Interestingly, a mooted tour of Ireland could well coincide with the Pox's tour of Ireland.

I'll have to call a few of the Kerry lads!

I remember Hoddle & Gorman taking the team to Holland for one pre season tour, apparently after the last game the team were almost as pissed as the fans that had gone. :)

The irony is that the players would get slaughtered on Social Media now

I was serving in Germany at the time... spent the weekend with the team, it was a bit surreal sitting pitchside with the team between games.  Seem to recall Gorman being a cracking bloke

The two Holland trips I went on were great. I've still got my 'borrowed' Heineken apron.

Gorman was certainly a cracking bloke on the first Finland tour - very personable and accommodating. In contrast (and this is not a criticism), McMahon showed no interest in being fan-friendly on the second Finland tour.

Power is looking for planning permission for house building at the potential new training facility.... Highworth's MP is Justin Tomlinson, who has "interests" in Supermarine.  It is always wise to try and keep the local Tory MP on board in any planning dispute... perhaps coincidence, perhaps not.

Tomlinson arranged for Wonga to sponsor Supermarine to the tune of 30 grand.... the SS fella, donated a similar sum to Tomlinson's campaign fund. Tomlinson leaked details about forthcoming government policy changes on payday loan companies to Wonga.  Tomlinson suspended from Parliament and forced to blub an apology to the House.

All just coincidence, of course.

The Melksham game has now been moved to Saturday 7th July and currently a 3pm kick off.
According to Melksham’s twitter, if England finish 2nd in the group the kick off time will move to 12:30pm to avoid a potential clash with an England quarter final.

Great. So after being told for months that STFC were going on tour to the Republic of Ireland, we are told with ten days' notice that they are going to Spain instead! Thanks for thinking of the fans who wanted to travel. I had already bought my Irish Euros, now I will lose on the exchange rate when I swap them to Spanish ones.

If you contacted the club and they said 'yep, it's happening' then I'll wind my neck-in otherwise it's just unfortunate.

Pre-season isn't really about the fans but I'm sure they appreciate the time and support.

Enjoy Spain.

'Brown also made the trip to see goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux play for Waterford in a visit to Ireland, which also doubled up as a scouting mission as the club look to finalise plans for a pre-season tour

"That's why I went over to Waterford, I travelled to Dublin on Monday afternoon and then I went to see the facility at Waterford," added Brown.'

If you are trying to make a joke about the currency, you've already been called out on it. Wooshes do not apply from this point on.

If you are genuine... the club did not confirm they were going to Ireland so you only have yourself to blame. Also, if you are genuine, The Euro is the Euro no matter where you go you fuckwit.

What does 'whoosh' mean? Genuine question.

The currency ding-dong has brought the attention of some you that the club's shockingly short notice of ten days of an overseas trip that STILL does not include details of matches to be played. Those WHO ARE INTERESTED would like to know.

Check out how other clubs inform their fans of their p!ans. Coach to Rangers v Bury friendly anyone?

Don't need to. The media got in a wank frenzy about it (as did many others) when he was only on trial with a potential community role being offered.

Of course since then, he's played for the Scum and for Plymouth again. Which I would say would be a lot harder for the families involved in the drink driving incident. However, I'm also certain he's had to deal with the mistake he made in a totally psychological way.

Don't need to go over old ground. Many of us whilst driving have been under the influence. It should be zero tolerance. Period.

Just back, not much to report really. Its a preseason friendly, what do you expect (plus I'm knackered, so didn't fully concentrate).

First half was fairly standard pre-season. Took a while to break them down. Mullings looked handy, but its Ciren Town  who are of good standard, but nowhere near league - so you can't really judge . Oldham from memory did no more than OK. McGlashen didn't stand out.

Second half we looked a bit sharper and faster in pass. Knoyle was bombing on down the right, but largely ignored. Brighton kiddy looked to have a bit of pace while dribbling, look forward to seeing more. Anderson looked lively. But we fell asleep a bit in the last 5.

Oh and Pook is getting a middle age spread.

Thanks for the brief summary Batch we sound like we did ok with 2 seperate teams.

