'll win this one at home?

I've had a tenner on the draw at 16/5, it feels like expectations of... let's call it "normal host nation bias" are being priced into this game.

What on earth was the maximum stake for 100/1 on Russia BO, 20p?

The game has 0-0 written all over it to me, Russia are pretty shit and SA struggle to score regularly they have only scored more than 2 goals once in the last 17 games.

Very unusual if the host nation don't make it through to the knockout rounds but it could happen this WC.

I actually think you're right, it will be a 0-0 or 1-1, but at 9/1 you can't not have a £10 on it.

I've also got 2 or fewer 0-0s in the tournament though, so 0-0 tonight is a nightmare result for me!

I wonder how many of the WC nations we have/haven't had players from in the past? I can't think of any Saudis, Peruvians, Panamanians or Costa Ricans immediately, but I bet it's actually a surprisingly long list.

When Southgate was appointed I was disgusted with the decision but he's won me round with the changes he's made to the system and personnel.

I also like the way he's closed the gap between the players, fans and media.

Just hope we avoid Colombia in the last 16 as I've thought for ages they'll knock us out if we meet.

I'm always behind England in a tournament and as much as ever this time around.

Players with appearances at a WC either as current (rare) or later or previous are small in number.  As for countries represented....  England, Scotland, RoI, Argentina, Norway, Australia, New Zealand; think that's it.

For the first time in a while I think the England squad are quite likeable. Southgate appears to be quite a calm influence while encouraging the younger players. I'm just happy to go into a tournament with none of the golden generation who were just shit on the international stage. really glad Southgate got rid of Rooney. There's not the stench of failure around the squad. There's a lot less "circus" around the team now with no Rooney, Beckham etc.
I don't think we'll do well but it will be invaluable experience for most of the squad who will have other tournaments in them. Most people wold have picked a similar squad so I don't know what more Southgate could do.

Smeeton's 4th Rule states that televised domestic games should contain an STFC link, either in players, dug out, or com box/punditry, or ref if it's Simon Hooper.

It can apply to WC's although obviously more difficult. Nestor, as when he was cone carrying for Pekerman at Argentina always welcome.

This.

Southgate seems to treat the players properly as people and not pamper them and the team spirit of the young uns is pretty spot on, and the avergae age of the team is so low that even if they fail badly this time they will almost all still be in the squad for the next tournament with that little extra experience behind them.

I don't think there is any chance we will win but we could ruffle a few feathers and not roll over to some of the "supposedly inferior" teams as England have done in the past so often.

Bad news for Reg:

A prominent Russian MP has been heavily criticised after urging women not to have sex with foreign men during the World Cup.

Communist Party MP Tamara Pletnyova told a Moscow Radio station that she was "not a nationalist" but believed Russian women should avoid sex with people "of a different race" because "their children suffer".

I know the average racist can get a bit technical, but ethnic Russians are descended from the Rus, Viking traders, who entered what is now Russia, parts of Ukraine and Belarus, by long boat and settled. So technically Northern Europeans, don't think they'd have a problem with a Saxon like me.  :)

Southern slavs like Bulgars are a bit different, something Turkic, of the Steppe about them. Of course there are millions of these in Russia... I like it in the women, hint of the exotic... :)

They remind me of us from a few seasons back, trying to play out from the back without the personnel with the footballing ability to actually do so!

I am tempted to have a tickle for a draw at 25/1 as Russia look equally shit and won't be able to keep up the pressing for the whole game, plus the Saudi's cannot be that shit in the second half.

Early on I thought the Saudis could at least draw, right up to the 2nd goal!

Why the hell they did not play the ball on the ground to a pacey striker at every opportunity when he was up against a 6 foot 2 very near 39 year old with the pace of a slow puncture and turning circle of the QE2 is beyond me.

Russia very deserved winner and this could well give them the momentum now to have a good tournament.

Everyone is wanking over CR7's hattrick. No doubt it was great but Costa's controlled half volley on the rise was the goal of the match. Sublime, purely because those attempts easily go miles wide/high or high and wide 9 out of 10 times. Struck like a Nadal towering down on an aggressive slice with control and precision, yet still retaining power.

