Anyway, Exeter are 0-0 with Crewe
Notts County 1-0 down to Cambridge.

Only half time though...

Talking of Notts County, I see they are giving a "ahem, with little irony" trial to Nile Ranger.

Cam Utd 6 on target, 6 off target

Notts County 1 off target

I know it’s not in our league, but it’s great to see Birmingham getting stuffed 5-0 at Brentford.

I expect Cotterill will come out with a deranged look in his eyes and argue that his lads deserved a win.

Oh I'll shut up. Exeter you cunts. Crewe score 88mins, 1-0. Exeter equalise 90+2, 1-1. Exeter score winner 90+4, 1-2. Irrelevant-ish as they couldn't catch us tonight. Bunch of fuckers though!

If I had to pick one of the two to lose it was obviously Notts Co, shame about the two added time goals at Crewe, but relatively happier with tonights results than expected.

Yeah, Notts are dropping alright.

Mansfield v Coventry Saturday. Cov could be right with us if they win their 2 in hand.

None of this is really making a difference to our outside auto chances - nothings changed. Would be nice to have a bit of playoff breathing space though.

Yeah I did make a note of this a little while ago, as Accrington and Creepies form took an upward trend. Without being harsh to Chesterfield, we've got to go and smash them off the park this weekend and show some real intent and add to our goal difference. A win will do mind :)

True, but there kind of is in a way. If we assume Exeter overtake us (GIH), Lincoln have a GIH but are 4pts away so they can't catch us. In effect the bare minimum of POs is in our own hands/ours to fuck up.

Yeah, to be honest I think we’re past the stage of worrying about GD. Mind you, we’ve stuffed a few teams away (Luton, Vale, Crewe etc)

We’ve scored 44 away goals in all comps. 21 games.

I really do think they’ll go down with Barnet. Their mentality is shocking, we’ve seen it first hand twice.

In a big game, under pressure, they wouldn’t have a prayer IMO.

The good news is Notts are fading fast. And I think Exeter will make top 7 without doubt anyway. Notts need to watch out.

Crawley have been my PO ones to watch since just after christmas/new year. There form was similar to ours in that they'd gone on a mirrored run with only the odd loss. At the same time Accrington also continued a run. Crawley to crreeeep in at 7th, with momentum. So a dangerous PO proposition. Nott's will slide, but I think they can arrest a fall from the PO Zine so my ones to miss out will be Lincoln by just a point or two (contrastly there fans will be thinking "If only we beat Swindon" and Coventry who, while are good value will seemingly have more huff and not enough puff (oo-er  :gay: ) Top three, my heart says we can still sneak it but head still says 4th, even if the mathematics are there on the final day and we trounce Accy (heart again). I imagine a scenario of Final day being Luton (P), Wycombe, Accy, Mansfield, Swindon. 2pts behind Accy and Mansfield. We batter accy to get 3rd, only for Mansfield to Draw with Crawley in 90+7 (Who interestingly will only need a point to secure 7th), with a controversial "allowing Stags to score" and seeing them clinch 3rd place on GD, nd us left to face the controversial creepies in the first set of POs. Accrington v Notts County in the other (actually that wouldn't be too bad).

Of course this is all a load of bollocks and is a nightmare scenario played out in my head when trying to sleep. You Reds!  :pint:

FT Wycombe 0 - 1 Coventry

Wycombe seem in a slight blip at the moment so the top 9 get squeezed again. Wycombe stay on 62pts in 3rd. Coventry move one place, up to 8th on 54pts. 3pts behind Town with a GIH It seems more as it comes down to the crunch that no one, other than Accrington seem to want to be promoted.

Think it would have been a good result if we didn't have the personnel crisis... but we have, so I'm not sure what any of the others do will matter much.  All we can do is try and cobble together a side, and then it's a wing and prayer job.

Both now ft results.

Can’t decide which result is ideal tonight - Mansfield v Lincoln

Mansfield to win to keep Lincoln at bay from our play off spot or Lincoln to win if we still harbour any ambition of automatic.

On that basis - a draw.

Heart says I hope Mansfield get smashed.
Head says draw.
I don't think a Lincoln win is a disaster either. I want to cling on to my unrealistic hope we somehow come out world beaters under Taylor, snatching a last game auto spot.

There's not many points in it, and plenty to play for.