I am not overly disappointed Moore won't be playing for us this year TBH he was almost as dodgy as RCC at times, I do hope we get another keeper in as competition for Vigs as I don't think Henry is enough on his own and I am not convinced about McCormick or the reaction towards him.

I thought people were saying Robertson had left us, that doesn't seem to be the case as he played last night.

Still a win is a win and its all confidence boosting and getting players to fitness that matters most.

Interesting to hear PB say that he prefers 2 strikers if he had them rather than a lone striker.

Shamir Mullings is a huge lump but with a poor scoring record it seems but if he can play the target man role...who knows, Nile Ranger didn't have much of a scoring record but was a very good target man. Not a massive surprise either as PB had him as a youngster at Southend.

The one time I saw Moore play was at Cambridge. It looked like they had dragged some bloke out of the crowd. Worst goalkeeping display I had seen since Nicky Hammond back in the day.

Moore was better than RCC IMO but not by much, the Cambridge and Exeter games he was awful but against Accrington he looked like he could develop into a useful keeper, I would rather we sign a keeper who is already developed enough for 1st team football though.

Found Brown's comments on BBC Wilts quite interesting about Dunne.  Sees him as a number 8 rather than a sitting/holding midfielder.  I'm inclined to agree.  Presumably we'll be signing a couple of holding midfielders.  Wouldn't be surprised if Martin Smith is one of them as Neil McDonald seems to rate him.

Dunne played that role vs Accrington in the last game and he looked much more comfortable there right up until his sending off.

PB does seem to know how to get the best out of Dunne who looks a totally different player to the one under Flipflop.

I recon Rolls Royce put out a side made up of owners of Rolls Royce cars.

Described here as a "ruthless win" I would guess that Swindon U16 schoolboys could have put 10 past them.

Swindon Schools under 16's used to be pretty strong nationally.... reached the final of schools tournament in 69 and 84.  This was when Swindon could be considered a football town, and the local council was Labour run and used to put in tidy sums into secondary schools.

I've been in big crowds for schoolboy matches at the CG for quarter/semi finals etc

A FGR fan said this -

According to Cooper we haven't done any defensive work in training yet, main focus has been on fitness and possession/attacking moves.

Hopefully we'll get round to doing a bit more defensive work before we play Leeds on Tuesday.

I often look out for Brackley’s score. We drive through every other week on the way to games and they used to have a board up saying who they were playing. I started to notice it in the PDC doc 4 season and if I recall they got promoted in that season too

Well, that was encouraging.

Negatives - none

Positives - Alzate is classy, very classy. Smith looks an excellent carrier, pass it on player. McGlashan likes to run direct at the opposition. Adebayo can be summed up in one word - Languid. A sort of Ben Gladwin up front.

Got to keep the best for last, though. Anderson was superb throughout. Great to have Vigs back.

Joe Romanski looks like a real good player in the making - shame about his build.

I know it’s only a friendly but we were better than WBA in that first game.

Yes.

Very encouraging first 60 mins. Town looked like a team who knew what they were doing. Round pegs in round holes and everyone seemed to want to get on the ball and move it forward.

My old man said Alzate is a 'gem' and that Town will make the play-offs. Heady stuff indeed.

I only went because something else got postponed but was glad I did.

Alzate looks the kind of player who could receive the ball just inside the opposition half, do a bit of magic and release one of the strikers quickly. Can’t really think of any players we’ve had recently to compare him with.

Smith reminded me of Kasim. Brown seems to have wonders with Anderson, though. Always involved, good control, beating his man. If he can conjure up the same kind of tune from Woolery, when fit, we could be on to something.

Still, until the real stuff starts it’s a bit daft going overboard.

Obviously this '60 minute stroll in the summer sun' (which you didn't witness) doesn't translate to a 90 min league game (sorry those of us that went couldn't magic up the conditions of an April weekend in Royton) - it was what it was, and the 60 minute format was better than a more traditional 90 min pre-season game with a change of teams at half-time.

For me, seeing a positive way of playing, set-up and as I posted earlier, round pegs in round holes, was good to see. That gives me a better indication of how well the season might go than the result or whether the sun was shining.

