Title: Fleetwood Town v Swindon Town Matchday Thread
Post by: FormerlyPlymRed on Saturday, April 1, 2017, 07:00:05
Well it's 8am and no-one else has done one yet. I've got a rare Saturday off and made the last minute call to head up to Fleetwood. Fuck knows why. 10 hour round trip.

Think we will lose 2-0. COYR

Only 2? 😂

On a serious note i think well get some sort of result but others will go against us.

Almost given up attempting a prediction as I am always wrong - a win would be better than good and might instill some hope but then I wake up and remember this is Swindon we are talking about 2-0 or just maybe 0-1 ( please ) - pure torture this season has become

We don't often win at these places when we are good, let alone when we're not.

I'd like to think the players will give it a go so think we will lose by the odd goal

I had the same thought. He posted at 7:22 on the Trust thread.... so may be in transit. WB's capture of the pre match away day flavour, has been a highlight of the season. Certainly better than the shit served up by Williams and his charges.

Pre match recovery, in The Thomas Drummond, from menthol overdose after going by the Fisherman's Friend factory.

Our survival chances might be slimmer than a Syd Little joke book, but hope that the team at least give it a go. There is nothing to lose.

It's about time someone put these cod bothering upstarts in their place.
Don't think that it will be our lot that does it.

Hopefully the upcoming ring sting from the large KFC zinger burger will not be the highlight of the day.

I had hoped for a Lofthouse reference.   Apparently FF is worth £250 mill in global exports. The family intend to turn the company into a Trust when the current last of the line pass, so that profits can be put to community use.

Strawberry Garden. Went there on first visit here. Good pub.
Judging by his efforts on Masterchef it's Mrs Syd who is the brains behind the catering.

Been there many times a lovely pub with good food and great beers, Camra pub of the year a few years back.

Syd is a great friendly bloke but he only does front of house now, meet and greet stuff, usually on a Friday and Saturday at its busiest times.

Not much in it, they don't look brilliant at all. Easily winnable in the 2nd half. We've got in behind a few times, speed it up a bit and we will cause more trouble.

Not bad so far. Need a goal

I know one player doesn't make a team but since Conroy has come in we appear to be much better at the back.

Vigs - Conroy - Ince - Ajose appears to be the spine of this current good form.

Fair play to Williams and the players. Have we hit form just at the right time?

Fuck this we are better than Shrews and Gills for sure. I know we've all been pretty much consigned to defeat/league 2 for a while but no. Come on Town. Forget your grudges, forget who you hate, forget the off field stuff (whatever that is), now is the time to really get behind the team and grind those wins out. The short is, we keep grinding these wins, we stay up.

ESSS TEEE EFFF SEEE! SA-WIN-DON!

Thought today might be the one where it finally looks mission impossible. Instead we are now within reach of 4 or five clubs with 15 to play for.

Have to hand it to the boys and Williams. What a fantastic time to string a couple of wins together.

Title: Re: Fleetwood Town v Swindon Town Matchday Thread

Williams:
- Contrast to last 10 mins v Bradford
- Hopefully will stay with players for rest of career
- Don't like the fact that we have a team that plays so narrow but its what we needed
- Tried to keep it tight. Set team up for cagey first half
- At half time felt game plan had gone well
- Longer game went on Fleetwood got nervous
- At 0-0 for us it wouldnt have been the end of the world for us, but it was for them, which is why Fleetwood got more nervy than us
- Ajose makes good decisions in the box.
- Desire from players to put body on line and make tackles was good.
- Then Dabo & Colkett slowing things down was fantastic
- Matters a lot that we are within 3 points
- If we do our job next weekend it can only do us good
- Always try to come up with game plan to win game.
- Not too much pattern to the type of teams we have won against or lost to
- Fleetwood difficult to play against. Very well drilled.
- Came as a shock to people that Rossler is managing in league 1
- Pitch is tight and they know how to use that
- Goddard was outstanding from top of diamond drifting wide. Ran himself into the ground
- Barry bruised top of foot with block tackle
- Focussed on the next game for last 2 weeks. Must continue in that way.

Midway through the second it sounded like we were the ones likely to score. Didn't think it would actually happen though. Great reward for the +300 nut cases that made the journey up there. Fair play.

I don't think it matters so much what the others do now.... we're still playing catch up, so only wins will do. If that happens then it will take care of itself.

