Absolute blizzard down here in Essex at the moment. Looking forward to this - few us heading up on the pop. Lovely city.

It’ll get abandonded at half time.

If it doesn’t, 1-1. Richards to score. 550 Town fans.

What's "the pop" out of interest?
Can't see the new goalie keeping his place after last week.

Think a draw would be a result but would settle for a win !!.       C'mon Town let's turn this around.

Pre match seat of learning in The Regal.
Place is full of inactive Soviet era sleeper cells.
Nervous agents.

First visit in 86, the coach driver proudly pulled up outside the stadium. Job done.
It was Cambridge City's ground.

Remember the glorious FA Cup win here in the early 90's.
Calderwood scored when concussed.

Also seem to recall approaching the ground across common land and having to dodge the cow pats.

So, wish Phil luck today.
He has a brief time to make some history and get us out of this black hole.
Concentrate on the cause of our principle uncertainty, the defence, and we may yet make top 7.

And it's bloody cold here.

Cambridge have only lost 1 game in the last 7 and that was away at leaders Accrington, they are good at home with just 3 defeats suffered against Newport, Wycombe and Carlisle, their last home defeat was back in December.

Their home form is DWWWLWWDWLWWLDDWWD pretty impressive stuff.

I think with our injuries and suspension of Banks I cannot see past a 2-1 defeat, Richards scoring and 425 town fans in a crowd of 4,036.

Classic result during the Beck-Hoddle footy ideology cold war.

Can see only a make-do-and-mend approach until Banks gets back, so a draw today would be good.

I'm viewing these forthcoming 10 games as a kind of pre-season for August, when the real business commences.

I'm hopeful that Brown, can have a look and make some decisions about the squad and be prepared to give it a shot in 18/19.

We need some stability, otherwise it could get very messy.

Will have a wander across Parker's Piece later, possibly where the first game of association football was played in 1863.
This will help to clear some of the dark, bad karma clouds that have been gathering over this match day thread.

Everything is going to be fine.

Not sure how Hussey and Taylor will work together unless Taylor is taking a more central role.

Nice to see Mullin given more gane time but Anderson at times is our best outlet for turning defence into attack.

Obviously an effort to keep it simple, tighten up at the back and possibly nick something from a set piece.

Anderson was absolutely dreadful last week - albeit along with others. Still can’t get the Richards/Norris combo, though.

Tough on Knoyle who hasn’t done badly at all. I’d still prefer Will Henry to either of the other 2.

Elsnik could do with a performance, too.

Anderson wasn't the worst of a bad bunch it is a bit harsh on him but he offers nothing defensively.

Very harsh on Knoyle who was one of our better performers last week and he has offered more than most when we attack.

I think I would prefer Henry to either of the other keepers too.

Richards cannot seem to play with Norris successfully and would prefer Mullin alongside Richards TBH.

Elsnik has not played well since his injury really he looks tired and off the pace, such a shame as he is such a talent when fit.

A performance indeed and some of these players may well perform today. The sudden recovery of Hussey (coincidence). In the same weeks DF has left he's been sub and now starts. Some players just on't work under some managers (I'm well aware that Hussey and DF worked together before) or they can fall out. Ever fallen out with your Manager/Employee? Even if you had a good working relationship with them prior? Same thing in football and with much more ego added, probably more difficult to resurrect. Obvious weak links in the squad today runs through the core. Moore, Robbo and Dunne. However, with Banks still out we've little choice. Probably a little harsh on Moore but I think we all know he's not FL standard. Who knows though, playing under the new manager he may take this chance, no matter how slim.

Phil Brown knows he has a task on his hands and must find a fairly quick solution. Understand trying to shore the squad up a little but It might be too soon. If he's managed to instil confidence into the keeper and the defence, then we know Richards is capable of a goal or two. Dare I say it. He is a goalscorer  ;) PB knows how to sure up a defence, so we could go and snatch it by a single goal.

0-1 (Richards)
over 2.5 Yellows (thanks to PV for the ref data)
4,500 (491 Town)
Woodwork hit twice.
Moore saves like Banks in the 90th+ for MoM

*Continually dreaming.