Iím enjoying this tournament a lot more than previous years. Itís good to see the fancied nations struggling to beat the lesser sides. It gives me hope England could get a few decent results.

Looking forward to tomorrow now, Southgate hasnít put a foot wrong yet and even the press donít seem as keen to rip into players before a ball has been kicked as much as usual. I think a lot of that is down to Southgate making all 23 of the squad accessible to the press and letting them ask what they wish.
Itís nice to know we will have a set way of playing tomorrow, refreshing after the shambles of previous years

The Brazilian love in does my nut in.  As Danny Baker tweeted

'For all my life broadcasters/media have fawned, swooned and grovelled at the very mention of Brazil. For the first half of my life it was warranted. These days young folk must be so confused. #AnotherAveragePerformance'

It just made me realise that at 47 years old I don't think Ive actually lived through a genuinely thrilling Brazil team (to be fair in '74 I was 3, I had other interests)  A load of  superb players, but never a great 'team'.  An in the meantime the media continues to wank their cocks off because once they were good.

I was going downhill at the time and tried to slow down a bit when I hit the brakes they just went to the floor and did nothing. Roared down to 2nd and pulling on the handbrake when, luckily, the descent levelled out and I managed to stop the thing. A Fiat Doblo. Got an exchange one and, fuck me, the engine management system warning light came on. They tried fobbing me off about the poor quality petrol was Ďprobablyí the cause.

Am waiting for a 2nd replacement.

QF if one side tops their group and the other finishes second. If both win their groups (or both come second) then I believe it pushes that out to the final.

The last truly great Brazilian side was 1970.... the 58 and 62 vintages were also decent.   The 70 side coincided with colour TV occuring in the UK.... the first time that most people had seen the shirt.  It did have an impact on the collective British psyche.  For some reason Brazil then went in for a more prosaic European style.... it wasn't pretty. I saw them at Wembley in the mid 70's and the best bit was watching the warm up.  By 82 the cavaliers were back in vogue and the 82 vintage promised much but failed to deliver, so the roundheads got back in favour.  A couple more trophies were added by less than stellar teams playing limited football.

This present side looks like it is trying to play with style and Neymar is always fun.  The Swiss definitely got the running on VAR in opener, I suppose that FIFA HQ being in Switzerland was just coincidence.

The 2nd half was a case of playing against a team with 10 men behind the ball. It would have been a very different game had at least one of those blatant penalties on Kane been given.

I thought we looked good going forward at times, but I'm not sure about us at the back. Better teams will punish us. A bit toothless in front of goal as well. Regardless, I quite enjoyed that.

I truly hope that we play differently when we are up against a team who can play football. The problem we face as do other teams like England is that every Tunisia type opponent see us as their World Cup Final. We looked Williamsesque for most of the game and our finishing looked rushed. As for the Ďofficialsí on field and the VAR team in the back office what game were they officiating?

Who makes the decision as to whether the VAR is used? Is it the referee?  Two blatant penalties and it wasn't used.

Started well and then went off the boil.  Tunisia clearly happy with a point, but I always felt we would score again though and up popped Harry Kane.

Rashford to start instead of Sterling on Sunday and I'd like to see Loftus-Cheek start as well.

I thought the exact same thing at times in the 2nd half. Again, though, I think that's because we were playing a team with 11 men behind the ball (in the 2nd half). We looked more potent going forward in the 1st half, albeit with the wasteful finishing. Hopefully nerves will settle in that regard.

That was hard to watch mainly due to Tunisia doing everything they could simply to stop us winning. Don't remember them doing anything second half which I found strange since they looked a decent passing side at times in the first. Still they nearly got their point.

This World Cup has got 'played well but exited in the quarters due to controversial circumstances/penalties' written all over it. Loving the tournament though.

I like Southgate''s England. Never thought I'd type that when he was first appointed.

My point exactly :)  Tried hard, can't fault the effort, result good, But oh so frustrating fpr large parts. Kane, Trippier, Maguire I thought were good. Sterling. Lingard, and Ali appalling. Footballs 80% effort, 19% decision making, and 1% skill. We can do the first and last, but rarely do the middle bit right.

