Title: Development Game Today
Post by: Private Fraser on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, 10:22:25
There's a Central League game against Rovers at Supermarine today (1 o'clock kick off).  Adver doing Twitter coverage.

I popped along to the last Development game against Cheltenham at Supermarine, also a 1pm kick off, and it was free to enter the ground. No problems at all. Enjoy!

On paper this looked a strong side, just heard somebody on the radio (not sure who it was) that said Jake Evans stood out, doesn't say a lot for the seasoned pros does it!!

Several of these will need to get used to playing at venues like Hunt's Copse as it's about their level.

Development Squad/Central League match away at Cheltenham at 1 o'clock today.  Can they get their first win of the season?  How many of our misfiring forwards will be given some much needed shooting practice?

We had 'A Trialist' previously remember. Striker scored 2 goals but never got signed.

Admittedly it could have been down to a number of reasons but as Reg has said, none of our players this season has scored more than 1 goal in a match so could have been worth a punt.

Yes, I know, Dossevi!

I saw that Tom Hitchcock joined Boreham Wood last week (that was the trialist in question, I think)

Trialists are mostly good for little conversation, not the next messiah.

The other target for our lot is the record low for a leading scorer of 8 goals scored in a FL season. Power/Williams already have one of these in the locker, but in mitigation 3 players on 8 goals isn't such a problem....namely Ranger, Michael Smith and N'Guessan in 13/14.

It's sad how quickly standards have dropped that an N'Guessan would be an upgrade on this season.

Ignoring the weekend's car crash, today could be worth a look for those at a loose-end. Team *should* look a little bit like this:

4-4-2 (Diamond)

GK Will Henry

RB Jake Evans
LB Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill
CB Christian Frimpong (U18s)
CB Dion Conroy

DM Rohan Ince
CM Tom Smith/Anton Rodgers
CM Jesse Starkey
AM Jordan Stewart/Ellis Iandolo

FOR Islam Feruz
FOR Jordan Young/Jordan Stewart

Highlights just how many central midfielders are at STFC - when you're looking at playing one at right-back, and you still might not have room for a Tom Smith or Ellis Iandolo! Squad is ridiculously lop-sided to the point that it's quite damaging to likes of Smith, Iandolo and Evans.

We do tend to put other club's academy players ahead of our and it irks me. Is Feruz any better than Jordan Young - nope. Is Colklett more effective in a feisty derby than Tom Smith - nope! Frustrating.

For a team lacking in confidence theres fuck all to lose IMO.

Yes they are both lightweight but both have pace and its not like we knock the ball long that often for a big striker to knock the ball down to the smaller strikers to feed off.

I would genuinely go for

               Vigs
Thompson Jones Branco Dabo
               Ince
   Colkett Gladwin Smith
         Ajose  Hylton

Based on his lacklustre performances in the last two games, I would give Gladwin a rest.  The five loanees I would include would be Ajose, Dabo, Jones, Ince and Colkett.  So it would be:

Vigs (if available); Dabo, Branco, Jones, Brophy; Ince, Colkett, Smith; Norris (or Obika, if fit), Ajose, Hylton.

Subs: Henry; Thompson, Kasim, Conroy, Starkey, Norris (if Obika is fit), Stewart.

I see Hylton retweeted someone saying if he doesn't start the next game then there is something wrong.

Well, Jermaine, you had your couple of starts at Millwall and Franchise and were comfortably the worst player on the pitch. Factor in his approx 40 consecutive matches without a goal for the club and I am frankly astounded he remains League 1 footballer.

Fuck me, I despair at some of our side, I really do. I can see a Douglas/Prutton Suju style punch up before the season is out.

To be fair in his recent substitute appearances he has looked good. Strong, pacy and playing with some desire.

I don't think he can do much more than score 4 in the reserves in front of tactics Tim and put himself in the 'first team shop window'.

I'm probably wrong, but I reckon he'll be a handy lower league player given a bit of a run.

Also I'm sure I saw him score against Peterborough a year or so back so what are you going on about him not scoring Chang?

That depends.

If the question was "which current first team striking hotshot scuffed his one and only goal for the mighty Robins in April 2015?" then I think you'd change that view in a heartbeat.

He hasn't scored for the club in approx 40 matches since the goal on his debut (not a year or so ago, very nearly two years exactly).

As is usual with footballers, they suddenly become much better when they aren't playing. Classic STFC example in recent times - Miles Storey....some of our fans are beginning to spout similar bollocks re Hylton.

How many games has he started in that time and how much game time has he had? It's difficult to make an impact when you come on for the last 10 minutes of a game......

I've given this a bit of thought, as it's the biggest game we've had probably since Preston. Lose and it really is as good as all over, we drop below the line.

Bury score goals for fun at Gigg Lane but ship plenty also.....the only comparable home conceders being Franchise and we did manage 2 there....unfortunately we still shipped 3 to the then Divs most shot shy home outfit.  We also know that Bury will try to kick us off the park, as they did successfully at the CG, ending the season of JSW.  The conclusion has to be we need to field as robust an XI as we have......attack them from the off, to try and get an early lead of a couple of goals, and then ramp up the gamemanship in an effort to get someone sent off.....I believe we are the 2 worst disciplined sides in Div 3.

They'll be doing the same mind, so no doubt Luke will think pick our most flickfanny XI and try and give them a footballing lesson in a 0-4 defeat.