Has the look of a flexible 4-1-3-2 to me changing into 4-1-2-3 when attacking.

                  Moore
Purkiss Robertson Menayese Hussey
                  Dunne
 Mullin         Elsnik             Taylor
           Richards    Norris

Not a lot of width in the team though.

Luckily their number 16 couldnt connect from a corner or it would have been a clear cut chance.

Moore saves theatrically from a cross/shot.

Mullin runs the length of the pitch on the break and Norris shot deflected just wide.

That's a strong left side. Probably the strongest we could field. Things look ok and a few players upping their game for the manager. Well I guess there will be sniffs of contract talks. It is a job still, if a lucrative one but short career.

Hussey has done well whn hes been allowed to attack them, he starting making a few mistakes as the game got older, certainly defensively.

Nobody is playing badly except for probably Elsnik (by his normal performances) is our poorest performer, along with Moore, Robertson has made a few slips too but not as bad as last week.

Heavy loss today 4-1 as defence isnt up to it and have no faith in the keepers.

Great result,  just what Brown  -and the team - needed,  quite unexpected,  especially with CU's home record.  Still think Moore is a liability but maybe this win will lift his confidence.   Hopefully Norris will be back next week.

Very similar to early season away games.  Scrappy, looked good enough, just.  It's a right old shit league and we are still in the hunt.  Better from Norris early on, keeper is a real weak position for us.

Title: Re: Cambridge Untd v Swindon match day thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, March 17, 2018, 17:15:39
If we can play for each other as we did today then promotion is still well on the cards.

No bad players today, some weren't still quite at thier best level but they all worked hard for each other.

Mullin, Dunne and Mayo my MoM's Moore started poorly but got better and is IMO better than RCC.

Purkiss and Robertson very solid, totally different to last week.

Hussey put in some great runs early on in the game but tired in the 2nd, good to see him back and playing well.

Mayo made some great interceptions and still looks very raw but he was almost always between the ball and our goal.

Dunnes best game for me, he passed and harried them and seemed like he had a point to prove against the team that released him in the summer.

Elsnik is still not up to pace but grew into the game, we still miss his long range efforts as he did before he suffered from injury.

Taylor looks more comfortable at left wing than LB as he can attack players and get into better positions without leaving gaps behind him, he played fairly well.

Norris had his best game in ages, won a lot of balls, passed well and took his goal well, shame he got the injury.

Richards started very poorly and forgot his role of chasing things, but in the 2nd he came back to his best, scored a nice goal at the near post and his penalty was excellent, he still doesn't reach his performance levels of before he got the captaincy though, we miss that.

Mullin played between right wing and right striker and he was probably our best player, ran with the ball and harried them all the time, looked back to his best.

Woolery came on and held the ball up well, made dribbles and didnt waste chances, was felled softly for the penalty but thats still an assist ;) looked useful.

Gordon ran around a bit but didn't do much but wasn't on for long.

McGivern nearly gave away a penalty with his first kick in a Town shirt when it was 2-1 and that could have cost us but he grew into the game and was no worse than any other defender we have, made a couple of tackles but looks like he needs game time and the timing of his tackles leave a lot to be desired.

Good solid win, more of the same next week please.

Not really apart from we didn't hoof the ball as often up to Richards and Norris all the time, there was a bit more build up down the wings.

I think it is a massive acheivement that we already have 10 away wins in the league with 9 away games left to play.

Thats 1 more than we got in the promotion season of 68-69 and equalled the total that we had under PdC in 2011-12!

We had 12 under Macari in 85-86 in Div 4 then 11 the season after 86-87.
The highest total being under Muckman in 95-96 with 13.

Yes we have a fair few tough away games left but we could easily eclipse the current record which would be some acheivement.
We currently sit on 11 wins with 4 away games left.

Title: Re: Cambridge Untd v Swindon match day thread

Well Notts County must be crapping themselves. Someone will take advantage of that game in hand on them and to be fair it could be anyone from ourselves in joint 7th to Wycombe in 4th. This season is not over and no doubt our hearts and minds will be tested over these next 9 games. So far 1 out of 10. Win another 4/5 and we should be able to get a play-off spot. Dream big and win another 6 /7(2/3rds)... that could be enough to secure 3rd with 78pts. It really is a game at a time territory!