Maguire looked good as he strode out of defence with the ball.
Given that he's the "least footballing" of our back three, you do have to wonder why it took til the last 5 for Walker to start getting forwards and interchanging with Trippier.

Ashley Young looked ok, until he got the chance to cross, when he went back onto his right foot.

Alli, Sterling and Lingard were all poor

Title: Re: The world Cup Russia 2018 Thread

Thought it was, in some ways, a very good England performance.  Played the ball around well, long and short, in the first half.  Chances missed, certainly but Kane was as deadly as any with two goals from two shots.

Second half looked interesting to start with.  We pressed really high and I thought we might pressurise a crucial mistake.  As they settled it became a game ideally to find the killer pass but Delle Ali was already fading. We started to lack creativity and were becoming one-paced.  The substitutions were correctly made - if not quite promptly enough.  It didn't matter in the end.

On the other hand I give a great deal of credit to Tunisia.   You can deserve a point regardless of your contribution to shots and corners, possession and entertainment.  That's how the game is when a weaker team is up against a stronger one.  I felt that the BBC TV team could have accommodated a non English perspective.  Don't know any Tunisians myself but there must be some Arab/north African players available - Hameur Bouazza or Sofiane Zaboooooouuuuub even ;) if Riyad Mahrez comes in a bit pricey now.

England did overcome the defence-focussed Tunisians.  Other bigger names have already struggled similarly and some with less success.  C'mon Ingerland.

For the first time in a long time, watching England felt positive.

Yes, there's still work needed, the team is clearly not the finished article yet but given the circumstances they did very well.

I get the feeling that Tunisia saw an inexperienced team against them and applied every one of the dark arts; from the penalty area wrestling to delaying every England free kick (standing over the ball, insisting it be moved back 2 yards) and the array of niggly fouls, it looked very much like they wanted to get England down to 10 men and kill the game. Full credit to England for avoiding frustration and finally getting their reward.

We don't normally win games like that. Some of the comments generally have been ridiculous - "same old shit", "too slow" etc. Listening to Keown on the comms was like sitting in the Arkells with the FORWARD brigade.

The second they got the pen, Tunisia (the best team in Africa) sat in, kicked, dived and moaned and made it very hard for us. We still created enough chances to win the game, and did win the game.

Only blot on the copybook is finishing.

RLC looks head and shoulders above Alli in this set up. I'd start him and Rashford for Sterling against Panama.

Tunisia did what they planned to do (disrupt and time waste) very well, helped by a ref who seemed well out of his depth, although I don't understand why our players when an opposing player stands 3 yards from a free kick just doesn't take a quick one against them as that normally leads to a booking, we possibly need to get a bit more streetwise.

Sterling just looks out of his depth, very skillful player technically (at times) but with no football brain and just goes blind alleys and gives it away, rarely any end product. Rather exposes the myth that Pep has made him a better player, no he has just surrounded him with better players! We looked so much better when Rashford came on,

Fuck knows what was going on with Alli, looked injured for most of the game bar the first 15 minutes, if that's the case I would assess and see, be tempted to put RLC in as again we seemed better and more dynamic - plus still think Alli has got a red card in him if he plays all the games.

BTW Kane scored two good goals but apart from that he seemed to be rarely in the box when the ball was played in, not sure what was going on there?

Generally a typical England experience as a viewer, frustration and then relief....

FWIW I enjoyed the match yesterday, I thought all the England players really wanted to win for each other and the relief showed.

There are no teams easy to beat at the WC finals they are all there on merit and I thought Tunisia offered very little but were hapy to defend in numbers and kick us at every opportunity which should have got us at least 1 penalty, whats the point of VAR if they miss as obvious a penalty as the first one on Kane?

We passed the ball well under very difficult conditions but a few players were not good enough for me.

Alli and Sterling should not start for us they are just nowhere near good enough I would much rather see Rashford and Loftus-Cheek, both players came on and the workrate went right up, Sterling and Alli are lazy and lacking bite in attack, the other player I would change would be Young, who impressed me in his last few England games but yesterday his final ball was woeful and his free kick late on was terrible. I think Rose is a better option.

