Title: Swindon Town vs Oldham Athletic Official Matchday Thread
Post by: joteddyred on Saturday, February 18, 2017, 00:13:00
I've never started one of these ever, but figured I might as well give it a go. After all, it's not as if everyone's going to blame me if we lose .......

Oldham will go in front and the atmosphere will get nasty.  We may or may not manage to scramble an equaliser. Either way, Williams will trot out the usual crap in his post match interview and still be employed on Sunday morning.

Lowest league crowd of the season I would expect.  Full of optimism me 😊

Can't see beyond another defeat. Hopefully Ince will make a difference, but can't see it being enough.

0-1

might snatch a draw. it's the type of game everything indicates we will lose. like Bolton, Bradford, er, and all the other teams we've not lost to.

Oldham take a first half lead, team goes off to lots of boos and "Williams Out" chants, no subs at half time but in the 63rd minute Rodgers comes on and immediately lashes in a free kick to equalise.  Ajose gets a last minute winner from a Rodgers free kick!  Dream on!!!!!

Sorry to go all 'Reg' on you but we haven't beaten these at the CG since 2010!  Since then it's been: 0-2, 1-1, 0-1, 2-2, 1-2 and I can't see our current hapless, shot-shy bunch ending that run today.

I'll be there though!

The optimist in me wants to believe we can win this.

The realist in me noted that they've turned the corner, while we haven't.

The realist expects a 2-1 defeat, with a needless penalty given away and Williams claiming in his post match waffle session that they need to work on all the things we've all known about all season and which it's his job to have fixed.

Unfortunately this has all the hallmarks of a defeat - this season is turning out to be very similar to the one we went down under Paul Hart`s guidance - I remember sitting watching almost saying out load - what I am doing here - why do I come week after to week to see my team lose again and again - I fear the same today and just haven`t decided whether or not I can be bothered to drive from Bath to watch....and there`s still 15 or so games to go. 0-2  :frustr:

I'm donating a load of Town programmes to Swindon library today (haven't given up on Town, my dad gave them to me and I didn't want them or have the room) so I'm dragging my wife and kid to the game today. Showing a Bristol City fan what a slightly worse form of misery looks like...

Something foreboding about today - hence why I've decided to go I guess. Win, and you never quite know - maybe we start turning the corner?

Lose, which I fear is more likely, and we're as good as done - not because of the points, but because of the sheer lack of belief and quality.

In short today is massive, and we're terrible under pressure. If they can't get themselves up for a scrap today, they can give up and fuck off.

I guess it's quite lucky on the timing, both bring in a mess. how old is the little one now?

to add insult to injury was listening to talksport in the car earlier, nobody should have to listen to Timmy Mallet bigging up Oxford. They even spoke to his kid.

Just looked at the table, I have been avoiding it, if they beat us today then they will be 8 points ahead of us and at least 7 goals better off on goal difference. If Chesterfield can beat Gills who have not won in 8 games and we lose then we will be 2nd bottom.

If we win then Oldham will be only 2 points ahead of us but we will still be in the bottom 4 come 5pm.

It is a massive game today, I just hope the players grow some bollocks and put in a performance that gives us hope.

Also they have been strong at the CG lately as we have only beaten them 3 times in the last 13 games at home.

3 0 Town. It's time for the littluns to come good. Powers inside knowledge and luke warms persona will see us put in a late run for the play offs and all you moaning doubters' will eat your words.
The alternative is, playing the Swindon way, will see a gutless performance in a poor game and a 3 0 defeat.
A big "What are you doing?" To all you that pay good money to support Power psychotic scheme.

She's only one and a half. It's too early but we're moving house next week and I've got to get rid of those programmes (pretty much every one home and away for 20 odd years).

Her first ever game was Swindon Supermarine 0-6 Swindon Town so this would be her first game at the CG... I'll take a 1-0 win and let her unbeaten streak continue.