I reckon 'a bit better than Flitcroft' might be enough to sneak us into 3rd.

Totally agree. My prediction was a close run 4th place finish by just a point or even the dreaded goal difference. Our final game of the season v Exactly is going to be a key one for 3 or 4 clubs (ourselves and Accy included) come season end. Would love us to just sneak third and now, to the detriment of Mansfield.

Just mentioned it on another thread. Around Christmas new year I mentioned they were the form team, next to us, closely followed by Crawley. At the time, I made conscious effort to mention that the winner of our postponed tie would probably be the team that kick on for automatic. As already mentioned, I think they're still thirsty for milk but even more hungry for the title. Interesting weeks ahead!

I reckon you make this shit up... Accy's form going into the New Year was terrible something like 1 win in 7 or 8, and 4 wins from mid October to Jan 6th and losing in the FA Cup to Guiseley, bottom of the Conference.    Since then they've been on stellar form 9 wins and a draw from 11.

A pretty good night for us.

Lincoln know how to grind out a late point, but 2 wins in 10 since the turn of the year suggests that they’ve burned out a bit. They’ll have to start winning again pretty swiftly to stand a chance.

What else is behind us? Coventry are the obvious threat but they’re a funny bunch, they’ve barely scored a goal a game, and have poor form. Their game in hand is next Tuesday versus Luton. A big game for us.

Carlisle may have won their last 4, but they’re all bottom 8 sides. Let’s see what they do at Exeter on Saturday for starters, because they’ve still got plenty of ground to make up.

Credit to Accrington, but there’s not too much happening above us. Notts might be 3rd, but 1 away win in 13 points to some issues that they might struggle with in the playoffs.

Flitcroft will never take Mansfield straight up, and playing them in the playoffs would be delicious.

What has October (and November) got to do with around New Year? League Form Reg...League form...Talk about trying to spin it. Reminds me of political parties. Who's your Chief Whip?

 We were meant to play Accrington on their patch 8th/9th December. Yes pre Christmas was the ideal time to play them, after Christmas and the New Year (I did state around Christmas/New Year) they picked it up a gear . As the rearranged tie crept closer I kept mentioning the importance of that tie (feel free to check back from the relatable post match threads). All the while the Accy form was ticking along pretty well;

26th Dec  L  3-1 v Carlisle
30th Dec  W 0-3 v Grimsby
6th   Jan  W 4-0 v Chesterfield
13th Jan  W 2-0 v Cheltenham
20th Jan  W 3-2 v Port Vale
27th Jan  L  2-1 v Crawley Town
3rd   Feb  W 3-2 v Stevenage
6th   Feb  W 2-1 v STFC
10th Feb  W 2-0 v Coventry
13th Feb  W 1-0 v Crewe
17th Feb  D 1-1 v Barnet
24th Feb  W 1-0 v Cambridge
6th   Mar  W 1-0 v Morecambe

I would say winning 4 out of 6 AROUND (not going into) the New Year is pretty decent form and includes a loss end of Dec and end of Jan. They are the only two losses they've had since, on 26th Dec (you know, around Christmas/New Year) and 27th Jan. 4 League wins in between. Were it not for a draw v Barnet they've won every League match since or unbeaten in 7 on the spin. I'm not making any shit up.

What has October (and November) got to do with around New Year? League Form Reg...League form...Talk about trying to spin it. Reminds me of political parties. Who's your Chief Whip?

 We were meant to play Accrington on their patch 8th/9th December. Yes pre Christmas was the ideal time to play them, after Christmas and the New Year (I did state around Christmas/New Year) they picked it up a gear . As the rearranged tie crept closer I kept mentioning the importance of that tie (feel free to check back from the relatable post match threads). All the while the Accy form was ticking along pretty well;

26th Dec  L  3-1 v Carlisle
30th Dec  W 0-3 v Grimsby
6th   Jan  W 4-0 v Chesterfield
13th Jan  W 2-0 v Cheltenham
20th Jan  W 3-2 v Port Vale
27th Jan  L  2-1 v Crawley Town
3rd   Feb  W 3-2 v Stevenage
6th   Feb  W 2-1 v STFC
10th Feb  W 2-0 v Coventry
13th Feb  W 1-0 v Crewe
17th Feb  D 1-1 v Barnet
24th Feb  W 1-0 v Cambridge

Around Christmas/New Year, Accy were 10th Crawley 16th... maybe you did say it, but it would have required clairvoyancy skills, beyond most mortals.

