Title: Chinese in Swindon
Post by: cired45 on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, 09:50:03
I know that this has probably been posted somewhere here before, but I am looking for a recommended Chinese is Swindon, who offer all you can eat buffet.  I am sure that there are some gastronomes on here who could help.  Trying to organize something for my drivers

Some may dissagree but I've been to the place that used to be the Chinese Experience a few times and really enjoyed it.
They do Lunch and Evening Buffets. Unfortunately at Lunch you don't get thinks like crispy duck, sushi and the teppenyaki station but there is still a lot of choice.

I Like Chinese
They only come up to your knees
Yet they're always friendly
And they're ready to please

Seriously? Been a couple of times as the kids like it, it's been fucking rank. Grease laden lukewarm "food" and an extremely limited range at that. The mould on the walls gives you something entertaining to look at, though, while you're trying not to look at the food.

Not quite in Swindon but if you don't mind travelling to the wild extremes of Bassett, Oriental Aroma on the High Street is really good for veggies.

Is that the one at the top of town near(ish) to the Witherspoons.

Can only agree with you if so, dreadful. Went once, then back to TCRFKATCE

You can only go from your own experience I guess. We went twice, first time about a year or so ago, it was terrible, but decided it might just have been a one-off so gave into the kids' nagging and gave it another go about 6-9 months ago(?) and it was just as bad in terms of quality but with less choice. So at least it didn't take as long to decide what to dislike :)

Another option for Cired, the World food place down the bottom of town near the police station

Another vote for avoiding the Banquet - the mould on the walls alone should be a warning sign to people.

Why did i have to marry a 5ft, 7 stone woman who eats less for dinner than i can fit in one mouth full.
I never get to go to all you can eats because we'll pay 15/20 quid and she'll be full after half a plate. I've been wanting to go to the World Food Buffet and the Brazilian all you can eat for ages....

I haven't been to the new Rendezvous yet, but I imagine it's just the same as the one by the Wyvern, best Chinese I've been to in Swindon and they do an all you can eat buffet.

Not been to the Rendezvous for years but i remember it being very good. It has its pro's that you can choose from a menu and is cooked fresh for you but the con being you can't be overly adventurous because they get shitty when you leave food.
At least that's what it used to be like.

Is there such a thing as a good Chinese in Swindon? They're all pretty shite in my experience. Go for a curry instead.

Rendezvous every time - the new place in Old Town is just as good food wise as ever, if not better, and good service.  Their beef in black bean sauce is best I have ever had.  Rendezvous take-aways above average as well (we use Abbey Meads - generally pretty good for take away)

Avoid what was the Chinese Experience like the plague (unless you want to catch the plague) - bloody awful food, everything tastes the same (grease in a grease sauce, just with different bits of (non-discernible) meat floating in it), loads of high sugar desserts for the kids (yay).  Was OK 20 years ago but now truly atrocious.

Went up to see HongXin on Pepper Box Hill.  Got there late so they didn’t have tha hot plate grill going and limited on their buffet, but in fairness it was 21.15 when I got there.  Staff seemed friendly and whilst not the best, the food would satisfy my group of hungry bus drivers.  Going to give rendevous a look next week.  Gotta make sure it’s OK for the boys.  Thanks to all

A thumbs up for Rendezvous too. Their sit down, takeaway and delivery have been great over the years and they've been around for a while.

I once bumped into a pissed up Steve McMahon at the restaurant by the Wyvern, but even that didn't put me off.

The Abbeymeads delivery is now my Chinese of choice.

Abbeymeads Rendezvous have been disappointing the last couple of times I've ordered. Thinking of trying somewhere new.

China Kitchen in Commercial Road and Emperors Kitchen in Moredon both deliver to West Swindon. Anyone else tried them? Or know a better place?

Seven stars which is at the end of the row of shops in green meadow is outstanding. Be prepared for a long wait if you require delivery on weekends mind. 2.5 hours I was told the other Saturday. Collection still took just over an hour. That’s the sign of a good take away in my view.

Not ordered a Chinese in ages, any recommendations?

I heard Mr Moks was good but can't even find a website so I guess they no longer exist.
We're in East Swindon.

Mr Moks is/was owned by the same family that run the Rendezvous. Abbey Meads Rendezvous is run by them and does a cracking take away (in fact had one last night) and they deliver.  Well worth giving them a go.

I got round to trying Seven Stars and you are right, the food was outstanding. I didn't order at the weekend and it was delivered to West Swindon in less than an hour. I think I've found my new Chinese delivery. I'll be giving them a few more goes soon. Thanks.

I think I understand both sides of the biscuit here. Extremities. While 2.5hrs to essentially wait for a glorified stir-fry (I'm not talking a restaurant here, purely take-a-way) is probably on the long side (what are they doing?), I would be pretty concerned if my order-food was ready in 10-15mins. An hour I would say is an acceptable tops waiting time. Anything grossly over is either incredibly short staffed/slow staff/ineptitude.

Of course, other factors come in like the size of the order, the variance of dishes ordered and if there are several large orders in that all vary then that takes some consideration. 2.5hrs though? Still seem a long time. Not great for business in that trade as the main "Dinner Window" is 6-9pm, if someone orders at 7pm then they aren't going to want to eat at near 10pm and takes away the term take-a-way!

It could have just been a one off and they got caught out. If the food ordered was hot, delicious and made for an enjoyable evening then that is the main end game.

On the face of it 2.5 hours does seem excess however Bamboo’s reply pretty well covers it.

Thing is in curry houses they have a few basic sauces then depending on the meat/veg constituent they chuck in a variant of addition herbs and spices to give you what you have ordered. After all have any of you ever wondered how they manage to make 100 different didshes in twenty minutes?

Far eastern dishes are kind of made on demand from scratch with a stir fry process and that to me seems a different proposition. You cannot keep vegetables in a stir fry cooking or stewing in a sauce if thye’re Supposed to crispy, again look at all the variant dishes in the chinkypoo and see how many are ‘crispy Fried this or that’ completely different cuisine and method of cooking.

Two and a half hours eh? Better book early for Christmas then.
