Title: When the seagulls follow a trawler
Post by: Amir on Sunday, August 27, 2017, 20:01:27
I like the first two Coldplay albums.

I'll click on a mail online link if I'm interested in the subject, but stop short at actually browsing the site.

I don't eat cheese of any kind, except on pizza and it has to be nice and brown.

I support an unsuccessful division 4 football team.

Man don't give a fuck.

Actually a fairly promising thread. Good job. Could be an enjoyable negative karma mine too...

I find both Michael Macintyre and Russell Howard reasonably funny. I suppose it's a bit like the Coldplay thing and they just get hate for overexposure but sometimes you just need some cheap dumb laughs and can't take a Stewart Lee set. Mrs Browns Boys is several steps too far mind.

The Oxford fans I've met have largely been decent chaps and I'd rather talk about football with them than another United fan who couldn't point to Manchester on a map.

With you on both points.

I'm a huge fan of Stew and I really hate the kind of derivative observational comedy McIntyre et al have inspired, but every now and then it's nice to turn your brain off and just laugh at something that doesn't require too much thought. Also, Russell Howard is a really lovely man. He's adapted his act to suit his audience but his early stuff is much funnier, when he was less "omg random."

As for Oxford.. I met one here in Wales and he was lovely. Bristol fans are much worse. And glory hunters are even worse than that.

I'm not gay, but I like old musicals. Calamity Jane and 7 Brides for 7 Brothers being particular favourites.

I even went to the West End to see The King and I with Yul Brynner - not that I went with Yul Brynner but rather he was in it.

This one is pathetic.

I moved house last weekend. We had offers accepted on 2 houses. I told my missus I preferred the one in Wroughton instead of the one in Watchfield . . .

. . . just because I didn't want to live in Oxfordshire. Now we're in, I'm not sure if I like the house or not. Especially after the loft hatch inexplicably fell off in the middle of the night and crashed down the stairs nearly killing the dog!

Likewise, I'll happily listen to Greg James whilst I'm in my van, Scott Mills grates a little. Grimshaw is a bellend.

I used to go to gigs all the time, and kept up with all the new albums of the bands I like, but post-children, I couldn't really give a fuck. Haven't been to see a non-covers band in years, last CD I bought was last year, another year earlier for the previous CD purchase as well.

Which they have.  So much for all the idiots calling for a two tiered test schedule unless they were asking for England to play in the 2nd tier I guess?  We only have two players in our team with a test average over 42 I think, Bairstow being at or around the 40 mark.  For all the talk about some of our players, they simply don't hit the middle of the road scores often enough - it's boom or bust cricket.  The we rely on a couple of bowlers, and even those aren't really world class when you look at averages and not just volume of wickets - we don't have bowlers getting into the low 20's or below.  On our day, pretty good, on plenty of other days, bang average in a Atherton captaincy era sort of way.

You only don't like it because all the women get naked and most of the guys are cockless :)

I get that GoT might not be everyone's cup of tea. Not liking all aspects of your job however! WTF!

I'm lucky in that I do like my job. Most of my clients think the sun shines out of my arse,  it can be very satisfying getting great feedback from jobs, especially on something that's so subjective. If only I could get more work done, I could be more stable financially as well.

I think what you meant to say is - "I don't like Game of Thrones"

Another reason that working in IT sucks: users expect technology to be infallible 24/7. I just went to a client and resolved a problem in 20 minutes and the only thing they asked was why it took me so long and why it went wrong in the first place?

I love my job, I love new technology and building bespoke PC's and repairing PC's and Laptops, yes it frustrates me at times but I enjoy it 99% of the time.

I wouldn't like it so much if I was just fixing workstations or servers all the time that would soon become boring, thats how I started back in 84 when it was the "dark arts of computers" had a 7 year stint as a COBOL, FORTRAN  and FOXPRO programmer and hated it.

I like to be my own boss and work when I like how long I like, I understand that sometimes a job just "pays the bills" but if you don't enjoy it then move jobs to one you do enjoy or work for yourself.