OK I think we have it, on the 13th Jan you mention that Accy are on the back of 3 wins in a row like Crawley...therefore in form.  See, I take around Christmas/New Year to mean the Festive period

Had we played Accy on the Sat when they were out of form like us at the time...well we'll never know.  But I reckon they got a bit of luck with that...hopefully we got ours with Yeovil being off.

Lincoln know how to grind out a late point, but 2 wins in 10 since the turn of the year suggests that they’ve burned out a bit. They’ll have to start winning again pretty swiftly to stand a chance.

I think Lincoln may have lost a few players in the window... lads on loan going back. Certainly Oxford got one who had been with the Imps for the first part of the season.

I went to Fulham v Sheffield United last night and this won't be a shock to anyone on here but the standard of football was absolutely brilliant. Fulham were class from minute 15-90. They play a brand of Luke Williams football but are absolutely devastating on the counter and in Mitrovic have a decent striker with an eye for goal. It wouldn't surprise me if Fulham are in the Premiership next season.

Not bad results for us in the league last night either. Time for us to go on our run of form and steal the 3rd automatic spot!

On loan.... been at Newcastle a couple of years and Rafa probably doesn't think he's good enough.

Maybe will need a new club in the summer so putting in the effort now...

I’m no Rafa but given their other poor options are Dwight Gayle and that Joselu fella I find it odd he didn’t get a run. There’s a fella up there we know well who could feed him all day long with quality delivery into the box

The Serbian Shearer is I fear in that no mans land of being bloody good for the Championship but not quite good enough for the Premier League, plus I suspect that the reason Rafa doesn't like him is that he likes dependable players, not bat crap crazy lunatics with flailing elbows like Mitro!

Is he any better/worse than what they have, probably not, however they are a damn sight less likely to be sent off for elbowing someone or leaving the foot in and when you are in Newcastle's position with much of a muchness strikers ending the game with 11 becomes more of a consideration!

13th Jan.   My contention... that isn't Christmas/NewYear.  For me that would have been the busy schedule when we had Crewe 23rd Dec, Luton 26th Notts 30th Barnet 1st.  Accy had 3 matches, won 1 lost 2.

Not a game thing but a signing, I see Coventry have signed Carl Baker until the end of the season after he left ATK in India.

A bit injury prone but a good quality signing for the Sky Blues even if he is 35.

At this stage of the season it is quantity of fit personnel for the run in to the play offs that is needed, not saying we should have gone for him but hes a solid pro and the type of experienced player we could do with for our run in. A good signing by them.

Interestingly, Coventry vs Lincoln, which got frozen off along with everything else 10 days ago, has been rearranged for April 24th. With only 2 more games to follow it.

That rule about playing things ASAP is clearly never enforced.

Well they have Troy Brown, Troy Archibald-Henville, Jordan Moore-Taylor all injured, James McAlinden played his first game in a few weeks yesterday too. Ryan Harley picked up a knock too late on.

Apparently they played very defensively and not very well yesterday and Port Vale deserve at least a draw, Exeter were uninspiring according to PV and a few of their own fans.

MoM was Chris Pym the Exeter keeper.

Also Exeter fans seem to hate PB and have a bit of history with him when he was at Saarfend, calling him the clapping seal.

Here are some comments from Exeter fans about last night...most of which sounds pretty good from our perspective.

Quote
Not convinced, but hey ho, three points is all that matters, but on current form I'd be surprised if we got anything from the Swindon and Lincoln games.

We weren't very good second half, didn't hold the ball at all, just gave it straight back to them all the time. Luckily our opposition plumbed new depths of League Two mediocrity.

Good result but it still sounds like our midfield cant hold onto the ball.

Big win....Important not to lose to Swindon now

If we play on Saturday with the ball like we did second half tonight, we will lose. If we play like we did at Swindon, we have a chance.

Well, we weren't brilliant, but good enough.

Main worry is that we created very little; but I think we defended well against what was, admittedly a p**s poor team. When we consider that we are missing much of our first choice defense, it wasn't that bad. Pym made a couple of quality saves, and yes, they had a tendency to screw up every opportunity, but the whole team - esp Macca, Jay and Taylor - worked hard at the back. It is also the least nervous I have felt in the last minutes for a long time.

