Title: Dartford v Swindon Town - Matchday Thread
Post by: Private Fraser on Sunday, November 5, 2017, 11:38:54
It's a cup tie. What can possibly go wrong?

Scrappy one-all draw.

I wouldn’t feel confident about this game if Town were currently unbeaten.

0-4

Our away form is devastating and as a consequence we should be confident of stamping our authority on the game right from the start. Score first and they have to come at us and that as we know creates chances especially when they ought to tire in the latter stages of the second half.

Dartford are flying high in National League South, top of the table with 9 wins and only 3 defeats so far.

Highest scorers in their league with 34 goals and only 15 against.

6 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat at home so far, scoring 21 and conceding only 6 they will be very hard to break down.

2-1 defeat in front of the American cameras with 750 Town fans in a crowd of 2,765 with Dunne sent off.

Pre match not enough drinking time in The Flying Boat.

In the town where Mick & Keith first figured out how best to shag lots of women & take lots of drugs, hopefully we can finally get some FA Cup satisfaction and bring this dismal run of failure to an end.

Difficult one today, would happily take a replay, but at least it won't be men against boys.

I suppose but while we've picked up several clean sheets, why mess with a settled team. All about momentum. If Vigs can get over himself and prove he's a mature pro, i'm sure he'll be in the squad in no time.

I'll go for 3-0 to us.

Just get a bet365 account mate. Put a £5 in (you can withdraw it after the match). You don't need to put a bet on but you'll be able to select whichever FA Cup stream takes your fancy. So effectively then you can keep an eye on all todays stream. At full time, withdraw your £5 back into your bank account and never use i again (if you want) :)

You can "pop it out" (that's what she said) in a separate window and enlarge. If you need to you can use your page zoom facility and go to like 150% however this will make the resolution slightly crap. It's the only downside to the bookies streams. Although they are usually fairly lag free and don't buffer.

To be honest if w played that way against most League Two sides and a far chunk of League One then we would tear them apart. I know we had more time on the ball but Dartford have a good set up. This could easily have been a cup upset. The ball on the ground was sublime at times as well as still committed to a good old fashioned tackle. Professional and workmanlike performance from all today. Goals from Linganzi & Elsnik will boost their confidence. The commentator at one point said "you can see why Swindon are doing well in L2...the way they pass the ball around" Haha, he's obviously not seen us much (however, when we have got the ball down we have actually played some good stuff or at least played with good intent/ideas).

Chesterfield at home next and the lads should be preparing to go all out for a 3+ goal fest. It'll be a different game but i'd say Dartford could give Chesterfield a good run at the moment. Great set up there and I think they deserve to be at Conference proper level. Credit to them for putting on a decent match with a team that tried to play, unfortunately for them we were too strong for them in physicality and dare I say it, quality. Today was definitely men against boys, just this time Swindon were he men and we deserved the victory.

It's clinical, efficient football, with goal threats throughout the team and a solid defensive base. Loads of potential.

Was actually going to mention the "Rovers" game but i'm torn. I guess it's better than a training game, so a win in two cup matches would set us up nicely and if (we should) we win against Chesterfield then we could truly start saying we have winning momentum. That can only be good. Despite the Boycott Cup being an inconvenience.

Surprised no one mentioned that giant wooden statue in the stand to our left. Weird.

Good day out anyway. Lovely little ground and club who took their defeat with a lot of class. Good performance really, could've been more but understandably (and sensibly) we took our foot of the gas. Last years lot would have lost yesterday! Impressed with McDermott who seemed to be playing in about 8 different positions. Elsnik too was a cut above, hope his injury isn't too bad.

Title: Re: Dartford v Swindon Town - Matchday Thread
Post by: Panda Paws on Monday, November 6, 2017, 09:56:00
For periods we looked a different class to them, particularly the opening 25 mins of each half. At periods we stood off and managed the game out.

Most of our threat came from McDermott and Mullin pressing. McDermott doesn't seem to have won over many fans so far but his pressing and workrate and hassling yesterday was good, and he's clearly got quality on the ball too.

Elsnik was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch and Matty Preston is an absolute find. I'd be puttiing a 2-year extension in front of nose sharpish. Reminds me very much of a young Sean Morrison when he was of similar age, before we sold him.

All in all, a supremely comfortable and able performance. Looking forward to my first home game of the season next week now!

The great thing about yesterday was not just that we won but that it was a predictable and totally deserved result, rather than the "phew, thank god for that, dodged a bullet" wins of several other league teams vs non-league.

In my heart I still want a home draw tonight but logically an away tie against non-league gives us the best chance of making the third round.

Didn't realise until yesterday that Arthur Horsfield played for Dartford.

Good day out in Dartford, took in drinks at the uber cheap Dartford Working Mens Club before and after the game, which turned out to be very straight forward.

I think Dartford gave us a bit too much respect and we scored 3 clinical goals before half time. CC made a great save before half time, and his handling was a bit juggly throughout but apart from that he did his job well.

Second half, 2 more clinical finishes killed the game off and we took our foot off the gas allowing Dartford to score, which brought a loud roar from the Dartford fans to our left. (who to be fair did provide a good atmosphere - apart from that bloody drum)

A good team performance and we played a mix of some very good football with some more direct stuff, with Henry Smith winning everything in the air. At the back, again I was very impressed with Matt Preston who oozes class. The work ethic was excellent and professional and we came through with flying colours.

One negative was Woolery who I really want to do well, but he came on and didn't impress me at all. He is definitely down the pecking order based on what I have seen so far.

All in all a good day out and we are in the silk bag for round 2.

