Title: Luton Town vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, September 9, 2017, 08:46:54
Everybody else seems reluctant to start a thread, don't think we will get anything from todays outing TBH, would love to be wrong though.

3-0 defeat.

I'm going. It'll be interesting today to say the least. I'll say a 2 - 1 win to town. 900  Swindon fans in attendance.

I'm at home suffering from tonsillitis, which is fucking agony, but does mean I might have a chance to listen for a change. Is all the online listening still behind pay thingys? Is my best bet just fishing out an old radio from somewhere.

Pre match reluctance to integrate in The White House.

First visit was in Jan 82, FA Cup 3rd round.
They had David Moss, Shakey Jakey in goal plus a young Chalky.
Lost 2-1. Referee Alf Grey did for us that day.
Although town fans did wish Eric Morecambe a speedy recovery with a chorus of "let's all have a heart attack"
Old Bill found it funny.

Remains to be seen if our forwards will cause terror today.
If Flitcroft has microwaved them this week, then we might stand a chance.

Looking forward to going through someone's house to get into the away end.

Looton had a good side back then, loads of internationals and they had the younger brother of the recently departed Steve Aizlewood playing for them that day too, Mark.

A good day out despite the result, Ivor the engine Emmanuel scored for us that day.

And yes its a funny old ground is Kenilworth Road.

Maybe attack is the best form of defence, but that side looks completely unbalanced.

Sheehan, Cuthbert, Collins and Mccormack all starting against us today.

Very attacking set up, could well be a 424 by the look of that line up.

3-4-3 or 4-2-4?

Either way, it hardly addresses the problem of getting overrun in midfield.

Shit or bust, I guess.

Wonder if that is a traditional 4-4-2, doesn't look particularly strong as a 4-3-3.

Purkiss Lancashire Conroy Hussey
....Woolery Elsnik Dunne Mullin....

13/1 Swindon Town to Win to nil. The 4/1 win was a great shout. Think that's worth a pint alone. Reflect what others say, we looked more assured today. Elsnik was everywhere and given licence to create thanks to Dunne. This allowed him to link well with Woolery several times. Great to get the clean sheet. Looked like Vigs actually claimed more and commanded his box a little more. Little by little, so shoots of progress. Team worked harder today. "If" they can convert this away form into just half of it into home form then say it quietly but we could go on a good unbeaten run.  :pint: :pint: :pint: :pint:

I like how Flitcroft always praises fans on a seemingly personal level. I know we don't have to love him but I feel there may be other things going on in his personal life - possibly depression or anxiety based. He seems to speak from the heart and i'm prepared to give him some slack. It's just a hunch btw. Feel free to shout me down if you wish.

In the Wise part season we won our first 6 games, which included first 3 away. Lost the 4th mind.

Good for Flitters to get a reaction today. Notts C are looking good atm, so the mid week game is another difficult fixture.

Sounds an easy thing to do - but it's not quite as simple as that. Look at Exeter last season, hopeless at home and terrific away.

Flitcroft seems to think that turbo charged from the off is the way to go at home.

Title: Re: Luton Town vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Ardiles on Saturday, September 9, 2017, 18:10:45
Late 12pm decision to go today.  Ardiles Jnr Mk I (aged 9) came along as well for only his 2nd away game.  His first was Franchise (A) last December, which doesn't really count.  Bit of an education for him today.  Loved the atmosphere, and the singing.  Lots of new vocab that he knows he's not to repeat at home...but he's old enough to know the drill now.  I enjoyed having him there.

First game of the Flitcroft era for us.  What on earth has been going on for the last two games?!  It was great to see a Swindon side control a game again.  Even before the Cuthbert sending off - which was certainly a turning point - we had the better of the play.

Lots of new faces to get to know.  Hussey - one of them - was my Man of the Match.  Assured performance at the back.  Very composed.  And what a goal!  Woolery was a constant threat.  The key to promotion last time we were in this division under Paolo was having players who were clearly better than the division...and on the basis of what I saw today, Woolery is certainly one of those.

Great to see see & catch up with many of the old London Reds crowd at the game.  Took our foot off the pedal towards the end, much to the annoyance London Reds stalwart Jimmy White who had £1 on at 125/1 for a 4-1 win.  Looked quite possible mid way through the 2nd half.