Great to get three points but God knows how. What a pile of .......... (insert expletive here)

The one negative, if it can be called that seeing as we won, is we have scored twice just once in the last nine games.

Don't think we are playing well enough, but two big games now. A chance to build a safety gap to eighth place , or at least preserve what we have with a couple of draws.

Well done City but don't think we will be good enough to get promotion this term. All these scrappy results and the inability to score more than one goal a game will take its toll. Goodness knows how we are still in the running , beats me.

Pym was clear man of the match

Great result but we need to find more goals from somewhere

IMHO Vale looked the better side all over the pitch, they'll probably wonder how they didnt get something with all their approach work, corners, and goal attempts. Citys defense, in no small part due to Pym was outstanding, so the teams kinda balanced up. They did present the ball back to Vale far too often, but thats too bad.

ot sure if it is down to what is practiced at the Cat and Fiddle, but this tactic of aimless clearances and hoofing just loses us possession far too much. A decent team will break us down as has been seen too many times this season. Great to grind out a result tonight but the passing was beyond abysmal, we just cannot seem to keep possession, or maybe tactically we don't care anymore. Thought Pym played well and defence in general (hoofing aside) also looked okay. The 2 guys up front can work their socks off all day long but the goals are not going to come with the current tactics.

I think this result is just a temporary reprieve and we'll be found out before too many weeks.
Wonder what on earth Tisdale is up to with these tactics , perhaps he just doesn't care anymore?

Didn't see anything this evening to suggest we're promotion material, we're okay but that's all. Pym was my MoM by a country mile and Storey played really well too. Vale could have scored six but we got away with it and I hope some of the early season confidence returns with this hard fought win.

City were very poor last night, PV could of hammered city had it not been for the quality of pym again.
Almost every effort on goal was from PV.

Wycombe- 9 Points Ahead Played 1 More

Port Vale (h) 20th
Notts County (a) 4th
Grimsby (h) 22nd
Yeovil (a) 17th
Lincoln (a) 8th
Accrington (h) 1st
Chesterfield (a) 23rd
Stevenage (h) 16th

Apart from Yeovil and Stevenage, the other 6 fixtures ATM are all sides that desperately need the points for title/promotion/stay up

Swindon

Exeter (a) 6th
Morecombe (h) 18th
Crawley (a) 12th
Carlisle (h) 10th
Yeovil (a) 17th
Newport (h) 11th
Grimsby (a) 22nd
Colchester (h) 13th
Accrington (h) 1st

This saturday is a massive game. After Exeter there is a big chunk of games against teams "with nothing to play for" which will ultimately decide our season. Hopefully Phil Brown can start to get some clean sheets in and get some momentum.

Even if we win our game in hand Wycombe are effectively 7 points ahead given GD.

We'd need a mega run of the likes we've not seen this season to even be in the hunt.  7 points better over 8 games. Just can't see it.

If only we could get on run that combines our periods of good away and home form.

"On paper" us and Luton have the slightly easier run in, but as is said all the time football is not played "On paper".

If we could win every game between now and the end of the season then we go up, simple.

I think Luton and Accrington will be the top 2 with Accringtons great run of late and Luton tailing off then it would appear to be Accringtons to lose but it could still go either way.

3rd is still up for grabs with any team down to us in 9th place still in with a great chance of taking 3rd spot.

Recent form followed by number of point from the last 15 available.

Accrington  DWWWW - 13
Luton         DDLDD - 4
Wycombe    LLDWW - 7
Notts Co     LWDWD - 8
Mansfield    WDDDD - 7
Exeter C     WDDLW - 8
Coventry C DWWDW - 11
Lincoln C    LLDWW - 7
Swindon     LWLLW - 6

Looking at that then Coventry are the ones hitting a bit of form the rest is wide open.

All games are difficult at this time of the season.  Like Exeter in mid week, they may have been crap but got the job done, that's all that matters.

Indeed, every game is big for those at the top and bottom of the table.

At least we have played all the bottom 6 clubs fighting against relegation home and away already with the exception of Grimsby at home.

Its going to be whoever has a run of form now and then usually its whoever goes into the play offs on the strongest run that succeeds.

9 games to go and Town aren't even in the play-off places. We're not even one place of the POs and we've got a crap goal difference. Finishing in the top 7 will be an achievement.