Notts County & Mansfield drew as did Luton, and Exeter lost 2-1. Some good results for us. Shame Wycombe, Cov and Lincoln won but that was against bottom, 20th and 22nd respectively. Let's make no excuses about today or even be modest; Cambridge have a cracking home record, whereas our away form had wavered somewhat. We didn't even play that well and got a good result here. In fact I'd say that was the result of the day in L2. Many of us had it down as a loss and we all would've taken a point even if we knew it wouldn't be enough. Did someone say "New manager bounce"

 :pint:

Indeed. Think he said it twice. Nice to hear him praise this victory as Matt Taylor's doing. Can take that comment however but Marc Richards also attributed Taylor too. The fact the players response is also praising others in the squad in fair detail too. Things look good. Much emphasis on playing players to their strengths and in the correct positions. That comment is coming out a lot now DF has gone. We said, the right tweaking and this team could go on a run.

We currently sit on 11 wins with 4 away games left.

The weird thing about this season, is that we've already scored more goals on the road than any Div 4 season, and quite possibly any season ever, certainly more than Mcmahon's season or even 68/69.

Whereas the goals against at the CG column if not quite yet in the worst ever category, but certainly the worst in Div 4, with power to add before season's end.

I saw that Harry Smith said good things about Taylor on twitter too. Whether it’s because he’s a nice guy, or has what it takes to be a coach (or both) who knows. It has crossed my mind that Brown is here until the end of the season and whatever happens, Taylor could have it next year.

I think he could make a great coach already. That's a decent theory though, maybe Brown is giving Taylor a fast track apprenticeship in Management. I know that may seem unlikely but if Brown does well he will undoubtedly have some offers on the table and will be free to choose them if he wishes (an example might be Birmingham City if they go down). So at least Taylor would be more prepared to step in again. It's mere speculation right now but it will be interesting to see how it all pans out season end and into the season break. That's where the hard work is done.

Much better today. Seemed a lot more organised and disciplined than the last few games. Best I've ever seen Dunne play for us, but to be honest they all put a shift in. Cambridge a poor side but take nothing away from a much improved performance. Still not brilliant but at least the playoffs may be in sight again. Brown already seems to have a rappore with the fans

Because even if he doesn't in truth, he give the impression that he cares about the cause and is believable in delivering that. Unlike probably our last 3 or 4 managers (DF, LW, MC). Dare I say PdC had this trait and got the fans believing again. Some may call it passion and with passion comes the other side; erratic nature and bursts of embarrassment/rage/anger. However, I think we're all due a manager with a bit of passion and isn't just hot air. I think PB is the right man to get us at least moving in the right direction again. Be interesting what our next home gate will be, if we get a result at Exeter.

I still think Phil Brown has one eye on the Sunderland job.

To get anywhere close to the job, he'll need to do well at Town during this small tenure. Demostrating rapport would be up there for PB.

Well, Morecambe at home isn’t the most enticing. Saying that, it is Good Friday but I’d be surprised if it’s more than 6500.

I vowed not to go again this season after Cheltenham, but I’ll relent. New managers need support.

Whatever happens this season, I’m glad Flitcroft has gone. We had no future under him.

As for new managers - keep an eye on Kevin Davies who has worked wonders at Southport.

I think Flitcroft, Cooper and Williams all had passion to win, just didn’t show it in a way visible to fans. Flitcroft and Cooper, it seemed, wanted to win to be able to boost their own egos and stick two fingers up at the fans. Williams always seemed a nice enough guy, but not an extrovert running up and down touchlined. Brown is probably closest in the arm waving stakes to Di Canio.

An enjoyable game in which everyone pulled their weight. Robertson, Dunne and Norris each put in their best performance in a while. Cambridge were solid but unspectacular. On balance we probably weren’t worth a half time lead, but we grew into the game and deserved the win for some disciplined and clinical play.