Have arranged to meet a few old work colleagues for Charlton, make a weekend of it in the smoke. Would love it if it all went down to the wire, because although they won't allow Ajose to play they are on free fall and w could COULD just do this. Just got home.

Main thing is the 3 points, but the performance was good as well, especially 2nd half.
Nobody stood out, played some nice controlled football without the mistakes.

Just a mention for Dabo, played with a lot of confidence and back to the standard set when he joined.

Good turnout and great support.
Vodka time!

I know I'm basing this on Sky's highlights package, where the adverts are longer than the action, but:

Is it just me, or did we restrict them to half chances and long shots?

Also, at the other end, there was a missed sitter and a more than decent penalty shout?

On another day, could that have been 3-0?

The radio said the same, should have put 1/2 away, lucky defending and poor finishing didn't help

Couldn't really give a fuck about the performance, the win is everything. Would take a dicking for 89 mins and fluke one in.

This would make me happy.

I disagree, I think all 5 are very winable with the right attitude and commitment of the players.

Even Scunny are on a poor run of just 2 wins in 13 games with them having lost 8 of those.

The other 4 games are against low/mid table teams.

Yesterday was a fantastic performance, especially 2nd half. They edged the first and possibly should have been ahead when their striker got through 1v1 but skewed his shot wide thankfully.

2nd half we were more composed, had a bit more attacking intent and scored a deserved winner.

No-one had a bad game yesterday, the back 4 looked solid (impressed with Conroy on my first viewing). Midfield 4 worked hard, got stuck in and played some good stuff as well. Obika and Ajose were a handful throughout. Gladwin made a big impact when he came on and played very well.

All in all, an excellent away day and great support by the 330odd especially on the 2nd half.

glad to hear about Gladwin, he's been proper rubbish recently so if he's finding form at last then it's another string in the relegation fight bow...

playing middle of the table teams worries me a bit.. no pressure on them, we relax a bit... no batch, to soon, leave it until Saturday...

Definitely.

Especially after we won back to back games only a month ago and then lost to an absolute dog shite Chesterfield.

There's no point even looking at the table. Just win the game and move on to the next.

Oldham's next 2 games - Fleetwood and Bolton (home)
Gillingham's next 2, also both at home - Millwall and Rovers
Shrews next 2, again, both at home - Millwall (midweek) and Rochdale

Neither LP nor tiger Tim were at Fleetwood. The team played well with Fleetwood probably shading the first half with the better chances although at no time were we dominated or really under the cosh. Second half we grew into the game and were the dominant side. Ajose took his goal well and the whole team played well. Very impressed with Conroy. He is the central defender that we've wanted for a couple of seasons and in my view Branco looks more assured with him alongside. All in all, a great day out!

Interesting how people have different views of games etc.

The BBC report says that Fleetwood were the better side first half and for most of the second half and that we frustrated Fleetwood until just before we scored when we had a few shots and came out winners.

Looking at the stats it would seem a fairly even game, with us shading possession, both sides having 3 shots each on target and we shaded corner count.  Probably the local BBC radio reporter, who like Hodgetts is a bit of a muppet!

As others have said, remarkable result, and one we deserved. Trying hard not to look beyond Saturday, but even the idea we could be out of the drop zone come 5pm is amazing considering how low we all were after the four straight defeats.

Second half we were by some distance the better team. Unlucky not to go ahead earlier, and most impressively, after the goal, we didn't look like conceding.

Must be said, Fleetwood is a cracking little club and day out. Stewards, bar staff and everyone we met were brilliant considering there were 20 odd of us on my stag do, including me in full oxford kit for the day.

They brought a young lad in from Palace who scored a few in his first few games but hasn't since.

Agree about the belief thing, have to keep looking at the table and remind myself that we are still 3 points from safety. And I can't remember ever playing well against MK at home, we've won 3 out of 9 home meetings against them. That usually grounds me..

Yes understand that, but we too have the nerves against us coupled with the fact were not having a great season.
Those teams above us may only have pride or a new contact to play for but they would also love to add a nail in the coffin.
Recently we have failed to beat sides worse than ourselves but beaten sides (over the course of the season) better than us.
Its not totally in our hands as we still rely on other results going our way and have to beat Charlton on the final Saturday. The way the league its panning out that will no doubt decide one of the places in league 2 come August.
Luckily Gills i think play Shrews so one of those will drop points but we can do this, nail biting i know but what a way to end the season potentially 7 sides trying to avoid the drop. That's why i love football.

Don't over think it! If it's in our own hands last day, I'll be delighted (and would 100% back us to get something at Charlton).