Some of the commentary yesterday was exceptional to listen to.. My personal favourite "you can see why Swindon are riding high in league 2, they are passing the ball so beautifully". Had they only been at the Barnet/Crawley home games...

The Dartford lot seem like a nice bunch. I'm glad our travelling lot had a good day.

I too was disappointed with Woolery though.. He's got plenty of energy and enthusiasm (which compared to last season is incredible, I suppose) but he was relatively poor.

We have a good away record, I fail to see how a fairly winnable game is a shit draw.

A shit draw would have been away to a top league 1 side

I really am hoping for a bit of a cup run this year. When we had Fulham away a few years back, it was brilliant. 6000 of us and absolute chaos.

This. We might as well all give up if we're fearing a trip to Stevenage. I'd have taken that before the draw. Won't attract any media attention so will keep us under the radar which is where we want to be.

Spot on.

All I really wanted to avoid was a northern L1 tie away. One of the Wigan, Bradford, Doncaster types.

We keep winning away, we'll take a decent number there and on current form (they've lost 4 of 5 in the league and only beat Nantwich on Saturday) we ought to win. Although it's obviously a few weeks away.

Just worth noting that we've got them scheduled for R3 date. So that game will be off, whatever happens.

oh it's definitely winnable.

it's a shit draw because it's away (from a traveling perspective that's shit for me) and its against a league 2 team.

a league 1 team would have been more shit.

a non league team less so.

That's as good a draw as you could expect in the 2nd Round.  Away form is good, it's completely winnable, it's not hundreds of miles away and I might get to add to my new grounds tally.  Jump this hurdle, and then it gets interesting.

So what would constitute a good draw in the 2nd Round?  As above, I think potential for good draws begins in the round after this.

Home tie vs non league opposition, even though I know we are better away from home its still my idea of a good 2nd round draw, easier on paper than league opponents.

For me I class it as a pretty shit draw because its easily as loseable as it is winnable (yes I know all games are really) . Its against a team with poor home support (who got under 1,500 for the last home game) so we will get a meagre share from gate reciepts. Absolutely no chance of it being shown live on TV so missing out on a possible cash windfall (we got £20k from US TV rights vs Dartford).

We've forgotten what it's like to be in the 2nd round, but usually there might only be a handful of exciting draws..... a few more really horrible draws say Carlisle, Morecambe away and the bulk will be uninspiring.

This one leans towards the shit end, because they're in the same league, and as Ferret pointed out it means we'll postpone the Jan 6th Saturday fixture win or lose.

Yes I am Lee Power come up to me the next home game and ask me and I will give you your dues :D

I was actually driving past Carlisle during the league game and listening to the ranting of the local commentators as I was sat almost at a standstill on the M6 heading to Scotland on that warm August day.

Yes I suppose Carlise away would have been a worse draw for 99% of Town fans.

They were shit in the extreme at the CG. 3-2 should have been 6 or 7. Another standard away win for me.

I’m clambering on the Cup bandwagon and will go to this one.

The point of R2 is to get to R3. Pure and simple. How many ties in that hat are really going to get an established football league club excited? It would be a pretty short list.

Sure, home to random non-league no-hopers would be nice. In R1, when there are 32 non-league teams in the hat, that's a realistic ambition. But by now most of them are out. And, to be honest, I don't really want the hassle of playing at home to Hereford or Oxford City, who would both bring thousands (especially with United being out) and view it as a final. Not my idea of fun. Or Billericay, who have a load of random ex-Prem players - that would get the BBC into a frenzy.

We're a better team than Stevenage and in better form than them (at the moment), and, as others have said, our recent win over them should have been more comfortable than it was. We ought to beat them and, if we don't, we won't deserve to be in the hat.

with our track record against non league teams and in view of our current away form I think I will settle for the draw we have,  at least IF we do get beat it won't exactly be headline  'Giantkilling' news on the back page.

That diving sod Andy Johnson having the song "you'll never play for England" changed to "you'll never play for Swindon" and sung at him was quite humorous - as was the look on his face when he realised we were aiming it at him.

That away day when we went there the other year is up with the best away days i have been on

Fulham (including George Best, Bobby Moore and Rodney Marsh) away in 1977 when we drew 3-3, that was a good away day  :-)  Marsh booked after about 5 seconds, reacting to an obstruction by Ray McHale with the ball still in the centre circle. McHale was booked two minutes later for a tackle on Marsh. Fulham scored 2 late goals to snatch a draw.  Don Rogers was the Swindon sub.

Although Best was brilliant in the replay we won 5-0.  Apparently after the game he was the last one on the Fulham bus after signing innumerable autographs.

The Football Pink match report can be read on:
http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/HeadToHead.asp?Team=Fulham#NewspaperReports

It amazes me how such long and detailed match reports could be written, printed and be on sale an hour or so after matches were finished. Not just reports on the Town's matches but also short reports on dozens of Football League and local Wiltshire League and District League games. This was when all the type face was set by hand.

Versus Fulham, the game I always remember was the fa cup game at their place in 1987 (third round I think?) It was that really cold winter and everyone was jumping up and down on that open terrace, trying to keep warm. The groundsman even painted the lines blue because the pitch was white with frost.

Also remember their fans turning up at the CG with the begging buckets about the same time, before that rich bloke bought them.

As a former Putney resident, I have to point out your glaring omission of The Half Moon pub on the Lower Richmond Road.  Fairly sure that Putney Pies was not there when I was living there in the mid-2000s.

Pretty sure he's still there. I lived in Barnes for years. Saw him running the Thames path between Barnes Bridge and Hammersmith Bridge.

And also Putney - the amazing Goan restaurant (Ma Goa) on the Upper Richmond Road.
