Title: Mobile broadband
Post by: The Artist Formerly Known as Audrey on Monday, June 19, 2017, 09:19:15
Moving home and looking to ditch Sky and stream all my TV content. New place has very slow broadband - 7.9mb - so looking at mobile.

Any idea what sort of data usage I would need if I streamed everything.

One hour of netflix is probably what 500mb

Two hours a day * 30 days = 30gb

+ other usage.

Lots.

Have a  look into 4g home broadband. Same technologu as a mobile but you get a dish/aerial on your house.

use https://availability.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

it will tell you what broadband options you have available in your area, e.g. if you can get Fibre, it will be much cheaper and easier than a mobile broadband. MB should only be a last resort imho.

Looks like the only options available in Watchfield are Sky, BT or TalkTalk.

Home broadband looks good but struggling to find an economic unlimited data usage deal.

Could be stuck with Sky  :(

Watchfield, as in Watchfield next to Shrivenham?

Unusual, as they have had their exchanges upgrade to fibre recently.

That's the one. I entered the postcode to see what's available and only got those 3 options

According to my search of Sn6 8tQ which is in watchfield, you have access to BT FTTC which is fibre broadband which will give you a minimum of 30mb internet depending on the package you get.

Ha ha ha ha. So they claim. We had BT FTTC, got 12-14 on a good day, was usually below 10, frequently below 5. Fucking useless.

I have had FTTC since it came out and never had any issues, 30+ every day without fail but guess depends on how far you are from the exchange. I run on wifi on the 30+ package and get 25mb, if I plug into the router then get the 30

The Mrs has non-fibre Talk Talk broadband and it's abysmal. Thankfully I've finally managed to persuade her to get Virgin broadband after year of whinging.

But back to my original point, if Talk Talk's non-fibre option is anything to go by, I'd avoid them like the plague.

Lovely. Everyone likes a smug twat :)

(and yes it does depend on how far you are from the exchange - so definitely check that, if your cab is more than a mile or so from the exchange, don't touch BT FTTC with a bargepole. And definitely don't rely on their "You should get x speed" quotes, I think they just stick a pin in a speed chart to come up with those)

I have non fibre Talk Talk and can confirm it is absolute garbage.

We are on BT fibre and even out in the countryside we never see less than 70mb speeds, I have had nothing but good service from BT, seems I could be almost alone in this though.

Same here, get to the top speed with no issues ever on FTTC, we run a lot of devices (phones, pc's, laptops) and never get any slowdown or issues. I just checked I am getting 37mb on wifi on the 76mb package and that will be down to my pc not having the fastest wifi card.

[pedant]
It really doesn't matter how far the cabinet is to the exchange, unless the speed of light isn't quick enough for you :)
[/pedant]

Copper distance/quality from your house to the cabinet on the other hand..
Oh and congestion...

Lovely. Everyone likes a smug twat :)

Not being smug at all, smug is being on Virgin and telling everyone you are getting 100 / 150 / 200 speeds.

distance to the exchange makes little distance now, as Batch said it's more to do with the line to the house and the equipment in your house

OK, was told by one of the many engineers that came out that our cabinet was too far from the exchange. But then given that everyone from BT/OpenReach lied and lied again over the course of two months of failing to fix the issue, I'm happy to accept that was one of many things we were told that wasn't true. Terrible terrible service, only thing worse was the "support".

Used to have 100mb, went down to 50mb when I moved. It's plenty fast enough.

I have a cheapo 8mb adsl line at home with plusnet. Surprisingly not that bad at all. The cashback on top basically made it £80 for the year, albeit paid upfront. We watch Netflix every night pretty much and I use a VPN to remote to work if I'm ill and barring the usual Saturday night slowdown it's been more than acceptable. Plus net's customer support are spot on too. Probably the best isp out of a bad bunch.

plusnet are a BT company.

guess their support is better than the parent though

BT bought them but didn't change their support which is all based in Sheffield apart from it's not 24/7 now only 7am-10pm

It's BT but cheaper and with limits on your downloads while BT doesn't limit (as far as I remember).

I used to be on plusnet. They charged me £50ish to leave. Wasn't in a contract but is part of their T&C's.

to be fair BT support has actually been very good when we have needed them, every year when our line has a brain fart..

it's going again now, think the cabling is degrading one twisted pair at a time.. :(

Ditto, we moved in and our line was poor (<1mb on ADSL), they came out on a Saturday morning (with 48 hours notice) and replaced the copper line and instantly was getting 13mb. Not had any issues since.

Been with BT for the last 15 years or so and very rare to get any issues except getting support to understand sometimes, One thing that works for me is to get put through to the fault line which is in Scotland, they normally are happy to help and marginally better to understand  :D

Countering that, BT support were dreadful when we had problems with our broadband last summer. Consistently failed to call back when they said they would, lied about what they'd done/said they'd do, failed to book engineers to come out and then lied about that as well, sent engineers out to wrong place, sent engineers out without having ordered the part the engineer needed to do the repair (and lied about that), they were consistently utterly terrible over a period of nearly 2 months. I've never experienced customer service that bad in any sector, really really awful. It was why we left in the end.