Table looks fun - Charlton in terrible form and can't see where they're going to get the 4 point they need. Gills look in all kinds of trouble and have 3 of the top 8 in their run in, as have Oldham. Port Vale have, by some distance, the hardest run in. Only 2 at home, against Sheff Utd and Bolton, plus Fleetwood away last day too.

Still think us staying up is unlikely, but can see the bottom 4 being Cov, Chesterfield, Vale and Gills.

I can honestly say I'd rather be playing each of the top 6 than the sides we have to play. We've beaten 2nd and 3rd away from home, 4th at home and got a decent home point against 6th in the last few months.

Eh?  Of course it's in our hands, if we win our games we stay up if we lose we go down.... matters nought what anybody else does. The Franchise game is very difficult.... they have our number and are decent on the road.

It's their poor home form which saw them briefly struggle.

You only have to go back to 05/06, to find a must win home game v Franchise with 5 to play... we were on 43, a point better off than at present, Franchise were rock bottom, a poor side doomed to join us in Div 4.

A truly awful game, we didn't manage a shot on target they may have had 1, which was that lump Clive Platt slotting it in.

Franchise had the turncoat Dean Lewington playing for them... he still does

the thing about those fighting for promotion/playoffs is the do attack you as draws may not be enough for them either. so we get space that suits the likes of Colkett. They are also relatively good, so there is a danger of a tonking.

The bottom teams, they play it tight away and pack men behind the ball and hope to counter. Worked for Chesterfuckingfield.

middle tablers are either released of pressure and play well, or on the beach.

in short, haven't got a fucking clue what's going to happen. But it's much more about how we react, not other teams. But worried about our recent history of cracking.. still, we have momentum..

still, we have momentum..

So does Jeremy Corbyn... and I think he's doomed for the drop as well  :(

Shakes had a shot on target... While one on one. Platt scored not long after

Ah the one on one, I think everyone just knew that he wasn't going to score.

For goodness sake he had the Ricky Ricky Shakes.

I think Tails' memory is starting to fade with age...

The following week, Shakes was handed a golden opportunity to score again in a crucial relegation battle with Franchise - having been put clean through, one-on-one with the Dons' keeper, Shakes dragged a tame shot wide of the post -

I'm glad that Ricky is still earning a living from football... seems a decent sort of chap.   :hmmm:

Pretty sure that was the game DMR went down by the players tunnel after the game and almost had a scrap with that ginger cunt Lewington...

I can honestly say I'd rather be playing each of the top 6 than the sides we have to play. We've beaten 2nd and 3rd away from home, 4th at home and got a decent home point against 6th in the last few months.

We seem to be shit against other shit teams

There's a clutch of clubs, 7 in all who you could argue aren't going to involved in auto, PO's or the relegation battle. So from 8th to 15th, Franchise are in this band....we've yet to beat any of them this season  :(

Precisely. Add to this the ticket deals, a renewed sense of optimism...

I've supported STFC long enough to know this is a recipe for disaster

@swindonadver banned by @Official_STFC from giving 5,000 red balloons to fans tomorrow over 'health and safety'. How come #oufc managed it?

What on earth is so unhealthy or unsafe about a load of balloons? Fucking stupid club.

It will be all those dangerous sharp edges you get on balloons, most likely.

Someone said (not sure how serious) that it is a choking hazard to children. Although surely the shite that passes for food at STFC is a choking hazard to children, yet i'm pretty sure they won't be stopping the sale of hot dogs etc.

Sometimes you have to wonder about Swindon Town, 5k red balloons would be brilliant on a day that we need the fans to be right behind the side.

TBF if they've only just asked permission they've left it a bit late, this is as likely to be the Adver coming up with something they've not thought through at the last minute and trying to blame the club/SAG/anyone for their half-arsed lack of organisation

Way more likely to be this. Also - fan giveaways are shit anyway. I'd ban them too.

Some areas? So there are still some areas that are deemed high risk in relation to balloonular* activities? The mind boggles

* not a real word

To be fair, if any kids are like our little lass balloons are like heroin to them, add in steep terracing and she would injure herself chasing the fucking things about. I spend my life dodging balloons round the house and losing the bloody things out the front door when the postman knocks!

Maybe Mex and TalkTalk could get the cardboard cutouts on the Bank to look after the dangerous balloons.

Club probably banned the balloons on the basis that Ormonde-Ottewill will be in the vicinity.