There were several pluses, not least proof (if it was ever needed) that the impressive Hussey and the outstanding Taylor can comfortably play together.

Cambridge had won the majority of their 18 home games and had only conceded 13 in the process. A useful early reminder that there’s plenty to play for, and that we most certainly don’t need our old chum ‘Flitters’ to help us achieve it.

I would agree with all of that although that keeper scares the life out of me. I wonder if PB can get someone out of retirement (along the lines of Mark Schwarzer perhaps). That position needs to be addressed because it will cost us if not.

Other than that though, a really good hard working performance in which every player did their bit. If I was picking the team, Mullin would be the first name on the team sheet every time. I love the way he plays, I would like to think it's how I would have played when I was younger if I was any good.

As usual here are a few posts from the Cambridge forum about yesterday.

Poor game. Swindon won it easily without having to play well.

That was properly cold. Can't recall colder. Think Swindon might win the play offs.

What a bunch of cheating, diving, time-wasting bastards Swindon were and the ref fell for it every time. They did, however, deserve to win and closed and pressed us well.

One thing i learnt today,James Dunne twice the player of Gary Sideways Deegan

Really? Thought sideways Dunne looked ordinary as he often was for us. Can see why he’s been in and out of their team.

Dunne absolutely battered Deegan in the middle of the park today.

And Matt Taylor has an absolute wand. That free kick for their 2nd was class. But it was still offside.

Credit to Swindon, they closed us down quickly with a high press which stifled the diamond. Not sure why we didn’t change it up a lot earlier as we’d clearly been out thought from the start. Phil Brown in his pre match interview told the press exactly how we would play and set up.

fully deserved win for Swindon.

Although we made it very easy for them, Swindon were better all over the pitch – solid in defence, quick to close us down and dangerous on the break. With the exception of their goalkeeper early on, they adapted to the conditions far better than we did.

Congratulations to Phil Brown, someone the board should've and most probably could've got in the door by now. Did an absolute number on Joe Dunne today, and therein lies the huge difference between them.

Though Swindon were nothing special they knew how to push out when needed unlike us as we were far too deep.

Just a quick mention for the weather. That has to have been the second coldest game I have ever been to, the coldest being Fulham away in the Cup in Jan '87. It really is amazing how many teams are branded cheating, diving bastards after winning a game.

We are no different to every other team. Wycombe may top that particular league, though.

I fully agree re: the keeper, both in terms of kicking and general positioning / body language. I wasn't at the Cheltenham game, but at first glance he looks like the ultimate sub keeper - someone who doesn't particularly want to play, and who certainly wouldn't fancy a crunch match at Wembley. Yes, if Brown could pull out a trump card there, it could make all the difference.

I actually stood next to Mullin's brother on the terrace. He was a good guy and we had a decent chat.

442 is so much better.
We look lost in the diamond.
Midfield was non existant.
Dont think anyone wanted to play today,
Very disapointed with that.
That was Derry football all over again.
What is that kick off all about?

---

Pretty triangles--180-degree spins & sideways passes--no intelligent running off the ball--no width--no shots & idiotic decision making (ping fecking ball at man's groin from 10 yards / balloon it into stratosphere).

Arse to the diamond. Arse to Derryball.

An afternoon of utter fecking arse.

-----------
What a waste of an afternoon that was. Freezing cold and like the majority of the players I wish I hadn't turned up. Half of them were not up for it and Dunne got it totally wrong with the 4 in the dreaded diamond. Maris & Brown were poor, Deegan goes sideways more than a crab and as for O'Neil the comment of the day I heard was that we should sub him for a traffic cone as it would have more impact! Waters needs dropping now as well as offers little apart from running. Dunne was also too slow to react tactically today and needs to lose the Derry habit of only dropping certain players. Ibhre should have been on for Waters at half time along with Amoo who has to start sooner rather than later. Why was Paul Lewis not given a chance after his goal last week? Surely could have offered more than Waters for the last 10-15. Much as I like Harrison Dunk he is also not a permanent answer at left back either. I would also like to see Mitov given a chance as Ford is waiting to be pensioned off and his distribution has become awful constantly putting us under pressure. Roll on the Summer if it ever comes....
----
Poor game. Swindon won it easily without having to play well.

