Title: iFollow EFL Streaming Service
Post by: supersam on Friday, February 16, 2018, 00:32:21
Just curious if any other town fans bought the annual pass for the iFollow service this season. If so what were your experiences and thoughts on service. Did you mind the fact that you can’t have commentary and video together? What about no score / minutes shown? Did you think it was good value? Ultimately... Do you think you will renew for next season???

It's ok to good.

Streaming Quality can be a bit patchy at times and it seems to vary depending on browser being used but with no pattern from game to game.

I quite like not having a commentary.

Oddly, you do miss having the score and replays though.

It's been annoying being able to see every game, not sure that is iFollows fault though!

I'm reluctant to pay them a penny more, although I'd have little choice if there's a game I don't want to miss. I'd be fuming if I paid for a season pass. I was reluctant to do so because of their shoddy past, and feel very vindicated in my decision.

Pretty much this.

The quality at the CG is usually excellent, the games at away grounds is quite frankly rubbish at times, they zoom in to just the player with the ball and then he shoots and they pan the camera to see the net bulging after the goal, some camera men must be drunk or on drugs as anybody with half a brain and 2 eyes can see that we need to see a larger share of the pitch.

I miss not seeing things off the ball, I miss the scoreline, I do not miss the commentary at all, I, like Rob miss a replay! but thats only because it feels like watching Sky TV.

The way they don't show some games is pathetic, contractual rights etc etc, the way they don't turn the games on at times until 1 minute before KO, they way the games often stop mid flow and then carry on can be frustrating.

But for me the benefits of living many many miles away and still watching games makes up for that, even if the games are shit to watch.

at least the Ifollow timeline marks the key action like goals and cards. gives you opportunity to go back at half time and replay them yourself. or just wait for it to appear on Twitter :)

I get not having the commentary is not a problem in some respects. not like you listen to it when at a game. But it would be nice to have the option. I guess they can't be arsed with the overhead to synch it with video, but I don't get the point of not allowing a user two streams (video and audio) and allowing a user to do it themselves if they wish.

not sure why two browsers doesn't work for me... well I've got a couple of ideas but no solution to them..

Just watching works just fine

Ah sorry, it used to work until the EFL Trophy freebie with FGR since then I have not been able to listen, it was a pain in the arse matching commentary to video anyway, I don't miss the commentary at all.

Like most of you have said, I think it's an OK service, it's offering something ex-pats have never had before so I was excited at the start of the season.
Once they dropped the choice of being able to have commentary and video in 2 tabs it reduced the value for me, not that I did that every game. What annoyed me is that I emailed their support just to find out the reasoning behind it (as I couldn't really understand what issue they were trying to solve, other than maybe slightly more bandwidth being used) and I got a near enough response of "that's how it's designed to work, use it or lose it".
Added to the fact in the US, you can stream premiership football with commentary, replays, score for $49 a year it makes $140 seem very steep for one team in L2 for just some shaky video only. As I write this, my stream for the game has crashed!  >:(
Obviously different markets but I'm expecting the price to go up next year and because they're the only game in town, I'm probably going to have to renew, reluctantly.....  /end of rant

Thanks for the feedback! I'm calling in to their support management team this week to see what if I can find out what their plans are for future seasons and to bitch about their support so it's good to have some other subscriber's views!

It's odd that some people can't do this. I watched the Wycombe game and listened to audio as well. The way I did it was to watch using Chrome and listen to the audio using Firefox. Maybe I was just lucky but it worked for me. I think the reason it doesn't work for others is that you are opening 2 tabs in the same browser.....?

The only problem with listening to the audio at the same time is that it lags a few seconds behind....which I got around by pausing the video until it caught up.

Title: iFollow EFL Streaming Service
Post by: Batch on Sunday, February 18, 2018, 15:55:15
no Bob, tried one in chrome for video, one in Firefox for audio. worked for about a minute then ,' too many streams' or whatever...

wondered if it was due to my method ;) would be interested to hear of ex-pats hitting the same issue with two browsers..

even so, only an idiot would design it that way in the first place. Though I think there may be something in doing it to reduce the bandwidth/server load, can't imagine an audio stream bring that demanding though..

They do it to stop 2 simultaneous logins, they are limiting now to just a single login per account(it used to be 4) and they can't differentiate between audio stream and video stream logins they treat them as 2 logins.

They told me it was never designed to be able to play audio and video simultaneously.

Some clubs provide commentary (e.g. Pompey), but they have to do it at their own cost which probably means that Swindon commentary will never be added.

Have people found that the quality of the stream is better in a certain browser?

Title: Re: iFollow EFL Streaming Service
Post by: Batch on Monday, February 19, 2018, 14:21:04
I get that, that's sensible.

I don't get them actively stopping a second tab independently playing the radio comms. There must be ways to stop more than N logins.