You've gotta be trolling? One point off 7th and a game in hand over 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Exeter in 6th have a similarly poor GD. They had 3 GiH on us at one point and only sit 3 points ahead. In one game beat them by 2 goals and we'll be level on points and GD with them. It ain't over 'til it's over and that applies massively in this league, this season. We could easily go on to win our game in hand and be 3 points from automatic. I'm sure nearly every team from ourselves up to Wycombe are saying similar things. It could easily flounder and we end up 14th or something silly but wouldn't it be great to go into the Accy game knowing their title hopes have been settled and we need a point to capture third spot?

I imagine 3 or 4 teams all challenging for that final spot on the season decider. Sky should be creaming their pants off at this prospect, much more dramatic than the Premier league. Ok, the football is shit but there is a lot riding on this season. Enjoy the ride, as ever!

It would be.  Saturday is a very hard game... the last time we went there in the league, more or less 7 years ago, we lost 1-0. How could this be I hear you say as the Grecians fielded a team containing TAH, James Dunne, Ryan Harley and Jamie Cureton.... whereas we could put out Caddis, Douglas, Prutton and Ritchie  :hmmm:

I can see the attraction of a 'shades of Walsall' non-game in front of a big crowd, but imagine instead a game where we were in 3rd and 4th place respectively where the winner gets auto and the loser could drop right out of the play-offs?  Big potential heartbreak but the chance of a great day out that we can drone on about for years.  :)

Tomorrow’s fixtures, just in case you’re interested.

Luton v Barnet
Wycombe v Port Vale
Chesterfield v Notts C. (Sunday & a bitter local derby)
FGR v Mansfield
Coventry v Grimsby
Carlisle v Cambridge
Crawley v Cheltenham
Morcambe v Lincoln
Accrington Stanley have no fixture tomorrow or Sunday.

Interestingly Accrington will have a massive impact on who goes up and the play offs. They have to play the following....

Mansfield A
Notts Co. H
Exeter H
Wycombe A
Lincoln H
Swindon A
Plus three other fixtures not involving current runners and riders.

Boils down to us. Win 7 or 8 of the remaining games and we go up automatically. Lots of 6 pointers between now and season’s end, so teams will all be dropping points.

I think tomorrow will be the turning point. A win there and we can dream of 3rd. But even a draw will put us on the back foot.

We need to put the WIN in Swindon!

Yep its entirely down to us, if we win every game then we go up, if we win 75% we will certainly get into the play offs at least, as Audrey says lots of 6 pointers for all the teams above us team will drop points.

Tomorrow is a massive game, a real 6 pointer for us, I see Linganzi is fit to play and Norris rated slightly better than 50/50.

Not trolling at all. I'm ever the pessimist.

Look at today's fixtures. Our PO rivals have some very winnable games. If we lose at Exeter there could be a lot of catching up to do. Not saying we're out of it but to get a PO spot will take some effort. If we get in the POs it should be on the back of good form, which would be very positive for the PO semis.

Exeter and Cov the big gainers in the promotion hunt.

Wycombe and Lincoln both draw

Town and Stags both lose.

Still plenty to play for but we're making it more difficult for ourselves. Coventry looking like the form team in the play-off spots, they may well be the team to sneak 3rd. Mansfield had Pearce sent off and Agent DF seems to have had a cracking start up there; I make that 4 games, 3 draws and 1 loss. They seriously are on track to drop out of the play offs. Trouble is, we could easily do the same. No new manager bounce for them. Frustrating for us today as a cheap penalty (karma from last week maybe?) has cost us. Only ourselves to blame really though. Exeter behaved like a Labrador pup for the last 20mins and still managed to bad another goal.

Good Friday is a favourable set of fixtures with 4 teams in the play off hunt playing each other. We really need to win that or slight auto's will be over ad concerns will mount for missing out on play offs. GF will be PTP's biggest test for us. Time to knuckle down and see which players are really up for the fight.

It certainly will be funny (in retrospect) if both ourselves and Mansfield don't make PO's. More so for Mansfield and for the Egg on face that DF would have to take. Would make next season interesting. Let's see how this one pans out but I understand if the faith is slipping :)

Fair enough, I stand corrected.

I wonder how many supporters of clubs like Swindon would have swapped 47 48 years of bumbling around the lower leagues with the regular near misses and actual promotions & relegations for all Coventry's years in the top flight, apparently much more illustrious and high profile but probably in the end frustrating and even tedious.  Not me.