Going to the CGH shortly. I need a few beers now prior to a game to get any sense of enjoyment out of it.

Something occurred to me (while sat on the toilet), not once in my 30ish years of supporting Swindon have I ever had a shit at the County Ground.

Write your own joke about what you see on the pitch...

I had one in the Intel stand toilet when it was still the Intel stand. I think it was vs Tranmere or Bolton.

Yes. In the Winners lounge (ironic name).

It's a Latin word, and U was always written as a V in Roman inscriptions. It was part of Mussolini's propaganda attempt to link his Fascist "empire" that never was back to the Roman Empire by styling himself as "Dux" (Leader, not Duke as the ignoramus who wrote the Sun caption has it).

The way we capitulated and bent over for oxford was the final straw for me im afraid. Voting with my feet, change is needed.

Fair play to those sticking with it- I havent enjoyed a game in a long long while. Can take getting beat every week, cannot take lack of effort and desire.  :badmood:

Five pages and still 30 mins until kick off!  No one at the game, then?!

Feels like one of the last opportunities we'll get to jump start the season in to life before it's simply too late.  Not all over yet...but 'must win game' no longer really a cliché.  Come on, Swindon!!

All Oldham have to do is go Route 1.  A home defeat has to provide for major changes.  It seems that Sherwood is being protected from carrying the can for relegation.

There were jubilant scenes at the final whistle as Lincoln's 3,210 travelling support celebrated as the visitors reached the sixth round for the first time in their history.

It is the furthest that a non-league team have gone in the FA Cup since 1911-12 where Swindon Town reached the semi-finals.

Another loss for us.

That record has gone! :)

Good first 30 minutes from us with about 4 decent chances. Unfortunately we haven't taken any of them and look like we have the ability to hit self destruct at any point. We need a goal.

Haven't seen much of us this year, probably 8-9 games, but without doubt the best 45 I've seen in the league. Created 10-11 decent opportunities, 2-3 huge chances but simply haven't taken them.

Ince is good. Gladwin looks dangeous every time he gets the ball thanks to Oldham giving us the freedom of Wiltshire. Obika  dropping off nicely. Still 0-0 though.... and still not solid at CB at all, in fact they've missed the best chance of the half right on the whistle.

Agree with PP

Probably the best 45 mins this season, the problem is we haven't scored.

Will we be able to keep it up in the second half, or will we revert to type.

What a disappointment . . . again!!  First half we were easily the better side and should have been 3-0 up.  Williams obviously delivered a dirge at half time that sent our players to sleep,  could easily have been beaten by a shit side who, in the second half, demonstrated that they wanted it more than us!!

Title: Re: Swindon Town vs Oldham Athletic Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Batch on Saturday, February 18, 2017, 17:44:06
Probably one of our better performances.
First half was pretty good. Ince was a beast. Moved the ball quickly and tried to utilise our pace with Brophy the best outlet.
Created a fair few chances, but Oldham missed a sitter just before half time.

Second half we started a bit slower, degenerated, got worse with the subs but still missed a couple of good chances.

But none of that matters, 0-0 at home against Oldham isn't what we need given the context. A missed oppertunity.

Thought Thompson and Boo were poor today. Everyone else did OK with a mix of good and poor.

Momentum, or lack of, is intangible but you know it when you see it even when you're 12. The only wonder is how or why Power et al can't see it. Perhaps he does and doesn't care but reality is we're on our way down.

Steve White also compared him to Kamara on the radio.

If we could somehow manage to stay up and sign him we'd be taking a big step towards a better campaign next season.

If we go down we need to be looking at someone with his qualities as a priority. A player like Ince is so important to enable your flair players the freedom to influence the game further up the pitch.

A really decent first half performance. The only downside, obviously, was not getting the ball in the net.

Second half showed again why Williams is not up to it. Oldham's tactics changed - a simple case of pushing up 5-10 yards. Williams couldn't counter it, just like the Pox game, allowing Oldham to take the initiative.

