Title: Players names that are also places.
Post by: Reg Smeeton on Monday, September 25, 2017, 18:24:07
New signing to be announced shortly.

Yep good heads up. We can now line up with a CB pair of Preston, Lancashire....  :)  a few years back and could have been Blackburn, Lancashire.  A place with 4000 holes, slightly less than our defence.

Add Gordon Atherton for a "red rose" back four

I remember Gordon as a ginger haired wing half, didn't really settle so far south, you could chuck in Matt Heywood....

Don't forget putting in Garry Nelson in midfield.

Frank Warburton inside left.

I'd stick Garry upfront, he scored at a decent rate for Plymuff and Charlton after leaving us.  Leigh Barnard for me in the mid

Nah we have already got Andy Caton to play up front!

Can Gareth Whalley play? I think we all know the answer to that.

I wanted to say Dave Bamber (Bridge)

Bit of local knowledge there... I seem to remember Andy Caton playing with Paul Ince. Could we do a whole team of historic Lancashire... Tom Heaton in goal

                    Heaton

Blackburn, Preston, Lancashire, Heywood

        Ince, Atherton, Whalley

      Caton, Nelson, Warburton.

I'd like a more recent player than Frank Warburton as I remember all the others.

Michael (Red) Rose on the bench.

Yeah, I know, but he was born in Salford.  :-[

For some reason I always thought that sounded Cornish... maybe to do with his years at Argyle.  Harland sounds Lancs but isn't.

I was about to pick you up there Reginald until I noticed the 'historic'....

On a side note on the photo of Preston with the scarf he’s at a golf course, so assume that’s Highworth. Looks pretty well maintained and the flags are in the holes, is Power using it as his own private golf course?

Here's a puzzler, why should it be that we can find an XI of Lancastrian place names, but next to none for Yorkshire  :hmmm:

We obviously also have a decent chunk of a local XI with Stroud (x2), Comyn-Platt, Walcott if you stretch some level quite a bit...

Charlie Austin (Texas). Also enters the same name as a car category, along with Maurice Owen, but sadly no cake entrants, Unless the current red card chasing James Dunne (dee) qualifies.

Back in the real world, got to include Ray Baverstock and Paul Benson. Austin Berkley should also feature and surely a pairing of Roy Compton and Joey Beauchamp is too good to miss.... Compton Beauchamp. Dick Coates, fits and must be others to go with Keith East besides Alf Dean, East Dean being the Hants side of Sarum. Silly me, that'll be East Knoyle.

Tommy Langford gets in... struggling for a keeper atm

Hay Layne, isn't technically a place, unless you're a pikey

Sorted... Steve Mildenhall  :)

So something like this....

                                                                Mildenhall
                                              Baverstock, Stroud, Comyn-Platt, Berkley
                                                   East,  Knoyle   Compton, Beauchamp
                                                               Hay Layne

Had we fielded an Alton or a Marston, they'd have been in.

A  Sweatie XI may be viable....

Reckon you'd have to expand it to include wider connections like Sammy Burton and Jimmy Glass.

I think the list might be it, but didn't really research it closely just off the top of head stuff.

I seem to recall watching a Swede play for te reserves in the early 00's, but name escapes me for now.

Apparently according to THE Swindon web site we have had players of these European nationalities play for the Town. This list included non EU members and Jersey.

France
Italy
Netherlands
Czech Republic
Malta
Portugal
Spain
Belgium
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
Germany
Hungary
Jersey
Norway
Poland
Slovakia
Cyprus

Not sure if THAT concise but its a decent start.

Enjoy the diversity of the footballing gene pool while it lasts I guess.
Wonder how many of the above would get in under a points system as "skilled professionals".  :)

Next step would be a listing of the countries outside Europe that have been represented in a town shirt.

Of course. Note to self, don't drink and post.
Was thinking more the dual passport holding previously undiscovered mercurial talent on Copacabana, spotted by chance by one of our recruitment think tank when on holiday.

Similarly a rugged Mexican defender, with a liking for hard tackling and yellow cards, so that the TE could wax lyrical about a Dirty Sanchez. Urban dictionary heaven.