From our early glory days of the Southern League, before the Great War, up until the mid 60's Cov were a regular opponent, apart from the odd season. Pretty much 50/50 in the wins stakes.  It was then that Jimmy Hill got them up, whereas we went back down from the old Div 2, not to see each other again in a league fixture for 30  years until the Prem.

So their older fans knew all about being down in the lower reaches.

That they managed to survive as long as they did was something of a miracle as they were never really much more than a Div 3 club.... look back  on some of the sides who consistently managed to scrape out of relegation and they had some proper mediocre squads.

Had Jimmy's stewardship not happened, it's likely that Cov would be up there with our most played opponents.... the worry for us, is that the top dozen or so of these, have all to some extent left us behind.  In some cases quite a long way behind.

The only one in Div 4 is Exeter, who weigh in about 14th in the list, and currently we're below them.

This doesn't thrill me...

How a team play together as a unit can be more than its individual parts as we were under Macari.

KJ was the only player in the Accrington team that impressed me when we played them up there, looks to have good feet and can take a half chance, plays a lot like Ajose but with more pace.

He did show some promise when he scored 6 in 10 for Supermarine while on loan but was never given a chance by Cooper who thought he was too lightweight, he went on to score a fair few in the lower leagues but then given a chance by Wxm and Grimsby he never really took his chance and was played out wide by Wxm and Grimsby rather than through the middle.

Was surprised that Barnsley took the gamble on him when they did but hes finally being played in his right position and doing well with 15 goals this term but he does link up well with Billy Kee.

Well done Accrington, such a small budget and fan base to do what they have done is some achievement after a near miss 2 years ago.

Why are we sad about Chesterfield? Have I missed something

A number of reasons.  Always found Chesterfield fans a decent bunch... the famous game back in the 80's summed it up. Match postponed on Friday night at Saltergate because of floodlight failure, it was rapidly re arranged for the Saturday afternoon and those Town fans who lurked around were put up by Chesterfield fans.

I guess the sort of thing you'd expect from a town that could elect Tony Benn as MP.

Further Ernie Moss, was an opposition player I always enjoyed watching, and it's very sad to hear of his illness, perhaps a heading balls thing.  Ernie recently had a road named after him, leading up to the new ground. Here's what Ernie said about the game....

"For me competing was all about the pride and dignity of honest endeavour, - and winning wasn't all about riches and rewards, it was about preserving ones sporting integrity, it was about honour"

Proper old skool working class values...

I've a sliding scale when it comes to opposition clubs....  There are those that I have no time for, and there are a lot of those.  Others, who I'm not too bothered about either way and a few I generally wish well.

To give some idea of context.... Mansfield, when they went to the Conference, not bothered about it, this despite their fans  bricking the Rimes coach in 68, and the trouble in 85/86 with Thatcher's paramilitaries.  I guess that they have a Tory MP who believes in sterilisation for the under classes comes as no surprise.

I have to say, the only other football teams I have a vested interest in are Southampton & Eastleigh (both local to me).

If they fall on hard times or go through the mire, I feel for them. A bit like Saints this season, don't get me wrong they have themselves to blame for being so wank.

Anyone outside of Swindon, Southampton and Eastleigh, I couldn't give any less of a fuck about.

Disappointing, but then when you have a lot of football fans there is always going to be a few twats.

What was more disappointing for me was I had my teenage autistic step daughter with me having her first visit to Wembley and it upset her a lot.

We sure got abuse from 'Wall after the game.  Tbf PDC did rather up the abuse levels we suffered in the Johnsons season.  Very sorry for your stepdaughter, mind.

Separately I was a little incredulous that 4 scots were being charged criminally for abusing Eddie Jones in a 2nd class carriage on the way back from Scotland after the Calcutta Cup game.

How often have we all been abused on a second class carriage returning from an away game without such consequence?

Accrington could be champions by the time they visit.
If our lot do the guard of honour thing, then hopefully that might act as a bit of motivation for next season (for those that will still be here).

Didn't Port Vale get promoted the season after we were champions?
Straws to clutch I know.
No straw too desperate to clutch :)

Having been born and bred there and sick of the gloating from their fans ,(almost) every time we play them, I can only hope so too

Same here. Really would like Eastleigh to get promoted. However hate Saints with a passion and am hoping they get relegated and stay down.