Following iFollow’s successful introduction in 2017/18 for supporters based overseas, enhancements are being introduced to the live streaming platform ahead of the start of the new campaign at no extra cost to viewers.

Improved production values are being implemented across the online broadcasting service, providing Clubs with the scope to introduce bespoke commentary as well as on-screen graphics. Some midweek Championship matches will also benefit from a four camera setup while additional enhancements to iFollow include more in-game statistics via the app, mobile/desktop websites and an improved match centre.

Prices for the platform have been frozen at £110 for the season for overseas viewers, and International Season Pass subscriptions are on sale as of today. Supporters can find out details on how to subscribe by visiting your Club’s website.

In a second development, and in what is a first for English football, some Sky Bet EFL matches will also be made available to watch to supporters within the UK and Ireland throughout the 2018/19 season via iFollow

This development has been made possible due to the new broadcast agreement with Sky which was agreed last year, whereby EFL Clubs have been granted the rights to stream games to a domestic audience, in addition to their followers overseas which has been available since the start of 2017/18.

EFL Clubs will be able to live-stream in the UK and Ireland any league match via their respective iFollow (or equivalent) service that takes place outside the blocked hours of 14.45-17.15 on Saturday afternoons and that is not broadcast live on Sky Sports. Fixtures taking place on Bank Holidays or Easter will be unavailable for streaming. Sky Sports will have the right to stream the same Championship fixtures to subscribers across their interactive and digital services.

Details of how to access EFL matches domestically will be announced in due course.

I agree Tans. FWIW if I was in the UK and was 50/50 about travelling up to support Swindon on Saturday, and the option to watch it at home for a vast financial saving, swings that decision to about a 90/10 in favour of ifollow.

I’m in Turkey at the moment, can I watch the game on this I follow malarkey - fwiw I probably won’t bother.

Yes, you can pay per game abroad as well.

Stream quality has generally been pretty good this season - maybe it's because the footbal is easier to watch!

I doubt this will have a huge impact on attendances, due to the pay per view nature most will take on iFollow.  I presume the clubs agreed to it because they get increased media revenues, so should probably have complained a bit more when selling their souls initially.

I'm not sure it was clear to them that this would happen (Saturday, 3pm). At least, that was the Accrington chairman's view.  I got the impression it wasn't mentioned explicitly in their meeting in Portugal.

Interesting that it'll cost £10 to watch the match from the UK, whereas if I'm 'abroad' then it's only a fiver.
If someone was going to stream anyway then the money saved from a few of those a season will go a long way towards a decent VPN subscription.

Didn't read the contract? didn't seek clarification?  Too busy hob nobbing?

Either way, it is highly unlikely that this is by virtue of a loophole in the agreement, especially given past sensitivities on showing 3pm kick offs on Saturday and court cases for pubs using foreign satellite feeds.

Sorry, pay attention and do the due diligence.  Too busy looking at pound signs I imagine.  Without going full Reg, it's like people who spent 40 years moaning about the EU because they advert they watched int he 70's told them it was just a trading block, rather than doing some research on the background and motives of the Political Union.

It sounds as though there was no contract. That there was no clarification to seek as there was no debate. It was just done, without consultation.

At least according to the Accy Chairman:

Quote
Accrington Stanley majority shareholder Andy Holt is angry and dismayed at the English Football League’s (EFL) decision to allow the streaming of three o’clock Saturday fixtures to the domestic market during the international break.
The EFL is there to represent its 72 member clubs, and Mr Holt feels that Article 48 of the UEFA Statutes (dealing with the audio-visual and radio transmission regulations of national associations) was not discussed at the EFL Summer Conference in Portugal, with no debate taking place regarding any exceptions to the existing blackout on domestic coverage of Saturday afternoon fixtures.

The issue was not made available for debate, and as a result the details within Article 48 were never brought to light.

While Mr Holt accepts that EFL member clubs were written to at the beginning of July, the broadcasting exceptions during the international break were not made available for debate or agreed upon at the Summer Conference, and those exceptions were not highlighted in any form of detail in subsequent correspondence from the EFL.

As a member club of the EFL, Accrington Stanley expects detailed information concerning any changes to rules that directly impact upon the club, and Mr Holt expects a full and proper debate followed by a vote on substantive issues such as this.

also:

Got a letter from @EFL explaining to us in a paragraph that they were scrapping the no Saturday streaming rule. Letter sent in early July when everyone’s on holiday.

Don’t quote paragraphs from past letters to us @EFL

WE DIDN’T KNOW, IT’S AS SIMPLE AS THAT.

Actually, I might be confusing myself on that one :-), might be thinking of the midweek ones, anyway, separate point.  The clubs need to pay attention when they start selling their souls - some may be fine with doing so though.

I guess the question is how much from the £10 per person per game does each club get. Presumably if you view via the STFC link then the club gets a cut.

