Title: What Other Teams Have You Followed?
Post by: Amir on Monday, January 22, 2018, 17:48:21
And for what reason?

Liverpool - I was an 80's child, sorry.

Wolves - Because of Steve Bull I think, although I convinced myself because I was born nearby that I had a connection.

Hartlepool - Because they were shit.

And one exotic foreign team...

Albion Rovers - They were bottom of the Scottish Third Division(You can see a pattern forming here).

Liverpool - to impress a boy when I was about 7.

Spurs are my second team as much as I hate admitting that. My family are from Tottenham and I've lived there.

Supported or followed?

When I was a kid I was probably the only one who supported Arsenal in y primary school when we went to Wembley, in my defence I do come from just around the corner from Highbury. That said I then flirted with Leeds United in secondary school before seeing the light and following the team that played at the theatre of dispair the one and only Swindon Town. I do follow Arsenal now but my heart is forever at SN1 at 3pm on a Saturday.

I liked Man Utd in the playground, before they won the Cup in 1990, then I didn't like them - I clearly liked a lost cause (everyone I knew as a kid pre-Senior School was a Liverpool fan).

In terms of keeping an eye out for a team I had a spell liking  - Red Star Belgrade, Foggia & Stranraer.  Right now, I try to give my local support to Atlanta Utd in the MLS.  They've taken to it quite well to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised.  To bring this full circle though, they have a Liverpool Supporters Club which meet in a pub in Atlanta, which I happened across last year, grrrr.

I supported Leicester due to family ties. Considered myself a fan through the Martin o Neil era, started watching town regularly from 2004 (I was 14) and allegeiances changed. Still look out for their results though, and the other year was quite nice

****Before I start, I don't support any of these. Except maybe support the Kiwi's, strictly when they aren't playing us (in Football that's not so much a problem). I just follow these teams via different influences.****

Arsenal - Grew up watching them and for such a long time their defence was the best around. As a CB, watching Tony Adams et al was inspirational a stuff. They were pretty good throughout the field tbh.

Spurs - Controversial, after following Arsenal but purely for the links Town have had with them over the years.

West Brom - Due to my old man. He followed them from the mid 60's into the 80's. Would rave about them, so I always look out for their results. Was disappointed when i learnt Adrian Chiles is a lifelong fan.

Forest & Derby - My childhood and current local teams. You can't breathe without them being mentioned around here. I give them one thing, they both have incredibly loyal sets of fans. They could both be playing non league and they'd turn up. Credit where it's due. Prefer Forest to Derby, purely because Derby fans tend to think they are the better club, yet haven't actually won anything for about 30 years. Forest it's been around 10.

New Zealand - Think this is thanks to a few Kiwi mates, but one mate in particular. Not just tied to football but I look out or even watch them in any sport. One thing they never lack is passion and winning mentality. It's absorbing. However they often can't handle losing. No one's perfect. Was rooting for them to beat Peru to qualify for the World Cup.

Chippenham coz my stepdad was chairman for 25 years, my mum was chairman for 5 years and my uncle played in goal for them about 600 times.

Liverpool as I lived with a big fan for a few years and was a child of the 80's.  Randomly also Man City and Southampton.

There are more teams I detest - apart from the usual suspects.

Watford, Muff, Villa, Brum, Luton spring to mind.

There are some I don’t mind, I suppose. The rest can all fuck off, really.

Family connections to Chippenham Town but not as close as Sax.

Don’t care about their form et al.

Leyton Orient - was born in the local hospital and lived next to the ground for many years. When we were old enough used to go with my uncle Bill RIP, he was about 4 years older than me. Left London when I got married and moved to ...
Gravesend and Northfleet - nuff said. 1989 moved to ...
Swindon Town - got involved with a mate running the Junior Robins and enjoyed the STFC roller coaster for many years until I relegated myself to ...
Rubin Kazan - see them occasionally but follow Town on the internet and sometimes manage to get to a match when I come back to visit family.

I've heard all is not well at Hardenhuish Park, due to the club being run on a shoestring. They need a revolution fast or something is going to buckle!

I went as a kid a few times when the crowd was about 50 people, remember listening to my grandfather bellowing at the ref from the other side of the pitch. I also went a few times about 15 years back when they had a few big games, but I never felt any sort of affiliation.

Webbs by any chance?

For me:

Brora Rangers, amongst some mates it was the furthestmost senior team we knew, and I got there first. Seen them a bunch of times from the 80s onwards, some of the friendliest people you could wish to meet. But can they drink... I think the Highland League is a drinking club, where sometimes football gets played.

Dulwich Hamlet, Leytonstone/Ilford in the John Still days, St Albans City, all places I lived near. Ditto Charlton and C Palace, always look out for their scores but not a supporter of by any means.

Real Betis, for obscure Pyrenees-related reasons.

Leeds as a kid in the 70s until I started going to watch Swindon and still look outfor their results. Don Revie's Leeds were by far the best team I've ever seen.

In Scotland I've always had a soft spot for Brechin City - for no other reason than I looked at the Scottish league tables once when I was little and Brechin were bottom of the old 2nd Division and I just started following their results from then on.

Red Star 93 in France - when I moved to France in 1998 Frederic Darras started playing for Red Star not long afterwards so I went along to watch them as they were one of my local teams (the other being Noisy Le Sec). Philippe Cuervo also joined them a few years later. I've since moved away but I still follow their results and have even been to see them play when it's not been too far away (last game was a couple of years ago at Luçon, about 150 km from me - took the whole family (5 of us) and swelled the Red Star support from 13 to 18.....). Also go to see my local team Angers play occasionally, although I haven't been since they got promoted to Ligue 1. The football here is dire and it says it all that I'd rather go to watch Swindon play in League 2 than Angers in the French Ligue 1.