Too many players were missing out there today. I really am struggling to see what waters brings to the game.

At one nil Uche missed a sitter. Free header about 5 yards out and it didn't make it out for a goal kick. A minute later they score a second.

Disappointing day

Best I've ever seen Dunne play for us, but to be honest they all put a shift in.

To be fair he could stick to what he does best, tackle & win the ball back and give it to someone else to be creative. Because we had three others in midfield that could do that he always had an option, unlike previous games when all he could do is pass it back to Robertson, who is probably the one other outfield player that is worse on the ball.

The daddy of cold will always be STFC v QPR in early 63.  The last time we had a proper winter.  Snow was shovelled off by fans, and piled into 4 foot banks, a veneer of snow was left to keep out the frost, then a dusting of sand was applied, lines were painted blue and Town wore basketball boots, to keep upright.

We won 5-0. I was young at the time, somehow you didn't notice the cold.... living in houses with no central heating, you got used to having ice form on the inside of the windows.

Oh AB, don't tempt me with that kind of odds! I've already got a perm of 4 relegation trebles with West Ham, Sunderland, Crewe & Orient. West Ham so unsettled the fans probably want them to go down to a) Prove some kind of point. b) Try to oust the board. Sunderland are looking likely to go. Crewe are on a downward spiral . That's my most realistic outcome. Orient look ok but teams below have GiH so if that got squeezed they'd and they lost a couple even they'd be looking at a couple points above the Conference drop zone!

A few more recent quotes from the Cambridge forum.

Quote
Swindon fans think Dunne's shite, incidentally. I'd probably take him over Deegan though, who I'm becoming more frustrated with by the game.

We were bad today, technically, tactically and physically. As at the away game, deeply unimpressed by a very mediocre, just-about-functional Swindon side. How we've lost 5-1 on aggregate to them is a very good way to sum up our season.

Swindon were nothing special but our defending was shaky throughout.

You can’t carry three passengers, especially in Midfield and that’s why we created frig all and made Swindon look a lot better than they are

Cambridge fans could probably do with remembering they've just spent 9 years in the Conference, survived having Lee Power as chairman, and only really flirted with the Stockport, York City fate briefly, despite having Jimmy Quinn and Lingy as gaffers.

Had they won they'd have been 4 points adrift of us. They had 5,000 on Sat, there was about 600 more at the CG when we played them earlier in the season.  That should tell us, there's not a whole world of difference between the clubs.

I know what you are getting at but TBF we had over 5,500 home fans at that game (they had 4,400 on Saturday) we were in a fairly poor run of home games too.

Even at their height under Beck they were only averaging between 6k and 7k fans at championship level when we were getting 10k regularly.

That still means we are getting 20% bigger crowds than them and always have been. And away we had 70% more travelling supporters.

Also their ground is pretty awful, proper old school bottom division ground with 2 slightly renovated stands and 2 ramshackle stands of dubious design.

Both teams have other league teams similar distances away and though Cambridge has a smaller population the surrounding catchment areas are similar sized, if anything Cambridge has more small/medium sized towns close without clubs (Huntingdon, Newmarket, Ely, Bury St Edmunds, Royston etc).

But its not about who was or is the biggest its about who won, and we won, home and away scoring 5 and conceding only 1 against them, they were on a great run at home with only 3 defeats prior to Saturday and their fans extremely confident pre game so much so that on their forum not 1 person did not predict a home win and all confident of them making the play offs still. Luton could only draw there 2 weeks ago where they limited Luton to 2 shots on target...we had 6.

In all a great win against a Cambridge side not low in confidence pre game, very good at home, a side who had only conceded 3 times in 1 game at home prior to Saturday once previously.

We weren't spectacular, we were workmanlike and wanted to win, got a little fortunate with the penalty but fully deserved a win and made Cambridge look very poor in the process, they offered nothing in attack and defensively they looked a shambles at times never able to cope with our crosses into the box especially from the left.

