Title: What’s the best/worst you’ve seen us play?
Post by: The Artist Formerly Known as Audrey on Sunday, May 20, 2018, 18:14:20
Although I started watching STFC in 1968 I can’t remember much about individual games until about 1990.

The best was our Hoddle 91/92 season. Early season game away at Ipswich on a lovely Tuesday evening. Brilliant 4-1 performance that first got me hoping we’d do well that season. Micky Hazard was superb.

Some of the home games this season hav3 been poor in the extreme, but for sheer lack of effort a 7-0 spanking at Bolton takes the biscuit.

Best I've seen us the Sunderland PO win.
Worst a flip between Histon, the 0-3 at Orient under Hart, and the Preston Mauling at Wembley.

Best would be the 4-3 aet win v Arsenal.
Worst got to be Histon away, or Millwall in the play offs.

Best I've seen us play, 2-1 home win v Newcastle in 92 and 4-0 away at the 82ers in 91. Worst - the 4-0 home defeat to Rovers.

Watford away 4-0 under Hoddle early nineties was pure class as the best. Amazing support that day. The worst for me was Blackpool home under Lou . 2 -6 home defeat and Alan Mayes ( hero ) played for them . Again our fans were still brilliant not sure  if it was support or piss taking by our lot

The 7-1 dicking at Forest. We were shown how to play football that day. The upside being, it was the start of a fairly decent squad (minus Arron Brown). It was so bad it became comical. The Forest fans willing willing us to score at 6-0. Strangely enough, it was still a good day out.

Same here for best...amazing...was only 1-0 but Sunderland couldn't have complained if it had been 5. Tony Norman kept them in it.

The worst???...now you're asking...

Could have been any one of dozens but pretty much at random I'll say...Oldham 4 Town 0 26/4/03. We were well on our way back to the car when the cheer went up for the 4th goal in the 83rd minute. Truly shocking.

Both of mine have been mentioned already, or at least the ones that first spring to mind.

The Bolton 7-0 was probably the end of my youthful enthusiasm, and wanting to get to as many games as possible.

Leeds 3-0 at home for the best, although I remember little about any game I've ever attended, so that's more based on a feeling than anything else.

I haven't been to many of the classics...

The Port Vale 5-0 was a great day after a long time of nothiness and so-close-yet-so-fars.

Worst? Swindon Town 0-3 Colchester United on New Years Day in 2005.

There's been many a worst, but losing 4-0 at Peterborough on a rainy day in November 2000 was a dismal performance.

Beating Sunderland 5-3 at home in September 1991 was the first time we'd played them since they stole our rightful place in the top flight. The score makes it sound closer than it was, we were 3-0 up at half time and that is one of the best 45 minutes of football i've seen.

The best? The league game in 1963 at the County Ground against  Manchester City with a largely home grown side winning 3-0. The crowd was 28,000 plus. Happy days.
The worst? Take yer pick but for me personally a game versus Grimsby Town in the late 70's. I travelled over from Sheffield in a small stopper train without heating and arrived in Cleethorpes with a howling gale coming in of the North Sea. So, frozen and wet through I watched us get stuffed 3-1 with Peter Eastoe getting our goal in a largely forgettable game. Needless to say the train back to Sheffield was late and was still without heating. Abject misery.

Beating Arsenal 4-3 in 79 was the best I have seen us play although we have had some great games, the Sunderland game at Wembley.

Leicester at Wembley wasn't bad either. Home to Bury 8-0 in 79, The play off semi vs Blackburn away before the Sunderland final, beating Fulham with Marsh, Moore and Best 5-0 in 77.

The worst, 5-1 home defeat to Bristol Rovers, the 5-0 home to Luton this year, the 6-0 home defeat to Ipswich, Preston at Wembley is probably THE worst capitulation though.

I will add one more game to this which was one of the worst first 51 mins and the best last 30 mins of a game away at Birmingham City in 93, 4-1 down after the first 51 mins, playing really poorly then after 60 mins we score another 5 goals in 30 mins to win 6-4.

I forgot about the Preston game, not surprising really  :)

.... Worst - the 4-0 home defeat to Rovers.
Worst

Plenty of competition.  The surrender in the second half at home to Luton.  First time I (nearly) left before the end.
Defeats at the Pox in the days we were not used to it. Rovers (h) 0-4 incidentally was redeemed by the promising 10 minute cameo (debut?) of young Matt Ritchie.  Shame though there was not one other player he could play with that day.

Best

Rather fewer  :)

3-1 Arsenal at Wembley, winning when it really mattered and, yet again, after being pegged back late by tier 1 oppo.  Only heard the radio commentary of the 4-3 home win v. same oppo but that sounded like an extraordinary night.

So hard to pick specific ones, but Leeds 3-0 up there for sure. Leeds in the LC too.

Worst - 7-1 at Forest, 3-0 at Histon come to mind. Millwall away last year was the worst though. Only time I've walked out at HT.

No one has mentioned it yet - best ever for me was the away game at Birmingham,   4-0 down,   6-4 up, thanks to the maestro Hoddle,
worst ?  Perm any one from dozens, as said before  0-4 v brovers, 0-2 home to the pox, but probably the worst was any of the games we have played at the new Wembley,  take your pick,  they were all a crap non performance from the town.

Its hard to pick because dodgy memory + context muddy the waters. Given a combination of factors:

I'd say the worst performance was Preston, but I was more deflated by the Millwall Wembley defeat. The lowest I've felt in a semi non-significant game was the Cheltenham 2-1 defeat when we were on a shit run with Kingy. In truth, there are

Best, I missed all the good Wembley games. So baring that in mind the highest point was beating Charlton at the Valley to get to new Wembley..Best is hard to know. Elland Road, 3-0 win in recent times I guess.

From recent memory, Leeds away was amazing.

Worst, losing 2-1 at home to Notts Co in 2011 which pretty much sealed our relegation.

Notts County at home.
Jenny Davis had delivered a very emotional speech before kick off and finished it with a rousing come on Swindon.
We’d have murdered Barcelona that day, never seen a Town team so up for it...

Worst:
There’s plenty to choose from, but I’d say most games from the 83/84 or 2015/16 seasons could fit in here.
Obviously we have had some thumpings over the years, but for me the worst was Preston at Wembley, people have mentioned the other two Wembley defeats, but we did actually make a game of the other two (Charlie’s bobble springs to mind).

Best:
Sunderland at Wembley, the 4-0 at Ashton Gate, the Beauchamp game at the CG, Liverpool away in the Premier (we should have won).
But my favourite will always be the 4-3 against Arsenal.

Was that Notts County game the one where that prick Michael Rose showed his intelligence by heading a ball that was on the floor back to the keeper letting Lee Hughes in to score?

wouldn't disagree with that. I would add stoke away in the same year as the Arse and home to Fulham 5-0 with Best etc. More latterly the 3-0 v Leeds was an excellent performance.
In terms of the worst, Eastleigh at home a couple of years of years ago was total shite as was most home games that year. A 5-0 dicking at the Scum when we got relegated was pretty hard to take - shite performance.
The problem is there are s many in either category.