Some other observations:

Iandolo took the corners (well, I think he took all of them - Taylor stayed back).
We kept a player near the half-way line at oppo corners.
It looked like we played 433 when we had the ball (although it appeared quite fluid), and as soon as the oppo keeper had the ball we set up 4141.
Alzate = Micky Hazard (ish)
Romanski didn't look out of place.
Any new signings need to be good enough to play in the starting eleven as much of the second string on show were very much second string.

Of course yesterday's game was never going to inform whether we get promoted or relegated, but I'd have rather seen what was on show over a headless chicken performance by a bunch of experienced 4th division cloggers.

Yes agree that first 60 minute match showed some very encouraging signs. Alzate was very impressive, similar to Luongo both in looks and particularly style of play. Smith played the holding midfielder role quite effectively and built play well from deep - McCourt will be his competition for that role. Anderson transformed from last season, far more enthusiastic/involved - definite starter on that showing on left of a front 3. Landolo also linked up well although corners were a mixed bag. Think Dunne will cover for Knoyle at right back and Romanski for Taylor at left back as Brown is looking at bringing in 2 more centre backs rather than full backs. Robertson did well and looked more composed than last season, though think that combination of Conroy/Lancashire and 2 newbies will fight it out for the centre back spots. Need to see more of  McGlashan and Adebayo before passing judgement - both showed glimpses of some ability, but not consistent. Second 60 minutes showed why we need new recruits as really only Twine looked even close to the standard of the first 60 minutes.

I do think we've got a bit of brawn as well as guile, however, I'd like to see a bit more brawn brought in if Brown gets the chance. And I completely agree, in the past we've witnessed good pre-seasons followed by poor seasons and vice versa. I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw yesterday and it was even more of a success because we didn't seem to pick up any injuries.

A quick round of the weekends friendly games from other teams in our division.

Alfreton 2-3 Morecambe
Ashton 1-5 Macclesfield
Barrow 1-0 Crewe
Cawley 0-2 Norwich
Cirencester 0-4 Cheltnumb
Chelmesford 1-4 Cambridge
Chippenham 1-0 Newport
Curzon 0-2 Oldham
Gainsborough 2-0 Mansfield XI
Lincoln 0-1 Sheff Weds
Notts County 1-4 Derby
Retford 0-5 Mansfield
Penrith 0-2 Carlisle
Stevenage 3-2 Portsmouth
Swindon 1-3 WBA
Tranmere 1-2 Wigan
Truro 0-6 Exeter
Weston 6-6 FGR

I see Cheltnumb have rejected bids of £500k+ from Peterborough and Portsmouth for Eisa, he has to be off soon, they are still holding out for £1.5m for him.

Getting beat 2-0 at Chippenham is a fucking disgrace, sack PB sack Power, sack the team, booooooooo, our squad isn't strong enough, never will be in this division, boooooooooooo.

Nice to hear Conroy got a run out, I too doubt he will be fit enough for a few months but hes going the right way it seems, lets hope theres no more set backs.

I see it was a very young squad, did they trial Dunne at RB? the teamsheet seems to imply that, I am sure McCourt had a good run out too.

Results mean nothing at this stage anyway its about blending in and team bonding, we could well see a few of that team play in our first team at times this coming season, I doubt it will be on a worse surface though.

JD was RB. Looks like we're going to use flexible midfielders as back up FBs this season and instead keep collecting CMs.

Still need a CB, another utility forward, another CM and a ST.

Don't think it will be as long as 2 months. If he's fit enough to start a game now, it should just building up fitness and stamina. Start of September he should be good to go.

Answering my own question what to do about it?   I guess PB has a pretty good idea if Lancashire and Conroy are going to be back.... at all/any time soon.  Assuming they will be, it's understandable, not to waste a full contract..... so we should get in a couple of loan kids or maybe use the players with no club pool once the window closes, like with Preston and McGivern.   Far from ideal, as it means no time to work on defensive organisation.  However it's where we are.