Here's my pick...

                                                       Vigs
                                  Thompson, Branco, Jones, Dabo
                                    Kasim, T Smith, Ince, Gladwin

I agree the only one I personally would change would be Hylton for Norris and that purely because he must be full of confidence after yesterday and I would relegate Norris to the bench.

I can't see it happening though and I also think LW will play Rodgers ahead of Smith in the middle unfortunately.

Chuck only gets in because he has some physical presence, is usually available for selection and can hold up the ball on occasions.

Thought he did well first half on Sunday but, like all the others, went MIA in the second half.  Maybe the answer is to start with him on Saturday and then bring on Ironman Obika for the second half (if they can unwrap him from all the cotton wool in time).  :)

NSSJO would be the preferred option, but it looks increasingly like we've seen the last of him. Yesterday's game would have been ideal to give him an hour, if near fit.

I have to say I think Jermaine must be worth a start, just to echo what's been already said it's hard to have much of an impact with 10 minutes at the end of a game when the team are already beaten and heads are down.

Has looked much more dangerous recently, also what's the worst that could happen? He doesn't score?

It's pretty much a given that our strikers won't score on the road....3 so far this season.  So a physical presence defending on corners and trying to press from the front is realistically more important.  Luke should be more innovative, rather than give Hylton 15 minutes at the end, why not give him say 20/25 mins at the beginning....get him to run around, if we don't score then take him off.

There's no i in team.  If the thinking and so importance to the team is clearly explained, then it should be quite the reverse. The key meaning of the role should be outlined.  Part of Luke's problems is that players don't particularly look like they know what they're doing beyond an effort at a glorified El Rondo drill.

I'd be inclined to give Conroy ago as I believe he'll be a regular next year, so get him in. Branco is still highly suspect and I really hope he's gone in the summer. I also like Smith and would like to hope he's here next year.
Would also revert to 4-5-1 and flood the midfield. Would drop Gladwin, still looks like a Passenger, and in his case one who hasn't paid his fare.

Vigs
Dabo Conroy Jones Thompson
Brophy Ince Colkett Smith Kasim
Ajose

The problem with flooding the midfield is, that gives us more players to run around and be ineffective. Our midfield has been weak recently and hence the defence gets hammered.

With two agile and pacey forwards (Ajose and Hylton) I would be kicking the arse of the GK coach and insisting he teaches rapid distribution. we fanny around too much when Vigs gets the ball.

Ajose/ Hylton remain in high up the pitch. Vigs takes the ball from a corner/ cross whatever, BOOM, Schmeical like throw to Ajose/ Hylton who attack like the terrier they are. We at least put the oppo under pressure and who knows, last ditch last man tackles and they're down to 10 men.

We also need to be more creative from throw ins. Every time we let it go out at the moment, it is almost a given that it'll end up with the opposition in seconds.

Title: Re: Development Game Today
Post by: Captain Beefheart on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, 13:56:46
You're definitely right about Vigs distribution. I lost count of the number of times we passed up and opportunity to get the ball forward and put Oxford under pressure quickly on Sunday. We take 5-6 seconds every time the ball goes back to the keeper, only for Vigs to end up punting it away aimlessly after we put ourselves under pressure. I had hoped that with Ajose back the in the side we would be a little more direct.

My only worry is that in starting Ajose and Hylton together we'd lose any sort of physicality up-top and our already weak midfield will be shown to be even weaker. We'll have no outlet.

Although, having said that, Norris is probably better suited to a role in Outlet Village than he is up front.

I don't rate Norris but he had a decent first 45 Sunday. The problem he has is that is neither nor. He's not a goalscorer and he's not a leader of the line bringing others into play nor is he an out and out battering ram. If I was a defender I'd love to mark Norris. I could easily accept playing out wide and keep him away from danger even if he could be dangerous.

The good young big uns who are good athletes get picked up by the big clubs these days and we get left with the small tricky young uns who aren't able to cope physically. They usually end up at Supermarine or Chippenham.

Kingy did find a good big young un when he signed Matt Heywood in 2001 and he made a big contribution to us staying up that year.

No doubt there will be more 'Williams waffle' about it tomorrow.  Who can tell?  Looking back to last Friday he was saying that Obika was possibly close to getting some game time against Oxford:

but, yesterday, Embleton was reported as saying he is still some way off even training with the 'matchday' squad:

That team against Rovers today will be the core of the first team next season in L2. Without doubt Power will cut his costs further on the playing side and he doesn't care what league we will be in so long as he can make a few bob from a couple of players.

He's probably desperate for this season to finish so he can get a nice fee for LV. No way will he invest in the squad to get us back into L1 I'm afraid with this Prick as owner of our club he doesn't give a shit its all about him and what he gets from the club by selling his assets.

Very worrying times ahead I feel for our club all the time this prick owns it.

It was actually a pretty ropey finish.

But to be fair he tied the defender in knots?

Unsurprisingly, Town lost.

Five of those players are out-of-contract in the summer, six had Rodgers played.

I don't think it's insane to think that Ormonde-Ottewill, Rodgers, Kasim, Iandolo, Stewart and Hylton will all leave in the summer.

I dare say Rodgers and, maybe, Iandolo will survive the scrap heap.

Shock, Horror.  Town concede a last minute goal to lose.

So not even fit enough to last 90 mins in a development game ;)