A great Swindon day out.  The first for quite a while.  Good to be back.  :)

Got a bit lively in there and Wheelwrights by all accounts.

He just clearly wants a piece of that sexy away shirt..

Indeed it is a strangely enticing shirt. I think I may have to buy one.

I've not bought a shirt in 20 yrs.  The last one was the harlequin black & blue away shirt during the McMahon yrs.  I'm getting this one though.

Yeah remember that one, it was Castrol sponsor. Always remember the Club catalogue with Frank Talia, Wayne O' Sullivan & Ty Gooden modelling. Now Ty Gooden, he was a good un!

No it wasn't.... that season we lost our first 10 on the road, and  got relegated.

That season we had 3 consecutive 0-0 draws at the CG, which flanked 5 away games of which 3 were won, either side of a draw and loss at Hull. It's quite possible we've never failed to win at home whilst winning first 3 on the road.

Just when you start sharpening your pitchfork they come up with that. Husseys goal is a thing of beauty. I expected nothing from today. Happy with that.

His first touch was beautiful.
Zindane would have been proud of that one

indeed and especially his final touch

Luton manager described it, ruefully, as a "worldie".

It's easy to applaud the finish but that first touch was indeed excellent. Even if husseys is suspect defensively that left foot is special at this level.

I thought he looked pretty sound defensively yesterday tbf. A couple of over hit corners and a wayward free kick notwithstanding, he was definitely our best player closely followed by Mullin. Also impressed by Conroy who looked rock solid at the back.

I think that result does show how open this league is this season, everyone can easily beat everyone else on their day.

Hopefully we can get another point or 3 Tuesday at Notts County to continue the away form.

Now lets sort out the home form and fast.

Yep, it's all about the consistency. I've said it before this is a top 3 team, sort out the home form and we'll be fine.

Anybody on here go? How did Dunne do in place of Linganzi? Seems as though Elsnik was impressive from what I've read. Did DF mention how far off Knoyle & Goddard are?

I personally thought Elsnik looked rather apprehensive and indecisive but would assume he will improve given time. Wouldn't describe his performance yesterday as impressive - not terrible though. Dunne did OK, not sure what you mean by 'in place of' Linganzi though when they've been playing together.  Don't think kk and jg are too far away from being available.

Very aggressive line-up by DF, with basically a front 4.

How did Conroy play? I've not seen us since pre-season and he looked much better than Robertson, and the home results (the BArnet game in particular) seem to back that up.

Very well i thought. He got stuck in and very defensively aware on saturday.

Must say i though Elsnick despite what others have said looked very good. Bought a  calmness and looked very composed.

Didn't he drop Dunne the last 2 games, thought he looked much better with a ball playing midfielder along side him

I went and thoroughly enjoyed it. First game of the season and it was good to see a Town team with a bit of fight and passion.

I thought that down the left side Hussey and Mullin teamed up really well and seemed to have a good read of each other’s movements and the game as a whole. I didn't quite have the same confidence down the right.  Both Lancashire and Conroy look solid - in fact the back 4 as a whole look well organised and limited Luton to only a handful of half chances - which bearing in mind Luton were joint top scorers in League 2  - was a pretty good (albeit down to 10 men).

Going forward I would I liked to seen Woolery exploit the space the left sending off gave us more and sometimes the decision making was woeful but I am sure that will come. Taylor did nothing apart from one peach of a cross.

Overall, a good day out.

Was there some bother, I only know as a mate linked me to a video from one of those 'away days' groups on Facebook suggesting that Swindon fans attacked Luton in a pub or cafe or something and sarcastically asking if I was involved.

Luton is a bit like Manchester Road, if it was a whole Town.

Decent atmosphere, best of all the games so far this season. Their fans even sang a bit when they were losing.

Yes of course Don, my bad. I think I'd blanked the previous two games from my consciousness... sorry Freddie 😉 I thought he did OK ...ran around a lot, closed men down etc etc...'dogging' as Andy King used to call it. Loved the look of Conroy as well.

Edit: I meant ratting, not dogging 😎

Looks like they will be getting their own back come Boxing Day at the CG.

Mind you Luton do have a bit of a reputation for having some twats following them.
