Title: Swindon vs Gillingham matchday thread
Post by: tans on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, 07:05:30
1-1 Draw.

Anyone know why JET was called back to QPR? Is he injured or something

only that recall was agreed following the change in manager.. most odd.

2-2

edit: had a quick look on the pikeynet  forum, missed the the discussing his recall but did find one they had been discussing JET in saying he was lazy.

presume the manager sent him back for lack of effort/attitude then.. his goal ratio looked ok to me.

Gills are now on a run of just 1 defeat in the last 8 games, ironically that was away at Coventry. Although they have only win once in that run with 6 draws in their last game vs Southend.

I will be happy with a draw to keep building up a run ourselves.

We havent beaten them for 9 games home and away with 4 draws and 4 defeats in that run.

At the CG they are unbeaten in the last 3 games with 2 wins and a draw but going back a bit further over the last 20 games they have only beaten us 3 times in 20 games with with us winning 11 times, 6 draws and just 3 defeats.

Good mates with a Gills fan who claims they have been absolute dog shit recently. Hopefully our lads have a bit of confidence from Saturday and get the job done.

Feel the power of positivity building up again to guide us to victory.

2-1 Ajose Town End double. Ince to dominate the midfield.

Post by: Panda Paws on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, 10:41:24
Praying Jones is fit and we retain the back 4. If so, and Ince is fit enough to perform for 90 mins - if so backing the home win, 2-1.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a change or 2 following Saturday on a mud pile - Goddard for Brophy maybe.

Title: Re: Swindon vs Gillingham matchday thread
Post by: Batch on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, 10:44:56
think that change would be a mistake as brophy has offered pace that worries a dodgy defence

Isn't it typical that we have a game so soon after a decent win....therefore can't enjoy it for the full week. I suppose strange things do sometimes happen, but we haven't won back to back all season, so seems little logical reason why it should change now.

In the early part of the season, Embers was lamenting the difficulty in playing 2 games in a week, so that when we got down to one by being knocked out of the cups early doors, and the fixture list taking winter into account...he suggested things should improve...we got worse.

We had an unchanged side for 2 games in a row, I daresay this game coming so soon after Saturday will see 1 or 2 out injured.

At least the whole false rivalry thing with the Gills has been binned off.

if we don't win tonight then that will be 3 consecutive (completely in season) calendar months without a home win.  Not sure when we last did that, not even in 93/94. Fifties I'd have thought.

Interesting  :hmmm:

Are you sure we didn't do it last year?

We only managed 2 months last year.... the answer is 10/11, which along with 55/56 is generally regarded as two of the worse Div 3 seasons.

That year we didn't muster a home win from Jan-April  12 games of the utmost ineptitude.  This side has the potential to emulate.

Utter toss of a defender. Unbelievable the amount of time he gets lucky by usually being suspended after another raft of yellows, and one of the back four then gets injured. To think he once turned down a contract offer. If only.

We started well then gift them a goal thanks to complete fuckwittery from Branco. We've since carried on peppering them, so this isn't done yet.

High foot in the area is an indirect free kick I believe

Apart from when Ifil did it against Hartlepool and they were awarded a penalty, scored and won 1-0

Hockaday:
- Best player for Gills was keeper
- Solid spine
- Ajose & Obika are a good combination to watch
- Two games and 2 comfortable wins
- Players coming to the fore and looking strong
- Two weeks ago it looked bleak. It looks better now.
- Commented on group huddle on the pitch at the end of the game
- Rodgers only one not in huddle. Whether that tells a story I dont know

Hockaday:
- Chemistry right between Obika and Ajose
- Brilliant strike by Obika
- Didnt feel that Swindon would throw it away
- Gills poorest team he's seen
- Swindon more creative from set plays
- New system. Good
- Thompson should be in Championship at fullback or centre half
- The lad can play anywhere
- Long may he stay at Swindon

Just keep on winning and we'll drag other clubs into the mire with Northampton. Psychologically speaking clubs around us will have taken note that we now have six from six with six scored and two conceded. We've not had a purple patch this season and every team has one as well as a wobbly one, it's fair to say our wobbly one has lasted longer than normal.

Gills were utter dogshit. My left bollock with a smiley face could've given that team talk at half time to get a result.

Thank fuck we delivered. Shame about all the other results, but at least we're getting a bit of momentum together.

Gills on that showing will be sliding into the drop zone too. Just need to drag as many as we can down there to make it a real bun fight for survival.  :beers:

Williams
- We've got enough time to do this. If we stay focus and work everyday
- Time in season when we hadnt won and couldnt claw things back
- Feels more like last season when we came from beind
- Feel like we offer a threat all the time
- 1-0 HT. Tried to convince them that if performance remained good we would score 2 or 3
- Crowd have taken to Ince. He was something we were crying out for
- Hes really taken to the role which is different to what he had at Brighton
- Obika goal showed quality. Ball to him was superb. Obika travels with ball well. Either he or Ajose were going to score
- Branco slow to start in the game but will be better for scoring. Told him at 1/2 time that he needed to be more involved in the game and stronger. You could hear him shouting at others in the second half. Showing more aggression
- Players need to do more. The have improved in last 3 games. Need more people to step up.
- Hope that we can keep the bar raised
- Chesterfield: How much pressure? Big pressure on both teams. Will come down to who manages it the best.
- Some bullshit about belief

every cloud. I'll take town winning regardless of others. If we go on a run we will stay up. Even though they have games in hand Port Vale looked doomed with Chesterfield and Coventry. So its a fight to escape 1 place between about 6 teams. Shrews, Northampton, Bury Gills, Oldham, and us. I'm going to put it out there and say Shrews, Bury and Oldham will be safe as they are picking up more points currently. Northampton and Gills have poor records in last 10. Our record is on the turn (I hope) So realistically looking at 3 teams fighting to stay up Northampton, Gills and ourselves. If our form stays true along with Northampton and Gills I's say it'll be Gills for the chop, with Northampton 20th and ourselves 19th.

Projection yes, but that's my call.

Fair fucking play.

At half time Barry and Boo were non-league,  Branco was having a shit game, we were 1-0 down to their only shot, we'd missed a load of good chances and wasted having the wind in our backs.

But we didn't crumble against an admittedly shit Gillingham. We stuck at it. And we scored. And we scored again and Branco made amends with a great header after clearly discussing it beforehand.

Rohan Ince is a fucking beast. Head and shoulders above any other midfielder, he sticks out like a sore thumb. He's too good for us. He gets the ball, he gives the ball.  He looses the ball, he gets the ball, the gives the ball.

The late goals for our rivals has taken the wind out my sails. But we can only win our games and hang on in there.

Onto the next must win.

Colkett gladwin boo Barry were crap. Beeks wasn't very good but good goal. Ince is a fucking beast. Thompson was excellent. Branco was branco. Fuck up for the goal then pops up with a goal. If we had a fit Obika, Ajose and Ince all season we would be nowhere near where we are now, completely transform the team once they get going which is a bit frustrating. Hopefully the penny has dropped that you need a player like Ince in the team as well as tippy tappy fairies, the guy is a man mountain. Also now we have Obika and Ajose back in we are suddenly putting crosses in again and unsurprisingly creating chances.....not rocket science.

Has it taken too long for us to come up with the right set up this season, only time will tell I guess.

That's the first game I've enjoyed at the County Ground for a long time. Gillingham were poor, but credit to the team for not letting their heads go down when they went behind and turning it around.

Ince deservedly MOM, absolute brilliant. On the rare occasion he lost a tackle or misplaced a pass, he battled on and invariably got it back. If only we'd had him from the start of the season.

Thompson and Ajose were also excellent.  Hopefully the momentum carries on to Saturday.

Truly dominant performance from start to finish.

Williams impressed me with his interview when he said he had strong words with Branco at half time and that he needed to stop walking his way through the game, to command and fight for every ball. Then he ruined it right at the end by saying he's been fantastic all season.  :girlgiggle:

Loved the piss taking from Goddard and gladwin. Saw a few people say bad comments about gladwin tonight, however for a make shift winger some of the balls he put in were outstanding (admittedly a lot were terrible) BUT his set play defending was superb. That was all gillingham had to throw at us danger wise and he headed away countless times.

Ref- whilst frustrating with many bad decisions kept seeing the funny side at gillingham complaining about time wasting, they were at it from minute 1 before losing. Should have sent that bloke off after he final whistle though, had proper patience.

Pleased I went tonight

A must win game which we did win very comfortably.  The only downside for me was the way one or two people strolled through the game - Gladwin in particular but I will excuse him as he was playing in an alien position, he is not a player for wide positions!  Branco awful in the first half and his - coupled with Barry being beaten far too easily as his man turned him on the edge of our box - mistake obviously led to their goal, their only meaningful attack in all of the first half!  To both of their credit they improved a lot in the second half!  It is a pity we have too many loan players as I though Dabo was looking good down the right and his pace and defensive qualities added something to our game.  Thought we lost a bit when Obika was taken off, he is happy to offer the physical side up front which Norris doesn't - would have loved for Norris to have scored against his old team (always seem to happen against is!).  On to Saturday and another 6-pointer.

Barry was absolute dogshite in the first half, total passenger for 45 minutes. Didn't think, as a team, we played badly in the first half. The heather sellers were very lucky to go in a goal up, but after the number of chances we had I was resigned to it being 'one of those nights'. 2nd half we seemed to step up a gear and totally deserved all 3 points. As well as Ince performed personally, he also allows players like Colkett to play to their strengths. The midfield is so much more balanced with him in it.

Lets hope Chesterfield are as poor as Cov and Gillingham, but you can only beat whats in front of you and we frequently haven't this season beaten teams just as bad as those 2. As everyone has said finally having a midfield enforcer and some strikers who can finish  makes a massive difference (Not that I was saying that in the first half mind when Obika brilliantly turned his man and then fired weakly straight at their keeper when a shot to either corner would have been a certain equaliser)

Barry has been pretty good since his return but he was absolutely dire in the first half. If Dabo is fit and Jones isn't would expect Dabo to make the bench at least on Saturday

Not sure whether to be pleased or not. On the one hand, you're messing with a winning formula which has taken us all season to find so you are, clearly, a muppet of the highest order who should be thrown to the FB group. On the other, it gets me off the hook and continues to hide my inherent doomy bad luck bringerness behind a mask of your son-being-a-mascot-related incompetence. Meh, that's about quits.