The jury is still out on Lingaard too, I think there are better options than him.

Otherwise we did the job against a hard working very defensive side that in the past England would have struggled against, Kane did what he does best, 6 yard poacher.

Hopefully we will have a better ref for the rest of the tournament.

Bring on Panama Sunday.

All English born and bred. Very old school comment.
I also haven't heard anyone use that racist term in about 20 years, how very backwards.

I'd imagine unless there are injuries, fatigue etc, GS will stick with the same strategy, v Panama.  In the first 30 that we did well it was the running of Dele, Lingard and Sterling which caused them problems.

England's back 3 passed and recycled the ball quickly, particularly in comparison with Belgium.  Maguire played very well and committed Tunisian players when he drove forward with the ball.  Trippier and Henderson were excellent.  Would prefer Rose ahead of Young and Rashford ahead of Sterling.  I reckon Southgate will start with the starting XI vs Panama injuries permitting.  I haven't seen England play as well as they did in the first half in a long time.

Alli having a knock is a great excuse to "rest" him and play RLC. RLC is an absolute monster running at a deep back 5.

The good thing is we've got 3 points on the board having played a cynical, horrible bunch of cheats and a useless ref / VAR. Another day, that could have been 5-0. There's plenty to work on but I think most people are pretty happy. Its good to play Panama next and try and build some momentum going into the Belgium game.
Agree about RLC and would put him ahead of Sterling - he's a unit and at full flow looks a real beast. Alli needs a big kick up the arse. Other than that would keep as is.

Think that's a little unfair re. Alli, looked brilliant until a minor injury, probably best to lay the blame at coaching staff in this instance, should have taken him off as soon as it became apparent he was no longer at 100%.

I think one of the greatest strengths of this England squad is that we have very few 'stars' and there is a depth to every position, we could name a couple of different starting line-ups and few would argue that such and such should start ahead of so an so.

In that regard if any one player is less than 100%, subs already made permitting, we should make the  change early.

Seen a lot of "Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Spain, France will batter this England team" type comments since the game.

Of the above teams only France got a win from their opening game.

None looked to have anything I'm particularly worried about.

This tournament is wide open.

No, but we should (not definitely will) beat Panama. That would takes us through to a winnable last 16 game.

If we got to the quaters we will sort of be over-achieving.

Then lose to Brazil or Germany. Because they always make the quaters.

Looking forward to the Poland/Senegal game at 4.

Poland have a decent squad and have qualified for the last few tournaments with ease. Unfortunately they have been unable to repeat that form at the tournaments themselves. Were very unlucky to get knocked out of the Euros by Portugal 2 years ago and if Lewandowski is on form, I think they should be able to get out of the groups.

There's a joke going round here in Germany, roughly translated:

In the Junior school class the children are asked by their teacher what their father does to earn his Brot. One by one they say baker, bricklayer, accountant etc. Just one little boy left, Joachim. Quietly he explains his father does naked pole dancing in a gay bar and if customer really likes him he will spend the night with him. At break time the teacher keeps Joachim back and asks if what he said was true. Joachim sniffles: actually he plays in the Germany football team but it would have been too embarrassing to admit it.

The Germans can laugh at themselves, a bit...

Will take a good side to knock out Croatia.

Been telling a Messi fanboy all day that Argentina were screwed this evening. Rakitic, Modric and Brozovic against basically an ageing Mascherano was never going to end well. Add to that a ropey defence and shocking keeper and you end up with a top heavy shitheap of a team.

Croatia mid field axis of Modric and Rakitic is arguably the best in this tournament. There's also some very tidy back up, in the likes of Mateo Kovacic.

Good to see some old skool Argie kicking, but the Croats aren't averse to a bit x rated tackling themselves. Sime Vrsaljko, plays for Atletico, and is right out of the Simeone skool of Argie bargy.

I don't think that's completely true. That game was era defining and if the commentators were being solemn then they were reacting to the atmosphere within the ground.

Even the German players, Schurrle aside, toned it down in the second half. Could and should have twisted that proverbial knife even more.