Still, glad the players were given a good round of applause at the end. It was an acceptable effort.

I could understand Williams' decision to take Ince off, he genuinely thought he could easily have got a second yellow. However, it was the wrong decision. In the position we're in you just have to play your best players.

"Power sack the cunt" - shameful. Williams isn't a cunt, despite his best efforts he's just not a good enough manager.

As Leftside stated Williams just didn't react to the change in Oldham's tactics.  First half they were happy for us to have the ball whilst they massed their 10 man defence, second half they pushed up on us much more and stopped us playing.  Sadly our lack of fitness told in the end and once Brophy had been substituted (not really fit) we had no real outlet.  Just need a bit more pace in midfield but that chance has passed us by.  It was a good effort from the team, nobody can have gone home and said we didn't try - just missing a bit of quality.

Lots of comparisons have been made with previous relegation seasons.

Just had a look at the great escape season of 2000-01 where we finished with 52 points.

At this stage we are 6 points worse off having scored 5 fewer but conceded 3 less.

The 2001 side were in the middle of a run of one defeat in 12 which probably kept them up, as they only managed 8 points from the final 9 games.

So, we need to start putting a run together, but as with 2001 there is likely to be a reliance on someone else fucking it up as well.

For us to stay up now will require something extraordinary.  So in theory it is possible, but that Kingy side got the need to play Div 3 relegation style football and it was just enough. Certainly not pretty though.

The current set up have thumbed their noses at the traditional route taken by Oldham, Bury, Shrews etc.it's either brave or stupid, and we'll soon find out. To survive from here though would be a major achievement.

I was thinking this.

We are down this season - I can't see how anyone who's watched us can think there's even a slight chance of us winning six more games.

The priority has to now be Lee Power leaving the football club. If he stays, the management team stays, the"model" stays, the powder puff football stays.. etc etc that we have seen does not work at this level.

Where I disagree with power is that you need a couple of players to do the dirty work. Where the players are younger and mouldable it is a fantastic opportunity for a tactically astute coach to change things quickly.
It is the lack of pragmatism that kills it for me. It is the amount of loan players pushing back our youngsters, maybe 3 max, 2 possible signings and 1 lucky to have. It is the model at all costs. We have football men in charge of us, they know what they need to do but spectacularly fail to do so - repeatedly. It's not just this window that has been a fuck up, it's the last 4 or 5.
Every communication from the club be it power, coaches, or players is just puerile shite or lies to keep us turning up and handing over the cash.
This season we are down but thats possibly nothing compared to what's to come. If our little darlings can't cope with div3, they are fucked in div4 where the hairy arsed players are even hairier.
It may sound melodramatic but this club is fucked with power at the helm unless he starts displaying the pragmatism he has failed to do so far.

Gave up attending cg after v scum  no leadership on /off pitch , feel sorry for Thompson only one who plays with passion for club .
LW  clueless & totally out of depth but  power doesn't  give a fuck  .

Maybe he thinks L2 will offer up more opportunities for players to shine and, thereby sell, and is blissfully unaware that the majority of fans see it as another step towards non league obscurity.

As you say, for so-called football people, their ideas on how to recruit and prepare a successful team are nothing short of a disgrace.

Power sees himself as a Lewisham Pozzo, in his mind the level doesn't matter much, as he's now got 2 clubs to play with. He'd like to use STFC, to get Waterford up and into Europe as there's money to be made...

Not sure how the pre season tour to Waterford would work as their season time is strange, but it's bound to happen.....unless Town fans make it clear that there would be anti Power protests in Waterford, which he might not like.

The alternative might be to think oh well it could be a craic, after all Kingy also managed Waterford, so  :pint:

I was thinking this.

We are down this season - I can't see how anyone who's watched us can think there's even a slight chance of us winning six more games.