I used to love my job. Worked for a start up and the whole environment was amazing - free food, drinks & beer, PS4's, social events... But then we got taken over by a massive corporation and slowly but surely that's all dying. I like the actual work though - building new software can be quite rewarding.

I hated working permanent so aged 25 decided to become a contractor on a ltd company basis.

Now go from company to company every 9-18 months work on different projects in a variety of industry and expand my knowledge base whilst continually looking for fresh challenges.

Oh and yes the tax benefits are delicious!

I don't know what Game of Thrones is.... beyond it being a thing.  I suppose I don't want to know.

However, a couple of times recently, I've come across the phrase " it's a zero sum game"  Now I've tried to figure this out, without success, anyone help  :hmmm:

As for work, a good idea as long as you don't let it steal your soul.

We all make rules for ourselves. It's these rules that help define who we are. So when we break those rules we risk losing ourselves and becoming something unknown.

A zero sum game is one where the winner can only win if someone else loses and the wins and losses add up to zero. ie Poker. If you win the pot of £30 you are taking £30 from the other players, ie the wins and losses are equalised.

I also work in IT and I fucking LOVE it.

Chubbs. I have the CCNA 1 and 2 books and the CCNA Security (Cisco ASA) manual if you want to borrow them. And also shitloads of study guides and cheat sheets that you may find useful. PM me your email address and I'll send you the study guides. The books are actual physical books if you want to borrow them? Also sign up to the Cisco Learning Network, there are free courses and test exam papers available.

Anything specific you need help with, just ask.

Cheers.  But why don't you have to contribute to the pot. It seems a funny game whereby you don't have to put in then clean out the others who have. A metaphor for neoliberal capitalism perhaps.

Joining this forum is a lot like being a young keeper, on loan at a lower league team with a leaky defence. If you can handle the initial barrage, you'll come out stronger on the other side.

I worded the example badly, of course you do contribute to the pot but no one can win more than is put in. Hence zero sum.

It's the end users that annoy me. There's no appreciation. People expect 24/7 support.

It's a thankless job.

With commitments, it's very difficult just to change career on a similar salary.

This. Worked in hardware & software support for many years.
Both internal & external support. Lack of appreciation was appalling on both fronts.

Just got fed up in the end of copping the flack that should have been going the way of cowboy sales departments and untouchable development teams.

Quite.
At last company an email went round to the support team on how to read the body language of a particular developer prior to approaching him.

That was the final straw for me.
Just get him a mini set of desktop traffic lights.
To cap it all he also had a ponytail.

That's good.
Software development & support should be interlinked & not separate and competing departments.

The alternative would be for developers to also front line support their own software.

Yeah we work closely with our support, which does make for a much smoother process. You do get some devs, unfortunately, who refuse to accept change and live in the 'dark ages'. Questioning their code is like telling them you're gonna murder their family.

House Walsingham  at St Joe's, we were crap.

Remember being lined up and castigated, along with 2 or 3 others for refusing to be prefect's.

Speaking of standing up to "authority", hope you are well prepared for the alternative Kim Jong-un "Fire & Fury" tour of North America. Tickets on sale soon.  :)

I work in this area and the majority of hardware/software devs I meet are like that. Also best not to get them to Frontline support their own code. They typically don't have the... 'ahem'... patience for that...

Once had a dev swear down to me there was nothing wrong and then went behind my back to the MD suggesting we replace a full set of virtual hosts because they were "obviously faulty." Turns out he'd left a bracket open in his code...

Of course there are exceptions. But theres a certain mentality of 'just buy a new one' that really gets on my tits at times.

Several reasons

1) A bit late in life to make that change, hoping to retire in a couple of years.
2) I don't dislike my job, (it's more of a management role now), but find computers dull.
3) I work for a pretty decent company and really like the people I work with

Some people get very protective over their code don't they. if* someone can improve mine, go ahead .

* no question, three they can!