You could see some clubs thinking they may as well get a few quid off those who might not go to a game than no ticket sale at all. Especially for the wet Tuesday night away games up North that only die hard attend.

I would imagine the historically 'big' clubs in the EFL like Leeds, Villa or Sunderland with lots of supporters who live away from those cities or abroad doing quite well out of this deal.

Sent from my HTC U11

I'm with you somewhat.

It's a 70 mile drive from Guildford to home games and if I want to be parked and sat in my seat for KO we're talking a little under (or sometimes a little over) 2 hours.  Longer to enjoy a leisurely pre match pint.  Usually travel on my own and at 45p per mile, it's about GBP 60.00.  Better if shared.  Last week I was buggered on the M4 and only caught the last 25 minutes and still paid full admission (worth it for Bayo's 94th minute equaliser :) ).

You can't beat being there but I'll be honest it would probably half my attendance at home games if I could watch a stream of a home game (and ditto aways).  The quality was decent and I'd like to give Andrew Hawes a pat on the back.  He's developed into a very decent commentator.

We read about Premiership clubs still being able to make money with no crowds (or charging much less to retain the atmosphere for the tv viewers) but the economics are very different in the EFL.  I cannot see how Saturday streaming in the UK will help and especially if the club take GBP 1.00 per match view.  Still, I was never going to go to bloody Morecambe but well done to those who did!

Must admit if I was outside the UK,  or even 100+ miles away,  less than £3 a game doesn't sound too much of a rip off - assuming it works.  Anyone know how much it is to stream 'odd' games please ?..

provided each session ticket holder gets access, even u18 on a family ticket, I'm happy with that.

of course it's not the same value as being there, but it's the best possible thing they can do in these shitty times

As a ST holder, I’m not that fussed about VFM to be honest. I’d rather be at a game than watch on TV but it seems ok value for those who have access.

Maybe another benefit is that SKY can distribute some income to the lower league clubs from this thus top up the shortfall from the Gate receipts.

As others have said a decent outcome despite these awful times.
It’s going to get some getting used to though watching it on TV when you go to all the home and away matches. I will miss my away day adventures with my lads.

Living in Spain, I had a season ticket for ifollow last year. The stream was always good and the only issues were overuse of replays and the commentary being a second or two behind the play.

I watch every game with my dad. We have made it more realistic by setting the air conditioning to 2 degrees with industrial fans blowing that cold air directly into our eyes. My mum makes us burgers for half time and if the opposition score we gob at her.
If we lose, we both wait out side the apartment and any passing stray cat gets a proper kicking.

That is good news, that sounds like season ticket holders will get access to away games too, even though the ST wouldn't normally cover away matches.

Not sure if that's the case, but if so even better.

Good point, hopefully that's the case, doesn't make any difference to me as I'm in France for most of the season anyway but it would offset the cost better for those with season tickets than just the home games.

Wonder if this means it'll be Sky's cameras used or Sky are just chucking a bunch of money at iFollow (owned by NeuLion, a company from the USA, I think they are called)? If the more assumed latter, this may mean that iFollow can have no excuses but to invest better in the livecasts of the matchday infrastructure.

With many more eyes (literally) on their performance, a good, efficient and responsive customer service chat would be at least the minimum. Troubleshooting will need to be pretty on the ball too (things like a well synced commentary). People won't accept the poor level of service that has been provided to date, and let's face it they are offering a premium service so all of the parts produced should be of a consistent quality.

Thinking this may even become a more long term option, as once you open the gates on more "armchair" availability it is difficult to go back, I wonder if a company like PremierSPorts/FreeSports would go after a streaming contract. They already have some rights to 3pm Premier League matches  :hmmm:. From what I saw recently, via their online player, they not only had some ok commentary but the stream was available upto 1080p, with zero issues. Who owns FreeSports? I wonder if they used to be Santana (or whatever), just going by the branding/colours?

They have some quite high profile sponsor contracts via their ads so must have a decent bit of budgie and stream La Liga too. iFollow (NeuLion) would be wise to up their game because surely Premier/Free Sports would be sniffing at grabbing the rights to produce and stream for L1&L2?

As stated above I am pretty sure that iFollow doesn't have the rights to stream EFL cup games, they never showed last season vs Col U or the season before vs FGR.

You will have to buy a 1 game UK pass and put it through a VPN probably.

Still fucking laughable though. A Thai based company sponsoring an English Cup yet foreign viewers not allowed to view. I know it's to do with right but still a load of bollocks.

Mind you a similar thing can be said for shellfish caught in the UK. The largest shellfish trawling industries is in the UK, yet very little of that market stays here (the largest exporter in Europe), cos people want shitty scampi and chips. It's very shellfish behaviour.

EFL & FA Cup rights are sold as separate bundles, I can usually get the games that are on TV over here.

