Title: Swindon Town v Cambridge Utd Official Match Day Thread
Post by: FreddySTFC! on Saturday, September 30, 2017, 07:06:05
Been a while since I started one of these. I'd like us to line up something like this.
                              Vigs
         Knoyle Preston Lancashire Hussey
                     T Smith Elsnik
                        McDermott
                    Woolery     Norris
                           H Smith

Taylor for Hussey if he's still unfit. Tom Smith isn't going to feature realistically so Linganzi is probably the more likely option. Mullin, Gordon & Anderson the impact subs. If Robertson starts again he'll have serious trouble trying to contain the powerful Ikpeazu & Ibehre. 2-1 Town for me, we'll have just enough about us today.

Asked myself after the Coventry game is the current style of play is a better watch than what's been on offer for the previous 2 seasons. Upon reflection, despite a more direct and at times rushed approach, but based on our attacking play so far, yes it is.
The way the pressure was built in the final third for that period in the second half on Tuesday was reminiscent of a PdC side. Getting used to watching this team now and like the look of us going forward.
If we can hover around the top 10 or better until January then with a couple of astute additions who knows.

A glorious victory today.

A win would be good but I think a draw more likely - not an easy game ( again )

Flitters could do with avoiding defeat today, another home loss and the few remaining loyalists might start to get upset.

Apparently he wants us to be like Juve  :) can't quite see the parallel myself, as they played 3 at the back, to compensate for the relative lack of pace of Barzagli, Bonucci, and Chielini. Leonardo has moved, not sure how they're coping without him.

So can we expect to see Preston, Lancashire, Robertson  :hmmm:

Regarding Dunne's overturned red card. I'm not quite sure how they decided it was a wrongful dismissal as he pushed the guy in the face. Irrespective what the guy was doing to wind him up he correctly was shown red. Odd. Club played a blinder there.

It's not violent conduct and never a red card.

You quoted me twice.
"A player is guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive
force or brutality against an opponent when not
challenging for the ball"

A push in the face is not considered excessive force then. Tremendous.

Stewards taking the lids off plastic bottles of drinks and making you leave them outside.  When I queried the purpose of this, the steward said someone had filled one with urine and thrown it, so now they were stopping all lids coming in.  Not sure where that logic comes from when you can still take the plastic bottle in.  Absolutely stupid!

we've missed two golden opportunities to go further ahead. I say missed, but there were a couple of good blocks in truth.

woolery looks a mixed bag, a couple of cool headed crosses nearly yielding success, but the time a cool head was needed as we broke clear with a man over  free he goes full Gump.

Cambridge aren't out of it by any means, but we look more likely to score.

Still a bit shit, slightly less shit than last week. We seem to be helped by Cambridge not having anyone that can run on beyond our defence.

Decent so far and we looked assured at the back, just not closing down enough outside the box.

No lids has supposed to have been a thing for 20 odd years, to prevent them being used as missiles.

The game itself would be improved if someone threw some piss on the pitch mind.

This entire division including us is dire.

We can at least rest assured that we will be consistent in our approach.

Fans appear to be getting restless at our style and the fact we are giving Cambridge time to move th ball about a bit, but I reckon it is our best tactic.  We look more threatening when we have space behind or allow the game to become stretched, so we are likely to have a few chances as a result.  For the lack of possession we have had a couple of clear sights at goal.  It is not fun watching though.

Certainly isn’t pretty but has been reasonably effective so far.

Really liking the look of Gordon, his work on the wing in the build up to the goal was superb.

Yes 2-0 Harry Smith

Seems like some decent subs too. Mullin, Goddard & obviously Smith all came on and contributed. Smith a goal, Goddard with the assist. Comms says shortly before Mullin had a shot blocked too.

2-0 take that. Tricky game on paper. Talking of paper, did someone say clean sheet?

Terrible game of football, could have won 5-2.  Think Goddard deserves a shot next game, he adds some composure out wide.  Gordon looks ok, as does Anderson, Smith probably going to start as well.  The top four of the team is why I still think play offs for us.

Goal on 12 mins, goal 5 mins from the end. Both teams pretty awful in between, but I'll take that. Favourite moment of the afternoon was the bloke behind me who spent all last season shouting  "Get it forward!" or just "Noooo" every time someone tried to start again or retain possession, now bellowing "Don't just lump it Town, keep hold of it". Cracked me up

Less than 3 pages on a match day thread and a sub 6000 attendance at the ground. Apathy is growing...
Standard of football in this division is dire, but a wine's a win. Thought Preston looked a marked improvement on Robertson. Gordon was very impressive, particularly in the first half and Taylor had his best game in a Town shirt.

A wine certainly is a win. I'm having a very smooth Malbec as we speak... I think Taylor is just playing in his more natural position. Certainly prefer him as LB cover instead of relying for CM lynch pin. With Goddard coming back I don't think we should see Taylor in CM again too many times. Preston seems good and Knoyle is seemingly fit but I suppose Flitters doesn't want to unsettle the defence too much? May add pace once he gets involved and i imagine Hussey will be back in contention next week or the game after. Nice to see no cards for us and a clean sheet. Norris probably just a precaution but Smith can do a job when needed.

Not as crap as my last game versus Crawley but still pretty dismal viewing. I thought Lancashire and Preston coped well against a very physical front two and we seemed relatively assured defensively. Midfield won as much as they gave away, needs something else in the middle. Gordon and Anderson look very useful, nothing came off for Norris today and then he dislocated his shoulder lunging into an unnecessary block - terrible luck.

Agree that we probably have enough about us to get promoted but I won’t be rushing back.

Better to watch than last season, and I think Flitcroft has done well to produce a brand new team which seems to have no hint of relegation about it. I liked the way everybody got back behind the ball and were not often exposed.

Played a lot worse than Tuesday night and won.

Not great to watch but fuck me...people have short memories ref the dogshit dished up last season. I stopped going to the last few home game as I just couldn't do it to myself. We competed, it might be shit but we were at the races.

A brand new squad in divvy two will take time to get sorted, Flitters doesn't know what the best starting eleven is, so I'm damn sure we don't....

Nicely placed for a challenge if we're up to it come January.

I think you can add to that can do the 100 metres in less than an hour and doesn't have the turning circle of a battleship. Preston looked alright but Cambridge didn't offer much threat.

Cambridge have the worst strike force I think I've ever seen. Two absolute lumps with little to no ability except for being shithouses.

We had more quality than Cambridge which is why we won. Naff game but this is League Two. Preston had a good debut being up against the aforementioned shit houses.

If anyone remembers, that Ikpeazu used to play for Vale and the 2-2 draw at the CG a couple of seasons ago saw him give one of the dirtiest, cowardly performances I've seen for a while. Thumped Jack Stephens (?) on the back of the head when he wasn't looking and continued to kick lumps out of anyone close enough whilst playing the dying swan act if he got touched.

Was solid, can't really fault him against the lump he was up against. Lancashire did OK too.

Will see how he does against a different type of player, skillful/nippy. Not a dig at him, its just where we have reportedly struggled and I'm hoping he can help combat that.

He did seem to have a decent turn of pace in the few opportunities he had to show it yep. Think he'll be a good signing for us.