I remember going to St Mary’s when we won 1-0 with Austin scoring. I went mental when we scored.

OK not in our league, but Gary Woddock's Aldershot missed 2 chances to go through to the next it's a knockout conference playoff round - Robert missing one of them.

The keeper then hit the post  in sudden death to allow Ebsfleet to go through to meet Tranmere on Saturday.

More importantly, Chesterfield beat Newport on Tuesday night thus wasting their game in hand, and failing to leapfrog us.

Finishing below them won't look very good given they're only just hanging onto league status, due to off field problems.

If anyone ever wonders why you watch the Town, especially in recent years, those two Tranmere games and the Leicester final all within a couple of weeks of each other shows them why.  Clearly the Sunderland game at Wembley was a much better performance, but the drama in those games in 1993 is hard to forget.

And if that wasn't enough, you had this - probably the most electric atmosphere I've ever experienced at the CG for a non-play off game. In fact it did have the feel of a play off semi-final. Magnificent...

and this was just surreal...

All this and much, much more. Well that's why I keep coming back season after season, how those who are too young to remember manage to do it, I don't know. Fair play to them though and thank God they do...

Younger age groups have the moments where Town won battles but lost wars. Nothing close to the early 90's stuff but enough to keep the hope alive.

2003/04
2009/10
2012/13
2014/15

Di Canio season helped quite a lot too.

I maintain that I don't follow Swindon for any kind of success or glory, although it's ruddy great when it does happen. I support Swindon... because I do! Passed down to me and that's that.

Success is not a must.

Absolutely not!

Imagine what TEF would be like if Swindon Town suddenly enjoyed a period of success resulting in a prolonged Premier League stay!?

We'd have to reluctantly up the 25% Football and the 80% Bollocks.

I think I enjoyed those seasons in Championship (as it is now) with Macari, Ardilles & Hoddle, more than the Premier League season. I guess it helped that we actually looked liked winning games, but being competitive at that level was success in itself compared to most of the years preceding it.

Agreed.

My generation were too young to appreciate the second tier comfort of the late 80's.

Town left the second tier just as I was leaving school and those couple of seasons seemed bleaker than any of the third tier mediocrity that followed.

This season had we managed to say held on at Lincoln and seen out draws in 4 or 5 key games, it could have been different.

Where is the irony?  Had we got enough points to make it to the play offs, won it via some exciting games, it may have felt a lot different at the close of this season, but it didn't.  We were also playing the likes of Forest Green Rovers and not on the cusp of the top league.

Other way round for me... however the waters are muddied. The last I read was that Cov were moving out of the Ricoh again, to a rugby league stadium, upgraded for lower league football.

Exeter getting a redevelopment, so that we would get more than this season's pitiful away allocation.

Coventry v Exeter today at Wembley, looks like it will be almost double the attendance of yesterdays Rotherham v Shrewbury which was a little over 26k with Exeter having sold over 11k and Coventry 37k.

Good luck to them both but for me I would rather keep Exeter down for selfish reasons, so I have another local game next season to go to.

On the pitch there is little betweeen the sides for me so I think it will be close unless one sides keeper decided to model himself on Loris Karius or there is a sending off.

On a similar note....

28 years ago today we took 35k to Wembley for the game with Sunderland, what a day that was!

Well done to Cov.  The 2 clubs reckoned to be the basket weaver's basket cases Blackpool and Cov have now won the last 2 Div 4 PO's, which gives us some hope.

Cov's presence leaves 2 eligible clubs who've never qualified for the FL PO's in the 31 years.

One is FGR, which with only one season is understandable, the other is not a whole lot further from the CG, but isn't Cheltnum.

Congrats to Coventry, deserved win today against a mostly poor Exeter in what could be Tisdales last game in charge IMO, it was Perrymans last game as Director of Football before he retires.

Good turn out of just over 50k there almost double the L1 play off attendance yesterday.

Tisdale was asked what he does now?  His reply, "drive down the M4, stop off in Wiltshire to go home"  :hmmm:

I know he still lives just outside of Chippenham, heavily linked to the MKD job apparently.

Managing appointing a brand new manager who was already living in North Wilts!? Insane.

Suppose Holloway was the last potential when he was based in Yatton Keynell.