Try and appreciate the win rather than putting a negative spin on it, let us enjoy it.

Maybe we’re just very good at disrupting other team’s methods of play and our little bit of quality here and there sees us win.

Hence why we’ve been a bit of a win one, lose one side, too.

Highlights up. https://youtu.be/_TIzWcZevig

That pen was beyond soft. Woolery was just stretching for a ball he’d failed to control.

What the fuck is going on behind that goal, is it a five a side pitch or something?

Both times I saw us against Bolton last season I thought they were shite and they went up fairly comfortably. Same with Burton a few years back - they weren't really 'good' just organised and disciplined.

Both games I've seen Cambridge though they have been dreadful. Possibly the worst strikeforce I've ever seen.

Which is pretty much what we have said after a loss. Robert T is probably right about much of a muchness and small margins.

Yep. The ground has a lot of character but could do with a tidy up, so I assume they've got potential to shift the pitch towards the "new" stand behind that goal if they want to.

It's L2. Are we even right to expect 'good'?

It's amazing how some teams harness the positive impacts of winning in shit leagues.  Shows how much of the game is in the head - remember, even no league players were pretty amazing at school ages!  They then go through the next league.  I say amazing, because the drop in standard from each league is pretty big - Prem to Champ is a gulf, Champ to L1 looks obvious, L1 to L2 is bigger than I remember it, and if FGR are an example of what good looked like in the Conference, that must be god awful.

What seems to happen though is that the variation in standard within the League reduces.  So this division is full of crap with only a sprinkling of individuals worthy of better.  The teams that organise best and harness what little individual talent they have do well I guess - Luton.  Our entire campaign has been built off of the fact our Manager thought the forwards we had would do enough to win us more than we lost, which is probably a fair assumption.  We are in the top 5 for goals scored, as well as the bottom 5 or so for goals conceded.  We just didn't get the organisation bit right and the lump it without thought approach pushed us completely into gambling as we never retained possession for long enough to control a game.  We are still close though, precisely because we are built for the gamble to an extent.

Cheers, its almost as bad as the situation at Carlisle....

Keeping it simple and avoiding square pegs in round holes is important.
Based on his comments, it looks as if Phil Brown has recognised this.

Hopefully he's good at roulette.  :)

Worse than Mike Grella and his two imaginary friends in Paul Hart's "4-3-3" system?

Haha, the thing is Grella wasn't that bad a player. Many of those signings in "that season" were just not the right fit. Didn't realise Grella is only 31 so he would've only been about 22/23 at the time he played for us. Thought he was older for some reason

I'm pretty sure Grella has managed a decent career over here recently.  It's an odd league, with some players at League One standard, as shown by my local team having Chris McCann playing at left wing back this weekend, while also having players in the same team who attract interest from Europe's elite - Almiron for example, about whom Atlanta turned down an offer last year of over $10m.  He's pretty good as well!

I think that season aged us all, including the players :)

Grella was 24 when he signed on loan for us, I thought over all he wasn't a bad player just not in that system. Hes gone on to be pretty good at New York Red Bulls TBF and still going strong.

Carthorse Clavin Andrew is still only 31 as well, how the fuck he is still playing is beyond me, one of the worst striker I have seen at Swindon.

Quite. Calvin bloomin Andrew! Was just interesting to see Grella is only 31 and we have 35/36 year old Marc Richards banging them in (or even heading them in).

Richards has 9 goals in 11 games for us, one of the signings of the season for me, along with Preston, Elsnik (loan obviously) and Taylor.

Wish we had got him in sooner is all really.

But for his sending off, I'd add Banks to that list too. Back for Exeter?

Operation for ACL + op for a busted shoulder.  A lot to contend with...

Didn’t know about his shoulder.

Just that we have a development game against ‘Num tomorrow and they have a player having first game back after doing his ACL end of August.

The last update was about a month ago when he'd started running again. I guess with these things, best to take it slowly, and be ready for pre-season training if no set backs.

Chelsea away in one of the cup competitions, we lost 1-0. 500 of us on a bank for 9,000. About - 2c
Agreed. Absolutely freezing on that vast open terrace.
