Title: TEF wake for whits
Post by: mexico red on Thursday, March 23, 2017, 13:03:46
In light of the abysmal news about whits, it made me think that quite a few of us haven't seen each other in a while and wouldn't it be grand to hook up and raise a glass to the big man.

I suggest midday at the merlin on April 8th before the dons game. You don't obviously have to go to the match but think it would be good to all hook up again and raise a glass to whits. What do you all think?

I intend to go Donkey, I only met him a couple of times in person. Way I see it is this is the TEF wake, so not an intrusion into personal family stuff, and its paying respect to someone whose involvement in this site has played a big part in my football supporting life for the last too many years.
--
Am I right in thinking Whits used to sort the hosting for this site?
--
Also those that knew him far better, is there any family direction on donations to any given charities?

He did sort hosting for a while, think he chipped in half for a bit and the rest came from donations. I seem to recall it cost a fair bit to him personally!

Will be there on the 8th

I can't come for obvious reasons. I've also not met Whits personally but he always struck me as a kind and whitty (sic) person.

My contribution to his memory is to suggest we name a TEF board after him. From what I've read, the "away days" board might be the most appropriate? That's a decision best left to those closer to him though, of course.

Title: Re: TEF wake for whits
Post by: herthab on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, 04:07:59
I'm not going to pretend I was a close personal friend of Whits, because I wasn't. I did spend spend a few away days in his company, so for me, renaming the away day board after him is a great idea.

I've only just seen this, really feel for his family having lost someone so young.

He always came across as one of the good guys. I'm sure those that knew him will honour his memory well.

Title: Re: TEF wake for whits
Post by: Peter Venkman on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, 07:16:50
Unfortunately I have other prior appointments or I would have popped along, I think the naming of the away days board would be excellent.

Spoke to Whits a couple of times about his illness as we both started treatment for cancer at a similar time, had no idea he had gone downhill so quickly as I thought he was over the worst.

Same as a few on here, will never say he was the closest friend but i knew him well. He was a top lad and always smiling. I will be there Saturday so see you all there. I think getting a flag with Whits on Tour to take up permanent residence at the CG could also be a good idea if anyone fancies chipping in.

I'll see if I can get hold of the original flag, I'm sure he kept hold of it. Renaming the away day section is a top idea.

I'm not sure about donations and suchlike (someone mentioned earlier), but I'll find out at the funeral and let you know.

Not been on here for a while. Like others I knew Whits from following us. He was always cheerful, and ready with a quip, we didn't even know each other's real names, I'd walk into Legends bar, or a grotty northern pub, and hear, Oi, sutton. Being a fellow Newbury born supporter, we sometimes talked crap about our hometown, which was fun. RIP Whits, it's made me sad to read this bad news.

Well thanks for that Ian. I mean that honestly.

So he has been dead for over two weeks now and you cliquey cunts decide that you should let everybody else who also liked the man a lot know?

I despair

Goodbye Whits, my best memory was of you on the way to some godforsaken League 2 match on the train, I think it was with Blackcurrant ++

Should try and do it more often, if not then I hope everyone is and remains happy and healthy.

Nice to meet some new faces, see some old and see Batch again for the second time... First time being in 1997.

We need a name chart. Recognise tans and herthab. Is Jayo wearing the turtle tee?

Ha. It's strange because you get an image of a poster over the years. Good on you all. I've sat next to DV before, and Mex use to be about 20 seats to my left in the DRS when I had season tickets.

You'd have to have a good imagination to make those images up!!  :D

Good to see some "old faces". Can't believe it's been around 10 years plus since we all used to meet up in The Merlin pre match. Anyway today was about Whits. Good TEF sent off. RIP Whits

Some right rogues in that lot. I have images of Kaiser Souse running through my head. Mex has more hair, Drs more tattoos, and Ginginho less alcohol since the last time I saw them. Hertha has the same amount of hair to be fair.

Fucking hell some of you haven't aged well...

The only ones who haven't changed are Herthab and Fred.

Yeah, I'm lucky to have kept my youthful good looks....

Was great to see so many faces from the past and some I didn't know that well also. Looking forward to our dirty norvern away trip next season!

I dunno, a few grey hairs but I wouldn't say I've changed that much...but...that is well open to opinion. I'd say bar Sandy Gray most are as I remembered them, to be honest.

The cat still has his lightening quick reflexes avoiding tripping hazards.

Funeral was yesterday. Huge turn out, standing room only, and a lot of weepy bearded men getting royally bladdered until 4am - he'd have approved. They were taking donations for https://www.rosemaryappeal.org/ if anyone wanted to throw some cash their way.

Thanks

Can we get herthab to fall asleep in the pub, for old times' sake?

Apologies for not knowing but is that Whits?

I think I used to sit behind that dude in the DRS back in the Simon Cox days.

Having read through and seen it confirmed, he and the guys he sat with were proper funny guys, always saw him around at any away game I went to as well.

Condolences to his nearest and dearest.

You look a lot like Reece Shearsmith, of League of Gentlemen and Inside No 9 fame, in that pic. Albeit in one of his camper poses.

Loved the line up pic. Sorry I couldn't be there. I'd forgotten how much I miss all your faces, but now I'll never see that Whits grin live again.

You are all fucking brilliant.

So, it’s over a year on...

Well out of the TEF loop (...and football in general)
Just wondering if there were any plans / interest in arranging another gathering like last year, so we can have a catch up, reminisce and raise a drink to the big fella who for most of us started the social aspect of the TEF.