It surprised me with the gils second half tactics to come out and try and defend the 1-0 putting everyone behind the ball hit us on the break and waste time - I think at 1-1 they didn't know whether to carry on defending or to try and attack, and at that point we was getting into a pattern of play and dominating the ball which I think certainly helped towards the 2nd.

They were poor and looked lacking in ideas, if we can continue picking up points so we are building up momentum towards the Sheff Utd game we may be swapping places with them soon.

Hopefully Jones is fit for for Sat and can replace Branco as with him and Nathan both being right footed the balance is slightly off, and Branco does seem to make at least 1 mistake a game which could cost us

Yes I thought that as well. Maybe the moaners stayed at home and were busy playing the keyboard warrior role. Does make a difference to the players. Let the positivity continue. Bit late but here's my two pence worth. Ince was outstanding yesterday & is head & shoulders above any of our other midfield options. If we were to stay up then considerable efforts need to be made to turn his loan into a perm. Whether he would like to stay himself is another matter!! His passing is excellent, he rarely gives it away, and he was always looking to keep the ball moving, attacks seemed to start so much quicker from his initial pass. He covers a hell of a lot of ground & does a lot off the ball, his desire to win the ball back on the rare occasions he lost it was very noticeable.
The front two, as always, looked very potent together. Beaks missed a sitter in the first half, either side of the keeper would have been a certain goal & Ajose was unlucky with a hell of a strike from all of 30 yards that went just wide. The two of them complement each other extremely well & both need each other to be effective imo so keeping them fit between now & the end of the season is essential if we're to have any chance of staying up as we'll always create chances when they're both on the field together.
Gladwin also had a decent game in a wide role that, as has been mentioned previously, doesn't really suit his style. He put in some great deliveries, admittedly along with a couple of shockers & isn't afraid to have a pop although I don't think I've seen him hit the target at home since he came back.
Thompson was excellent, sweeping up on a couple of occasions when it looked as though the Gills were in & Branco had a decent game alongside him bar the first goal which leads me onto the major negatives which are a worry for me between now & the end of the season. The full backs are woeful, in particular Barry who had an absolute stinker. He tried to nick the ball in the build up to the first goal instead of standing his man up which resulted in him being turned easily, leaving a shitload of space in behind. His first touch & passing was terrible along with his frustrating inability to attack the opposing full back. Always looking sideways or backwards, the amount of times momentum was lost when he had the ball was shocking. Boo was slightly better but has no right foot, he beat his man on countless occasions but kept on going back outside to get it on his favoured (or only) left foot which meant that any runs the strikers had made in anticipation were rendered pointless as they had to check & start again. If you've worked the space put the fucking thing in the box, the onus is on Ajose & Beaks to gamble then. Dabo has to start on Sat if he's fit, his performances have dropped a little since the start but he's quick, athletic & better defensively than Barry. If there's any half decent full backs who are unattached at the moment then LP should be all over them. Caddis would have been ideal!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, there were a few in the TE chanting "We're fucking shit" during the first half. Fortunately, there were others (those of us who could see the effort was there and that we were clearly the better side despite being one-nil down) who countered it pretty swiftly.

It's a shame, as those who respond to a bit of crap play by chanting negatively, are also the ones who generate most of the noise at the start of games. I don't know if it is a generational thing, and I don't want to come across as 'it was better in my day' (even though it was :)), but even watching football live seems to have become a short attention span thing, where perspective and seeing the whole picture has been displaced by the constant need for immediate satisfaction. The world is either black or white, with no time or place for a bit of grey.

Get him signed and build a team around him.

Can't believe Rodger's hair hasn't taken the flack it so rightly deserves, yet. Shocking barnet.

It was noticeable that at the end of the game all the players stayed on the pitch, then had theior huddle again but rodgers had trundled back to get changed, not sure if it is due to the stick he gets from the crowd that he has no interest or not being a team player that he does not want to hang about, sad as you would hope they would all be fighting for the same cause

I was just reading they had a 'training session game' against the Daniel Strurridge academy for those that was not in the squad, bit of an odd 'team' to select for a training session, I wonder if this is anything to wanting first refusal of some of the young lads leaving the academy for next season

I thought that when I read it, let us give his young lads a run over see what hes got that we could be interested in.

I take it the Sturridge academy is similar to Hoddles old one, takes rejects from Premier League academy clubs and train them to a similar standard as they were used to?

I'd assume the Sturridge academy has more emphasis on "Spending half of each season in the treatment room", "Breaking down as a way of hiding so you can sit out your fat contract with little effort", and "Benches and how to warm them"

Having watched the goals, shouldn't Brophy be making an effort to get goal side when Branco slides on their goal? He seems to stand and watch.

Yes but he doesn't have a defensive bone in his body

If he had all of those things, he wouldn't be playing for us.

That was just in front of us, he allowed the guy to turn him with ease!