PB stated in the last few days that a striker and 2 experienced CB's were his priority signings, I am sure he is aware of the situtation and will do something in the next 2 weeks about it and pull one ut of the bag, much as he has done with Diagoraga.

bit if a problem in that I don't know whose who, no names on the back:)

feared the worst after first 5, we looked well off. but the game was much more even after that. mcGlashen looks full of running, Anderson had a few good touches, bit disappointed with adebeyo in the air but he's working hard. some nice neat passing from town and a few chances created, mainly from crosses.

if this wasn't a meaningless preseason if be encouraged.

however we aren't without issue. we look susceptable to crosses/corners into the box, and maybe to pace too.. that said the Pompey #10 is quick. Still think we miss a clinical threat.

er, a bit shit summary, sorry

Playing some decent stuff here, took a while for us to get any possession in their half but once we did we've pretty much stayed there although they actually look more dangerous than we do, classic big man, little man partnership up top for them.

Alzate looks very promising, not afraid of the physical aspect of the game either.  Worried for Iandolo for a bit, maybe not quite ready to play CM, he's grown into it though.  Anderson looking pretty decent, as suggested by those that came last week.  McGlashan not really had much impact as yet and the big lad from Fulham looks like he needs some minutes to me, not quite sharp enough at this stage.  Smith looking pretty composed, keeping the ball well.  Conroy looks comfortable enough, think it's actually the first time I've seen him play save for a couple on iPlayer early last season I guess.

Looking forward to seeing what McCourt and Diagouraga can bring to the party in the second half, assuming they both come on, which they will of course.

Enjoyed that, reasonably entertaining, quite a few positives to take from that.  We all know where we need improvement and that will be addressed.  CM looks finished to me, good options in there.

Adebayo looked much better in the 2nd half, worked their defence much harder than he managed to in the 1st.

Sounds promising but it appears we still need a striker and 2 centre backs as if we didn't know that already. Sounded like a good outing against a fair side with a lot of experience.

First pre-season match for me, generally very encouraging.

Agree about Adebayo offering more in the second half, there’s definitely a decent striker in there.

A very well deserved MOM for Anderson, loads of effort and energy, the guy must have run twice as far as anyone else.
His performance was a great example of a player being let off the leash, he was popping up all over the pitch, hunting the ball down and creating plays. Very impressive.

Early doors, but if we can keep up the energy and positive style of play then at the very least we should be in for some entertaining matches in the coming season.

Title: Re: 2018 - 2019 Season Pre Season Friendlies
Post by: Batch on Saturday, July 21, 2018, 16:34:26
Thought the second half was a bit disappointing myself. We got a bit sloppy, Pompey stepped up and were more comfortably the better team.

Didn't really see much improvement in Adebeyo in terms of goal threat, Anderson reverted to type and in all we didn't threaten too often. And watching Conroy, he's a bit rusty - understandably.

Did think the midfield looked useful though. Diagouraga is presumably miles behind on fitness and didn't really show much in his 10 - I'm sure in a few weeks he'll be a different prospect.

That said it was a good test against useful higher league opposition. Enjoyed the first half and came away slightly more optimistic than I went in!

Decent display, that.
McGlashan I like, gets stuck in
Anderson looks a different player
Smith reminds me of Ray McHale
Some of Vigs distribution was top notch
Knoyle continues to improve
Thought Robertson had a good game
At times Adebayo looks disinterested - although he stepped it up 2nd half
What the hell is Alzate doing in L2? Fuck me, he’ll be immense.

Negatives - we lost nearly every header and we don’t look to have a lot of goal threat.

Couple more players plus Richards and Woolery back and we can look forward to a decent campaign.

Agree with what others have written about the game.

Overall fairly positive but we looked a bit toothless up front and struggled with set pieces at the back. I'll put the latter down to Watkins being a big, awkward bugger who looked bound to score.

Yes, beg pardon, Hawkins. I didn't know that about him being a former target. On yesterday's showing, it is a shame we didn't get him as he looked a right handful in the air and seemed to fit in well in a pragmatic Kenny Jackett side.

Not much to add on what has been said already other than we enjoyed the game. The town equipped themselves well enough as PSF go. We thought the scoreline flattered Portsmouth. Our finishing was poor but not overly concerning as we did create numerous chances. Fluid passing rather than the confused mechanical clunking of last season. Yeah, feeling positive going forward, just a few more signings and we’re good to go.

While it's true we need CBs (that will be signed) I think that's a little unfair, seems you've based that on the 150 second video.

