Apparently the bomb squad and police are at an address in Magnolia Court at the moment, the area is cordoned off and roads blocked!

Did Swindon get bombed much in WWII?

I mean the Supermarine factory must have been a target I suppose..

Yeah loads of Swindon suffered heavy bomb damage from where they tried to bomb the GWR works, my mum lost a few school friends in Gorse Hill down Beatrice Street.

Gorse Hill, Pinehurst and Rodbourne were worst hit IIRC.

The house I grew up in in ferndale was rebuilt after being bombed in the war, there are a few other patches of empty land and houses that look out of place in ferndale/gorse hill due to bombing. I don’t know if that was because the railway works were being targeted or bombs were just being dumped, but I’m sure Reg will tell us shortly

My friend who lives there said the area is swarming with armed poilce so I doubt its WW2 related.

On that subject though a bit more detail here....

Quite a bit, but nothing compared to Plymuff, Bristol and Saturdays opponents. Interestingly the Supermarine factory was built here as a method of scaling down an obvious target in Southampton, so that production had a chance of being maintained in the case of a hit.  Which is why there were also sites in Blunsdon and South Marston.

The Garrards site in Newcastle Street used to be covered in camouflage paint, which I tended to think wouldn't have been much use in an air raid.

Horrific yet fascinating. And it could really have been much, much worse too. Not that it is any consolation to the dead and their families.

Often these things are a hoax, but in the present climate you never know.

There are worse things that could happen to Pinehurst than it gets blown to pieces - like it doesn't get blown to pieces :D

On a more serious note - I hope no one comes to any harm.

Just driven through there, nothing. No roads closed off. Traffic great.

My old man grew up in Pinehurst during the war and whilst my granddad was away in Burma avoiding my grandma my dad spent many nights sleeping in one of these with my grandma and his younger sister...

Towards the end of the war they also befriended a PoW and there was a story about it a few years back with a picture in the Advertiser of my dad and his mates in the 40's.

News reports said that searches will be ongoing, doesn't sound like an WWII era bomb to me...
