Title: recommend me a car dealer
Post by: jayohaitchenn on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, 08:15:53
Looking to buy an MPV/SUV for the wife. Budget is a laughable £1000ish + part ex on our shitty Ford Focus (£200 tops).

Anyone got anything or can recommend a dealer?

Cheers

For that budget, you would get more privately.

I'd buy privately with that sort of budget.

I bought the wife a Zafira for £650 that was listed on Gumtree.

I don't normally like buying private but for that budget its probably your best option.

Plenty of options looking at auto trader, as long as you're willing to take an older vehicle with higher miles.

Buy local if from a dealer and make sure they're established because you won't want to drive a car with problems to far out of Swindon.
Especially avoid this place at all costs http://www.highburymotors.co.uk/
The bloke who owns it is an absolute cunt and knows very little about cars. His salesman lackey is just as bad.

Privately its pretty much buy as seen, even if it breaks down half way home the previous owner is at no liberty to give you your money back.
With a dealer, you should get some sort of guarantee. OK, as Si will tell you, somethings the guarantees are as useful as a chocolate teapot and the dealer will fob you off but with some pushing which i'm sure you are capable of you should get a dealer to agree to fix any issues that may arise.

I'm with you on that. Personally if you want a better chance of not buying a turkey go Japanese/German. Avoid the French at all costs.

Pro is that it is cheaper to buy privately, but it's more a risk.

If you have a model in mind, try and find an enthusiast forum. They should have a for sale section, and most will look after their vehicles.

You can get it checked before hand by the AA I believe, and always get a hpi check.

check the mot history on the gov site too.

I got the vehicle repaired elsewhere and lodged a small claim through the court. Went to mediation and got 75% of my outlay back, so wasn't too bad apart from the massive hassle of it all.

I'd definitely consider getting an AA check next time but would eat significantly into your budget https://www.theaa.com/vehicle-inspections/prices.html
Things to look out for vary on car to car. Best off searching "car make model common problems" and "car make model buyers guide".

Any recommends for models? We've been looking at Zafiras, Focus C-Max and the like.

Would avoid Zafira. Does it have to have 7 seats?

that was my next question, are you looking for something with 7 seats or just looking for size?

I think the mrs is keen on 7 seats but it's not a deal breaker

We've had 4 Zafiras, all autos, 3 inc the current one doing over 350k miles combined with no major mechanical issues. Great for a growing family, taking furniture to flats/getting Christmas trees/carrying bikes/6 pissed adults back from the pub, taking 6 kids to play cricket, you name it. Kids learned to drive in them. They've all ended up scratched to fuck and covered in mud (live in the country) and no-one thinks of stealing them, not exactly full of street cred are they.

Bit 'sit up and beg' to drive, bit soft around corners but who's a boy racer in one of these anyway. You could look for an imported Opal (same car), they seem to have zero value. Easy to maintain them too. Missus loves them.

Will be looking at Zafira As (MK1) for his budget, pretty much an Astra G underneath. Would recommend a petrol if it's going to be driven round town primarily.

I've still got a Haynes manual for the Astra G/Zafira A if you do get one and want it Jayo.

Agree about the petrol one for town driving. I've always thought zafiras fitted that niche well (compact outside but space/seats inside)

Yeah looking primarily petrol to keep running costs down. I've already got a big diesel van and the tax is horrific

Renault scenic is good too, just make sure you check the electrics plus the auto handbrake.

1.6? Check for lumpy running and wandering revs when idle, the coil packs have a tendency to act up, they're not that expensive to sort out but they're a pain in the arse.

Bought it. Bit above budget but it seems alright. It's nicer than the shed she was driving and she's happy. Plus 3 months warranty.

unfortunately not, the folk that own the land are gonna level it and build a whole new showroom/workshop/etc for the Jag dealership, most of the staff have moved to the Jag dealers as well. Seat are now in with Fish Brothers I think.

Er guys, have I been a dick over this?

Need a car for my mum, very limited budget £1000. Thought I may as well go private.

Found a Polo for £700, with MOT. Rang guy and paid £100 deposit to secure it. He's selling on behalf of daughter's boyfriend who has gone travelling with his daughter.
Then get text to meet at restaurant he's renovating to collect as space at his house parking is limited. I get worried at this point, getting car...at public place...
Tells me I can go into the restaurant if it is a problem.
Finally says I can go to his house to get him to go to restaurant to get car. But at this point I pull out.

He's probably genuine. But it didn't sit right. Says he'll refund me tomorrow (so probably was genuine all along).

I've been a cautious dick, haven't I

Not necessarily.

I went for a test drive in a Renault 5 (yes) many years ago. It was parked in an alleyway in Wroughton with a for sale sign and phone number. Guy turned up after 5 minutes, "documents are on their way from dvla, I took in part exchange blah blah". Needless to say he did not get a sale.

I’m looking for a smallish van if anyone can help. Ideally with a roof rack and pipe tube. I reserve the right to get a garage inspection at my cost of course. Being picky i’d Prefer not white.