Used to go to Arsenal quite a bit but wouldn't say I supported them. A fondness for sure.

knew it was over the day we drew at the CG. Just as they became successful again.

Would still rather they win the league then anyone else, but nothing more. oddly still hate the scousers though.

Born in Liverpool.  First Anfield match in 1968.  When I lived in Tottenham 85-91, went to see them away at every London ground (as I did the Town also).

Still love 'em.

In no particular order,

Chelsea - when I was about 6 we had to buy a football kit for football at school, Giles in Carterton only had Chelsea and Swansea shirts and I liked blue.... However they have come to personify everything that's wrong with football so no interest now.

Barcelona - it's a difficult one as it's become so cliched to like them, but my interest goes back to 1982 when my mate went on holiday to Spain and came back with a Maradona Barca shirt, it was all so exotic. Also expanded a bit in the 90's when I lived in Newcastle and there is a bit of a thing between the two, what with being in the North East and having a strong regional identity.

Newcastle - lived there for 5 years including the Keegan years, hard not to get whipped up in it all plus still got a lot of Geordie friends. Incidentally that time has also fostered a pathological hatred on Manchester United.

Gateshead - went to most home games for 2-3 years when I lived up there, likewise Lancaster City when lived there. Looking to try and get to Barrow at some stage....

Forfar - absolutely no idea, assume I just liked the name....

However as I am struggling to get inspired by football at the moment, it's all a bit meh..

Lillestrøm SK - Jan's former club and my 'local' club in Norway. Won the cup last year, which was nice.
Fulham - always been a club I kind of had a soft spot for and then I ended up living nearby.

There are other teams I have soft spots for but don't follow

Exeter - good friend of mine supports them and my dad did briefly when he lived there
Cardiff/Swansea - just because I live in South Wales most of my friends support either one or the other (most around here support Liverpool/Chelsea and the like but I don't associate with them  8))
Rosenborg BK - a good friend from uni lives not far from their ground, he's the reason I fell in love with Norway.

Ajax - as a kid found the total football awesome and with great players like Cruyff, Neeskins et al I was a fan. Have been to Amsterdam Arena a few times over the years and still get to see great young players like Zlatan, Suarez, Eriksen and more and watch them on Sky, though quality has definitely gone down with Premier League snapping up good players at younger ages now.
Crystal Palace - had a soft spot when Don Rogers moved there, they were my local team for 8 years and have a good friend who is a season ticket holder.

Growing up liked Wolves. David Wagstaffe was a particular favourite. Started going to see the Town and that was it. When Swindon lost to Wolves in the semis of the LC, that was it - no more soft spot for Wolves. Took a bit of a kicking up there as well that didn't help.
Some clubs I'm apathetic about others I detest - the usual suspects, Scum, Traders, Franchise.
I do have a soft spot though for Montrose. Can't remember why but I do hope to get up there to see them before I peg it.

I've been Swindon mad since I could walk but I did "support" West Ham as well as a kid (the support extended to I'd get their kit every other year). Can't say I support them at all now but do look out for their results, but generally don't lose sleep if they lose. I went to watch Ipswich a few times with an ex-girlfriend too and became quite fond of them. I've remained on really good terms with her and her family so always look out for the Tractor Boys now. Similarly, she's still following Swindon and her current fella is an Oxford fan.. Can imagine that goes down well.

Always admired Barcelona too, both times they played United in the CL final I cheered for Barca. Went to watch them a couple of weeks ago and they're a fantastic club.

Hearts - due to living in Edinburgh. Had a season ticket they won the Scottish Cup and split the old firm.

Avenir Beggen - similarly when I lived in Luxembourg. A group of ex-pats that wanted to watch regular football picked Beggen (as their website had a section in English). When we started watching they were in the top league, first game we went to was a 9-0 defeat away at their local rivals and it never really got any better. They are currently in the third division which is pretty sad as historically they have played quite a few big names in the relevant European competitions, and Ipswich Town back in the early 2000s.

I sometimes go and watch Fulham now as its local and a decent afternoon out.

I started going to watch Swindon in 1996 when it was kid for a quid, watched until I was about 16/17 then stopped going once I had to buy adult tickets - just couldn't afford it.

I started getting back into football when I bought my first house in about 2005, culminating in buying Sky Sports and watching Arsenal's champion's league run in 2005/06 on the telly. Was thinking I might start supporting Arsenal when Dennis Wise was employed by the town and I looked into getting a season ticket, found this place and I've had a season ticket ever since.

Had I not bought a season ticket for Town, I'd have probably ended up 'supporting' Arsenal.

For some strange reason and I cant put my finger on it, I quite like Wycombe too.

I go to Barcelona quite often and my mates uncle's company is a sponsor so if a game is on when i'm over there, we tend to go.

I grew up in Northampton, and I cant stand them. Live in Milton Keynes and I detest them. Man Utd, Oxford, Bristol clubs, cant stand. Have a strange putrid dislike to Bolton but that's because of John Mcginley.

Yep me and the old man hated them while he was there. Didn't mind them when the likes of Jay Jay Okocha and Allardyce's "stars of yesterday" were there. Certainly extended the careers of a few players!