The priority has to now be Lee Power leaving the football club. If he stays, the management team stays, the"model" stays, the powder puff football stays.. etc etc that we have seen does not work at this level.

I totally agree with this post.

Unless the style of play and recruitment policy is adjusted we will really struggle in league 2 as it's so much more physical down there.

I really think if Power stays we will end up in the coference

So, your bottom line re Power is, he doesn't give a flying one about the health of STFC. It's all about the money, money, money.

Power is only interested in money.

I haven't got any issue with him getting his investment back, but his policy on style of play and recruitment will see us relegated to the conference if we aren't careful

He said he's here to make money, I take that at face value.

That's the problem. There isn't one so unless something happens a very slow and painful death for stfc courtesy of Mr power.

What are the alternatives?

He puts all his money into Town & bankrupts himself in the process

It's not the fact that he wants to make money that's the problem, it's the way he tries to do it.

What are the alternatives?
He could actually try to construct a successful side and make his money off that instead of what seems like a total disregard for the club and hoping to make money out of individual players.

Most of us can accept a crap season where it seems as if those in charge have done their best, but not when recruitment policy failures are constantly repeated in the search of a profit.

Last season was partially accepted due to the unending injuries - this season is just perverse.

I don't agree with or like the way Power is taking the club but I can't shake the feeling that after what happened last time, it's better the devil you know.

He can take a profit for all I care. just funny take the piss, be up front and change the approach a bit

I'm not exactly excited about the prospect of Division 4 football, going to conference football would see me become a part time supporter #fairWeather

That's why my attitude to him is one of despair really. I'd rather go bust in a PDC fit of spending than spend eternity in the non leagues. both = death (to me).

Massive load of hypotheticals in there mind..

Until there's a viable alternative. I'm sure the Trust were instrumental in getting Bill Power interested in the club when Mick the Greek was around, be interesting to find out if they are actively looking at alternatives to the current Power...

I'm not keen on the current regime's methods, but you don't have to think too far back in our history to see what could happen if he just fucks off and we're left either up shit creek without a paddle, or that paddle's being worked by a Jedalike...

if we are break-even with no debt we aren't necessarily up a creek without a paddle.

can't think he won't have callable debt in his leaving mind..

Yep, which is why I said 'could' happen, not would. There's only a couple of options that are positive: Power finally accepts that his model needs adapting and he distances himself from the playing side, or someone with vision and financial backing appears on the scene. Unfortunately I'm doubtful that either will happen any time soon...

I would assume debt free means to anyone else but hime (and Black in the event of us having to pay him back).

Doesn't mean we don't owe Power money, he's already mentioned covering the shortfall this season as crowds are less than they had budgeted for.

The thing is the model doesn't actually need changing that much, we just need a couple more players with experience, evidenced by the impact Ince has had.

The problem has become the balance is too far the other way

This. I despair of Power's current MO, but for everyone saying "Things couldn't be any worse", oh yes they bloody could. Be very careful what you wish for

That's a fair enough view, but  'keeping hold of nurse for fear of finding something worse' shouldn't be a reason for accepting Power's model. If people genuinely think he'll take us into non league, could anyone else really do much worse.

This is so true, every club has ups and downs well most certainly at our level, think recently we've been spoilt tbh, the guy did save our club and he's learning the way too think we just need to be patient, where do people expect us to be if run by the trust?

He's not learning or if he is it's to his own benefit not stfc and he has had previous experience at Cambridge and rushden. He can do what the fuck he wants with the club and there is fuck all we can do about it. He could modify his model, he's shown no signs of doing so. Basically unless he adapts, we luck out or we have someone decent in the wings willing to buy him out it's the death of a thousand cuts rather than the Jed / agombar instant death.

Does anyone recall the name of the charity outside the ground for this game? I think it was for the Armed Forces as I remember having a brief conversation with one of their guys who was fundraising. I didn't commit to anything at the time but did promise to look at their website. Any ideas? Cheers.