It's kind of nuts, but more on that later. Indeed, or Lidl/Aldi. I know it's a supply chain thing but surely people must look and think logically about this stuff - well unless it's the UK Gov but that is also a different story.

Oh aye, I get that just still one of those bizarre things regarding broadcasting rights. You'd imagine wherever the sponsor company was based (whatever the medium), that they could wangle an agreement that at least benefited that country. Then again, that isn't necessarily business in the ethical sense.

Tried it with the volume off and listening to the commentary on the radio but the time lag made it difficult,  especially as you knew what was going to happen some time before it did. Overall still worth the money.

Saturdays game is not show as available on my account yet, wondering if it's a problem with my account or they haven't made the game available yet.

You can see the same as me

In the past when I've purchased using the code it doesn't have the fact that the game is available to purchase, that's why I'm curious to see if anyone has anything different. Want to avoid trying to get the game avaiable last minute, but thanks for your response

My guess (hope) is that I-follow will allow Season ticket Holders to log into the match at 2pm tomorrow.  Doesn't leave much scope though for sorting out problems...

...assuming the game goes ahead.  Gonna be a tough match methinks  ::)

Tomorrow is the first game with no codes, but you'll need to make sure your account for iFollow is the same as your club account with the ticket office.

Watching through the app on iPad  is the only way I’ve been able to watch without buffering.
After the first couple Of games I gave up trying anything else.
Ipad has been fine though it wouldn’t be if there were 2 or 3 of us tryin* to crowd round it.

I have been credited with a pass on Ifollow for Oxford Saturday, without paying for it. Would this be because an away game which I paid for was called off earlier in the season?

For those that have had issues this doesn't help but this service has been fantastic for me.

never had an issue with streaming or audio and I have watched every game this season (probably the only negative) when usually I would only be able to get to say 10-15 home games and one or two select away fixtures per season.

It helps having options at weekends restricted but I love the idea of watching town from home especially away games. nothing will be beat the cg but I would the idea of driving to crewe again on a tuesday night in comparison is huge.

Yeah i'm of the same opinion.

I just take myself off to a different room to the wife with my laptop (screen probably just about big enough for me) and enjoy my 2.5 hour break on a Saturday win, lose or draw. Pick and choose my midweek games

Its not perfect, but for £10 I think i'm getting a decent service. Never any issues with streaming (occasional sound issues, but I don't pay much attention to what commentators say anyway)

I'm still waiting for my free Ifollow pass that I won earlier this week on the EFL rewards app. Hoping it arrives in time so I don't have to inadvertently give Oxford any money.

TBF I had massive problems (i.e. just didn't work) for the first couple of games but since then it's been pretty good, bar some buffering issues occasionally. Oh and we don't seem to be scoring as much, but I complained about that and iFollow support said there was nothing they could do about that, it was "not our department" apparently. Bloody jobsworths!

I found it reasonably OK using a laptop. Not super smooth TV quality, but not bad.

If you are talking IPTV, my mates was often juddery when he used it.

Problem is, there are so many things in play to diagnose things properly over a forum. Even wifi performance can kill quality.

I pay for the Ifollow stream. Not IPTV. Both games had same issue so far. Not a smooth picture when movement from camera. Internet speed is fast. Just wondering if watching via another source is smoother. I do like viewing via my TV so not overly fussed as it's not too bad.

I watch via by iPad. Very occasional picture degradation, but overall pretty faultless.

It’s my Vodafone broadband which is the problem at the moment - all the tourists are putting a strain on it. That should ease in a couple of weeks.

I couldn't manage to get video yesterday for more than a few seconds, which meant I ended the game in a worse mood than if we'd lost  :soapy tit wank:

I could only get the option of audio on my laptop, despite trying three different browsers and clearing cache/cookies. If I cleared cache on my phone then I could get video very briefly, before it cut out and said I didn't have permission. All this was using Nord.

I don't suppose anyone more technical would have a clue why, or if there's a way to resolve this? I've had issues before but always manage to get it to work in the end.

Cheers.

they may well have blocked the Nord VPN you are using. other than trying different countries under nord I'm not sure what else you can do.

I have a UK friend who also uses Nord and got booted out once or twice after parting with his tenner.  On his usual desktop (or laptop).   He's set up a different account on the STFC website to his usual one.  He uses his mother's overseas bank ac to pay (and pays her back).  He also sets Nord to the country of the overseas bank account.  He's a complete tech dinosaur.  He hasn't any idea which component or combination of components works.

They should find a company willing to pay decent money to show lower league football, I'm sure someone other than Sky would be willing, and not show only chumpionship games, but a spread from all divisions, but I suppose would they get viewing figures for Exeter v barrow for e.g.

There must be companies like Channel 4 or 5 for e.g. that would be willing.