Having been to the game I can say that Hawkins was by far the tallest man on the pitch, and will be in most games he plays, so even with better CBs we'd likely have conceded that goal anyway.  The other was an unlucky deflection in the build up for the fellow to get the ball in from the inside left area.

Obviously there are still things there that could have been better but an 18 year old academy graduate being at fault for a goal in a pre-season friendly isn't really going to be a representation of our back line, neither is the other CB in there at the time being Robertson.

We know we need players in there but to base an idea of our defence on those two and a half minutes is daft.

I do have a bit of sympathy for Brown's predicament.... he's got 2 centre back in Lancashire and Conroy who aren't fit, but may at some point come into contention. So with a limited budget, he probably doesn't want to over stretch and get in 2 replacements, but will wait and probably get in a couple of kids on loan.

Assuming Taylor is LB, then Iandolo can cover that.... but as things stand no cover for Knoyle. All a bit ramshackle and difficult to see us winning too many matches, by keeping a clean sheet. So we'll need to score a few. It's asking a lot of the kid from Fulham to spearhead the attack.

Still 2 weeks though, and given how weak we look, you'd hope something will be done about it.

I would be happier with a  better defender as backup than Iandolo, Romanski can fill in at left back and has played there for the youths.

Dunne is being trialed at right back in friendlies so if he can fill in then we won't need a back up signing.

A utility defender signing would be useful though.

I agree with the rest of your post KT but Hawkins is the same height as Robertson and Adebayo at 6 foot 3.

For me the problem was that Robertson cannot jump whereas Watkins can, so he easily beat Robertson to the crosses.

Too early to say for me, as I don't know the relative strength of the opposition.  What we do know is that even Brown in today's Adver is flagging up we're short at the back and up top, of course, this is partly down to injuries.

We also know that last season we finished 9th our lowest for 34 years, and the second lowest since Div 4 was formed in 58.

Last season when we did have a wobble, Flitcroft managed to turn it around and get that key win, like Crewe away and Notts County at home.

So as things stand we are weaker than last year, but by how much  :hmmm:   We should have a reasonable idea after 10 games.... PB had 10 games last season and got 11 points, after 10 games last season 11 points got you between 15th-18th where you could find Barnet.  Should we repeat last season's finish at the start then our FL status will be called to question.

Scored 7 in 31 games last season and they only just signed him in January for £200k, I can't see them letting him go but if they did I would love him leading our line maybe with a season long loan.

Flipflop is a big fan of his and tried to sign him in January, wouldn't be shocked if he did leave Pompey that they made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

They appear to be about to sell Conor Chaplin so will be a bit short on numbers up front if they do.

Bit of an odd looking starting line up.

TOWN STARTING XI | McCormick; Dunne, Lancashire, Conroy, Romanski; Diagouraga, McCourt, Doughty; Twine, Trialist, Young.

SUBS - Henry, Cheshire, Stanley, Pryce, Edwards.

Horndean is sort of tacked onto Havant.... when I lived down that way it used to near the A3.

It was mentioned in the Adver piece about us trying for a PL defender loanee.  It's a behind closed doors game, though.

Guessing this afto's game at Horndean is one for the 'yoot'.

No, but turning roads into motorways, sticking housing estates around them can mean old places can get a bit lost.

Always hard to judge against lower level opposition but:

-Diagouraga looked good. Defensive work horse but also plenty of skill to get out of trouble and start atacks. I see some counter attacking goals next season with Toumani breaking up play and finding McGlashan/Anderson on the wings.

-Doughty very influential in an attacking midfield role. Just hangs onto it a bit too long sometimes. Fitness looked good.

- McCourt all action, box to box type on last night's showing.

- Conroy seemed fine. As did Lancashire. Although I don't rate the latter at all.

-Fortune looked quite decent. Two footed, nice lay offs out wide, fitness looked good, can tell he looks after himself. Can see why he doesn't score that often. Did most of his good work outside the box. Definitely a good foil for linking play with attacking midfielders and wide men though. I wouldn't mind giving him a year.

-Twine could be a major impact player off the bench. Missed a pen but still scored two. Very confident lad.

Thought it was quite positive overall. Game itself was quite feisty which made for a decent spectacle.
